The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.

First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)

The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.

The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2017 Porsche Cayenne problems

The 2017 Porsche Cayenne is a midsize luxury SUV that offers a range of strong engines, exquisite interior build quality, and plenty of customization options. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported with this model.

One of the most significant issues is related to the cooling system. The 2017 Porsche Cayenne has been known to have problems with plastic coolant lines breaking, which can lead to more severe issues such as the car refusing to start. This problem has been reported to cost upwards of $3,000 to repair in some instances.

Another issue that has been reported with the 2017 Porsche Cayenne is related to the drivetrain. The center carrier bearing of the driveshaft has been known to fail, which can cause significant problems with the vehicle's drivability. This issue has also been reported to be costly to repair, with costs varying between roughly $1,000 to $2,000.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the electrical system, such as issues with taillights and headlights caused by seals that allow water to enter the system. This issue has been reported to be more common in colder climates, where automatic car washes that use arms to clean the car can cause damage to the seals.

Another issue that has been reported with the 2017 Porsche Cayenne is related to the transfer case. This issue has been reported to be common and can be expensive to repair, with some owners reporting bills of up to $1,000 just for an oil change and filters.

Despite these issues, the 2017 Porsche Cayenne is generally considered to be a reliable vehicle. However, like all luxury vehicles, it can be expensive to maintain and repair. Owners are advised to keep aside a significant budget for regular maintenance and repairs, with some owners reporting that they set aside as much as $5,000 per year for this purpose.

It is also recommended that potential buyers look for a Cayenne that has been well-maintained, with a complete service history, particularly in relation to the transfer case and valve cover service. Buying a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) vehicle and adding an additional year to the warranty can also provide additional peace of mind for buyers.

In summary, while the 2017 Porsche Cayenne is a reliable vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Owners have reported issues with the cooling system, drivetrain, electrical system, and transfer case, which can be costly to repair. However, with regular maintenance and repairs, and by purchasing a well-maintained vehicle, these issues can be minimized.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
  • VIN: WP1AD2A23HL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Broken and loosened timing chain cover bolts resulting in leaking oil onto drive components, belts and tires/brakes. This recall was done for the Macan and not the Cayenne. Ours was covered under factory extended warranty. That said, this is criminal. Porsche needs to be investigated, they refuse to recall their vehicles and we all know there are some manufaturing issues that are 100% the factory's fault. If the NTSB refuses to hold their feet to the fire this type of engineering will continue.

Negative 2017 Porsche Cayenne car reviews

  1. Wellington Hodkiewicz 2024-11-02

This is the base model. Although the materials are plastic, the interior build quality is very good.

  2. Blaze Runolfsson 2024-09-13

I used to own an X5 4.4, and in my experience, the Cayenne doesn't quite match up in terms of handling and comfort. I personally don't think it's worth the money.

  3. Oren Bernier 2024-07-20

Hi there! I noticed that your car is making noise by a speaker and dripping a lot of water on the floor when plugged in overnight due to AC cooling the battery. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic to get it checked out? They might be able to help you fix these issues. Let me know if you need any further assistance!

  4. Tyshawn Fahey 2024-05-21

We recently repaired a 2016 Porsche that was purchased in the fall of 2015. While working on it, we noticed some design flaws that could be improved. For example, the battery is located under the seat and accessing the exhaust requires a lot of labor, including the removal of a body panel. Unfortunately, even a minor accident caused damage to the rear passenger seats bolt that secures them to the floor. However, we were surprised that the airbags did not go off in the accident. As a result, the total cost of the repairs was 4700.00. We recommend that you consider these factors before purchasing this vehicle. It is important to note that this car is part of the VW family, so we expected a higher level of quality. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

  5. Keagan Luettgen 2024-04-14

I recently ordered this car as I am a huge Porsche fan. However, I must say that I am disappointed with the infotainment system on this car (not SUV). The weather only shows large cities and not the current location, and there are no headlight washers, unlike the VW and Audi variants. Additionally, the traction system is not up to par as the car drives in rear-wheel drive until it slips. Furthermore, there is no center or rear locker on the diesel or hybrid, which is a weight-saving measure. The car was priced at 88K, and unfortunately, the dealer cannot offer me a deal on a different car due to the restrictions on diesel sales. As a result, I have decided to cancel my plans to upgrade my 2012 911 GTS. Thank you for your understanding.

Positive 2017 Porsche Cayenne car reviews

  1. Dallas Gerlach 2024-11-12

I have owned it now for 2 years and still enjoy driving it every day. As long as you keep it maintained, it still runs like a thoroughbred. Clients, friends and family still admire it and its timeless style. As someone who has a new car every 2 years, I can say there isn't anything out there that would make me happier and is as fun to drive yet still practical. So, I am keeping this car!

  2. Mackenzie Grant 2024-10-27

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your cpo Cayenne! It's great to know that you haven't had any issues with the car, except for the transfer case which was replaced under warranty. With 60,000 miles on the clock, it's fantastic that you've only had to pay for dealer maintenance and new tires. I hope you continue to enjoy your Cayenne on many more road trips to come!

  3. Marcelo Medhurst 2024-10-17

Love it! It's quick, very comfortable, and has great interior comforts. I love it! I changed from a turbo Panamera to this baby and I couldn't be happier! Love it!

  4. Julius Green 2024-10-11

Hey there! Before you make any decisions, why not check out Edmunds' prices first?

  5. Terrell Johnston 2024-09-25

The car drives really well, looks great, and the controls are easy to use. So far, I haven't encountered any issues.
