2006 Honda Element problems
The Honda Element is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Honda and marketed in North America over a single generation for model years 2003–2011 — and noted for its boxy exterior styling with bi-parting side doors and its boxy, flexible interior layout.
Manufactured in East Liberty, Ohio, the Element used a modified second generation CR-V platform with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. By late 2010, shortly before its discontinuation, production had totaled approximately 325,000.
Overview
The Element followed a concept called Model X which was developed by a core group of Honda R&D engineers in 1998 and debuted at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Model X was designed as an activity-oriented vehicle combining features of a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle, and its styling was inspired by a lifeguard station, its roofline arched to evoke the curve of a surfboard.
Noted for its four bi-parting side doors that open to provide a clear aperature of 55.5 inches, the structure of the Element eliminates the B-pillars by reinforcing and enlarging the side sills, floor and roof cross members, and providing five bulkheads per side. The rear door structure have a reinforced vertical beam and, when closed, connect to the body side sill via a hook and catch system, effectively creating a B-pillar. The rear-hinged rear side doors can open only after the forward doors.
The production Element debuted at the 2002 New York International Auto Show with an interior featuring TPO-coated textured urethane flooring; stain-resistant fabric; individually reclining and removable rear seats that stow.
The four-cylinder i-VTEC 2.4 Litre K Engine produced 166 hp (124 kW) at 5800 rpm and 162 lb⋅ft (220 N⋅m) of torque at 4000 rpm for 2007-2011 model years and 160 hp (119 kW) at 5500 rpm and 160 lb⋅ft (217 N⋅m) of torque at 4500 rpm in 2003-2006 model years. Drive is either front-wheel drive or optionally, all wheel drive — via a hydraulically actuated on demand system that engages with front wheel slippage, marketed as "Real Time 4WD". The Element has a towing capacity of 680 kg, or 1500 lbs and a gross weight of 4450 lbs (2018 kg).
In 2007, the Element won the Dogcars.com "Dog Car of the Year" award because of its "versatile cargo space, easy-clean flooring, crate-friendly rear design and optional 4 wheel drive." and in 2010 it won the "Small SUV" category as a "Top Safety Pick" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Annual Awards.
With projected first year sales of 50,000, the Element sold 67,478 units in 2003 in the US. In 2010, just over 14,000 were sold. According to a 2003 survey, 67% of buyers were over 35, 38% were women, and the median age was 42.

Common 2006 Honda Element problems
The Honda Element, produced from 2003 to 2011, is known for its practicality and reliability. However, some model years have specific issues that potential buyers should be aware of. This article will focus on the 2006 Honda Element and its common problems, based on complaints from owners.
- Windshield Leaks: The 2006 Honda Element, like other model years, is prone to windshield leaks, which can lead to rust around the windshield . This is a common issue in Honda Elements, and it is essential to check for rust and leaks when considering a used 2006 model.
- Faulty Airbags: There have been reports of defective side airbags in the 2006 Honda Element, which is a safety concern that should be addressed before purchasing the vehicle.
- Gas Mileage: The 2006 Honda Element does not offer great gas mileage, with an average of 22 miles per gallon and only 25 on the highway . This may not be the best choice for a daily commuter, especially when compared to more modern vehicles that offer significantly better fuel efficiency.
- Key Assembly Issues: Some 2006 Honda Element owners have experienced issues with the key assembly, which can get stuck and require oiling . This can be a frustrating problem, and it is essential to check the key assembly's functionality before purchasing a used 2006 Honda Element.
- Suspension and Steering Components: The 2006 Honda Element's suspension and steering components, such as shocks, can wear out quickly, leading to a less comfortable ride and potential safety issues .
- Starter Position: The starter position in the 2006 Honda Element is not ideal, making maintenance and repairs more difficult . This is something to consider when purchasing a used 2006 Honda Element, as ease of maintenance is an essential factor in vehicle ownership.
- Interior Durability: The driver's seat in the 2006 Honda Element can wear out quickly, leading to a less comfortable driving experience . This is especially true for families with young children, as the seat can become worn out from frequent entry and exit.
- Towing Capacity: While the 2006 Honda Element has a towing capacity, it is not as high as that of a pickup truck, which may be a limiting factor for those who need to tow heavy loads regularly .
- Parts Availability: As the Honda Element has been discontinued, finding parts for the 2006 model can be challenging, and prices for these parts may be higher than for more recent vehicles .
In conclusion, while the 2006 Honda Element has many positive attributes, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues to make an informed decision. Regular maintenance and inspections can help mitigate some of these problems, but it is essential to consider the potential costs and inconveniences associated with these common issues when purchasing a used 2006 Honda Element.
Do Honda Elements have issues?

