The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 2005 Honda Cr-v problems

The 2005 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV that is known for its practicality, spacious interior, and sedan-like handling. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners.

One of the most significant issues with the 2005 Honda CR-V is airbag-related problems, which account for more than a quarter of the 462 total complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The SUV has been recalled ten times for airbag issues, with the last recall in 2019. However, complaints of airbag failure continue to be reported years later.

Another common problem with the 2005 Honda CR-V is exterior lighting issues, with drivers reporting that low beam light bulbs burn out on a monthly basis. This issue has not been addressed with a recall, but it can be a significant inconvenience for drivers.

Electrical issues are also a common problem with the 2005 Honda CR-V, with 73 electrical complaints on file. One of the most worrying issues is the smell of burning wires coming from the driver side door, which is caused by bad wiring in the power locks, windows, and mirror controls. While the rate of incidence is low, it is still a concerning issue for drivers.

In addition to these common problems, the 2005 Honda CR-V has 14 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which may sound high, but considering there are just 462 complaints registered, it would seem that most of these recalls were issued before minor issues became major problems.

Despite these common problems, the 2005 Honda CR-V is known for its reliability and durability. With proper maintenance, a new Honda CR-V is a strong contender for the half-million-mile club, and a used CR-V should last for at least 250,000 miles.

In conclusion, while the 2005 Honda CR-V has its share of common problems, it is still a reliable and practical compact SUV that is well-regarded for its fuel economy, spacious interior, and sedan-like handling. With proper maintenance, it can last for hundreds of thousands of miles, making it a smart investment for drivers looking for a reliable and practical vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-13
  • VIN: SHSRD78805U
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was driving in town so, each block has either a stop sign or a traffic light. I realized that my brake pad seemed to get spongy. At the red light as I was nervous that there was something wrong I looked down and seen a light blinking but, it was my oil light. After heading to the next block my brakes were suddenly not doing anything and the pedal went down to the floor. I was not going fast so I decided that if I had to I would pull the emergency brake. I did that as well to no avail. I went to the closest parking lot and checked all my fluid. My oil was fine, my brake fluid was low. I added brake fluid and went on my way. The following day I left my home as usual and another light came on. The oxygen sensor. I'm not sure why the vehicle is doing this as I do keep up with maintenance. I have spoken with a mechanic , his assessment was it could be anything yet seems to be electrical. I did some research do to the fact that my car has been with me since 2009 (used). I would love to keep my car for as many more years as possible but, I also have to be safe. At this point it has to be something wrong with the products I'm using on my vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-18
  • VIN: JHLRD78515C
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Passenger rear trailing arm broke off from body mount. Vehicle is still available for inspection. Coming to a stop sign and car came to an abrupt stop. Something had stopped the car before I even got to the stop sign. Coming down to the stop sign car began to lost steering and swayed back and forth. Car is in very good condition has 138,100 miles on it. But now it can,t be driven cant be fixed and be safe. Still books for $3200.00. Our family was left vulnerable to a horrible accident if going any faster when this happened. Broke down on a back road at 10:30 p.m. close to a stop sign. Had to be towed. A recall of the 2007 to 2011 CR-V. stated that this happens to those models. They didn't go back far enough on this recall and if I hadn't told people who still have the 2005- 2006 model they wouldn't have known and this could happen to them. Vehicle was inspected by insurance co. and Honda dealership and reported to Honda corp. Rust no coverage or repair for this vehicle. Mechanic looked at can't repair and make safe. Same problem as those vehicles recalled. But because it wasn't on the recall list there is nothing they can do about this vehicle. This left me, my loved ones vulnerable to a serious accident if I had been on a freeway let alone on any road going 50 and above in speed. No warnings what so ever that this could happen. No messages, no lamps no letters from Honda nothing.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
  • VIN: shsrd78865u
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Approximately 2-3 months ago as I was driving I smelled a warm, buring electical smell coming from the left door. Immediately after this I had noticed my driver side lock, power mirror controls, would not work on the drivers side. After speaking with my mechanic I was told that this issue has a current safety bulletin opened for it. Today I took my car to Apple Honda of York to have the recall taken care of. The issues persisted and Honda refused to inspect the door wiring. The remedy of this solution was to be as follows: Remedy Please call any authorized Honda dealer and make an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. The dealer will replace the power window master switch and INSPECT THE WIRING HARNESS FOR PROBLEMS, replacing it if necessary, for free. For additional questions or to get help locating a dealer, owners may contact American Honda Customer Support and Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138. This dealership only replaced the switch but did not inspect the wiring or wiring harness in detail for issues that certainly could have occurred due to this safety recall. I still wonder from time to time while driving if the wiring will short causing a fire and explained this to the Honda dealership. I have followed up with Honda of America to report this issue which is currently being investigated by a case worker. (Incident #: [XXX]) I believe the dealership was not interested in resolving my safety concerns regarding this matter. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-23
  • VIN: JHLRD78845C
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My driver power window switch melted and failed in the same way described in the current recall for the same model and year vehicle, just not under the SHS vin numbers that are covered. I suspect this recall should cover more cars than previously thought. I noticed this problem after heavy rains, first my windows stopped rolling up and down, then I began noticed a burring/melting plastic smell coming from the drivers door. I took the door apart and tracked the smell down to the power master switch. After inspecting the switch, it was indeed the switch that melted on the circuit board. It seems to have damaged the driver wiring door harness as well, also like the current recall states. All just as described in the current safety recall which I have attached below. **Safety Recall: 2002-06 CR-V Driver’s Power Window Switch (Only VINs that start with SHS) ''under severe conditions, water or other liquid may enter the driver’s window and reach the power window master switch on the door panel. Liquid in the switch can damage the switch’s printed circuit board (PCB), causing the switch to fail. In rare cases, the damaged PCB creates a short circuit that overheats the switch connectors and melts them, leading to a possible fire.'' All affected vehicles, even those previously repaired under S/B 12-067, must have the driver's power window switch replaced under the current recall.

