The Honda Element is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Honda and marketed in North America over a single generation for model years 2003–2011 — and noted for its boxy exterior styling with bi-parting side doors and its boxy, flexible interior layout.

Manufactured in East Liberty, Ohio, the Element used a modified second generation CR-V platform with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. By late 2010, shortly before its discontinuation, production had totaled approximately 325,000.

Overview

The Element followed a concept called Model X which was developed by a core group of Honda R&D engineers in 1998 and debuted at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Model X was designed as an activity-oriented vehicle combining features of a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle, and its styling was inspired by a lifeguard station, its roofline arched to evoke the curve of a surfboard.

Noted for its four bi-parting side doors that open to provide a clear aperature of 55.5 inches, the structure of the Element eliminates the B-pillars by reinforcing and enlarging the side sills, floor and roof cross members, and providing five bulkheads per side. The rear door structure have a reinforced vertical beam and, when closed, connect to the body side sill via a hook and catch system, effectively creating a B-pillar. The rear-hinged rear side doors can open only after the forward doors.

The production Element debuted at the 2002 New York International Auto Show with an interior featuring TPO-coated textured urethane flooring; stain-resistant fabric; individually reclining and removable rear seats that stow.

The four-cylinder i-VTEC 2.4 Litre K Engine produced 166 hp (124 kW) at 5800 rpm and 162 lb⋅ft (220 N⋅m) of torque at 4000 rpm for 2007-2011 model years and 160 hp (119 kW) at 5500 rpm and 160 lb⋅ft (217 N⋅m) of torque at 4500 rpm in 2003-2006 model years. Drive is either front-wheel drive or optionally, all wheel drive — via a hydraulically actuated on demand system that engages with front wheel slippage, marketed as "Real Time 4WD". The Element has a towing capacity of 680 kg, or 1500 lbs and a gross weight of 4450 lbs (2018 kg).

In 2007, the Element won the Dogcars.com "Dog Car of the Year" award because of its "versatile cargo space, easy-clean flooring, crate-friendly rear design and optional 4 wheel drive." and in 2010 it won the "Small SUV" category as a "Top Safety Pick" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Annual Awards.

With projected first year sales of 50,000, the Element sold 67,478 units in 2003 in the US. In 2010, just over 14,000 were sold. According to a 2003 survey, 67% of buyers were over 35, 38% were women, and the median age was 42.

Common 2004 Honda Element problems

The Honda Element, produced from 2003 to 2011, is known for its reliability and practicality. However, some model years have reported more issues than others. Here are the common problems with the Honda Element, specifically the 2004 model, based on complaints from owners:

  • Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Light: Another common issue reported by Honda Element owners is the SRS light illuminating, which relates to the airbags. This can be caused by a faulty wire harness and may require repairing or replacing the harness to remedy the issue.
  • Rear Differential Noise: Some owners of 4-wheel-drive Honda Elements have complained about loud groaning noises from the rear differential, especially when turning. This issue can be caused by a breakdown of differential fluid and can be fixed by servicing the rear differential.
  • Variable Timing Oil Leak (P2646): The variable timing control solenoid gasket can leak, causing major oil leaks. This issue is associated with code P2646, which is related to the same solenoid. The solenoid can get clogged, activating during high RPMs for oil pressure, indicating low oil pressure even if the oil level is fine. Regular maintenance and oil changes can help prevent this issue .
  • Ignition Switch: The ignition switch is another common problem in the Honda Element, particularly in the 1st generation models from 2003 to 2011. This issue can cause difficulty starting the car or turning the ignition .
  • Power Steering Pump Failure: Some 2004 Honda Element owners have reported power steering pump failure, causing fluid to leak and potentially damaging the engine. Replacing the power steering pump, alternator, and belt are necessary to fix this issue.
  • Battery Light: The battery light coming on and off can indicate an issue with the electrical system. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent this issue from becoming more serious.

These common problems with the Honda Element, particularly the 2004 model, should be considered when buying a used Element. Regular maintenance, checks, and timely repairs can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

How many miles can a 2004 Honda Element last?

We mentioned that a typical Honda Element can last 250,000-300,000 miles. Thus, high mileage for the car is anything over 200,000 miles and closing in on 250,000. By this point, the Element is much more likely to experience issues that cost more to repair than the car did.

What can go wrong with a Honda Element?

If you want to keep driving your Honda Element for a long time, you'll have to resolve any issues as soon as they pop up. Engine oil leaks, differential fluid breakdowns, and faulty door locks can all interfere with your Element's driveability, even with its high reliability rating.

Are there any recalls on a 2004 Honda Element?

2004 Honda Element Recalls

The vehicles are equipped with passenger frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

How strong is Honda Element?

