Chrysler Lebaron 1990 problems
The Chrysler LeBaron, also known as the Imperial LeBaron, is a line of automobiles built by Chrysler from 1931 to 1941 and from 1955 to 1995. The model was introduced in 1931, with a body manufactured by LeBaron, and competed with other luxury cars of the era such as Lincoln and Packard. After purchasing LeBaron with its parent Briggs Manufacturing Company, Chrysler introduced the luxury make Imperial in 1955, and sold automobiles under the name Imperial LeBaron until 1975. Chrysler discontinued the Imperial brand in 1975, and reintroduced the Chrysler LeBaron in 1977 to what was then Chrysler's lowest priced model.
The "LeBaron" name has since been applied to five different cars built by the Chrysler Division:
- 1977–1981 M-body (mid-size) LeBaron sedan, coupe, and wagon
- 1982–1988 K-body (mid-size) LeBaron sedan, coupe, convertible, and wagon
- 1985–1989 H-body (mid-size) LeBaron GTS hatchback
- 1987–1995 J-body (personal luxury) LeBaron coupe and convertible
- 1990–1994 AA-body (mid-size) LeBaron sedan
The last Chrysler LeBaron was produced in 1995, to be replaced with the Cirrus and Sebring. The LeBaron was one of Chrysler's longest running brands.

Common Chrysler Lebaron 1990 problems
The Chrysler LeBaron, produced in the early 1990s, was known for its sleek design and smooth ride. However, some drivers reported issues with the car's power windows and locks, particularly in the convertible models. The power windows and locks would sometimes fail to operate properly, causing inconvenience and frustration for drivers.
In addition to the issues with the power windows and locks, the 1989 and 1990 LeBaron models were known for problems with the car's transmission and fuel system. Drivers reported that the transmission would shift roughly or fail to engage properly, causing the car to jerk or stall while driving. The fuel system and carburetor were also problematic, causing the car to stall or struggle to accelerate.
The 1991 LeBaron had its own set of issues, with drivers reporting problems with the car's brakes and electrical system. The brakes would become spongy or fail to engage properly, while the electrical system had issues with the battery and alternator. These problems could cause the car to be difficult to start or drive, and could potentially lead to more serious safety issues.
By 1993, some drivers were reporting more serious issues with the LeBaron, including rust and corrosion on the body and undercarriage. This could compromise the car's structural integrity and lead to more costly repairs over time. Additionally, some drivers continued to experience problems with the transmission, which would shift roughly or fail to engage properly.
The Chrysler LeBaron was also known for issues with the fuel system and carburetor, as well as problems with the electrical system. Some drivers experienced issues with the starter motor and alternator, while others reported problems with the car's brakes, which would become spongy or fail to engage properly. These issues could cause the car to be difficult to start or drive, and could potentially lead to more serious safety issues.
Overall, the Chrysler LeBaron had a range of issues that were reported by drivers, particularly in the early 1990s models. These issues included problems with the transmission, fuel system, electrical system, brakes, and power windows and locks. While the car was known for its sleek design and smooth ride, these issues could cause inconvenience and frustration for drivers, and could potentially lead to more serious safety issues over time.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-11-24
- VIN: 1C3XJ4538LG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: A REAR BRAKE LINING SEPARATED FROM THE SHOE. I FOUND THE PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME WHILE GREASING THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS. THE LOOSE SHOE WAS STILL IN PLACE CAPTURED BY THE CALIPER. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO MY DEALER. I WAS TOLD THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL: CAMPAIGN NUMBER 92V017000, BUT MY 1990 VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL SINCE IT EFFECTED 1989 MODELS. HOWEVER, I CONVINCED THE DEALER I DID HAVE THE PROBLEM SINCE I HAD A LINING THAT SEPARATED FROM THE SHOE. THE DEALER REPLACED MY REAR BRAKES AT THAT TIME. I HAVE NO RECORD OF THE SERVICE DATE, AND THE DEALER CLAIMS HE HAS NO RECORD, ALTHOUGH HE ALSO HAS NO RECORD OF THE RECALL SERVICE THAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT A PROBLEM WITH WATER COLLECTING IN A REAR WHEEL WELL EITHER. TWO DAYS AGO, I WAS AGAIN GREASING THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS ON THIS VEHICLE AND I DISCOVERED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM! ONE OF THE BRAKE LININGS WAS SEPARATED FROM THE SHOE AGAIN! I AM VERY CONCERNED FOR TWO REASONS. FIRST, THE ORIGINAL RECALL DID NOT CORRECT ALL THE DEFECTIVE BRAKES. MY 1990 CHRYSLER LEBARON OBVIOUSLY HAD THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH CHRYSLER INSISTED IT EFFECTED ONLY 1989 MODELS AND MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED. SECOND, PARTS USED AFTER THE RECALL WAS ANNOUNCED, STILL EXHIBIT THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE!

