The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common 1989 Chevrolet Chevy van problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1989 Chevrolet Chevy Van, here are some common problems associated with this vehicle:

  1. Intake Manifold Gaskets May Leak Coolant or Engine Oil:
    • One of the common issues reported by owners of the Chevrolet G20 Van is related to intake manifold gaskets leaking coolant or engine oil. This can lead to engine performance issues, overheating, and potential damage if not addressed promptly.
  2. Stalling and Rough Idling Issues:
    • Owners have reported problems with stalling when the van gets hot at slow speeds, especially after lightly tapping the gas pedal. Additionally, rough idling, similar to a vacuum leak, has been observed. This issue could be attributed to various factors such as a faulty O2 sensor, air/idle controller, or fuel pressure irregularities.
  3. Ignition Module and Pickup Coil Problems:
    • Another common problem identified in the 1989 Chevrolet Van is related to the ignition module and pickup coil inside the distributor. Issues with these components can cause the van to turn over but not start. Testing for trigger grounding signals and ignition coil power is recommended to diagnose and address these issues effectively.
  4. General Maintenance Concerns:
    • Routine maintenance aspects like plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and filters play a crucial role in the overall performance of the vehicle. Neglecting these maintenance tasks can lead to issues like poor fuel efficiency, rough running, and potential stalling problems.

By addressing these common problems promptly and ensuring regular maintenance, owners of the 1989 Chevrolet Chevy Van can enhance the reliability and longevity of their vehicles. Regular inspections, timely repairs, and adherence to maintenance schedules are key to keeping the Chevy Van in optimal condition for safe and efficient operation.
