2005 Honda Element problems

The Honda Element is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Honda and marketed in North America over a single generation for model years 2003–2011 — and noted for its boxy exterior styling with bi-parting side doors and its boxy, flexible interior layout.

Manufactured in East Liberty, Ohio, the Element used a modified second generation CR-V platform with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. By late 2010, shortly before its discontinuation, production had totaled approximately 325,000.

Overview

The Element followed a concept called Model X which was developed by a core group of Honda R&D engineers in 1998 and debuted at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Model X was designed as an activity-oriented vehicle combining features of a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle, and its styling was inspired by a lifeguard station, its roofline arched to evoke the curve of a surfboard.

Noted for its four bi-parting side doors that open to provide a clear aperature of 55.5 inches, the structure of the Element eliminates the B-pillars by reinforcing and enlarging the side sills, floor and roof cross members, and providing five bulkheads per side. The rear door structure have a reinforced vertical beam and, when closed, connect to the body side sill via a hook and catch system, effectively creating a B-pillar. The rear-hinged rear side doors can open only after the forward doors.

The production Element debuted at the 2002 New York International Auto Show with an interior featuring TPO-coated textured urethane flooring; stain-resistant fabric; individually reclining and removable rear seats that stow.

The four-cylinder i-VTEC 2.4 Litre K Engine produced 166 hp (124 kW) at 5800 rpm and 162 lb⋅ft (220 N⋅m) of torque at 4000 rpm for 2007-2011 model years and 160 hp (119 kW) at 5500 rpm and 160 lb⋅ft (217 N⋅m) of torque at 4500 rpm in 2003-2006 model years. Drive is either front-wheel drive or optionally, all wheel drive — via a hydraulically actuated on demand system that engages with front wheel slippage, marketed as "Real Time 4WD". The Element has a towing capacity of 680 kg, or 1500 lbs and a gross weight of 4450 lbs (2018 kg).

In 2007, the Element won the Dogcars.com "Dog Car of the Year" award because of its "versatile cargo space, easy-clean flooring, crate-friendly rear design and optional 4 wheel drive." and in 2010 it won the "Small SUV" category as a "Top Safety Pick" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Annual Awards.

With projected first year sales of 50,000, the Element sold 67,478 units in 2003 in the US. In 2010, just over 14,000 were sold. According to a 2003 survey, 67% of buyers were over 35, 38% were women, and the median age was 42.

Common 2005 Honda Element problems

The Honda Element, produced from 2003 to 2011, is known for its reliability and practicality. However, like any vehicle, it has faced several common problems across its model years. This article will discuss these issues, focusing on the 2005 model year, which is considered a safer year to buy used, according to CoPilot.

  • Door Lock May be Sticky and Not Work Due to Worn Door Lock Tumblers: This issue is common in many Honda Element models, including the 2005 model. The door lock tumblers may wear out over time, causing the door lock to become sticky or not work at all. This problem can be solved by replacing the faulty door lock tumblers.
  • SRS Light Due to Faulty Wire Harness for Seat Belts: Some Honda Element owners, including those with 2005 models, have reported that the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) light comes on due to a faulty wire harness for the seat belts. This problem can be resolved by repairing or replacing the faulty wire harness.
  • Engine Oil Leaks: A common problem in some 2003 to 2011 Honda Elements is an engine that leaks oil due to faulty oil pressure sensors. This issue is usually accompanied by an illuminated check engine light. If you encounter this issue, mechanics may either inspect the sensor and ensure it’s properly sealed or replace the part.
  • Groaning Noises from the Rear Differential: Several owners of 2003-2010 Honda Element models have complained about groaning noises coming from their rear differential whenever they make turns. Upon investigation, they traced the issue to a differential fluid breakdown. Owners had to have their rear differential serviced to solve the problem.
  • Maladjusted Rear Tailgate: Many 2003-2010 Honda Elements have experienced issues with their rear hatch light turning on unexpectedly due to a maladjusted rear tailgate. Mechanics had to adjust the tailgate of the affected units to solve the issue.
  • Faulty Door Lock Tumblers: Many 2003-2008 Honda Elements have experienced problems with malfunctioning door locks due to faulty door lock tumblers. To solve the issue, the door lock assemblies on the affected units had to be removed to replace the faulty tumblers.
  • Key Won’t Go in the Door Lock: Issues involving door locks seem to top the list of 2003 Honda Element common problems. Several owners have reported having difficulties unlocking their doors because their key won’t go in. The problem usually starts when the remote stopped working. Some drivers had to dismantle their driver-side door to retrieve their key that got stuck in the door lock.

