The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2009 Honda Civic hybrid problems

The Honda Civic Hybrid, produced between 2001 and 2015, has had its fair share of issues, particularly with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) and the hybrid battery.

In the early years of the Civic Hybrid, from 2001 to 2005, the CVT was a significant problem. Transmission issues can manifest as delays in deceleration or acceleration, irritating grinding or humming noises, slipping out of gear, shakes and vibrations, or a burning smell. These problems can affect the performance and safety of the car and may require expensive repairs or replacements.

From 2006 onwards, unreliable batteries became a recurring problem with the Honda Civic Hybrid. The hybrid battery lifespan is variable depending on how much use the car has, but cars from these years are notorious for having a shorter-than-expected battery life. Owners of the 2009 model also complained of tyres wearing out earlier than expected.

The 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid hybrid battery is prone to deterioration and failure over time, especially if the car is driven in frequent stop-and-go traffic with the air conditioning on. This can cause reduced fuel economy, loss of power, and warning lights on the dashboard. Some owners have reported that their hybrid battery failed prematurely, even after receiving a software update from Honda that was supposed to extend its life. The hybrid battery replacement can cost thousands of dollars unless a warranty or a settlement agreement covers it.

In addition to transmission and battery problems, the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid also has issues with the regenerative braking system, which can cause intermittent hitching, delayed braking response, pedal vibration, or brake failure. These issues can compromise the braking ability of the car and increase the risk of accidents.

The 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid also has electrical system problems, such as dashboard warning lights and charging system issues. The car does not have a conventional alternator to charge the 12-volt battery. Instead, it uses an integrated motor assist (IMA) system that consists of an electric motor/generator and a power control unit (PCU). If there is a problem with the IMA system or the PCU, the charging system may not work properly, resulting in a dead or weak 12-volt battery. This can cause various electrical problems in the car, such as stalling, hard starting, dim lights, or accessory malfunctions.

Power window and door lock problems are also common in the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid. The car has power windows and door locks controlled by switches, and some owners have reported problems with these.

In conclusion, the Honda Civic Hybrid, particularly the 2006 to 2010 models, has had significant issues with the hybrid battery and the continuously variable transmission. These problems can affect the performance and safety of the car and may require expensive repairs or replacements. Additionally, the car has issues with the regenerative braking system, electrical system, and power windows and door locks, which can compromise the braking ability of the car and cause various electrical problems.

After replacing all of my tires at the dealership, my TPMS light kept coming on. I was unable to get back to the dealership as my spouse had a medical emergency. Today while I was doing an extended highway drive to reset the codes, around 105 miles in, my TPMS light popped on and then shut off. The tires were checked, all good, but my EVAP and Catalyst codes have not reset.

Honda's numbers for this recall are KE1 and KE2.
2016-05-24
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Acura TSX, 2011 TSX Wagon, 2010-2011 Acura ZDX, 2008-2011 Honda Accord, 2010-2011 Accord Crosstour, 2006-2011 Civic, Civic Hybrid, and Civic GX, 2007-2011 CR-V, 2010-2011 FCX Clarity and Insight, and 2009-2011 Fit, and Pilot vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless already included in "Zone A" above, Honda is recalling certain model year 2008 Honda Accord, 2006-2008 Civic, Civic Hybrid and Civic GX, and 2007-2008 CR-V vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Vehicles not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall is KA4, KA5, KA6, and KA7.