Negative 2005 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Pierre Pfannerstill 2024-08-16

I bought my Pewter Pearl SE on 2/14 from a dealership with only 24 miles on it. Unfortunately, the next morning I noticed a puddle on my driveway. I took it to the repair shop and they replaced the power steering reservoir and hoses. The following day, I noticed a smaller puddle, this time it was oil. It turns out there was a faulty seal. As of 2/17, the car is still in the shop. Despite the issues, I have enjoyed driving the car from my house to the service center. It is comfortable and handles well. My wife also loves the spacious interior and the smooth ride. Although the dealer will not replace the car, I am considering trading in my CRV SE with 100 miles on it. Overall, this has been a frustrating experience, but I am hopeful for a positive outcome.

  2. Fern Collier 2024-07-22

Like many others, I too have been a victim of the A/C compressor defect. My 2005 CR-V experienced its first compressor failure at just 56,000 miles. Despite purchasing the vehicle new from Coral Springs Auto Mall in 08/05, the A/C system failed to blow cold air in 05/08. The dealer informed me that the compressor had 'exploded' and caused damage to the entire system, requiring replacement of hoses and other components at a cost of $3200. As a single mother, this was a significant financial burden. However, I sought a second opinion from my trusted personal mechanic, who identified that the compressor had 'locked up' and demonstrated the issue to me. He was able to fix the problem for $1300, providing me with a more affordable solution.

  3. Orlo Jaskolski 2024-07-14

I owned a 2000 CRV-SE for 4.5 years and decided to trade it for one of the first 2005 models off the line. Looking back, I regret trading in my 2000 model. While the car promised good gas mileage, it never quite lived up to the sticker and was actually worse than the 2000 model. Unfortunately, the car is also plagued with rattles that the dealer has been unable to fix, making for a less than ideal ride. However, I do appreciate the XM radio and heated seats, as well as the radio controls mounted on the steering wheel. It's worth noting that the sales brochure is a bit misleading when it says the car is

  4. Norval Adams 2024-07-08

Your car seems to be performing below the expected fuel economy, which can be frustrating. However, it's great to hear that you are generally pleased with your CR-V. It's impressive that it has such a large cargo space for its size, even bigger than your Lexus SUV when the rear seats are down.

  5. Shawn Schneider 2024-07-07

I've had my V (#Four off the line) for just over a year now. I got it with 65k miles on the clock, so it wasn't even broken in yet. Unfortunately, I had some trouble with the VTEC switch after only 90 miles, which cost me $300 to fix. Since then, I've had a few other issues, like two sets of brakes, two VTEC switches, three sets of spark plugs, a set of coil packs (which cost $90 each!), a fuel pump, and a new lower control arm. It seems like all the little things that can go wrong have gone wrong. In the past year, I've spent a little over $2,000 on the Accord that wanted to be an SUV. Suffice it to say, I've been considering some drastic measures, like setting it on fire.

Positive 2005 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Torrance Altenwerth 2025-01-01

The Honda CR-V of 2005 is an exceptional SUV that boasts quality and traction control, surpassing even the Jeep Wrangler. I have personally owned this car since college and have been impressed with its durability and reliability. While my friends have spent thousands of dollars on parts and labor to maintain their cars, I have only spent around $3000 in repairs over the past 2 years (mostly due to the rough terrain of Colorado's rocky roads). Since then, I have only needed regular servicing. This car can handle tough conditions and keep on rolling.

  2. Hans Rowe 2024-11-26

Good choice if you have one child and occasionally have visiting family. The gas mileage is decent for its class. It doesn't feel like I am driving an SUV, it handles like a car.

  3. Amari Luettgen 2024-09-03

I bought my CR-V just 5 months ago, so I won't be able to speak to its longevity. However, I can say that I've put 6,000 miles on it since then and have experienced no mechanical problems. I drive an average of 70 miles a day, and I find the driver's seat to be comfortable even on long drives. I have a 75lb dog who has plenty of space to sit, stand, walk, lay down, look out the window, and stretch in the back with the seats folded up. Despite all that space, I still get an impressive 25-27 mpg, with only a third of my driving being on the highway. I've had no complaints from passengers, even when the car is full. Overall, I think this vehicle is an incredible value. In fact, I wish I had bought it as my first car instead of my second. I absolutely love it!

  4. Clement Lockman 2024-08-27

My wife and I, without any kids, bought this vehicle for our frequent outdoor trips. We were pleasantly surprised by its performance during a 2.5 week blizzard and on icy roads. The AWD worked great and kept us safe. We then embarked on a 1,300 mile journey along the western coast, through the deserts into CO, and eventually drove another 1,200 miles with a 4x8 trailer to the south eastern US. We spent countless hours in this vehicle and even used it to drag a trailer across the entire US, from OR to CO to AL. We absolutely love this vehicle and have no complaints whatsoever.

  5. Ezequiel West 2024-08-26

I'm glad to hear that you were not injured despite the hard side-impact collision you experienced on 7/30/08, where your car was unfortunately totaled. It's great to know that you value safety and that you are considering purchasing another CR-V for the same reason.
