2007 Honda S2000 problems

honda logo

The Honda S2000 is a front-mid engine open top sports car that was manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Honda, from 1999 until 2009. First shown as a concept car called the SSM at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, the production version was launched on April 15, 1999, to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary. The S2000 is named for its engine displacement of two litres, while "S" stood for "sports" carrying on in the tradition of the S500, S600, and S800 roadsters of the 1960s.

Several revisions were made throughout the car's production life, including changes to the engine, gearbox, suspension, interior and exterior. Officially two variants exist: the initial launch model was given the chassis code AP1; though cosmetically similar, the facelifted version, known as the AP2 in North America and Japan, incorporated significant changes to the drivetrain and suspension. Production of the S2000 ceased on August 19, 2009.

The Honda S2000 was notable for its exceptional specific power output of about 124 hp per litre, or about two horsepower per cubic inch, the highest of any mass production, naturally aspirated engined car, until 2010.

The S2000 has since become a legitimate modern classic car, having seen a significant appreciation in price for valued examples in good condition. In the JDM community and the car community as a whole, the most sought-after models are special edition productions such as the CR (Club Racer) in the USA market; the standard AP1 and AP2 models have achieved collectible status as well.

Common 2007 Honda S2000 problems

The Honda S2000, produced from 1999 to 2009, is a popular sports car known for its high performance and sleek design. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its issues. Here are some common problems with the 2007 Honda S2000, based on complaints from owners:

  • Engine failure: Some owners of the 2000 model year reported engine failure around 60,000 miles, with the only solution being to replace the engine entirely. This issue also received a severity rating of 10 out of 10 due to the high repair cost, which could exceed $1,700.
  • Steering wheel lock-up: Owners of the 2001 model reported that the steering wheel could lock up later in the car’s life, particularly around 80,000 miles. This issue is not well-understood, and there is no clear solution. However, it is considered a serious issue due to the potential safety risks.
  • Excessive gear grinding: This is a minor inconvenience issue that affects all S2000 model years. The gears can produce excessive grinding noises, which can be annoying for drivers.
  • Excessive noise from wheel bearings: This is another minor inconvenience issue that affects all S2000 model years. The wheel bearings can produce excessive noise, which can be distracting for drivers.
  • Engine misfiring: This issue affects all S2000 model years and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as worn spark plugs or faulty ignition coils. It can result in a loss of power and reduced fuel efficiency.

In addition to these issues, the S2000 has some design features that may not be ideal for all drivers. For example, the car has a cramped interior with limited legroom, and it can produce significant road noise and have a stiff suspension that hampers ride quality.

It is important to note that the S2000 has a loyal following and fan base, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the car. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become serious problems.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-09-02
  • VIN: JHMAP21457S
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I HAD MY MASTER CYLINDER REPLACED WHEN MY CAR WAS AT 40,000 MILES IN THE CLUTCH. NOW AT 68,777 MILES THE CLUTCH HAS SOMETHING WRONG BUT STILL SHIFTS INTO GEAR AT THIS POINT. NOW THEY ARE GUESSING THAT THE CLUTCH FORK IS WEARING OUT WHICH IS OVER $2,000.00 TO REPLACE. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY ANOTHER MECHANIC THAT MY MASTER CYLINDER DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A HONDA PART. I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE TO HAVE THIS REPLACED RIGHT NOW SO I WAS TOLD I COULD DRIVE IT BY HONDA. IF IT GOES OUT ON THE FREEWAY I WON'T BE ABLE TO SHIFT GEARS. MY CAR IS NOT BEEN DRIVING HARD AND IT'S WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND SERVICED PROPERLY ALONG WITH BEING GARAGED ALWAYS. I PUT AROUND 8,000 MILES A YEAR ON IT AND I KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IT WELL. I DON'T RACE IT OR SPEED SHIFT EVER. I FEEL THAT THIS CAR HAS FAULTY PARTS IN THE CLUTCH AND PLATES ALONG WITH THE MASTER CYLINDER. I'M NOT A MECHANIC BUT I DO KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT CARS AND DID MY RESEARCH ON HONDA'S. THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO HAVE LONG TIME RUNNING CARS. I EVEN TOOK OUT A 7 YEAR WARRANTY SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO PAY SO MUCH OUT OF POCKET. IF IT WAS DIFFERENT THINGS HAPPENING I WOULDN'T QUESTION IT BUT THIS IS ALL TRANSMISSION THINGS AND I'M VERY WORRIED THAT THEY WERE FAULTY TO BEGIN WITH. WHEN I PRESS THE CLUTCH DOWN IT SOMETIMES CATCHES AT THE TOP PART. IF THAT DOESN'T ENGAGE I CAN'T SLOW DOWN OR STOP. *TR

