The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (often abbreviated as the Prius PHV and known as the Prius Prime in North America, South Korea, and New Zealand) is a plug-in hybrid liftback manufactured by Toyota. The first-generation model was produced from 2012 to 2016. The second-generation model has been produced since 2016. Production of the third-generation model began in 2023.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid was the second most sold plug-in electric car in 2012, and became third-best all-time in December 2014. As sales declined after the end of its production, the Prius PHV fell to fifth place in the global ranking by November 2015, after being surpassed by both the Tesla Model S and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. As of December 2017, sales were led by North America with 66,800 units, followed by Japan with 48,800, and the European market with 13,100 units. The U.S. was the leading country market with 65,703 units sold by 2017. As of December 2019, cumulative global sales of both Prius plug-in generations totaled 209,000 units.

Concept and demonstration models

The Prius Plug-In Hybrid Concept was exhibited at the September 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the October 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, and the December 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicle was based on the third-generation Toyota Prius (model XW30) but outfitted with 5.2 kWh lithium-ion batteries. The selected battery capacity is the minimum required for a vehicle to be eligible for the U.S. federal tax credit of US$2,500, which under the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 is applicable to the first 200,000 plug-ins sold by an automaker.

After displaying the concept version in these three shows, a global demonstration program involving 600 pre-production test cars began in late 2009 and took place in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand and the United States. The demonstration vehicles were made available for lease to fleet and government customers, of which, 230 were delivered in Japan beginning in late December 2009, 125 in the U.S. by early 2010, and 200 in Europe in spring 2010. All program vehicles were equipped with data tracking devices to allow Toyota to monitor the car's usage for further development of the plug-in hybrid system.

The pre-production Prius Plug-in used three different batteries: two added batteries to provide all-electric drive and the standard hybrid battery which engages when the first two are depleted, allowing the car to operate like a regular hybrid Prius. According to Toyota, when the vehicle started, it operates in all-electric mode, drawing electrical power directly from the first battery pack. When the first battery was depleted, it disconnected from the circuit and the second pack engaged. When the second pack was depleted, it disconnected from the circuit and the vehicle defaulted to conventional hybrid mode, using the main battery as the sole electrical power source. Pack one and pack two would not reengage with the circuit until the vehicle was plugged in and charged.

According to Toyota, the demonstrator was rated at 1.76 L/100 km (134 mpg‑US; 161 mpg‑imp) on the Japanese JC08 cycle with a combined efficiency based on 43.6% of driving in EV mode, and CO2 emissions of 41 g/km. Fuel efficiency operating as a gasoline-electric hybrid, like the regular Prius, is 3.3 L/100 km (72 mpg‑US; 86 mpg‑imp) with CO2 emissions of 76 g/km.

Common 2022 Toyota Prius prime problems

The Toyota Prius Prime 2022 has been reported to have some common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the main issues is related to the hybrid propulsion system. According to the recall information, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) software may falsely detect an error and shut down the hybrid system, causing a loss of drive power. This issue affects certain 2022 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles, and Toyota will update the ECU software free of charge to fix the problem.

Another problem reported is related to the service brakes. The brake booster pump may fail, causing a deactivation of the Vehicle Stability Control system and a loss of braking assist. This issue affects certain 2019 Lexus LS500, LC500, ES300h, UX250h, LS500h, Toyota Prius, RAV4 HV, 2019-2020 Toyota Prius Prime, and 2020 Corolla HV vehicles. Toyota will inspect and, if necessary, replace the brake booster pump free of charge to fix the problem.

