2017 Hyundai Elantra gt problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.

Another engine-related problem is the engine mounts. Some owners have reported that the engine mounts are failing, causing the engine to vibrate excessively and potentially leading to other issues with the engine and transmission.

The steering and suspension system of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT has also been reported to have issues. Hyundai has issued a recall for this issue, and dealerships will replace the electronic power steering connector for affected vehicles.

The electrical system of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT has also been reported to have issues. Owners have reported problems with the accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, fuel leaks, oil leaks, and engine knock or ping. Some owners have reported that the car will not start or that the engine will not run properly due to these electrical issues.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the transmission. Some have reported that the transmission shifts roughly or that it will not shift into certain gears. Hyundai has issued a recall for some 2017 Elantra GT models due to transmission issues

Finally, some owners have reported problems with the paint and trim of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT. Is there any problems with the 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

What is the most common problem with the Hyundai Elantra?

A prevalent problem that the Hyundai Elantra's have is a subpar starter. A few signs of a bad starter are noises, smoke, and if the car won't start. Noises such as clicking, grinding, or a high-pitched sound can indicate that the starter is bad.

Why was the Elantra GT discontinued?

Hyundai said the decision was "due to [an] expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue and Kona." It's a shame that Hyundai is sacrificing the Elantra GT, because we always viewed it as a great crossover alternative thanks to its spacious rear seats, cavernous cargo capacity, and strong visibility.

What is the problem with the 2016 Elantra GT?

Most complaints concern the 2016 Elantra's powertrain, over problems like high engine oil consumption and malfunctioning automatic gearboxes. I have had zero recalls tho even with me experiencing this. And the paint is coming off, but at least that won't kill me.

This was before the recall was issued and was done for the recent purchase. The safety issue is that if not addressed, the roof will rust and damage the structural integrity of the cabin. When I just did a search, NOW there are no paint recalls for my VIN after inquiring about the fix with Hyundai customer service.

We have been told that unfortunately so many of hyundai's vehicle engines have been super problematic within the last decade. We were stranded on vacation. Had to pay for towing twice and a rental car to get back to North Carolina because we had to get back to work. We also have had to pay to diagnose the vehicle twice. We had the issue diagnosed with an independent service center Tuffys Auto in St. Johns Florida and now it currently is at Hyundai in St. Augustine. We have been without our vehicle for over a month and with the trending problems with these engines we shouldnt have to come out of pocket to fix it. Hyundai corporate has not been helpful at all even though we have had a case manager for over a month and they havent given us any info.

Negative 2017 Hyundai Elantra gt car reviews

  1. Cristina Gislason 2024-11-22

I have noticed a few issues with my Elantra GT that I wanted to share. Unfortunately, the USB port does not seem to charge iPhones. Additionally, I have had to replace two front tires in less than 3000 miles due to their low quality and inability to handle medium-sized potholes. If you live in a state with no potholes, you should be fine, but here in the Northeast, blowing a tire can be a real concern. The AM/FM reception is also quite poor, and I am currently only getting an average of 20 MPG. If you do experience any issues with your vehicle, it may take up to two weeks for your dealer to look at it. Lastly, I wanted to note that 3D is not available on the navigation system.

  2. Oran Haag 2024-09-08

I've only had this car for 10 days, and I've already encountered a few issues. When I stop and put it in P, it rolls a bit, which is a bit concerning. I contacted the dealership, but they weren't very helpful. To make matters worse, the service engine light came on while I was driving today. I'm a bit frustrated that they didn't make an appointment for me or respond to my email to the CEO of DolanAuto. It seems like they're only interested in taking your money. They even sold me a 2k warranty without my knowledge, which I had to cancel. I use my car for work, so it's crucial that it stays in P. Despite these issues, I do like the car. However, I'm disappointed that my salesman didn't explain the Bluetooth or the folders to me. I'll have to read the owner's manual to figure it out. I just need to get the service light checked, but I'm hesitant to go back to the dealership after what happened. Overall, I'm still hopeful that everything will work out.

  3. Davon Bernhard 2024-02-01

This car was great until it hit one hundred thousand miles, right when the warranty expired. Unfortunately, it started having problems, such as burning through oil quickly. I've had it checked out four times, but there are no leaks or other issues. I've read that other Hyundai users are experiencing the same problem. Sadly, I may have to trade it in soon, as I can't afford to get two oil changes every month to keep it running.

Positive 2017 Hyundai Elantra gt car reviews

  1. Orlando Price 2025-01-05

I bought this car mainly for its reliability and the spacious trunk that allows me to haul things around. The style package that I have added to the car includes rims and fog lamps, which many other Hyundai owners have complimented me on. I have even added a bike rack to the car roof, but I can also fit a bike in the back with the seats folded down. The interior is basic but nice, and I prefer the stock controls over the tech package as they are simple and easy to use. The 2.0 motor is very peppy, and the automatic transmission keeps the revs low for fuel economy. The sports suspension makes the car very flat around corners at speed. Although I only have two complaints, one being that you have to get the bare bones base model to get the excellent 6-speed manual, and the other being that the center armrest likes to slide forward if you are using it as a support to get in and out of the car. The A pillar is too wide and blocks your view at times. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and spacious vehicle.

  2. Trenton Bode 2024-11-21

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the backup camera and navigation on your car! It sounds like the car is the perfect size for downsizing without sacrificing cabin space or storage.

  3. Agustin Pfeffer 2024-11-02

I bought this car and, even though I was hesitant because it's a hatchback, I still love it!

  4. Quentin Dicki 2024-10-22

I can tell you really love your '16 Elantra GT! It sounds like you have all the bells and whistles with the technology package, sports package, LED tail lights, leather interior, and Navigation. The panoramic moon roof is such a cool feature too! I agree, it's a fantastic little car with a great look to match.

  5. Mathew Herman 2024-10-15

Rather sad, but I felt it needed to be said. If it weren't for this vehicle, I would've lost a loved one. This car kept them safe, while they only got a minor scrape. The car did its job to protect them and for that, I swear by Hyundais 100%.
