2022 Chevrolet Trax problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Trax is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors and marketed under the Chevrolet brand since 2013, currently in its second generation.

The first generation model was released globally in 2013 as the smallest, entry-level crossover SUV offering from the brand. Development and production were centered in South Korea by GM Korea. A restyled model was also produced as the Buick Encore in North America and as the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka in Europe.

In several markets, the vehicle was marketed as the Chevrolet Tracker, and as the Holden Trax in Australia and New Zealand. The Trax became available in Canada, Mexico, Germany, South Korea, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, and Europe for the 2013 model year and was released in the United States for the 2015 model year.

In 2019, GM released the replacement of the Trax for China and Latin America, the Tracker. The first-generation Trax continued to be marketed in North America, South Korea, and several other markets until 2022, when it was replaced by the larger second-generation Trax due for the 2024 model year. The second-generation Trax is also marketed in China as the Chevrolet Seeker.

Common 2022 Chevrolet Trax problems

The 2022 Chevy Trax is a compact SUV that has been praised for its sporty design and fun driving experience. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its issues. Based on complaints from owners, the most common problems with the 2022 Chevy Trax include:

  1. Body roll problems: Many drivers have reported that the 2022 Chevy Trax has more body roll than they are used to, meaning that the vehicle tends to lean more to one side or the other when going around sharp turns. This can lead to a feeling of instability and discomfort for some drivers.
  2. Transmission issues: Another common complaint from 2022 Chevy Trax owners is transmission problems. Drivers have reported that the vehicle jerks and accelerates while they are trying to drive it, and in some cases, it refuses to shift into reverse. These issues can be particularly problematic and may require costly repairs.
  3. Oil leak faults: Finally, some owners of the 2022 Chevy Trax have reported issues with oil leaks in the system. These leaks are most common in the turbocharged versions of the Trax and can lead to further damage to the system and even fires if not addressed promptly.

While these issues are certainly concerning, it is important to note that the 2022 Chevy Trax has not been on the market for very long, and there is limited data available on its long-term reliability. However, based on similar models and the Chevrolet brand's overall reliability, it is expected to have average reliability when compared to other new cars.

If you are considering purchasing a used 2022 Chevy Trax, it is important to be aware of these common issues and to thoroughly inspect the vehicle before making a purchase. It may also be worth considering purchasing an extended warranty or service contract to help cover the cost of any potential repairs.

In summary, while the 2022 Chevy Trax is a fun and sporty compact SUV, it is not without its issues. Common problems include body roll, transmission issues, and oil leaks, particularly in the turbocharged versions of the vehicle. However, with proper maintenance and inspection, these issues can be addressed and managed over time.

Negative 2022 Chevrolet Trax car reviews

If you're in the market for an SUV that comes in a small package, the Trax is definitely worth considering. It offers good visibility, a relatively comfortable ride, and more space than a compact sedan. While the acceleration may not be the fastest, the Trax still provides adequate access to the rear seats and enough room for your groceries and packages. Although the engine may be a bit underpowered, it's still a solid choice. While there may be competitors that do the compact SUV better, the Trax is a great option if you're a Chevy fan.

  2. Andrew Grady 2025-07-27

Firstly, this car requires higher octane gas which can be expensive when gas prices rise. Without it, the car sputters and loses power. Additionally, in hot weather, the car struggles on inclines, but this issue seems to resolve in cooler temperatures. The car also has a bumpy shift, and it may be worth checking the transmission. If you plan on storing anything between the front seats, it may slide to the back floor, but a cup in the center back holder can prevent this. The air conditioning and air recirculating buttons have dim lights, making it difficult to tell if they are on or off, especially in sunny weather. The push-button key fob recognition system can be frustrating, as it won't unlock or start if it doesn't detect the fob. The car is also prone to dents and scratches, and the windshield is easily damaged. The tires are an odd size, which can make it difficult to find replacements. Lastly, the display that reminds you not to take your eyes off the road can be distracting. Overall, this car has some quirks that may take some getting used to, but with some adjustments, it can still be a reliable vehicle.I like Chevys, but not this car.