It is important to note that these issues have been identified by Toyota and are being addressed through recalls and repairs. If you own a 2022 Toyota Prius Prime, it is recommended to check if your vehicle is affected by these recalls and to have the necessary repairs done as soon as possible to ensure your safety and the proper functioning of your vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-30
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTDKAMFP7N3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Prior to making a turn into a residential driveway, the vehicle throttled up and there was no response from the vehicle when the brakes were applied. The vehicle would not stop in motion. Based on my experience of this event, it is my firm belief that the vehicle shut down completely as a result to correct the throttle event, and the vehicle was not responsive to application of brake to bring the car to a stop. The safety and the safety of other was put at risk because the car would not come to a stop and the vehicle did not respond. If there would have been someone in the driveway, or this would have occurred on roadway, this would have caused catastrophic property damage, injury or death. The problem was not reproduced or confirmed by a dealer through a third party due to the fact that the independent inspection addressed only the hardware components of the vehicle and dismissed any examination of the ECU software or other software components in the vehicle. Manufacturer's reasoning was due to the fact that this was low impact (pulling into driveway) that the data recorder did not catch any relevant data. However, if the airbags would have deployed, sufficient data collected. This incident occurred on 5/30 at 206 miles in the same location where, (29) days prior to this event, I had pulled in / out of this same driveway under various conditions (other vehicles in driveway, empty driveway, etc) with no issue or incident. The engine throttled up prior to approaching my turn into the driveway, and the vehicle would not respond to the brakes. It was as if the vehicle shut down completely My new vehicle has been on order since October 2021, and was finally delivered to the dealership on 4/29/2022, which was six months later post to Toyota's active recall 21TB07/21TA07 issued for an identified Engine Control Unit (ECU) software in which the vehicle may falsely detect an error, shut down the hybrid system, causing a loss of drive power.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-28
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTDKAMFP5N3
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On June 28, 2022 at around 20:10 PM, while on vacation at a resort in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec, Canada, I went down to charge the car at the only charging station at the resort. It was being used, so I returned to our cabin in the D building. As I approached the building, I pulled up to clear a car so that I could park beside it. I slowed and before I could put the car in reverse, the car rolled forward a few inches. My foot was already on the brake so I pressed it harder. But the car continued to roll forward. It wouldn’t stop. When it finally came to a stop on the edge of a rock wall, it slowly rolled off the edge and dropped about 20 feet and rolled over coming to rest upright. I have photos and a video of the location and aftermath. The consumer stated she opened up an investigation with Toyota.

Negative 2022 Toyota Prius prime car reviews

  1. Cletus Champlin 2024-10-23

I recently purchased my third Prius, the 2021 plug-in model. While my previous two hybrids were great and the service was excellent, I have to admit that I'm not entirely satisfied with this latest purchase. Unfortunately, I didn't receive all the necessary operating information when I bought the car, which made it difficult for me to understand and program the controls and settings. The placement of the controls is also quite inconvenient and even dangerous, as one must look down towards the floor to determine which button is which. The instruction manual is quite lengthy, with 650 pages of confusing acronyms and symbols. However, the local service department is currently working to sort it out. I've been informed that this model has 27 computers, which may be a bit excessive. Despite these challenges, I'm confident that with some patience and assistance, I'll be able to fully enjoy my new car. I would also like to advise others to be aware of the federal tax rebate, which is currently around $2500, rather than the $7500 that some may have been led to believe.

  2. Maxime Hessel 2024-06-25

I recently purchased a hybrid Toyota 2022 Prius Prime and have been enjoying driving it. However, I have found that using their tire repair kit, which includes a pump and a small bottle of liquid (300 mL?), can be quite expensive. After using the liquid to fix a flat tire, it is necessary to replace the tire (which cost me $190 at the Toyota dealer). Additionally, refilling the small bottle of liquid costs $100. Therefore, I would advise anyone considering purchasing a car without a spare tire to carefully consider the cost of using a repair kit and to inquire about these costs with the dealer.

  3. Arno McCullough 2024-04-04

I recently purchased a Prius Prime, my first hybrid or EV. Initially, I found the car to be more complicated than I expected, but with some guidance, I was able to get the hang of it. The owner's manual was a bit difficult to navigate, but with some patience, I was able to learn how to operate the many functions of the car. Proper maintenance of a hybrid car requires a bit more attention than a traditional gasoline-powered car, but it's worth it for the added benefits. While an EV may be more advantageous for local driving, a hybrid is a must for road trips when overnight charging stations may not be available. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and have found the car to be a great fit for my needs.

