Common 2006 Ford Freestar problems
The Ford Freestar, a minivan produced between 2004 and 2007, has faced several common problems based on complaints from owners. Two major issues are the EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold plugging with sludge and causing misfires, and transmission problems, particularly transmission failure without warning.
- EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system in the Ford Freestar is designed to help reduce exhaust emissions. However, the EGR Orifice in the Intake Manifold can become clogged with sludge over time. This sludge buildup can restrict the flow of exhaust gases, leading to misfires and other engine performance issues.
- Transmission Problems
Transmission problems are the most commonly reported issues in the Ford Freestar, particularly transmission failure without warning. The 2005 model year has the most overall complaints, with the most-reported problem being transmission failure without warning.
The torque converter, which is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission, can fail in the 2004-05 Ford Freestar models. This failure can lead to widespread and dangerous transmission problems, including sudden and complete transmission failure without warning.
These transmission problems can be costly to repair, with average costs ranging from $2,300 to $2,900, depending on the model year and the specific issue.
In addition to these issues, the 2006 Ford Freestyle, which shares many components with the Freestar, has reported problems with sudden loss of power, uncontrolled acceleration, peeling paint, premature brake wear, and transmission shifter issues.
While the Ford Freestar has faced several common problems, it is important to note that these issues may not affect all vehicles of this model. Potential buyers should conduct thorough research and consider seeking the advice of a trusted mechanic before making a purchasing decision.

Which is one of the years that was recalled so why is my 2005 Ford Freestar van not one of the ones under that recall. Is it cause it’s a 2005 cause the transmission was manufactured in 2004. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
- VIN: 2fmza52266b
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: During rush hour I was pulling out of a Walgreens parking lot to take a left hand turn. As soon as I gave it gas it went forward about 7 feet and then it seemed as though my van went into neutral on its own. I looked on the dash and saw it was still in drive. I was stuck in the middle of traffic in the middle of my left turn. My car was sideways with traffic coming toward me from both sides I tried to put it in 3rd ,1nd, reverse. The shifter moved to those gears but all that happened when I gave it gas was revve up the rpm. I'm EXTREMELY lucky that the on coming traffic didn't side swipe me. I was able to get help pushing it to a side street. Where I turned it off for 30 min and tried again, still no vehicle movement, checked transmission fluid... It was good. I was not getting any transmission engagement. There was no warning lights illuminated prior to this incident and there is currently no warning lights illuminated now. I would absolutely LOVE if someone could inspect my vehicle and I'm available anytime for someone to do so. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk because I was unable to complete my left turn my vehicle was stuck sideways during rush hour with on coming traffic coming from both ways. I haven't taken the vehicle to the ford dealer or any other independent service center. Thankfully there was no accident, so I didn't have the need to call the police.

When my wife and I decided to replace our Sedona, we didn't hesitate to choose the Freestar. We think Ford has done an excellent job creating a safe, comfortable, and attractive vehicle at a reasonable price. I would like to address one issue, though - some consumer magazines have claimed that the vehicle is underpowered. However, I believe that the Freestar has ample power for a back road pass or a trip up I40 or I26 into the mountains of NC. While it may not have the same power as my '04 Marauder with SuperChip and K&N air induction, it still performs well.
-
We bought the Freestar 2 weeks ago and took it on a trip to South Texas. We averaged 18 MPG on the trip, which is a bit disappointing considering it's rated at 24. However, I still give it a well above average rating. Overall, it's a great car!

Hi there! I noticed that you've owned your van for a year now and I'm so glad to hear that it's been great for you!
-
Went from an Explorer to this. Great change! The cargo space is fantastic, and with 7 seats and a DVD player, it's perfect for my family. It's also easy to drive and gets better mileage. I don't feel like I'm driving a hulk, but I still have all the space I need. I definitely recommend it!
-
I love the optional audio with the separate source selection. I agree with other reviewers that the rear seats could use about 1.5 inches of additional height. It would also be great to have more driver's knee room and a tow package without a hitch, but I understand that may be a Ford marketing issue. Overall, I absolutely love my vehicle and its powerful performance. I'm excited to hook up my 200lb camper and see how it pulls. By the way, I also owned a 95 Windstar and loved it as well!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share that my 2006 Freestart just hit 120,000 miles! Recently, I had to take it to the shop to get my transmission rebuilt. The mechanic mentioned that my torque converter had fallen apart, causing lots of metal pieces to get into the pump and inner workings. It seems like this is a common issue with my car!

I will never buy another Ford product in my life. However, it is important to note that my experience with a particular van has been less than satisfactory. Despite multiple visits to the shop, the issues with the vehicle persist. While I understand that every product can have its flaws, I do believe that the issues with this van are significant and have impacted my perception of the brand. It is my hope that Ford will take steps to address these concerns and improve the quality of their products.

I had previously owned a 99 Galant which I was content with, but with the arrival of my third child, I required more space. I was apprehensive about replacing a trouble-free car with one that had issues, which unfortunately has come to pass. Despite being informed by a Ford veteran of 15 years that the popping noise in the intake is normal, it persists. Additionally, the van has started stalling while driving, and despite numerous checks, no issues have been identified. The interior space requires improvement, and accessing the third row seats is a challenge, with my 3-year-old daughter having to squeeze her way back there. However, I remain confident that these issues can be resolved, and I am committed to finding a solution.
