2016 Hyundai Azera problems

The Hyundai Grandeur (Korean: 현대 그랜저) is an executive sedan manufactured and marketed by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1986, over five generations.
From 1986 to 1996, the Grandeur was the flagship for Hyundai's South Korean range before the Hyundai Dynasty was introduced. It is marketed globally as the Hyundai Azera. As the Azera, it was the flagship of Hyundai's US and Canadian lineup until the arrival of the Genesis sedan. After the launch of the separate Genesis brand, the Grandeur/Azera resumed its place as the company's flagship.
As of the 2017 model year, the Azera is no longer marketed in the United States and Canada. The sedan continued to be available in South Korea and the Middle East.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

- VIN: kmhfh4jg8ga
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Air Bag light came on while driving. After getting it checked, the technician stated that the air bag module went out and was erased. A new module would need to be ordered and the old one replaced. repair was not done as the cost was expensive and I don't believe that I should pay for something that is a safety equipment issue, This should be under a lifetime warranty. Currently driving the vehicle without working air bags. Has not been reported to the manufacturer. Light first appeared in February of 2022.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-29
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: KMHFH4JG0GA
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The hydraulic hood lifting "hinges" did not hold the hood up. When I raised the hood to fill the window washer container, the hood fell, unhindered, on my left wrist, as I was taking the cap off of the filling tube. 2 seconds later it could have been my head as I would have been over the washer reservoir opening. The hand was very bruised, and the wrist was cut. (really hurt) Went to the dealer & he said this was the first Azera they had heard of with the problem but had seen several Sonatas with this problem. I believe the hydraulic lifters are the same, so perhaps the problem affects both models.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-08-01
- VIN: KMHFG4JG6GA
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I have been driving for 55 years, so I have a pretty good handle on "normal" as it pertains to driving. For the last couple of years I have noticed that the steering on my car "sticks" as I travel on nearly straight roads. It does not seem to pose a safety risk, but is very annoying as it causes the driver to over correct steering when it breaks free of the "sticking". This is not an occasional event, but a continuous, ongoing one. It is not noticeable when making turns. I have never had this problem analyzed due to the dealership costs.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-04-17
- VIN: KMHFH4JGXGA
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: THE STEERING WOULD ALMOST LOCK UP WHEN TRYING TO MAKE SMALL ADJUSTMENTS. DOESN'T SEEM TO HAPPEN (OR I HAVE NOT NOT NOTICED IT) IN TOWN, BUT DEFINITELY NOTICABLE DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING. I FEEL THIS TO BE A HAZARD IN CASE I NEED TO MAKE A SUDDEN STEERING CHANGE. BROUGHT IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY INDICATED IT WAS AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE, NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. PAID $120 FOR ALIGNMENT AND IT SEEMED TO BE OK FOR A LITTLE BIT. ISSUE IS BACK NOW 11,000 MILES LATER. I FOUND A TSB ON A SIMILAR ISSUE, WHICH I NOTED TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE NOT RELATED.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-12-20
- VIN: KMHFG4JG7GA
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: THE STEERING SEEMS TO "LOCK" OR STICK IN POSITION WHILE DRIVING. IT SOMETIME TAKES CONSIDERABLE FORCE TO MAKE THE STEERING TURN,. THE ACTION NEEDED TO "BREAK" THE STEERING FREE CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE. AT HIGHWAY SPEED, ESPECIALLY UNDER SLIPPERY CONDITIONS, THIS COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS ALSO NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE TURNING. WE LEASED THE CAN WHEN IT WAS NEW AND PURCHASED IT WHEN THE LEASE WAS EXPIRED, SO I KNOW THE HISTORY OF THIS VEHICLE. THERE HAVE BEEN NO ACCIDENTS OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE SO FAR. THE VEHICLE HAS 32,000 MILES ON IT NOW. THIS CONDITION HAS GOTTEN WORSE IN THE LAST MONTH. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU COULD GIVE WITH THIS.

Traded in my 2013 Santa Fe Sport base model. I was looking for something nice with a little more power, so I test drove the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and the Impala. However, the Azera beats them all on value. You get a fully loaded car for the same price as their base models. I absolutely love this car and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a full-size sedan that is also a luxury sedan.

