1998 Toyota Lx470 problems
The Lexus LX (Japanese: レクサス・LX, Hepburn: Rekusasu LX) is a full-size luxury SUV sold by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota since January 1996, having entered manufacturing in November 1995. It is Lexus' largest and most expensive luxury SUV. Four generations have been produced, all based heavily on the long-running Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs. The first-generation LX 450 started production in 1995 as Lexus' first entry into the SUV market. Its successor, the LX 470, premiered in 1998 and was manufactured until 2007. The third-generation LX debuted at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007. The fourth-generation LX debuted in October 2021.
The first-generation LX 450 had a straight-six engine and seats for seven passengers. The second and third-generations had a V8 engine powertrain, a welded steel body-shell combined with full-size steel ladder frame (body-on-frame construction), and seats for eight passengers. The fourth-generation model has a twin-turbocharged V6 engine powertrain and seats for seven passengers as standard and four passengers as an option. The second-generation LX 470 shared exterior styling with the Japanese domestic market Land Cruiser Cygnus.
According to Lexus, the "LX" name stands for "Luxury Crossover". However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, "Luxury Four Wheel Drive".

Common 1998 Toyota Lx470 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Toyota LX470 1998, common problems with this car include:
- Throttle Position Sensor (Recall): In the 1998-1999 models, there were issues with the throttle position sensor, leading to a recall. This component is crucial for the engine's performance and can cause drivability issues if malfunctioning.
- Front Differential Weakness: The 1998-1999 models had a weak 2-pinion front differential that could blow if subjected to specific conditions like backing up uphill or winching. This problem could lead to significant mechanical issues and affect the vehicle's drivability.
- Rattling Catalytic Converter Shield: Owners reported rattling noises from the catalytic converter shield in the early models. While this may not affect the car's performance, it can be an annoying sound and indicate potential issues with the exhaust system.
- Transmission Failures: Some 2000 models experienced transmission failures, highlighting potential issues with the transmission system's reliability and durability.
- Exhaust Manifold Cracks: Over time, the exhaust manifolds in all model years of the LX470 can develop cracks, which can lead to exhaust leaks and impact engine performance.
- AHC Accumulator Failure: The AHC (Automatic Height Control) accumulators in the suspension system can fail, especially if the previous owner used the wrong fluid. This can result in suspension issues and affect the vehicle's ride quality.
- Wheel Height Sensor Rust: The AHC wheel height sensors are prone to rust and failure, particularly in wet or salty areas. This can lead to inaccurate height adjustments and impact the vehicle's stability and handling.
- Nakamichi Stereo Headunit Problems: Some owners reported issues with the Nakamichi stereo headunit, which could malfunction or fail over time. This can affect the car's entertainment system and require replacement or repair.
These common problems highlight various mechanical and electrical issues that owners of the Toyota LX470 1998 may encounter. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and using quality parts can help mitigate these issues and ensure the vehicle's longevity and performance.

SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-12-15
- VIN: JT6HT00W3W0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
- Summary: SUDDEN TOTAL FAILURE OF VEHICLES (TOYOTA LX 470) PRIMARY BRAKING SYSTEM. VEHICLE TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP EL CAJON TOYOTA) FOR DIAGNOSES. NOTIFIED BY SERVICE TECHNICIAN (CARLOS) THAT THE BRAKES HAD FAILED DUE TO A LOW BATTERY (8.2 VOLTS). RECOMMENDED THAT THE BATTERY BE REPLACED. I DIDN'T BELIEVE THAT A BATTERY, THAT HAD NEVER FAILED TO START THE VEHICLE, COULD CAUSE A TOTAL FAILURE OF THE PRIMARY BRAKING SYSTEM. HE EXPLAINED THAT THIS IS WHAT CAME UP WHEN THEY RAN THE CARS ERROR CODES. LATER, CARLOS CALLED MY WIFE AND TOLD HER THEY HAD REPLACED THE BATTERY AND THE BRAKES WERE WORKING FINE. I WOULDN'T ACCEPT THE CAR UNTIL I COULD SPEAK WITH SOMEONE, BESIDES CARLOS, ABOUT THIS. I WAS GIVEN JEFF THE SHOP FORMAN AND HE VERIFIED THAT THE WORK ORDER DID INDICATE THE BRAKE FAILURE HAD BEEN CAUSED BY A LOW BATTERY CONDITION. I ASKED HIM HOW A BATTERY STRONG ENOUGH TO START THE CAR COULD ALSO CAUSE THE BRAKES TO FAIL. HE EXPLAINED THAT THESE CARS HAD AN ELECTRONIC BRAKE ACCUMULATOR. I POINTED OUT THAT ONCE THE CAR WAS RUNNING IT RAN OFF OF THE ALTERNATOR AND NOT THE BATTERY. HE AGREED TO KEEP THE CAR AND DO MORE TESTING. HE CALLED THE NEXT DAY AND ADVISED THEY HAD BEEN ABLE TO GET THE BRAKES TO FAIL, WITH THE NEW BATTERY, AND THEY NOW NEEDED TO CHANGE THE ACCUMULATOR FOR $3,500.00. I ASKED THAT THEY GET MY CAR READY TO BE TOWED TO ANOTHER REPAIR SHOP. THE DEALER HAS REFUSED TO WITHDRAW THE CLAIM THAT A WEAK BATTERY CAN RESULT IN TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE. I NEED TO KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE OR NOT. I DON'T WANT TO OWN, OPERATE OR HAVE MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN A CAR THAT CAN LOOSE BRAKES BECAUSE OF A WEAK BATTERY. PLEASE HELP ME MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION AS TO THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE. *TR
