2010 Honda Element problems

The Honda Element is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Honda and marketed in North America over a single generation for model years 2003–2011 — and noted for its boxy exterior styling with bi-parting side doors and its boxy, flexible interior layout.

Manufactured in East Liberty, Ohio, the Element used a modified second generation CR-V platform with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. By late 2010, shortly before its discontinuation, production had totaled approximately 325,000.

Overview

The Element followed a concept called Model X which was developed by a core group of Honda R&D engineers in 1998 and debuted at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Model X was designed as an activity-oriented vehicle combining features of a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle, and its styling was inspired by a lifeguard station, its roofline arched to evoke the curve of a surfboard.

Noted for its four bi-parting side doors that open to provide a clear aperature of 55.5 inches, the structure of the Element eliminates the B-pillars by reinforcing and enlarging the side sills, floor and roof cross members, and providing five bulkheads per side. The rear door structure have a reinforced vertical beam and, when closed, connect to the body side sill via a hook and catch system, effectively creating a B-pillar. The rear-hinged rear side doors can open only after the forward doors.

The production Element debuted at the 2002 New York International Auto Show with an interior featuring TPO-coated textured urethane flooring; stain-resistant fabric; individually reclining and removable rear seats that stow.

The four-cylinder i-VTEC 2.4 Litre K Engine produced 166 hp (124 kW) at 5800 rpm and 162 lb⋅ft (220 N⋅m) of torque at 4000 rpm for 2007-2011 model years and 160 hp (119 kW) at 5500 rpm and 160 lb⋅ft (217 N⋅m) of torque at 4500 rpm in 2003-2006 model years. Drive is either front-wheel drive or optionally, all wheel drive — via a hydraulically actuated on demand system that engages with front wheel slippage, marketed as "Real Time 4WD". The Element has a towing capacity of 680 kg, or 1500 lbs and a gross weight of 4450 lbs (2018 kg).

In 2007, the Element won the Dogcars.com "Dog Car of the Year" award because of its "versatile cargo space, easy-clean flooring, crate-friendly rear design and optional 4 wheel drive." and in 2010 it won the "Small SUV" category as a "Top Safety Pick" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Annual Awards.

With projected first year sales of 50,000, the Element sold 67,478 units in 2003 in the US. In 2010, just over 14,000 were sold. According to a 2003 survey, 67% of buyers were over 35, 38% were women, and the median age was 42.

Common 2010 Honda Element problems

The Honda Element, produced between 2003 and 2011, is known for its practicality and reliability. However, certain model years have specific issues that potential buyers should be aware of.

  • 2003 and 2004 Honda Element: These model years had the most problems reported, including engine and transmission issues that became less common in later years. Additionally, there were problems with the interior and exterior of the car.
  • 2007 Honda Element: The most common issue with this model year was the gauge needles falling off, which could be expensive to repair and dangerous if left alone. This problem was reported more frequently than any other issue with the 2007 Element.
  • 2008 Honda Element: This model year had many complaints about premature wear on the brakes. While it is possible to find a reliable 2008 model, this is considered one of the Honda Element years to avoid due to the quality of the model years that followed it.
  • 2003 and 2004 Honda Element: The first two model years had the most problems reported, with issues such as the key not fitting into the door locks or ignition, engine and transmission problems, and issues with the windows and interior build.

Common problems across all model years include:

  • Door Lock Issues: Some owners have reported that the door lock may be sticky and not work due to worn door lock tumblers.
  • SRS Light: The SRS light may come on due to a faulty wire harness for seat belts.
  • Wobbly Driveshaft: Some Honda Elements have experienced wobbly driveshaft issues, which can be caused by a worn-out driveshaft or a problem with the CV joint.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks from the VTC solenoid have been reported in some Honda Elements. The VTC solenoid is a part of the engine's variable valve timing system, and a leak can cause a loss of power and reduced fuel efficiency.
  • Faulty Ignition Switch: Some owners have experienced troubles with a faulty ignition switch, which can cause the car to stall or not start at all.
  • Airbag Fault: An airbag fault has been a persistent issue with the Honda Element, with several recalls over the years to fix the faulty inflator bags.

While no year of the Element had major problems with its reliability and build quality, some model years had more issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider the model year's overall reliability when purchasing a used Honda Element.

Do Honda Elements have issues?

If you want to keep driving your Honda Element for a long time, you'll have to resolve any issues as soon as they pop up. Engine oil leaks, differential fluid breakdowns, and faulty door locks can all interfere with your Element's driveability, even with its high reliability rating.

How many miles will a 2010 Honda Element last?

Many owners on here with 300,000+ miles and some with 500,000 plus. We are all biased but an argument could me made that this is one of the most reliable cars Honda has made. WestCoastE said: Like any car, quite a long time if maintained well.

Is Honda Element a reliable car?