Great performance. There's plenty of room for occupants to stretch their legs, and the ride is smooth. It's a good value and looks and feels classy.
Oliver Schaefer 2025-05-03
We previously owned a 2007 Santa Fe Limited and a 2011 Hyundai Azera Limited, both of which were purchased new, before buying our new 2016 Hyundai Azera Limited. We never encountered any issues with our previous Hyundais. They required very little maintenance (regular oil and filter changes) and were extremely reliable. The Azera Limited is an excellent value compared to other cars in its class, offering both comfort and high mpg on long trips (4000 miles or more). It comes with all the features you could want, so there's no need to pick and choose options. The sedan is spacious, comfortable, and beautifully designed. We had a great experience with our dealers and couldn't ask for anything better.

There were several factors that drew me to the Azera. While we have a CUV for everyday use, I wanted a luxury cruiser for longer trips. I was torn between a Chevrolet and the Hyundai, but ultimately I preferred the looks and interior of the Hyundai. There aren't many cars in this price range that offer V-6 performance with front-wheel-drive, so I was pleased with my choice. After owning the car for over a year, I can say that the engine power combined with the auto/manual transmission produces the performance I was looking for. The gas mileage is right on with the manufacturer's numbers, and I've been getting close to 30 mpg on the highway regardless of speed. The seats are also quite comfortable for long periods of travel, and they can be heated or cooled depending on your preference.Overall, I've been happy with the car, but there are a couple of things that have disappointed me. The ride is quite harsh due to the low-profile tires, which I should have taken into consideration when comparing this vehicle to the competitor from GM. Additionally, I've noticed excessive wear on the driver's seat in the bolster area, which seems odd after only 14,000 miles of use. While it's not a huge problem, it's something that will likely get worse as the car ages. In hindsight, I'm not exactly sure where this vehicle fits. It's not a sports sedan, and the ride doesn't quite qualify as a luxury cruiser. On the plus side, the trunk is quite adequate, the climate control works well, and the interior is spacious. While I don't think this model has much of a future due to its dismal sales numbers, it may offer a great buy as a used vehicle.Just wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. I put 4,000 miles on it in under two months, mostly on the interstate at high speeds, and it performed beautifully. The only issue I've had so far is excessive wear on the driver seat fabric. Since then, I've only put 3,000 miles on the car because I prefer driving our compact SUV. However, I still love this vehicle and highly recommend it for those interested in performance. I only drive it 3 to 5 days a month now, mostly to keep the battery charged. I recently replaced the battery, but I suspect the lack of use may have shortened its life. At the 26,000 mile mark, the car is still running smoothly with no problems. As a retired person, I seldom have the need for a second backup vehicle, but this car serves that purpose perfectly.

Congratulations on your one year anniversary with your 2016 Hyundai Azera Limited! It's great to hear that you still love it. This car is truly a fantastic luxury automobile without the luxury price tag. It's surprising that Hyundai hasn't talked about this car more, as it's definitely worth the attention. I discovered the Azera when I visited a Hyundai dealer a year ago to look at a Genesis, and the salesperson recommended the Azera because I could get all of the Genesis luxury features at a significantly lower price point. Of course, now that Hyundai is launching its luxury Genesis brand separate from Hyundai, they are not bringing the Azera back for 2018. However, this decision allowed you to buy your Azera at a deep discount, which is a win for you. This car has everything you could ever want in a luxury sedan, and it's beautiful inside and out with sleek styling and a very well thought out cabin of comfort and conveniences. Living in hot Texas, it's great to hear that you love your ventilated seats and automatic sun shade for the rear window. Ventilated seats are a must-have in hot weather! Although you mentioned that the lane departure warning system was oversensitive, it's great that the car gives you the option to deactivate it. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic control with the backup camera are terrific features. It would have been better if the front seat adjustments were placed on the side of the seats as in most cars rather than on the doors, which can be slightly difficult to reach and adjust while also sitting back at the same time. Overall, it's clear that you won't find a better luxury car in this price point. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
