The Porsche Macan is a compact luxury crossover SUV (D-segment) produced by German manufacturer Porsche, a luxury car marque of Volkswagen Group, since February 2014. It is the smallest SUV from Porsche below the Cayenne.

First generation (2014)

Initially announced in November 2010 as a development project, and formally announced by Porsche in March 2011, the 'Macan' model name was decided in 2012 and is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger. It was known by its code name Cajun, a portmanteau of Cayenne Junior or comes from a name of a member of ethnic group descended from Acadia living in the U.S. state of Louisiana (not to be confused with Porsche-Diesel Junior tractor).

The production version of the Macan was unveiled at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show and 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. European models went on sales in spring 2014 and the initial line-up of models included the Macan S and Macan Turbo. U.S. market models arrived at dealerships in late spring 2014 as 2015 model year vehicle. Early models included Macan S and Macan Turbo.

The Porsche Macan shares its platform and wheelbase with the first generation Audi Q5 (2008–2017). The suspension configuration is based on, and heavily modified from the Audi, but the engine, transfer case, suspension tuning, interior and exterior body are unique to the Macan. It is also 1.7 in (43 mm) longer and 1.4 in (36 mm) wider than a Q5.

The Macan is produced alongside the Panamera which it shares a strong resemblance, in Leipzig, Germany in a newly extended factory. The Macan is also intended to be 'sportier' than the Cayenne; for instance the Macan has a standard 7-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox, which is more responsive, while the Cayenne has an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission for smoother shifts.

In July 2018, Porsche announced that more than 350,000 units of the Macan have been delivered worldwide since 2014, with over 100,000 deliveries in the Chinese market alone.

Common 2017 Porsche Macan gts problems

The 2017 Porsche Macan GTS has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include problems with the sound system, reliability, manufacturing quality, infotainment system, brakes, and fuel efficiency.

One of the most common problems reported by owners is with the sound system. Some owners have reported issues with the audio quality, including distortion and poor sound quality. This can be a frustrating issue for owners who expect high-quality audio from a luxury vehicle like the Macan.

Another common problem reported by owners is reliability issues. Despite the Macan's reputation for performance and luxury, some owners have reported problems with the vehicle's reliability. These issues include problems with the engine, transmission, and electrical systems. Some owners have reported that the vehicle has been in the shop for repairs more often than they would like, which can be a significant inconvenience.

Manufacturing quality is another area where the Macan has been known to have problems. Some owners have reported issues with the fit and finish of the vehicle, including problems with the paint, trim, and interior materials. These issues can detract from the overall appearance and feel of the vehicle, and can be frustrating for owners who expect high-quality craftsmanship from a luxury brand like Porsche.

The infotainment system is another area where the Macan has been known to have problems. Some owners have reported issues with the system's functionality, including problems with the navigation, audio, and climate control systems. These issues can be frustrating for owners who rely on the infotainment system for daily use.

Brake problems are another common issue reported by Macan owners. Some owners have reported issues with the service brakes, including excessively long travel before the brakes engage. This issue seems to be more pronounced at slow speeds and in parking situations, which can lead to accidents or damage if the vehicle does not stop in time.

Fuel efficiency is another area where the Macan has been known to have problems. Some owners have reported that the vehicle's fuel efficiency is not as good as they expected, which can be a significant concern for those who use the vehicle for daily commuting or long trips.

In addition to these common problems, the Macan has also been subject to several recalls. These recalls include issues with the occupant detection system, which may deactivate the passenger airbag, and a potential fuel leak in the fuel pump flange, which could lead to a fire if it comes into contact with an ignition source.

In conclusion, while the 2017 Porsche Macan GTS is generally reliable and well-liked by owners, used car buyers should be aware of the common issues and recalls associated with this model year. It is important to do thorough research and consider these issues when purchasing a used Macan.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
  • VIN: WP1AG2A52HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Not in a crash, but the leather on the dashboard is peeling off and airbags may not deploy properly because of it. I think this is a safety concern if not addressed early. Leather on dashboard is peeling off due to poor manufacturing.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • VIN: WP1AF2A53HL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The fuel flange failed causing gas to leak from the vehicle and subsequent fumes from the gasoline leaking. The part was recalled by Porsche and repaired, however Porsche was not able to tell me when the repair was done, what was done nor where it was done. I paid out of pocket for the same failure to be fixed, meaning their previous covered repair either was never completed, or Porsche's solution was put a band-aid on the problem instead of a complete fix. Keep in mind, the car was parked in my garage that filled with the stench of gas (which explodes in high pressure or a spark). I have paid for the repair and it still smells of gas. This is a safety issue of possible fire/explosion due to fumes/gas that leaks due to a failure of the flange.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
  • VIN: WP1AF2A55HL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: When reversing the transfer case has failed causing it to lurch uncontrollably. also when driving at slow speeds in first gear it stumbles causing erratic driving. This has failed on a number of cars and the extended warranty is not long enough to cover cars that are always failing

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The front passenger seat occupancy sensor mat degraded and fails to detect a passenger in the front seat.
2024-03-14

AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
  • VIN: WP1AF2A55HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: airbag light comes on and off intermittently I am aware there were some problems with the airbag sensor that year and recalls for other models, not my vin, I have called and confirmed there are none for mine. seems to act up more after or while I have a passenger so I suspect (almost positive) this is for the passenger airbag. also when I have a passenger the amber indicator that says airbag on off will randomly switch to off and I'll get the dash light. this makes me think its the airbag weight sensor pad that deteriorates easily that other cars had a recall for but not mine. no water was spilled on the seat before it started acting up the way it has been. as well, the engine motor mounts have a tendency to break fairly easily and fast causing vibrations and possible safety issues.

