Common 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Volkswagen Cabrio 2000, several common problems have been reported:
- Noise in Manual Transmission Models: Another common complaint involves noise issues in manual transmission models of the Volkswagen Cabrio 2000. Unusual noises during gear shifts or while driving can indicate underlying transmission problems that may require attention from a qualified mechanic.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical issues have been a recurring concern among Volkswagen Cabrio owners. Complaints range from turn signals randomly stopping to problems with the power windows and cruise control. These electrical malfunctions can affect the safety and functionality of the vehicle, requiring thorough diagnostics and repairs by experienced technicians.
- Engine Light: Some owners have reported the engine light staying on in the 2001 Cabrio model. This warning light can indicate various engine-related issues that need to be addressed promptly to prevent potential damage or performance issues.
- Power Windows Failure: Complaints about power windows failing in the 2001 Cabrio highlight potential issues with the window mechanisms or electrical components. Malfunctioning power windows can be inconvenient and compromise the comfort and security of the vehicle.
- Rough Idle and Acceleration: Owners of the 2000 Cabrio have reported rough idle and acceleration issues. These symptoms can point towards engine or fuel system problems that require professional diagnosis and repair to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
- Door Molding Falling Off: In the 1998 Cabrio model, complaints about door molding falling off have been noted. While this may seem like a minor issue, it can affect the aesthetics and potentially lead to water leaks or other structural concerns if not addressed promptly.
These common problems with the Volkswagen Cabrio 2000 highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and thorough inspections to address issues early and ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
What year did VW stop making Cabrio?
The second generation were introduced in 1994, the third in 1998. The engines for the Cabriolet are almost the same as for the regular Golf. The Golf Cabriolet was discontinued in 2002, and succeeded by the Volkswagen New Beetle Cabriolet and the Volkswagen Eos.
What was the last year for VW Cabrio?
2002
Cabriolet versions of the fourth-generation Golf and sixth-generation Golf were produced between 1998 and 2002 and 2011 and 2016, respectively. Overall, more than 770,000 Golf cabriolets were produced over a 37-year period – all at the Karmann plant in Osnabrück, which recently ceased production of the Porsche Boxster.
Why is my cruise control not working on my VW Cabrio?
The most common reasons a Volkswagen Cabrio cruise control isn't working are failed control module, sensor or switch issues, or throttle actuation problems.
What are the trim levels for a 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio?
Three trim levels are available for 2002: value-packed GL, mid-level GLS and high-end GLX. All three come with CFC-free air conditioning, ABS, an AM/FM stereo with CD changer pre-wiring, a glass rear window with defogger, side airbags and an anti-theft system.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-05-28
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: PURCHASED A 2000 VW CABRIO FROM A USED CAR DEALERSHIP IN NEW JERSEY (THAT WAS MY FIRST MISTAKE AS I AM A NEW YORK RESIDENT.) TEST DROVE AND VISUAL INSPECTION APPEARED GREAT. DROVE THE CAR OFF THE LOT AND WITHIN 3 MILES, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. CHECKED FLUIDS, PROCEEDED WITH OUR TRIP HOME. WITHIN 10 MILES, THE CAR'S MANUAL TRANSMISSION JUMPS OUT OF FIFTH GEAR WHILE GOING 65MPS ON A 4 LANE HIGHWAY. WITH THE DEALERSHIP CLOSED (AND BEING THE CAR WAS SOLD "AS-IS", WE LIMPED HOME. THE 2 HOUR TRIP ENDED UP TAKING NEARLY 3 HOURS. MECHANIC FOUND THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN REPLACED BUT NOT REFILLED WITH TRANSMISSION FLUID. BRAND NEW TRANNY INSTALLED ONLY TO FIND THE STARTER WAS ALSO MALFUNCTIONING. MEANWHILE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON DUE TO A $409.00 SECONDARY AIR PUMP FAILURE. I HADN'T EVEN OWNED THE CAR 2 WEEKS AND HAD ALREADY SPEND OVER $2000 IN REPAIRS. I FINALLY GOT THE CAR BACK FROM MY MECHANIC, DROVE IT FOR ONE DAY, AND NOW WE APPEAR TO HAVE A TIMING BELT ISSUE AND HAVE BEEN ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR AS THERE IS A POTENTIAL INTERFERENCE WITH MY PISTONS IF THE TIMING BELT BREAKS WHILE DRIVING. OH, AND TO BOOT, I NEED A NEW SET OF REAR BRAKES. BOTTOM LINE, IF ANYONE EVER DREAMS OF BUYING A CABRIO, DON'T DO IT UNLESS YOU HAVE UNLIMITED FUNDS AND A BACK UP CAR TO DRIVE. THIS CAR SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A HOBBY AND NOT A RELIABLE FORM OF TRANSPORTATION. *TR