The Honda Element is a reliable vehicle, but it's not without issues. Here are some of them: Engine oil leaks: Elements of model 2003-2011 suffered from engine oil leaks due to faulty oil pressure sensors. This problem is usually indicated with the illumination of the check engine light.

Why did Honda quit making the Honda Element?

Honda Motors discontinued production of the Element because the model's gas mileage was too low, holding Honda's overall fleet averages above the regulatory targets imposed by U.S. Department of Transportation on manufacturers' Corporate Average Fuel Economy.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-23
  • VIN: 5J6YH2H78AL
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: My name is [XXX] and I am the owner of this vehicle. On [XXX] 2024, my daughter was driving this vehicle at approximately 30 miles per hour when the drivers side rear trailing arm separated from the frame and caused the tire/wheel to destabilize and hung crooked from the side of the rear of the vehicle. It appears that the frame around the trailing arm mount rusted completely away. My daughter lost control and luckily was able to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road. Evidently, there is a recall from Honda in Canada for this issue, but not in the U.S. This is very dangerous and my daughter is very lucky that the catastrophic failure didn't happen when she was on the highway. (this has happened many times over the past half year or so & occasionally before that) this is already a recall for vehicles of my year or element, but for some reason mine wasn't included & it definitely should have been! nhtsa campaign id: 10v361000

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-07
  • VIN: 5J6YH1H79AL
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I've been informed by my mechanic of excessive rust on the rear suspension. The car will not pass state inspection due to safety issues related to this. An appointment has been made with the Honda dealership to confirm. Honda has put out a recall/buy back for the same issue on the Element and the CRV in Canada, where there are areas of high salt usage. Honda has done the same for the CRV in northern 'high salt use' states but not yet the Element. I first heard knocking in the rear about 6 months ago but have generally been ignoring it. After an inspection following an unrelated issue is when I was alerted that the knocking was due to this. These are the details for the Canada recall: Honda is recalling all 2003-2011 Element SUVs, warning of rusting rear frames that could result in the complete separation of the rear trailing arm. According to Transport Canada, this recall applies to vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in areas of heavy road salt usage. This includes, but is not limited to Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Signs of a worn rear trailing arm include difficulty to maintain a straight line, thudding noises coming from the rear and the appearance of the vehicle having been lifted. In a worst case scenario, the vehicle may lose control. Transport Canada elaborates that owners will be notified by mail to send their vehicle to dealers, who will inspect the vehicle for corrosion in the rear trailing arm front mount bolts. If passed, corrosion protection and support braces will be installed. If failed, Honda will offer to repurchase the vehicle. However, secondary inspections and body shop repairs are also possible. For more information on recall number 2021024, visit Transport Canada.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-10
  • VIN: 5J6YH2H78AL
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Drivers side rear trailing arm separated from chassis. This occurred while backing out of a parking spot causing the left rear wheel to turn outward. When this happened I had to turn the steering wheel left to keep vehicle going straight forward and this was at an idling speed. we had just a few days prior returned from an 1800 mile trip. Had this occurred at interstate speeds it most likely would have been catastrophic resulting in serious perhaps fatal consequences. The otherwise great vehicle is not repairable according to the diagnoses from my Honda dealer.

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-21
  • VIN: 5J6YH2H72AL

  • Summary: MY CAR HAS AN ACTIVE RECALL FOR A TRAILER WIRING HARNESS. I HAVE HAD THE HARNESS INSPECTED BY MY DEALER FOUR TIMES, AND THEY CLAIM IT IS NOT A FACTORY-INSTALLED HARNESS, DESPITE IT BEING IN YOUR DATABASE. THE HARNESS WAS ON THE CAR WHEN I PURCHASED IT. I CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY IT IS DIFFERENT THAN THE RECALLED WIRING HARNESS. I HAD A TRAILER HITCH ADDED TO MY VEHICLE SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE, BUT THE SHOP DID NOT ADD A WIRING HARNESS BECAUSE ONE WAS ALREADY ON THE CAR. HOWEVER, I USE THE HITCH ONLY TO ATTACH A BIKE RACK. I HAVE NEVER HAULED A TRAILER WITH THIS VEHICLE, AND FEEL THERE IS THEREFORE NO SAFETY HAZARD. PLEASE REMOVE MY VEHICLE FROM YOUR RECALL RECORDS. THE RECALLED WIRING HARNESS APPARENTLY WAS NEVER INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-02-19
  • VIN: 5J6YH2H72AL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: BRAKES VERY SPONGY, GOING ALMOST DOWN TO FLOOR, CAUSING A DANGEROUS INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE ON THE HIGHWAY MY MECHANIC BLED THE SYSTEM SEVERAL TIMES TO NO AVAIL. THEN CHANGED THE MASTER CYLINDER. STILL SPONGY, THEN THE MECHANIC CHECKED FOR HONDA SERVICE BULLETINS REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. HE FOUND A SERVICE BULLETIN THAT ADDRESSES A SIMILAR PROBLEM ON 2007-2008 ELEMENTS (HTTPS://WWW.SKIDMORE.EDU/~PDWYER/E/FILES/CAMPAIGN_AND_RECALL_BULLETINS/A10-017.PDF). THERE IS ALSO A NHTSA RECALL REGARDING THIS PROBLEM (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V098000 ). I THINK THE PROBLEM WITH MY 2010 HONDA ELEMENT MAY BE SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE 2007-2008 YEAR MODELS AND REQUIRE A SIMILAR RECALL AND FIX. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BECAUSE THE LOSS OF BRAKING POWER ABILITY PUT MYSELF AND FAMILY IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2001-2007 Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2001-2004 Honda Civic GX, 2003-2005 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2002-2006 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, 2006 Ridgeline, 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2003-2006 Acura MDX, and 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL vehicles. • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall began on September 20, 2012. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009.