Negative 2007 Honda S2000 car reviews

  1. Aric Johns 2024-10-29

I leased my S2000 for three years. It's a really fun car to drive, but it's not the most economical option out there. While it has a lot of power, it doesn't have much room for anything else. If you're single and not planning on taking any long trips, then it's perfect for you. However, the car and trunk are quite small, so it's difficult to fit a suitcase in it. It's a great car for college kids who have time to drive around and are slim enough to fit in it. I always had to be careful about who I offered a ride to, as not everyone would fit in it.

  2. Holden Macejkovic 2024-10-28

This car is an absolute blast to drive! I use it as my daily driver and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Although the cabin may not be the roomiest, the seats are incredibly comfortable, making long drives a breeze. Unfortunately, I did experience a few issues recently. After purchasing the car used in 2008 with only 14K miles on it, I had no problems until this past year when the AC compressor and clutch master cylinder needed repairs. Despite these setbacks, I still love driving this car and hope to have many more trouble-free miles ahead!

  3. Finn Kuhlman 2024-07-06

The interior is in excellent condition and all stock. However, the exterior is a bit mixed. The windshield has several significant rock chips and the paint behind the front wheels shows clear coat rock chips, but is otherwise in good condition. The underside does show evidence of mild corrosion from being driven on chemically treated roads. The front tires date back to 2007, while the rear tires date back to 2013. Despite these issues, the car drives fine and has very low mileage. It is all stock, but be prepared to invest another $2k in this one, including a good cleaning of the underside. It's definitely not an Arizona car.

Positive 2007 Honda S2000 car reviews

  1. Ben Ullrich 2025-01-01

This little Honda S2K has been a gem for us! As residents of the Colorado snow country, we prefer to garage it in bad weather and use it mainly during the summer. We've owned many great sports cars and sports sedans, but this one is highly reliable, fast, and not too expensive. Most of our driving is on open mountain roads, with hardly any stop-and-go in-town driving. After three summers of use, we've consistently gotten at least 30 miles per gallon, which is totally unlike the experience that some others have reported. And we definitely don't baby it - we love that VTEC zone! The trunk is spacious enough for two carry-on bags, a small cooler, and a couple of parkas. Our longest trip was 10 days, to Banff/Lake Louise.

  2. Jo Luettgen 2024-11-28

The car corners as if it's on rails and the engine is quite spirited, but you need to work for it. However, the engine really comes alive at 6,000 RPM!

  3. Fred Grimes 2024-11-05

If you're interested in one of these cars, I recommend buying it soon. They're becoming harder to find. You can't go wrong with a Honda 2000.

  4. Jaleel Pacocha 2024-10-28

I've been admiring the Honda S2000 ever since it first hit the market. I've owned a '91 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and a '96 Mazda Miata, and I'm really enjoying my new convertible, except for when I'm on the freeway. Going over 60 mph makes me nervous, especially when navigating bends, as the car tends to fishtail and I struggle to regain control. Unfortunately, in Texas, driving below 70 mph on the freeway can be quite dangerous.

  5. Milo Adams 2024-10-01

The S2000 is a fantastic driver's car. The steering is quick and precise, allowing for easy maneuvering and handling of curves. The brakes are superb and the power delivery is excellent, even below the VTEC range. While it does require premium gas, the mileage is still excellent for day-to-day driving. If you use the VTEC mode frequently, expect a significant drop in mpg. Overall, the driving experience is exhilarating, especially if you live in an area with lots of curvy or mountainous roads. It's the perfect stress relief and even enjoyable for daily commutes. In summary, this uncompromising sports car is sure to delight anyone who loves driving!
