1999 Honda Civic problems
The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.
The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 1999 Honda Civic problems
The 1999 Honda Civic is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the engine, specifically a misfire in cylinder 1. This problem can manifest as a sputtering or lagging acceleration, which the owner in the search result tried to address by replacing the spark plugs. However, the issue persisted, indicating that the problem may be more complex than a faulty spark plug.
Another common problem with the 1999 Honda Civic is related to the car's immobilizer system. Before 2001, the Honda Civic was fitted with a red-key immobiliser system to protect against theft. A properly coded ignition key must be used for the engine to start. The red key is a learning key used for coding purposes only. Together with an existing ignition key, it enables new keys to be programmed to the engine's immobiliser system. If no ignition key is available, the immobiliser system cannot accept a new key, making it unserviceable. This can be a significant issue if the owner loses their keys and needs to replace them.
The 1999 Honda Civic's clever rear suspension is another area where problems can arise. While it's not likely to become faulty, it needs regular maintenance to maintain the Civic's superb handling. Additionally, a rotten rear exhaust section is a common problem that is easy to replace but can be expensive due to the high cost of Honda parts.
Another issue that can affect the 1999 Honda Civic is related to the engine's design. The engines are designed to be revved high, but many owners are too easy on the throttle. A few high revs now and again are good for the Civic's motors - they can become sluggish without it. This issue is not necessarily a mechanical problem but rather a driving habit that can affect the car's performance over time.
In summary, the 1999 Honda Civic is known for several common problems, including engine misfires, issues with the immobilizer system, maintenance requirements for the rear suspension, and the need for regular high-rev driving to maintain engine performance. While these issues can be frustrating for owners, regular maintenance and careful driving can help to mitigate many of these problems and ensure that the car remains reliable and enjoyable to drive.
Is Honda Civic 1999 a good car?
Excellent commuting car with good ride and gas mileage. Very reliable and I drove over 160k miles with no major issues. I had the manual transmission, providing a little bit more power and control. Surprisingly, this was a great car in the snow - never had any issues.
What is the common problem of Honda Civic?
Brakes. Some Civic owners have complained of squealing brakes; Honda is said to be aware of the problem and working on a fix, though it's worth keeping in mind that any Civic you test drive with noisy brakes may not be easy to fix.
What was a bad year for Honda Civic?
What Year Did the Honda Civic Have Engine Problems? The Honda Civic years 2001 – 2006 is a notorious batch of vehicles in the lineup with multiple engine and airbag issues. However, models from 2006 to 2008 and a few 2009 models had coolant issues such as leaks that could blow up your engine.
Can a Honda Civic last 20 years?
Read on, to get a clear idea. Honda Civics holds the capability to take you a long way down the road. With proper care and maintenance, Civics can last over 20+ years. To be more precise, it could take you 300,000 miles and even beyond.

- Summary: 3 out of 4 doors have stopped opening from the outside. The locks still work properly and have no effect on the outside door handles. The doors still open just fine from the inside, except for the driver door. The driver door will not open at all, which is a major safety issue and should have been recalled, especially since the door handles are well known issue for Hondas. Although the car does have minor damages to the body, the door handles have not been affected at all by them. This seems to be an issue that lies inside the door panel itself.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-21
- VIN: 1HGEJ8246XL
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: You listed this VIN as having an airbag recall repair pending. I setup an appointment at the dealer. They went through the motions of doing the replacement and gave me paperwork indicating they had serviced the recall, but I believe you had lied to me and they are lying to me about the recall. This VIN does not correspond to an airbag recall according to multiple other sources. I recently inspected the passenger airbag it definitely not new. That is what clued me to begin checking further. I don't believe they replaced the driver airbag either. In the mean time I had to take buses to and from the dealership, after work, at night, in the rain, in the middle of this Omicron Covid spike. You an the dealer endangered my health and I want to know why and who is responsible.