- VIN: 3VWDC21VXYM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE HAD VARIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR THE SPEEDOMETER FREEZING OR THE SINCE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. SOMETIMES MY AIR CONDITIONER WON'T START. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, ABS OR THE CHECK TRUNK COMES ON HAS BEEN DOING THIS SINCE THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS JUST THE SUMMER HEAT. RECENTLY LAST MARCH I TOOK IT TO FREEWAY THEY SAID IT WAS ONE PART THAT WAS FAILING. I BOUGHT THE PART FROM VOLKSWAGEN AND HAD IT INSTALLED. THE LIGHT STILL CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO VOLKSWAGEN RIVERSIDE THEY SAID IT WAS A FUSE YET I HAD ALREADY PAID FOR THE OTHER PART. I ALSO BOUGHT A TURN SIGNAL SWITCH BECAUSE FREEWAY SAID THAT IS WHY MY HAZARDS COME ON INSTEAD OF A RIGHT TURN SIGNAL. IT STILL BLINKS HAZARDS TILL THIS DAY. EVEN AFTER I TOOK IT TO VOLKSWAGEN RIVERSIDE SINCE FREEWAY VOLKSWAGEN COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT. VOLKSWAGEN RIVERSIDE TOOK MY CAR APART AND STILL COULD NOT FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE ELECTRICAL. THE MECHANIC WAS LOOKING FOR THE PROBLEM ALL DAY AND WHEN HE PUT MY CAR BACK TOGETHER HE FORGOT TO PUT THE LIGHT FIXTURE BACK INTO THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY CAR. BECAUSE OF THAT A BULB MELTED SOME PLASTIC AND IT WON'T FIT BACK IN SO IT'S HANGING IN MY TRUNK. THIS IS HAZARDOUS BECAUSE I DRIVE TO WORK ON THE FREEWAY EVERY DAY. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THESE PROBLEMS ANYMORE. I JUST WANT SOMEONE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS REALLY WRONG AND FIX IT. I HAVE SPENT APPROX 1,000 -2,000 DOLLARS IN REPAIRS THAT DIDN'T SEEM TO EVEN BE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS . SO NOW I HAVE A NEW TURN SIGNAL SWITCH AND SOME OTHER PART THAT WAS LIKE 300. NOT TO MENTION THE FUSES I HAVE BOUGHT AND WATER PUMPS, RELAY SWITCH AND MANY OTHER PARTS. I HAVE BEEN PAYING FIXING PROBLEMS THAT HAVE EXISTED SINCE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG JUST THE HEAT. YET, AFTER SOCKING ALL OF THIS MONEY INTO THE CAR THE PROBLEMS STILL EXIST. JUST THE OTHER DAY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN. *NM

THE MUFFLER PLACE THAT DID THE WORK TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE DONE MORE THAN 10 CABRIO'S WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I WILL HAVE TO HAVE THE REMAINDER OF THE WORK DONE AT VW AS THE ENGINE WILL NEED TO BE DROPPED...THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE.*AK

Great fun car to zip around town. Terrific VW stereo sounds with an easy to operate top! Car is solid for the price and drives like a German engineered car without the sticker shock!
-
Great little car! Have you considered tossing in a K&N air filter to give it back some of its missing power? The car handles like a dream. I'm happy to own the GLS model instead of the lesser GL. In my opinion, the GL looks cheap, maybe it's the rims. The power top on the GLS is also a nice touch.

I really enjoyed the test drive of the car, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues after leaving the dealership. Initially, there was a problem with a bad rim that caused the same wheel to go flat four times. Despite the dealer claiming it was the tire, the tire guys said the opposite. Eventually, after four trips, the rim was replaced and I haven't had a flat since. Additionally, the seat warmer stopped working and burned the fuse, which took the dealer four hours to diagnose. Finally, the manual transmission failed while I was driving 65 mph on the highway, which was quite an experience. If you have had a similar experience, please feel free to report it at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

I love my 1999 little cab! I bought it in 2005 with only 12000 km on the clock. Amazing! Although, I was a bit disappointed when I had to replace the drive shaft at 50,000 km - hrrmph! Hi Andrew, hope you're doing well!

This car is so much fun to drive! My wife absolutely loves it because it's small and easy to maneuver in tight spaces. The electric roof is a great feature and everything is well-designed and works perfectly. We even appreciate the German styling, which isn't too austere like in the Golf GLS. With gas prices on the rise, the mileage is also quite good. It's a shame that Volkswagen stopped producing these cars, but we're excited to have a collectible car soon!

I strongly advise against purchasing any VW products. Despite being driven less than 6,000 miles per year, my 6-year-old car has experienced multiple issues, including the replacement of the convertible top operator twice, air conditioning failure, delamination of the cloth top seams, and occasional malfunctioning of the electric window operators. These persistent issues have led me to conclude that this car is a lemon.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with this car. While it hasn't been the best fit for me, I think it could work for others. I've had some trouble with the electronics, but I know that German cars are known for their great driving experience. Unfortunately, I've had to replace some parts, like the gauge cluster, alarm module, window pinch sensor, and cruise control relay. Additionally, the leather wears out a bit faster than I would like. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

Congratulations on your new car! It looks great and runs well. Although there are a few things that need to be fixed, such as the front axles, wheel bearing, and seat belt light, it seems like the previous owner took good care of it and even replaced some important parts like the oil pan gasket, front rotors, struts, tires, timing belt, and water pump. It's normal to have some minor issues with a used car, but overall it sounds like you made a good choice. Enjoy your new ride!

I replaced two wheel bearings, an axle, strut assembly, and a dry rotted EGR vacuum tube when the car only had 35k miles. Unfortunately, the stereo doesn't sound good and lacks bass. I have had some issues with the dealer service, especially when my second gauge cluster died after 12 months and 1 day from my last replacement. I contacted VW of North America, but they did not take responsibility for the quality of their parts. Despite this, I still recommend considering other options before purchasing this car.

I have owned my cabbie for four years and it has been a reliable car. However, after reaching 30,000 miles, I started experiencing some issues with the car stalling at traffic lights. Despite taking it to the dealer, they were unable to find any issues. Unfortunately, this led to an accident when the car stalled in the middle of an intersection. Since then, I have spent close to $3,000 on engine repairs in the last 5 months. Although the car has been well-maintained, these issues have been frustrating. However, I am confident that with proper care and maintenance, the car will continue to serve me well.