I purchased my first brand new car, a 202 Chevrolet Trax AWD, on February 4th, 2020. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the vehicle that have been frustrating. At 1200 miles, the check engine light came on and the car shut off on me in the middle of a blizzard on the interstate in Wyoming. The dealership in Wyoming replaced my fuel filter, but the issue persisted. Despite this, the dealership did not provide me with a loaner car, which was covered under my warranty. When I picked up my car a few days later, it still wouldn't start. The dealership took it back into service and charged me $130 to drain my fuel, claiming it wasn't covered under my bumper to bumper warranty. Although I was disappointed, I was glad to have my car back. However, it still wasn't running right and I had to take it to a local dealership in Texas. They were able to fix the issue with the turbo charger, but unfortunately, the stalling issue and clanking noise still persisted. I hope to get these issues resolved soon.I had to take my car back to the shop again. It was there for 5 days and apparently had eroded spark plugs, even though it's a brand new car. Unfortunately, after only 7 days of having it back, it started stalling so badly that I almost got into an accident on Highway 75 in Dallas with my child in the back seat. I'm disappointed in GM and Chevy for making such a poor quality vehicle and for their service departments treating me like I'm stupid just because I'm a woman. They've refused to look into the issue even though I've brought it to their attention numerous times. My car has now been back in the shop for a week, and unfortunately, I haven't received any communication from the service department. I hope GM and Chevy will take responsibility for their actions and treat their customers with the respect they deserve. As a mother, I'm concerned for my child's safety and I hope they will take this issue seriously. This is my first brand new vehicle and it has been a disappointing experience so far.

I love a lot of the options and the Chevy Infotainment system. However, if you happen to be a tall or large person, this car may not be the most comfortable option for you. The angle of the seat and the actual size of the seat itself can be quite uncomfortable.

  5. Sherwood Gerhold 2024-10-15

I've owned two Chevys now, and I've noticed that once you start getting closer to 80-90,000 miles, there tend to be more problems. However, for the first few years and lower mileage, it's a great car that requires very little maintenance. It's a good option for those who don't plan on keeping it past three years or that certain mileage. In my experience, I've had to replace the turbo, battery, water pump, and tube that feeds my anti-freeze due to a burst, but overall it's been a reliable car.

Positive 2022 Chevrolet Trax car reviews

  1. Valentin Treutel 2025-08-12

I'm 64 years old and have been driving since I was 9 years old. I absolutely love cars and have owned well over a hundred used cars and trucks, as well as about 20 new ones. I've owned just about every model GM made, Fords, Dodge, Chryslers, Toyotas, Nissans, Kias, VWs, and even a Subaru, just to name a few. I've never put over 50,000 miles on any of them, as I tend to switch them up quite frequently. However, in 2014, I decided I wanted a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan, despite the not-so-great reviews at the time. It turned out to be one of the best cars I've ever owned! I bought it with just 9,000 miles on it, and it now has over 109,000 miles. My wife and I love it so much - it's incredibly comfortable and we can haul just about anything in it. It gets 23 to 25 mpg and has a strong V-6 engine. I even use it to pull my 6 X 12 utility trailer! All I've needed are oil and filter changes, tires, and one set of brake pads at 70,000 miles. I've had no breakdowns or issues whatsoever. I said all that to say this: I just purchased a 2020 Chevrolet Trax LS AWD with cruise control and the 16-inch aluminum wheel option. It was a demo with 2,500 miles, and I paid $16,000 for it. (FYI: The LS is the only model that does not have start-stop technology, which is a very good thing in my opinion.) I drove the car 150 miles from the dealership to my home and was more than impressed. Critics call it choppy and underpowered, but I found the car to be very comfortable and had more than adequate power, even at 70 to 90 mph. The car is also very stable at these speeds. I would compare this to my 2013 KIA Sorento, which cost $24,000 at the time. Of course, only time will tell on the reliability, but I'm fairly confident that the critics are wrong about this one.

  2. Cyrus Monahan 2025-08-03

This car is smaller than what I've had in a long time, but it has everything I need. The car seat fits in easily, and my elderly parents can get in and out without any problems. The sound system is good, and the seats are comfortable.

  3. Antwon Stracke 2025-07-19

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2020 LT! With AWD and only for $19000, that's a great deal. I'm glad to hear that you fit comfortably in the Trax, and it's great to know that the car is solid and gets great mileage for an AWD. It's amazing to hear that it performs so well in the snow too! In my opinion, this is one of the biggest bargains in the US auto market. Enjoy your new car!

  4. Rickie Spinka 2025-07-02

My spouse and I recently test drove this vehicle and we were pleasantly surprised by its great value. We were initially concerned about the power, as some reviews had mentioned it as a negative aspect, but we found it to be perfectly adequate. In fact, we found it to be quite peppy in traffic and adequate on the highway. Of course, if you're looking for more power, you may want to consider a larger SUV with a V-8 engine. However, for a subcompact SUV, this vehicle is definitely underrated. We have decided to purchase one and would highly recommend it to others who are looking for a reliable and affordable option.