Negative 2010 Honda Element car reviews

  1. Noah VonRueden 2024-09-23

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my new Honda Element that I purchased in May. Unfortunately, it has been in the shop twice now, and this time it has been over a week. I've been getting the response that the techs are still looking at it, which has been frustrating. The car won't run if it's not started daily, and this has left me stuck in Washington DC and three additional times at home. I was disappointed that Honda wouldn't provide a rental car while they try to figure out the issue. On the other hand, I also purchased a Honda Civic SI 2010 at the same time, and so far, I haven't had any issues with it. Overall, it's been a bit of a bummer, but I'm hopeful that the issue with my Element will be resolved soon.

  2. Seth Fay 2024-07-21

This vehicle is just the right size for my needs. I even removed the back seats and use it as a van. Although I have some disappointments, such as the stereo system being just okay at best, and the front seats not being able to go all the way forward when in the forward position, I still find it to be a great car overall. I do wish that the rust proofing found under the fender wells had been sprayed everywhere on the undercarriage, as it can be deceiving to a buyer to think that they have rustproofing there. Additionally, I believe that even a weekend car painter knows that all the door jambs should be painted the same as the rest of the vehicle. While my Element has some parts of the jambs painted the same as what you find under the hood, the rest is not. However, I still find this car to be a great standard for a car.

Positive 2010 Honda Element car reviews

I absolutely adore my '09 Honda Element EX! It has been with me since the day I drove it out of the showroom and I can confidently say that it is the only car I would ever buy again. It has been my trusty companion through thick and thin, and I have never had any major issues with it. With 266,000 miles on the clock, it has only needed regular oil changes, a new air filter, and a front axle replacement. I have always driven it hard and fast, but it has never let me down. The Element is a beast in the snow and the traction control has saved me from accidents on more than one occasion. I am so grateful for this car and I hope it lasts forever! Even now, at 267k miles, it's still going strong. I recently gifted it to a high school graduate who takes great care of it and I still get to see it often since he lives just a few houses down from me.

I have been driving for 64 years and have owned a wide range of cars, from a Peugeot 203 to a Lexus LS 460, including all the 'luxury' models from Mercedes, BMW and Infinity. However, none of them have been able to compete with this little gem in terms of repair and service costs, not to mention reliability.

  3. Ezekiel Beier 2024-11-04

Congratulations on your recent purchase! It's great to hear that you've already put 1K miles on your new car and that you find it to be an excellent and safe vehicle. While the fuel efficiency may not be what you were hoping for, it's good to know that you're still averaging 20 miles per gallon. It's understandable that you may have some concerns about the interior quality, especially given the price point of $24K. It's worth noting that some features, such as iPod controls and a security system, are not included as standard and must be added as accessories. However, we appreciate your feedback and will certainly take it into consideration. We're sorry to hear about the issues with the paint and chips, and we will do our best to address these concerns. Thank you for choosing Honda and we hope you continue to enjoy your new car!

  4. Micah Bosco 2024-09-26

I'm so glad to hear that you finally bought a new vehicle this summer! From what you've said, it sounds like you made a great choice. The utility, handling, and looks are all fantastic, and it's great to hear that you're enjoying the stereo and getting good gas mileage. It's a shame that the back seat can be a bit uncomfortable, but it's good to know that there's plenty of room back there. It sounds like you're really happy with your purchase, and I hope you continue to enjoy it for a long time to come!

  5. Jacinto Bosco 2024-09-09

I recently upgraded my car from an 03 Element to a 2010 model. I was thrilled to find one with a manual transmission, which is important to me. After some persistence with the salesman, we were able to locate a dealer trade just 60 miles away. Like my previous Element, this car is incredibly practical and reliable. In fact, over the course of 102k miles, I only had to replace the battery and tires, and it never once left me stranded. I use it for all sorts of tasks, and it always performs well. Overall, I'm very happy with my Element!