Is Honda Element a reliable car?
The Honda Element is a reliable vehicle, but it's not without issues. Here are some of them: Engine oil leaks: Elements of model 2003-2011 suffered from engine oil leaks due to faulty oil pressure sensors. This problem is usually indicated with the illumination of the check engine light.
How many miles will a 2006 Honda Element last?

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-02
- VIN: 5J6YH28616L
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The part in my car that has failed twice is the right front seat belt buckle. I was alerted to this problem in June of 2020, when my SRS light lit up. I took the car to AutoNation Honda 104 in Westminster, Co., 80234, on 6/2/20 after learning about Honda's previously documented SRS and seat belt issues. The code that led to the SRS light going on was 22-1, indicating "open or increased resistance in the right buckle tensioner." The part was replaced at that time and the SRS light remained off after the repair. However, in July of 2023, the SRS light went on again. I took it to the same dealership on 7/20/23. I was informed that the same code occurred, and that the part would be replaced again under warranty. However, it was not available due to supply issues. Both times this problem has occurred, I was informed by Honda personnel that the seat belt system might not perform as designed in a crash, creating increased risk of death or injury for a passenger in that seat. I was advised to avoid having passengers ride in that seat. At the 7/20/23 appointment I was informed that the estimated time of arrival (ETA) for this part was 9/2/23. On 9/21/23 I called USA Honda for an update since I had not heard anything from them. I was informed that the ETA was now unknown, and that they would provide me with regular updates via email. However, all subsequent emails indicated an unknown ETA. On 1/10/24 I again contacted contacted USA Honda by phone to ask for an update. I was informed that there is now a "possible" ETA of 5/20/24. Thus the earliest I might get my car fixed is 10 months from when the problem started, if then. Honda has said that the delay is due to problems with the part manufacturer, but has refused to give me information about how to reach this manufacturer. The delay in honoring their warranty, for any reason, amounts to negligence that could lead to death or injury of a passenger, and results in me not being able to use the car as designed.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-09
- VIN: 5J6YH28776L
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: These cars have severe issues with their frames and they rot. There are TONS of recalls in Canada and I am wondering why the same recalls are not in the US - this is equally dangerous regardless of location - especially upstate NY where the climate is extremely similar to Canada. I have had TWO LIFE THREATENING INCIDENTS recently - one with the front axel completely breaking several months ago, and yesterday when the frame and rear axel fell apart. Fortunately both times, I was barely moving or I would likely not be here to be typing this. My frame is so rusted, it is disintegrating and beyond repair. I was advised by my local Sheriff to check on the recalls in Canada and there are so many, basically the whole frame is recalled - I am writing to report that I am in several Honda Element groups here in the US, and there are hundreds of life threatening posts in these groups regularly. This should absolutely be addressed. It is clearly a problem. As you can see in my attachments, otherwise the vehicle is in amazing condition. This is really devastating - and I have a vehicle that I cannot sell or trade-in. There is no value whatsoever and it is beyond repair.

The vehicle was later towed to a welding shop. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 123,000.

I WENT TO MY NEAREST TIRE SHOP THINKING IT COULD BE A WHEEL ALIGNMENT ISSUE AND THEY BROUGHT ME TO THE BACK AND SHOWED ME THE ISSUE. IT IS BEING HELD BY ABOUT 4-5 INCHES OF THE FRAME. THEY ADVISED ME TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED AS IT WAS NOT SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE HOME. I HAVE SINCE NOT BEEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND HAVE IT PARKED IN MY GARAGE. I'M AWARE THAT THIS IS A RECALL BY HONDA IN CANADA WHICH IS A NEIGHBORING BORDER TO MY STATE AND A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH A LOT OF US NORTHERN STATES IN THE U.S. PLEASE ADVISE WHAT CAN BE DONE AS I LOVE THIS VEHICLE BUT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON THE ROAD.

