2012 Honda Crosstour problems

honda logo

The Honda Crosstour (initially branded the Accord Crosstour) is a mid-size crossover SUV with a sloping rear roofline manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda. It is based on the North American eighth-generation Accord. Sales began in November 2009 for the 2010 model year, and the vehicle was discontinued after the 2015 model year due to slow sales.

Design

The Crosstour was marketed as a "hatchback"/"wagon" variation of the Accord and shared the same platform. The Crosstour was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine (choice of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive) or 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine (front-wheel drive only), with prices that started at $29,670, above those of the Accord sedan (which started at under $23,000). For the 2012 model year, Honda removed the "Accord" prefix, making the name just "Crosstour", and gave its front grille a restyle. A four-cylinder engine for front-wheel drive models was released in late 2011 and put on sale in early 2012.

The Crosstour was a direct competitor to the Toyota Venza, a crossover wagon based upon the Accord's perennial competitor, the Camry. And like the Venza, which was meant to replace the Camry wagon, the Crosstour was considered a successor to the Accord wagon.

In terms of positioning, the Crosstour slotted between the compact CR-V and fullsize Pilot in Honda's crossover SUV lineup, Compared to the Pilot, the Crosstour was longer but had two rows of seating compared to the Pilot's three and had approximately 50 cubic feet less interior space.

The Crosstour was sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Russia. Guangqi Honda built and marketed the Crosstour in China.

Common 2012 Honda Crosstour problems

The Honda Crosstour, introduced in 2010, is a midsize crossover SUV that combines sedan comfort with crossover utility. While generally considered a reliable vehicle, certain model years have experienced specific issues that owners have reported. Here are some common problems with the Honda Crosstour 2012 based on complaints from owners:

  • Brake Wear and Noise: Some owners have reported premature brake wear and noise, requiring earlier than normal replacement. This can be an inconvenience and an additional cost for vehicle maintenance.
  • Transmission Issues: Automatic transmission issues have been reported in the 2012 Honda Crosstour, causing shifting delays or harsh shifting. These issues can affect the driving experience and may require professional attention to resolve.
  • Starter Failure: A few owners have experienced starter failure, which can result in the starter grinding or failing to start the engine. This can be a significant inconvenience and may require professional repair.
  • Recalled Airbags: In some cases, airbags in the 2012 Honda Crosstour have been recalled due to potential deployment issues, which can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
  • Steering and Suspension Problems: Owners have reported issues with the steering and suspension system, including shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage, power steering, wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, and electronic or air suspension. These issues can affect the vehicle's handling and ride comfort.
  • Recall for Passenger Frontal Air Bag Inflator: The 2012 Honda Crosstour has been subject to a recall related to the passenger frontal air bag inflator. In the event of a crash, an incorrectly installed air bag inflator may deploy the air bag improperly, increasing the risk of injury.

While the Honda Crosstour is generally considered a reliable vehicle, these issues should be taken into consideration when purchasing a 2012 model. Regular maintenance and addressing concerns as they arise can help mitigate these problems and ensure the Crosstour remains a dependable and satisfying choice for many drivers.

The Honda Crosstour has an estimated 200,000-mile lifespan. If you travel 20,000 miles per year, you can use your Crosstour for ten years before needing major repairs. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: 5J6TF2H51CL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Car was due for timing belt maintenance at 100k miles. Timing belt and related parts were changed August 2023. I was told belt will last 100k miles. October 2024, 13.5 months later, the belt fails and causes catastrophic damage to the engine. My son had to push the car to the side the highway when this happened. Honda service said the engine is “toast” and is a cost of $7,000 to be replaced. Reached out to Honda corporate for help due to defective part. They said the part had a 12 month warranty and the car is too old to help you. I can only trust the people but so much but I should be able to trust the parts when they are OEM. Disappointed Honda no longer stands behind it parts.

This issue causes extra wear on the engine, which could then lead to catastrophic failure. That causes great hazard as that failure can occur at any time. Honda is currently charging owners roughly $2000 (in Wake County, NC) to repair this issue. This should be a covered recall for all owners, to avoid engine failure, accidents, and potential deaths on the roads.

