Alfa romeo Stelvio 2018 problems
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (Type 949) is a car produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo since 2016. As a D-segment model it slots above the smaller Tonale model in the marque's SUV range. A large SUV, it was first revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, introduced by a 60" short film directed by Louis Sebastian Pane, and entered production at the Cassino Plant at the end of 2016. In 2018 it was Alfa Romeo's best-selling model, with roughly 43,000 sold that year.
The Stelvio uses FCA's Giorgio platform, shared with the D-segment Giulia saloon. The name Stelvio derives from the Stelvio Pass, Italy's highest mountain pass, noted for its 48 circuitous switchbacks.
Characteristics
The Stelvio uses the same Giorgio platform already used by the Giulia, but slightly modified and raised by 22 cm (8.7 in). The Stelvio also shares the same engines and most of the mechanics, including a carbon-fibre driveshaft. In addition, its track width has increased by 2.9 cm (1.1 in) in the rear and 5.4 cm (2.1 in) in the front. It has a boot capacity of 525 L (18.5 cu ft). The boot sill is aligned with the rear bumper and cargo does not need to be lifted over a lip when being removed. There are large vehicle blind spots behind the car's pillars. It has a 50/50 weight distribution and a drag coefficient of 0.32 (Cd). Euro NCAP classify it as a large off-road car.
In order to reduce the weight of the car, aluminium is used for body panels, as well as for mechanical parts such as the suspension, brakes, and engine. The suspension, called AlfaLink, implements double wishbones in the front, and an aluminium multi-link configuration in the rear. The springs are longer than those in the Giulia, but stiffer to account for the extra weight and ride height. The driver sits nearly 20 cm (7.9 in) higher from the road than in the Giulia. The suspension is tuned for improved handling and driving dynamics, which can compromise ride quality if optional larger-diameter wheels are fitted.
Rear-wheel drive as standard, the Stelvio can be optioned with an Alfa Romeo "Q4" all-wheel drive system, which can send up to 50% of power to the front in low-grip conditions. The Stelvio weighs 1,660 kg (3,660 lb) with all fluids, 145 kg (320 lb) less than an equivalent BMW X3 and 110 kg (243 lb) less than a four-cylinder Porsche Macan. The car's braking system is designed to be less-susceptible to brake fade, which can take time for unfamiliar drivers to get used to.
All models feature an 8.8-inch infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto as standard, while small tweaks have been made throughout the ranges.

- Summary: The engine has shut down in traffic on the following occasions: 1) July 2023 in The Woodlands, Texas. 2) Later that same day on [XXX] in Plantersville, Texas. 3) In August 2024, on [XXX] and 4) on [XXX] . My vehicle is available to the NHTSA upon request. On each occasion, except one, I was fortunate to be in the right hand lane and was able to pull over onto the shoulder before any could hit me. On [XXX] , near Richards, there was no shoulder and I was stopped within the single lane of westbound traffic. I was fortunate that traffic was light at that time and that it was daylight. After the first two incidents in 2023, I took it to Northside Imports in Spring, Texas (XXX) They were unable to duplicate the problem or determine what was the cause. On [XXX], I took the car back to Northside Imports and they determined that it needed a new fuel pump, seal and control module. (I was informed on Friday, [XXX] that the parts have been received and can be installed on [XXX].) Between the time that the fault was identified and the time the parts were available the car has failed on the highway twice, once on [XXX] and once on [XXX] . The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone but Northside Imports in Spring, Texas. There were no warnings in advance of the shutdown. I was able to restart the vehicle after a short period of time after disconnecting the battery. Each time, it restarted in "limp" mode. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-10
- VIN: ZASFAKPN6J7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I was in the process of merging on the the express way when my vehicle threw a warning light, "service electronic throttle control" along with a "service engine" message and a check engine light. The vehicle went into a "limp" and had extremely poor acceleration, I was almost rear ended because the vehicle couldn't reach highways speeds fast enough. The vehicle has not yet been inspected my the manufacturer but I did some research on this issue and found it to be alarmingly common. There seems to be no clear answer to the reason for this and no sure repairs for the problem. This poses a safety risk to drivers as this problem seems to happen while accelerating. It can be dangerous if someone on the expressway is attempting to merge into 60mph traffic and hit "limp mode" at roughly 30. I believe an investigation need to be conducted regarding this followed by a recall of the affected part.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31
- VIN: ZASFAKNNXJ7

- VIN: ZASFAKAN2J7
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I have had several incidents with my Alfa Romero Stelvio losing power while driving, This problem has been going on for quite some time, i have had several parts changed out with the same results a few weeks or months later. I took the vehicle to Jim Ellis Alfa Romero for repairs and told them the vehicle was losing power while driving and was told that this problem has occurred on several Stelvios. I left my car with Jim Ellis and a few days later I was told all was good. I didn’t even get a mile away before I loss power again. I brought it back to Jim Ellis and left it again and a few hours later they called and said that the Stelvio needed a new turbocharger that would be $4000 plus installation fees. How is this possible if you told me you had taken care of the issue, and the car didn't even make it a mile.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
- VIN: ZASFAKBNXJ7
- Components: STRUCTURE