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Porsche Macan GTS. The contact stated that upon attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. After a visual inspection of the fuel system, the contact became aware that the fuel pump flange was cracked, causing a fuel leak. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the fuel pump flange. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V077000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) and 17V289000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-21
  • VIN: WP1AG2A54HL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving east on I-40 in North Carolina, my power steering catastrophically failed and I had to use all of my arm strength to steer the vehicle. The section of I-40 where this event occurred is extremely curvy (near the Haywood Rest Area) and there is no margin for error. If I had not been alone and totally concentrating on my driving, I could envision a severe accident as there were cars all around me. I managed to drive the vehicle to my Porsche dealer in Columbia, SC for repairs. They found multiple faults for the steering torque sensors and determined that the electric steering rack was faulty. They replaced the steering rack. Prior to this event, I had complained to the Porsche dealer about rubbing noises in the steering. The dealer replaced the steering shaft but the noise came back.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-04
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WP1AB2A50HL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While driving at approximately 40 mph, traffic began to slow. When I attempted to slow to match traffic conditions, my brake pedal offered almost no resistance and sank to the floor. The car did not slow. I pumped the brake pedal repeatedly but it had no connection to the cars brakes. A vehicle collision occurred as a result as I coasted into the car ahead of me.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: WP1AA2A54HL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The specific concern pertains to the routing of sunroof water drains from the roof to the wheel well of several Porsche vehicles. In this case, the rear water drains are routed directly over fuses and other electronic components within the vehicle. One of the electronic components affected, a Park Assist Control Unit (part 95B 919 475 L), controls multiple vehicle safety functions including perimeter sensors and the backup camera. When this unit fails, the backup camera is blank and perimeter sensors that beep to notify the driver of potentially hidden objects (or people) close to the vehicle do not function. Such failure may jeopardize the overall safety of vehicle occupants and other road users and may affect safe operation of the vehicle. This Park Assist Control Unit has failed in my Porsche Macan on three separate occasions due to corrosion of the terminals. The Porsche Orland Park (Illinois) dealership where I took my vehicle for repair stated that the corrosion was due to leakage from the sunroof drain onto the unit. After the third failure of this unit due to corrosion, I contacted Porsche North America customer support. I was told that the corrosion of the terminals and subsequent failure of the Park Assist Control Unit was due to clogging of the sunroof water drain, causing “pooling and draining to places where it can cause damage.” Although other electronic components directly adjacent to this Unit have never had similar corrosion, there has never been evidence of water leakage inside the vehicle, and I regularly test the drains and have found no sign of blockages, I accepted Porsche North America’s explanation. They stated that “park[ing] a vehicle outside” or “driv[ing] where there are many trees” may exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately, subsequent concerns I raised regarding the tendency for these drains to clog at any time and Porsche’s decision to route a water drain in such close proximity to electronic vehicle safety systems were ignored.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
  • VIN: WP1AB2A58HL
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: It was noted there is fogging, spiderweb type cracks, and discoloration on the inside of each headlight lens. It was discovered through conversations at the dealership and online research that a chemical reaction between the factory lens coating and the gas emitted by the headlight bulbs was the likely cause. Lumen output has gradually decreased as the issue grows worse and both lenses become more opaque in appearance. The car is available for inspection. We are asking NHTSA to investigate this issue for the following reasons: 1) This is a growing safety issue as lumen output is steadily decreasing 2) This is unrelated to regular service/maintenance or any culpability on behalf of the owners 3) Absent replacement, this issue cannot be corrected by the owners 4) It has been reported to be a growing issue among numerous Porsche Macan owners. I asked Porsche if it was covered under the warranty, they stated it was not. They did examine the car. No warning messages.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-04
  • VIN: WP1AB2A59HL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Driving north on Interstate 95 near Stafford, VA and took exit for lunch. Restaurant was right at exit and we entered the parking area. Went to turn and the steering was frozen. Caution light said Power Steering Malfunction and steering could only be turned slightly with maximum effort by driver and passenger. Managed to move car to parking area. Subsequently towed to Porsche dealership in Arlington VA for repair. If this frozen steering had occurred moments earlier on I95, we would have likely crashed with the vehicle suddenly unable to be steered. We were terrified and believe our lives were in jeopardy. The dealer identified the problem as a broken/defective electronic rack & pinion steering unit. Vehicle has approximately 20,000 miles and is always garaged. The failed parts will be available at the dealer when replacement parts are received. There were no warning lights or indication of any problem prior to the event.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-11
  • VIN: WP1AG2A58HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: A recall was issued by Porsche on 2015-2017 Macan SUV's for front Airbag deployment issues. The recall code was AH02 safety campaign #17V133000. I contacted Porsche because my fault indicator for the front airbag lit up on my dash. I was informed that my VIN was not included. I asked if they could check if my airbag had an identification number and if it was in the batch under recall. They said that they could not look it up. My car was a custom build and may have come down the line at a different time than other stock builds which may have impacted the timing of the airbag install. Either way, my car was in the date range and has the airbag default indicator on therefore it should be covered. I had it tested for $265.00 and they covered themselves saying that it was an airbag control unit and seat pad Fault code B102204. What's the difference, the recall covers faulty airbags and mine is defective and they won't cover it. Please give me some guidance as to what my available options are at this point.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
  • VIN: WP1AG2A50HL
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Vehicle was driven to Porsche of Arlington (Virginia) for warranty service and a Virginia safety inspection. Service advisor reported that safety inspector informed him the vehicle passed inspection; however, it was noted there is fogging, spiderweb type cracks, and discoloration on the inside of each headlight lens. It was discovered through conversations at the dealership and online research that a chemical reaction between the factory lens coating and the gas emitted by the headlight bulbs was the likely cause. Lumen output has gradually decreased as the issue grows worse and both lenses become more opaque in appearance. Porsche of Arlington advised us the factory warranty had expired, as we had expected. They completed a thorough inspection of the headlight assemblies, took photos at the dealership, and further suggested we contact Porsche Cars North America to file a claim to ascertain whether a remedy could be made under 'good will' as this is undoubtedly a safety issue. Porsche Cars North America responded via e-mail and advised us that 'customer safety and satisfaction is our top priority.' They assigned a case number and informed us we would be hearing from a representative for additional information. After several weeks of phone calls, Porsche Cars North America determined that no 'good will' would be provided as this issue involves/is related to the vehicle's glass/lens and therefore excluded from any adjustments or consideration from Porsche Cars North America. We are asking NHTSA to investigate this issue for the following reasons: 1) This is a growing safety issue as lumen output is steadily decreasing 2) This is unrelated to regular service/maintenance or any culpability on behalf of the owners 3) Absent replacement, this issue cannot be corrected by the owners 4) It has been reported to be a growing issue among numerous Porsche Macan owners 5) We have exhausted our options with the dealership and Porsche Cars North America