This is the best car I have ever owned! It's so much fun to drive and has plenty of space. If you're looking for a practical and reliable car, this Honda is perfect for you. The sound system is great and it's surprisingly roomy - even more so than the Hummer H2 and H3. Plus, it's very easy to park anywhere.
-
I think the Element is a really reliable car, and it's the best car I've ever driven in the snow. The only downside is that the front seat can become uncomfortable on long trips (anything over 50 miles). I was wondering if you could tell me what the maximum towing capacity is? A salesman at Salem, NH Honda told me that the tongue weight can be no more than 1500 lbs., but I could tow over 2500 lbs. Is this true?

I'm so glad I bought the Element, even though my friends advised against it based on its looks. Now, two of my most vocal friends are planning to buy one too! Living in Minnesota, I've found that the Element AWD tracks beautifully on slippery roads. I've owned 4WD cars and trucks for a long time, but this one beats them all. Plus, cleaning up after my white German Shepherd Dog is a breeze - no hair gets permanently stuck on any fabrics or flooring. The Element can even climb sandy hills and muddy slopes, and it's really fun to drive on dry pavement. I'm constantly impressed with it!
-
The Element has been my favorite car since 2003. I like the boxy design. I think it needs GPS, heated seats, and four separate doors.
-
This is my first Honda and I'm really impressed with the build quality. Although the rear doors can be a bit tricky to use when parked next to another car, the value for money is unbeatable. With features like four-wheel disc brakes w/ABS, four air bags, a bumpin' stereo system, and power mirrors, windows, and locks, this car has everything you need. Plus, it has more than enough power for highway speeds and a very tight turning circle.

This was our first Honda and our last. On day one, we experienced some issues with the steering, but thankfully, the dealership was able to quickly install a new rack-pinion. We also had some trouble with the seats, but the dealership was able to recover both front seats. We did have some concerns with the tires, gas mileage, tail gate hinges, and visibility, especially when parked next to another car. Additionally, we feel that the suicide doors should be removed and that the vehicle should be made into a 5-passenger car, as there is plenty of room. However, we appreciate the opportunity to try out a Honda and thank you for your service.

This car handles very well in winter weather, however, the brake pads, rotors, and calipers may not hold up as well. If you live in the northern US or Canada, it may be worth considering other options. Unfortunately, some components of the brakes have been known to rust out, warp, or seize within 32k miles. This is not up to Honda's usual high standards. It's important to note that the dealership may label these design flaws as 'normal.' If you have the extra money, a Toyota may be a good alternative. If not, there are other options to consider.

I've owned Hondas before and never had any issues with them. When I decided to buy the Element, I thought it would be a reliable and functional little SUV. Unfortunately, it has been to the dealership six times for the same sputtering under acceleration. However, the Honda of America representative assured me that they would fix it or buy it back. Since then, it has been sitting at the dealership for nearly a month waiting for answers. I have been patient, but they seem to question my urgency in resolving the issue. It's frustrating to make car payments on a car that I can't use. Honda should stand behind their product when there is a problem. We all make mistakes, but hiding behind voicemails is not the way to handle them.

I really like the way this car/truck/SUV handles. It's spacious and practical, and the interior is easy to care for. I've owned several Hondas and have never had a complaint. I'm also a happy owner of a 2006 Accord. While the Element is advertised to get 22 miles in the city and 24 on the highway, I typically get 17 in the city and 19 on the highway when I drive conservatively. It does consume more gas than a full-size SUV, and the gas tank is small, holding only 12 gallons before the reserve. This means that the highway range is limited to 250 miles, which may not be ideal for long trips outside of town. If you're looking for an SUV for trips to the country, you may want to consider other options.

I can tell you really loved your 2006 Element! It's understandable that rising gas prices and changes in the 2007 models made you reconsider. But it's great to hear that you still appreciate the honeycomb grill on your car and how easy it is to clean the interior.