- VIN: 1HGEJ8642XL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: MY CAR HAS BEEN STALLING AND LOSING POWER WITHOUT ANY WARNING WHILE DRIVING, MOST OFTEN ON THE FREEWAY. AFTER SEVERAL TRIES IT STARTS BACK UP. THIS CREATES A POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATION. SOMEHOW, AS WITH MANY OTHER DRIVERS I HAVE RESEARCHED AND READ ABOUT, MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE 2002 RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH (FAULTY ELECTRICAL COMPONENT) INCLUDING HONDA CIVICS FROM 1999. NO OTHER REPAIRS SO FAR HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM. IF THIS IS INDEED THE PROBLEM, (THE IGNITION SWITCH) WE VERY STRONGLY FEEL (LIKE MANY OTHERS) THAT IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HONDA TO TAKE CARE OF THE REPLACEMENT.
1999 Honda Civic recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 15 recalls for different components of the 1999 Honda Civic.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

I drove my Civic DX away from the dealer in March 1999, and since then, we've been on quite the journey together. With 156K miles on the odometer, this car has been my trusty companion through thick and thin. Despite living her entire life in the frozen north (Michigan & Upstate New York) without the luxury of a garage, she has been carefully maintained and has never let me down. My daily commute runs between 70-80 miles, and my Civic has been more than up to the task. Apart from a slightly leaky water pump at 70k and the odd rusty muffler/tailpipe, there have been no repair issues outside the normal service schedule. (The clutch is original.) My Civic still delivers 35-40 mpg if driven rationally, and even with 4 snow tires, you can still expect a decent performance. Thank you, my dear Civic, for being such a reliable and loyal companion!

It sounds like you had a great experience with your first car in high school! It's amazing that it has been in your family since your dad bought it brand new. You really loved that car, didn't you? The vehicle is known for its reliability, and it seems like it lived up to that reputation for you. The seats were so plush and comfortable that you would choose them over cloth seating any day. Additionally, the gas mileage was quite impressive. It's understandable that you're not sure why you ever got rid of it!

I was in high school when this came out. I knew I had to have one. Finally, after 10 years, I got my hands on one. Let me tell you, all the waiting paid off. It's a fantastic little engine with great handling and a great interior. The electron blue pearl is just the cherry on top. I have been and will continue to be a Honda fan, thanks to this car.

This is an excellent car. Performance and reliability are well above par. Although the absence of torque is a disappointment, the horsepower more than makes up for it. It's very fun to drive and I've never had a big problem with it, even after over 60K miles.

Hey there! I loved reading about your first car! It sounds like you've had quite a bit of experience with cars, but this 99 Civic holds a special place in your heart. Even with a few problems, like the dash lights not working and the low ride height, it's still a great car. I can tell you really appreciate it. Thanks for sharing your story!

This was my first car, so I took great care of it. Although I have owned it for over 4 years, I have had to replace the AC and the radiator. The car has 146,000 miles on it, and while it may not be able to go another 100k, it has served me well. The automatic transmission sometimes shifts hard and doesn't shift at all, causing the RPM to rise until I decelerate. This can be a bit challenging when getting onto the interstate or trying to pass a car. The car may not be the most enjoyable to drive, as it can be noisy and bumpy, but it gets decent gas mileage at about 27 mixed. I usually have to put $45 in it every week. The car is black, which has faded a bit in the Florida sun, but it still looks good.

Hey there! Thanks for taking the time to read this. I just wanted to share my experience with my second vehicle, which I purchased from an individual who bought it new from the dealership. When I got the car in 2010, the guy handed me a grocery bag full of receipts from all of the maintenance he had to do while he owned it - which was a bit of a red flag. Since then, I've had to replace the exhaust manifold and the radiator, and unfortunately the air conditioner is broken and I'm not willing to pay $900 to fix it. I've also had to replace the spark plugs and wires twice, and it can sound pretty rough when I'm driving on the highway. However, I do drive it a lot and I've put about 40k miles on it, and the best part is that I get 35-40MPG! Thanks again for reading.

I had a great experience with my 87 Honda Civic for 11 years, so I decided to get another one. Unfortunately, this one has had some issues. It's been in the shop for the oxygen sensor since day one, and I've had to replace the transmission three times. Additionally, the air conditioning had to be replaced at 18,000 miles. It's been a bit of a hassle, but I'm hopeful that the issues will be resolved soon. Overall, I still have faith in Honda and their products.

Hx has poor hp. But after putting about $2000 into the engine, it runs pretty well. I've even beaten old and new Mustangs and old Z28s in it. The exterior needed some work, but for about $150, I had the trim painted like the Ex or Si. Other than that, I absolutely love the car.

I purchased this DX without test driving it because I had a great experience with my '91 DX. However, I found that Honda had completely changed the ergonomics. As someone who is 5'1