For power the Honda Element has a 2.4-liter inline-4 engine, rated at 166 horsepower and 161 pound-feet of torque.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
  • VIN: 5J6YH28604L
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The trailer arm rusted at the mount. I was told it was not safe to drive. I have learned that this is a common problem with this vehicle and Honda has issued a recall in Canada, but not the USA. I also learned that there is a similar issue with I believe the Honda CRV and that has been in recall from Honda in I believe both Canada and the US. I found a place to do the repair and he said he has seen a lot worse than mine and has done many of these repairs.. The total repair cost is $1500. I also learned that due to its design water gets trapped in the mount and causes the rust, which sounds definitely like a design flaw. The repair entails fabrication a whole new mount for the trailer arm. I discovered it on June 7th when I was doing some under body clean up.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-12
  • VIN: 5J6YH28654L
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: ● The area of the body that serves as the forward mounting point for the rear driver-side trailing arm has completely rusted though. At this mounting point, the trailing arm mounting bracket has become entirely separated from the body leaving only one bolt securing the trailing arm to the body. This is the same issue for which these vehicles have been recalled in Canada. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. ● Continuing to operate the vehicle in this condition presents the possibility of catastrophic failure of the trailing arm mount, resulting in loss of control of the vehicle, endangering the lives of those in and outside of the vehicle. ● No, I have not taken the vehicle to a dealer or service center. ● No the vehicle/component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representative. ● No warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the appearance of the problem on [XXX]. WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
  • VIN: 5J6YH28634L
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I'm am told the component that failed is the "lower control arm." The vehicle is available for inspection. At the onset of this problem was a loss of control of my steering. At first I felt a play in the steering wheel when I made a small adjustment in my turn and felt the car move more than what it would normally do. I thought it was the waves in the road due to frost heaves. Then within about 3/4s of a mile the left "lower control arm" separated from where it was being held and fell to the ground. I heard a dragging noise in the back left area of my vehicle and was fortunate to be in front of a parking lot and was able to immediately pull in out of traffic. The car was towed to our auto repair shop where I was told it was unfixable. I also called the Honda dealership and explained the issue, and was confirmed that the car is unfixable, and was told that presently the part causing this issue is being recalled in Canada, but not yet in the USA. I wanted you to know that this happened here in the USA as well. I did not receive any warnings that there was an issue until it happened.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-19
  • VIN: 5J6YH27534L
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: There is a corrosion recall on 2003-2014 Honda elements in Canada because, from salted roads, the frame rusts and extremely important safety parts can break and cause death to the driver. Seeing as these elements are made in the same factories and are in the same region (mine is in Detroit Michigan, only 10 minutes from Canada) this recall NEEDS to be extended to the USA or at least the regions where salted roads and snow are prevalent. My Honda element suffers from this exact problem but I can do nothing about it.

SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
  • VIN: 5J6YH28534L
  • Components: SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The fuel filler neck has rusted through. If pumping gas into the vehicle, gasoline runs onto the ground by the rear tire. The rear trailing arm of the suspension has significant rust. I am concerned this suspension part could fail and become unattached to the vehicle frame/body. The Canadian transportation board has ordered a recall to repairs these issues. from Transport Canada: Toronto, Ontario — Honda is recalling all 2003-2011 Element SUVs, warning of rusting rear frames that could result in the complete separation of the rear trailing arm.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-16
  • VIN: 5J6YH28644L
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: the left rear trailing arm separated from the body causing the wheel to turn outward and stop moving.
2023-08-15

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
  • VIN: 5J6YH28544L
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The rear driver’s side trailing arm, which connects to the frame and body of the car, is rusted out to the point where it can no longer be driven safely. If the arm detaches from the body, it will cause an extremely dangerous situation which can even result in death. I can no longer drive this vehicle, even though the engine and transmission are strong. There is no repair for this without spending thousands of dollars to cut and repair the rusted area. This is an extremely common issue with the Honda Elements in areas that get snow. It needs to be addressed because it may cause serious harm to those are are not as familiar with the underside of their vehicle.

STEERING,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-29
  • VIN: 5J6YH28654L
  • Components: STEERING,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While driving down a city street, heard a very loud crack/bang, and lost control of the vehicle. Fortunately I was going slow, 20-30mph and was able to safely stop. Upon exiting the vehicle, the rear driver side wheel was hanging at a weird angle. Looking under the car, the entire trailing arm and wheel assembly has broken off of the frame. If I was going faster, or had been on the highway, this would have caused an accident/rollover and injury for sure. Looking online for more information, I see that this is a known issue, and Honda has already issued a recall, but only for Canada. Vehicle was towed to and inspected by a AAA certified auto shop; they have written it off as a total loss, and suggest to sell the vehicle for parts. I contacted Honda, and they have told me to take it to a dealership for additional inspection by them.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
  • VIN: 5j6yh18604l
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: While driving in the freeway; the low beam lights went out and would no longer work. For visibility purposes, I was forced to use high beam lights to make it home while impairing the driving ability of others. The low beams and high beams run on the same light bulb. While using the high beams, the bulbs work as intended. The light bulbs and relays were promptly replaced and the issue is not fixed. It is often caused the a malfunctioning multiswitch that controls lighting and blinkers. The issue is well known within Honda elements and a previous recall have been issued for other Honda models including the Honda civic. Oftentimes the wiring goes back due to the switch malfunctioning. This is extremely unsafe toward everyone on the road as we lack visibility and by using high beams, we unwantingly blind other drivers which could result in injury by other drivers, passengers, and even pedestrians.