Negative 2012 Honda Crosstour car reviews

I have mixed feelings about my Honda Crosstour. While I love the ride, I have experienced some issues with the carpet in the rear on both passenger and driver side pulling away after only 3 years. Despite my attempts to tuck it back in, it still pulls away regularly, which is frustrating. Additionally, I have had some trouble with the interior lights, which seem to have a short in them and only work intermittently. However, the most concerning issue is with the backup camera, which is very dark and crucial for safety. Despite multiple visits to Honda, they have been unable to fix the issue, which has caused me a lot of stress and near accidents. I am hesitant to take it back again, but I am also worried about the resale value if I switch to a different brand. Overall, it has been a frustrating experience, but I am hopeful that a solution can be found.

This car model with the V6 comes with a motor warranty from Honda of America. Unfortunately, mine lost a cylinder at 110,450 miles. However, Honda rebuilt the engine and replaced most everything, and I only had to pay about $600. They even provided a free rental for a day. I was thrilled to discover this after reporting the issue to the NTHSA.

That's a very handsome car, but I decided against it because of the rear view blind spots.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a quick story about my Crosstour. I bought it used in 2012 with 80k miles and everything was going great until I had to set the parking brake. Unfortunately, the right rear caliper seized up and ended up smoking the rotor and pads. I took it to the Honda dealer and they were able to turn the rotor, install new pads and a new caliper for just one wheel, which ended up costing me $750.00. A year later, I experienced the same failure with the left rear caliper while I was in Michigan. Luckily, I found a great mechanic named Greg who was able to make the same repair for just $250.00. I'm so grateful for his help and expertise!

I purchased this car new in 2012 and initially loved it due to my previous positive experiences with Honda Accords. However, I noticed a persistent vibration between 21-24 mph that made it feel as though the car was about to stall. Despite taking the car back to Honda multiple times within the first year of ownership and having several parts replaced, the vibration persisted.

I've owned this car for six years now and I have nothing bad to say about my Honda Crosstour. I really hope Honda will release a new model soon!

What a lovely story! When we walked into the showroom 8 years ago, we were immediately drawn to the beautiful blue Crosstour sitting proudly on the floor. Since then, she has been an awesome set of wheels, trouble-free and a joy to drive. We can't imagine parting with her now. This car has been both dependable and fun for us!

This car is a little low to the ground, which actually works well for it being an AWD vehicle. It's a dependable and safe car, but it's worth noting that the passenger seat doesn't heat up as much as you might expect. However, the driver's side seat heats up really well. It's now nearing 70k.

I used to own a 2006 Civic but needed a larger and more comfortable vehicle. After considering a CRV, I was attracted to the Crosstour's strong V6, excellent build quality, and comfort. I also liked the fact that it was not as common as other cars. I purchased my Crosstour as a certified Honda with 39,000 miles on it and have been impressed with its ride quality, comfort, safety, and build quality. Although some people complain about the view when looking in the rearview mirror, I found that I got used to it after a couple of days. I happen to like the styling and think the vehicle looks very good. The V6 engine is extremely powerful, making it a great family vehicle. I strongly recommend it.

  5. Jeffrey Lockman 2024-07-14

I bought this car back in July of 2012 and it has been a great ride ever since. The car is very smooth and feels like a 5-series BMW. The traction control on this car is excellent, which makes me feel safe while driving. Unfortunately, I was hit by an idiot driver in the rear end, but the car held up very well and only suffered a few scrapes on the back bumper. The car is also great on gas, which is a plus. The only downside is that the power in this car is not the best, but I knew that when I bought it. If I wanted more power, I would have gone for a Porsche instead of a Honda. However, it would be nice to have at least 70 more horsepower in this 4 cylinder engine. When my lease is up, I plan on getting the 6 cylinder engine. One of the best things about this car is that it can comfortably fit 4 REAL size people, even 6'2