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-07
  • VIN: WP1AB2A53HL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The 2017 Porsche Macan S is unsafe to drive on the road as the vehicle goes into jerking mode while driving without any warning, the safety light came on as transmission fault. I took the vehicle to River Oaks Porsche, and they diagnosed the issue as transmission problem common with the Macan brand and the Cayenne brand, I then informed the manufacturer, and I was informed that since the vehicle had not been recalled there was nothing they could do with the defect. Since the dealership acknowledged that the issue was common with these brands, I believed that these vehicles should have been recalled for public safety.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
  • VIN: WP1AA2A50HL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Did an appointment weeks in advanced in Porsche McDaniels dealership in Columbia South Carolina so they can fix the pending recall about the air bag - mat sensor. They didn’t provide the service, pushing me to reschedule for more weeks. They knew I lived in a city far from the dealership… this is a serious recall and I don’t see Porsche is serious or care about it. I believe they are expecting for the recall campaign expiration date.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-14
  • VIN: WP1AB2A57HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I fear a possible non-detection of front passenger. The “Airbag warning lamp” or “Passenger Airbag OFF” lamp is activated. I fear the front passenger airbag may not deploy in a type of a crash in which it is designed to deploy. My VIN is not falling under the AMA2 Recall campaign even though I feel it should be.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-27
  • VIN: WP1AG2A53HL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine oil started leaking on the timing case over bolts. The current mileage is 20500. This happened right after the regular 40,000 mile maintenance. The dealership said it's out of warranty but on a bit of research the aluminum bolts seem to break easily with a lot of similar cases.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-02
  • VIN: WP1AA2A54HL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: the vehicle is hard to steer, which includes an intermittent manual to power feel in the steering so that pulling hard on the steering causes the vehicle to veer in direction of the steer. While pulling hard, the steering will suddenly feel "powered" but then immediately return to feeling manual. This puts anyone at risk in the vehicle, as it is dangerous to make turns. An appointment for diagnosis at the dealer was scheduled and was charged $185. the dealer says that the U-joint in the intermediate drive shaft is rusty and the issue is mechanical but with no clear answer as to why the problem is intermittent, in any speed, temperature, and direction. No warning/messages, the issue just appeared and got worse.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01
  • VIN: WP1AB2A56HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Passenger Airbag Fault light is on and has been steadily on for 1 month. Was told my vehicle is not covered by the recall even though it is the same exact part "Passenger seat occupancy detection seat foam mat faulty, replace seat occupancy sensor." that requires repair. The repair cost is almost $4000 including waiting up to 4 weeks for the parts to come in. The maker is not offering a loaner vehicle and was advised I could drive the vehicle as is. It is unsafe to drive around with a faulty safety system especially since i commute with passengers.