Lastly, unless included in "Zone A" or "Zone B" above, Honda is recalling model year 2002-2004 Odyssey and model year 2003-2004 Acura MDX, Honda Element, and Honda Pilot vehicles originally sold, or registered, in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began June 27, 2016. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are KA0, KA1, KA2, and KA3.

Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.

Negative 2004 Honda Element car reviews

  1. Landen Kuhlman 2024-11-23

The car is very reliable and always starts even in extreme cold weather. However, due to its boxy shape, it may be difficult to control in high winds. The ride can be a bit rough and it can only accommodate four people due to the cup holders between the two back bucket seats. Unfortunately, the car has a terrible MPG and we only got about 20 miles on the highway. We also experienced an issue with the driver's side airbag deploying while the car was parked, which seems to be a common problem in Elements that Honda has yet to address. Additionally, the seats are already splitting at the seams on the driver's side. Lastly, we have had to replace the windshield three times. Despite these issues, we still enjoy driving the car and find it to be a reliable mode of transportation.

  2. Matt D'Amore 2024-11-23

I have thoroughly enjoyed my Honda Element. While ease of cleaning is certainly a top priority, I have noticed a significant obstruction in the view of oncoming traffic due to the vertical supports on the sides of the front windshield. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a few close calls with oncoming cars. However, I have since compensated for this issue and remain confident in the safety of my vehicle.

  3. Elbert Walter 2024-10-27

The Honda Element has some issues that need to be addressed. The windshield cracking from a tiny pebble is a common problem among owners of the 2004 model, and unfortunately, it is not covered under warranty. Additionally, securing a baby car seat in the back seat can be difficult and unsafe. These issues should be taken seriously and addressed by Honda. It is important to note that there is a recall on the 2003 model for similar issues. For more information and to see other complaints, please visit hondaelementscrack.com. Despite these issues, the Honda Element has many great features and is a reliable car overall.

  4. Deshawn Beatty 2024-08-23

The car has a stylish design, but unfortunately, I have experienced issues with the brake system, gas mileage, and suspension. The tires are also not very responsive on the poor Pennsylvania roads. I would not recommend purchasing this car due to its poor performance for the money.

  5. Abdul Dibbert 2024-07-06

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been facing with your Honda. It is concerning to know that the backseats do not lock and cannot accommodate child car seats, which can be very dangerous. It is unfortunate that this issue was not discovered earlier. I understand that you have already contacted the local dealer and national Honda, but have not received the response you were hoping for. It is disappointing to hear that they did not show much concern for your safety. As a customer, your safety should be their top priority. I hope that they will take your feedback seriously and work towards finding a solution to this issue. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Positive 2004 Honda Element car reviews

  1. Evan Murray 2024-11-17

I've had my Element for ten months now and it's been the most functional vehicle I've ever owned. While there are a few things that could be improved upon, overall it's been a great experience. The suicide doors, while essential to the function of this truck, can pose a problem for back seat passengers. It's worth noting that the front seatbelt must be unbuckled and the front door opened before the back seat passenger can enter or exit. Additionally, the windows barely open at all in the back seat. For these reasons, I would recommend the vehicle to someone who only carries passengers occasionally. However, for an active lifestyle, the Element cannot be beat!

  2. Cornelius Macejkovic 2024-10-20

I love the truck! The only thing I would change is the backdoors. I would prefer if they opened independently, without having to open the driver's door.

  3. Uriah Bechtelar 2024-10-10

This car has a great balance of performance, driveability, and economy. It has decent acceleration and fuel economy, averaging around 22-23 mpg. The car handles hills at interstate speeds effortlessly. Although the shifter looks a bit funky, it works well. Most controls are simple and straightforward, and the seats are comfortable. The handling is precise, and the ride is firm but not jarring. There are some nice surprises, such as sunvisor extenders and storage everywhere. However, there are also some quirks to be aware of, such as the high belt line that makes reaching drive-up ATMs a stretch, gauges that are hard to read on cloudy days, awkward dashboard light adjustment, no glove box light, and cargo that slides on the plastic floor as you drive. Unfortunately, the optional armrest/storage bin is not available with the stick shift, so you'll have to install it yourself.

  4. Carson Green 2024-08-07

I owned this SUV for five years. Although the seats were uncomfortable and the ride was rough, these were the only drawbacks I experienced.

  5. Toy Hilpert 2024-08-06

I love it! It's very reliable.