These common problems, while not exclusive to the 2005 Honda Element, are essential for potential buyers to be aware of when considering purchasing a used Honda Element. Regular maintenance and addressing issues as they arise can help ensure a reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

  • Summary: The left rear control arm pulled out of the subframe and floor panel and hit the pavement facing forward, the direction in which the car was moving. The left rear tire pulled out and away from the vehicle, and the car lurched downward. There were sparks. I was pulling away from a gas pump at a service station. I stopped the car immediately and had it towed to a mechanic. There was no warning. There were no unusual sounds or movements prior to the incident. Approximately 100 miles before the incident, a licensed mechanic did a safety inspection and test drove the vehicle prior to doing maintenance on other parts of the car. Two different mechanics inspected the vehicle and determined it was unsafe to repair it. The control arm broke off due to excessive rust and corrosion, which was not visible during the safety inspection, because the area was visually blocked by a strut.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-09
  • VIN: 5J6YH28635L
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I have a 2005 Honda Element, undercarriage and suspension components have severe rust. I tried to get an inspection from Virginia and it failed immediately due to the rust. The mechanic lowered the vehicle as quickly as he could because of it falling off the lift. ultimately he told it is unsafe to drive. After doing some research I found out that Honda Canada has done a recall on Honda elements from 2003-2010 due to this common issue and here is what they wrote. Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear frame could rust. In extreme cases, this could result in a rear trailing arm separating from the vehicle. This recall applies to vehicles originally sold or currently registered in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador). Safety Risk: A rear trailing arm that separates could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Honda will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the rear trailing arm front mount bolts. If the vehicle passes the inspection, the dealer will apply corrosion protection and install support braces. Honda will offer to repurchase vehicles that do not pass the inspection. In the event the repurchase is declined by an owner, a secondary inspection and body shop repair method may be possible.

Negative 2005 Honda Element car reviews

  1. Leon Dibbert 2024-11-09

The Element's power may not be the strongest for an SUV, and unfortunately the LX model does not come with ABS. Additionally, some people may find the suicide doors to be a bit of a hassle, especially in a carpool situation where the front seat passenger needs to unbuckle and open the door to let someone in the back. However, there are still many great features to appreciate in the Element.

  2. Turner Oberbrunner 2024-10-18

So far it has been great! I love the spaciousness and easy access from both sides and the rear. The only downside is having to open the front doors to open the other doors. Overall, I think Honda builds excellent cars. Best regards, Bill

  3. Dillan Satterfield 2024-10-12

I bought my E as a concession to my then partner. I was pleasantly surprised at what it could do off the beaten path. However, I was disappointed in its lack of power, towing ability, and traction 'out of the box'.

  4. Lorenz Haag 2024-08-28

Although the car is fun to drive, the ride can be choppy. However, the finish could be improved, particularly in comparison to other Honda models. For example, the rough plastic edge under the steering wheel can be bothersome to some drivers. Additionally, the plastic panels appear to be made of weaker and thinner materials. Overall, the car has great potential for improvement in terms of its finish and materials.

  5. Brian Lakin 2024-03-01

I noticed that the gas mileage on my vehicle is not as good as I expected. Despite driving an equal mix of city and highway miles, I only average around 200 miles per tankful. I understand that the stated MPG may not always be accurate, but I was hoping for better performance. I have been driving for over 25 years and I am confident that my driving habits are not the cause of the poor gas mileage. I read in Consumer Report Oct. 05 that one writer reported getting 14 MPG with their Element. I have been a loyal Honda driver since '92, but I have noticed a decline in quality. Although I am disappointed, I appreciate your attention to this matter. Thank you for your time.

Positive 2005 Honda Element car reviews

  1. Obie Carroll 2025-01-05

This vehicle may not be suitable for everyone, but it could be a great option if you require ample cargo space in a compact package, prioritize easy maintenance, don't prioritize speed (as acceleration is only fair and RPMs run pretty high even at 65 mph), frequently drive on snowy roads, appreciate a multitude of interior storage compartments, and prefer to save money by sleeping in your car rather than a hotel room.

  2. Jamison Waters 2024-11-25

I really enjoy this trucklet! It's spacious and comfortable, especially for a big guy like me. I was thrilled to find a manual transmission option, and the AWD is fantastic. There's even enough room for my dog in the back seat! I love listening to XM radio while driving, and it's super easy to keep the interior clean. I added a new chrome grill to improve the look of the front, and it's perfect for tailgating. You should definitely check out this special SUV!

  3. Rudolph Bins 2024-11-23

This SUV is fantastic! It's so much fun to drive and, as you'd expect from Honda, it's incredibly reliable. The interior space is great and it's really easy to drive. I'm absolutely thrilled with my purchase - I sold my Ford Expedition and I'm so glad I chose a Honda instead.

  4. Dell Kuhn 2024-11-22

As a sales representative for a map company, I absolutely love using my Element to haul my products and service my route. The cargo space and headroom are fantastic, especially for someone like me who is 6'5

  5. Darwin Schuppe 2024-11-02

The Element is such a blast to drive that, for the first time ever, I don't mind driving the least attractive car on the road. I actually find it quite charming! Additionally, the car has a sturdy feel to it. When you shut the rear doors, it emits a sound that suggests a well-crafted, weighty vehicle, not a flimsy, hastily assembled one. I can't wait to test out the AWD in the snow this winter.