  4. Armando Fahey 2024-02-03

The 21 Prius Prime is a comfortable and roomy car, but it has some major drawbacks that should be considered before making a purchase. The price ranges from $28-36k and the fuel mileage is not much better than a plain-jane hybrid that costs thousands less. However, the federal rebate can help offset the cost. The EV-only options are nice, but they come at a premium that may not be worth it. When fully charged, the ride is brisk, responsive, and agile, providing a pleasant driving experience. However, wind and engine noise can be pronounced and may detract from the overall experience. The hatch/boot space is extremely small, limiting the amount of luggage or cargo that can be carried. Additionally, there is no rear window wiper, which can be more annoying than it seems at first glance. Despite these concerns, the LE version (with no adjustable seats, small infotainment, and cloth seats) used and with low miles may be the best option for those looking to save money. A used 20/21 car with a few thousand miles for 18K, with EV-only options, might be the best option if you must have a Prius over an Ionic. Overall, it is important to carefully consider the drawbacks before making a purchase.

  5. Merle Kemmer 2024-01-17

If fuel mileage is a top priority for you, then this vehicle is definitely worth considering. However, if fuel economy is not a major concern, this car may not be the best option. The driving experience can be unpleasant and there is a high level of interior noise at highway speeds. Additionally, the luggage space is compromised by the large battery that only provides about a 25 mile range. Lastly, the infotainment system could be improved.

Positive 2022 Toyota Prius prime car reviews

  1. Myron Haley 2025-01-06

I recently had to replace my 2011 CT200h (which was essentially a Prius in fancy clothes) after it was totaled. Luckily, I stumbled upon an opportunity to purchase a Prime Limited (which had been ordered but the buyer backed out) and I am so glad I did! While I do miss the styling of the Lexus, the technology, efficiency, and comfort of the PP are much better. While it may not win any road races, it is a great vehicle for normal driving. The only downsides are that it can be a bit noisy on the highway or poor road surfaces, and the large screen can cause some glare. However, the 100MPG I'm getting (factoring in electric costs) along with the nice 10 speaker stereo, radar cruise, auto wipes/highbeams, heated seats/wheel, nice visibility, and silent 30 miles on electricity more than make up for it. My commute is 22 miles each way and I charge at home and work. On my last tank, I saw well over 1,200 miles, and that was only because I had to take a road trip. Is the limited worth it? I think so. It has lots of safety features, parking sonar, cross traffic, bigger speakers/sub, and more. While I most likely will never use the self-parking feature (if you can't park this little car, then you should not be on the road in my opinion), I still think it's a great value. With new cars averaging 42k, this little guy is a steal at $34,500 with a $4,500 federal tax credit. I got $16k for the CT due to the crazy market, so out the door, I got a brand new limited for $15k. What a deal!

  2. Warren Gottlieb 2024-11-26

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Prius Prime. Recently, we bought two of them for our sons to use as commuter cars for university and work. We were lucky to find one LE and one limited, but it was quite a challenge as they are still in high demand. We ended up purchasing one in New Jersey and the other in North Carolina since prices in Florida were just too high. After driving both cars, I have to say I'm super impressed! They have great pick up on the highway and are super responsive in the city. Plus, they are packed with technology and have amazing mileage. It's been three months since the first gas fill up and they mostly run on electric. I couldn't recommend these cars enough! By the way, I agree that the xle trim is enough. Stay safe out there!!!

  3. Buck Tremblay 2024-11-12

I love the Prius Prime! It's great to hear that you have a 2022 model. I understand that the dashboard in the 2024 model is better suited for older drivers like us. It's wonderful to drive - so smooth and quiet!

  4. Zander Watsica 2024-09-25

Exceptional gas mileage, rapid charge, and beautiful interior! Love this car!

  5. Keon Schultz 2024-08-13

We really enjoyed our driving experience with the Prius Prime! The reliability of a Prius is outstanding, which is why this is our fifth one. Need I say more?