Your parents bought this car almost 14 years ago, and it still runs like the day they drove it home. The engine starts right up, and the V-6 still moves it along much better than the 2003 Mustang I recently rented. Although cosmetically the car could have been built a little better, all in all, it's a great car. I'm very pleased.

I've got a 1990 Lebaron that currently has 230,000+ miles on it! This is a car that won't quit! It's comfortable, has pretty good gas mileage for its age, and it still looks good! It was passed down from my aunt, who'd received it from my grandparents, who bought it used. And for a 16-year-old car, it's pretty good. I love LeBarons!

I bought this car from my mother for a dollar when she became legally blind in 2010. It's now 2021 and it still runs and drives! She even gave me the dollar back to get her McDonald's hamburger. :)

Hi there! I just wanted to share a little bit about my '90 convertible. It's been my trusty daily driver since 1989, but unfortunately, this month in 2023, the blown headgasket finally caused a misfire. (Almost everything is 100% original in the engine bay!) My family actually bought it off the side of the road from the original owner back in 2015. The 2.5 L engine isn't the fastest, but it's extremely hard to kill. Even on its last legs, I managed to drive it up a mountain to get the motor rebuilt. Personally, I would trust an old Chrysler more than anything else on the road these days! Thanks for listening to my story.

This is a great car. It's worth every dime. They're comfortable and great to drive. It's 13 years old and looks like new. Their engines are much better than the old 4 cyl. They have a lot of power behind them, and for you fast drivers, I raced a Mustang and beat it!

You bought this car needing a head gasket, but you replaced that and the timing belt. A few months later, you did a complete tune-up and right now you need to flush the transmission. I think that once you do that, it will be just about as good as new. I believe it's pretty good for a four-cylinder and cheap transmission (no overdrive). They really should have had the four speeds with overdrive standard, but all in all, it's not a bad car.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my LeBaron. I've had it for 5 years now and it's been a great ride. The V6 EFI provides plenty of acceleration power and I'm happy to report that I get 26 mpg with 6 cylinders. It's a real smooth ride at highway speeds. When I purchased it, my LeBaron was 9 years old and had 68K miles. Since then, I've put on 90K miles. While I've had some issues with the air conditioning units, I've found that to be a common problem with LeBarons. I've gone through 2 units, but I've spoken to three separate auto mechanics who have given me some great advice on how to keep it running smoothly. I've also noticed that my LeBaron burns a quart of oil per week, but my mechanic assures me that this may just be an issue with my car since it now has 150K miles. Overall, I'm really happy with my LeBaron and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable ride.

Congratulations on your purchase! It's always exciting to find a great deal on a car. Your 1990 Lebaron Convertible sounds like a real gem, with its dark blue color, blue interior, and black top. It's great to hear that it cleaned up so well and that you've only had to replace the rear left-hand power window motor. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it still sounds like a blast to drive. It's wonderful that you were able to pass it down to your son and are even considering getting another one for yourself. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