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-19
- VIN: ZASFAKPN3J7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Please see the following reoccurring problems with the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Auto on/off failure has failed 3 times resulting in the check engine light coming on and the vehicle citing service engine. Additionally, the DNA selector doesn’t work when this occurs. The vehicle has been inspected by Southern Alfa Romeo of Norfolk. However, the system reset itself before they inspected. As such they found no evidence of failure. However, within a week the system is back in fault mode rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive. I’ve noticed on several blogs that others owners are having the same problems with no relief from their service provider. Request a NHTSA review of this problem with a solution for correction. Thank you!!!
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
- VIN: ZASFAKAN7J7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: In December of 2023, the Ground cable/front body harness was melted due to the main battery ground cable from the transmission to the body being corroded and broken. This could have potentially caused car to catch fire. There was no warning light, the car simply refused to start and I could smell something burn. The car is barely 5 years old and driven for 50k miles. The car was last serviced in September/October of 2023 (where this strap issue was not identified, since this is something that is not serviced or expected to break) and has been in no accidents. I strongly believe that this is a faulty piece that alfa Romeo stelvios of that year have. I have heard of atleast 2 other stelvios with the same issue (after a simple google search on forums), however have really never experienced this issue in any other cars I have owned or known off- specially within the first 4-5 years. When I contacted Alfa, I was told that I am out of warranty, so they cannot help me. However, I wanted to raise this safety concern with them and requested if I could talk to anyone else and that request was denied. I am not reporting this because of I want reimbursement of the cost, but primarily so Alfa can investigate and perform a recall as a corrective action.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-29
- VIN: ZASFAKEV8J7
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While I was driving the car suddenly stopped sending gas when pressing the gas pedal and put the can a neutral mode. This was the second time this happened. Luckily the first time I was in my neighborhood going slow. The second time was in the middle of the night pitch black on a busy road. I was stranding the middle of the road and almost got hit. I was so fortunate a cop was driving by an helped. This has been extremely unsettling as I have a 1 year old. Luckily he was in the car but I can’t imagine if I was driving with him on a highway. The first time this happened I went to the gas station to fill a gas station to fill up a gas tank and added it my car. The car said I had a quarter tank when it stalled, but when I added the gas I was nearly empty. I was able to drive it to Alfa and they said I didn’t need a need a new fuel pump but don’t run it under 1/4 tank. I bought the car with 30k miles and apparently the fuel pump was already replaced under warranty. The second time this happened was in Dec 2023 and my car won’t get looked at until Jan 30th, 2024. I read up and there are other complaints of the same issue. This has to be corrected or someone will secretly injured. I’m scared to drive the car and will ultimately sell it because it is NOT safe.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-19
- VIN: ZASFAKPN7J7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Was driving home with my fourteen year old daughter and started to smell a burning smell and began to lose power in the vehicle. Warning light came on that oil level was low. Pulled over as safely as I could on a busy four lane road and opened the hood and saw engine oil and coolant mixed and sprayed all over the engine. Car had never leaked any type of fluids prior to this incident. Had the car towed to one repair shop and was told it would need a new engine. Had it towed to an Alfa Romeo dealer two hours away and was told it needed a new engine too. Initial quote from dealer for a new engine and labor was $22,000. This car is barely worth $20,000. Third party warranty (I bought car used from a dealer) will only pay for gaskets. After weeks of warranty company asking for tear downs of engine and other things, price has risen to $35,000! While reasearching engine malfunctions on Alfa Romeo Stelvios, I have come across many people with similar sitations as mine. Engine replacements at 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 miles. My car has 39,000 miles. This should never happen to car with such low mileage. Called Alfa Romeo customer care and was told that previous owner was not compliant with maintenance and warranty was voided. How do they know that for sure? Just because you don't get your vehicle serviced at the dealership, your noncompliant? I believe that this needs to be looked at from a safety perspective that Alfa Romeo is not doing. During loss of power on busy road and only being able to go 10 mph, we could have easily been rear ended. This total abuse of negligence from Alfa Romeo to recall these engines and fix them, to the warranty company not paying for the engine replacement/repairs, and to the dealer that is charging this extreme amount of money for this. Car insurance will not pay for this as this is mechanical and was not involved in a collision.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
- VIN: ZASFAKBN0J7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When attempting to start the car using the push-button on the steering wheel, the engine did not crank and several system alerts were visible on the display (no warnings prior to this). Smoke began billowing from under the hood and left-front wheel arch after a few seconds. It was towed to the shop, the problem reproduced, and found to have a corroded main grounding wire going from the transmission to the frame. It is clear that the ground wire, which is not insulated or covered in any way, was not sufficiently grounding the electrical systems. Thus, the path of least resistance was the smaller gauge wiring in the electrical harness to include the ABS and starting/charging circuits which melted under the higher load. The extent of the damage is still being evaluated at the repair facility. This defect in the electrical circuitry could, at worst, have caused a fire, but thankfully just left us stranded. It is believed this problem could occur even while driving creating a serious condition and potential for an accident or injury.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-02
- VIN: ZASFAKPN1J7
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Driving on highway lost full power of engine. Throttle body control message came on . Then steering wheel started to stiffen up . Terrible experience and scary lucky was able to gain control on vehicle and pullover . Reading reviews after getting this vehicle 2 years later that it’s common in most car of this make and very unsafe . Dealer doesn’t help and warranty is crap leaving you going to the dealer several times spending dollars on the same safety issue .
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-22
- VIN: ZASFAKBN6J7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine blew at a bit over 40000 miles. There were regular oil changes and service done. The car of this quality and price should never have the engine blown at this amount of miles. It happened right after oil change and inspection, which confirmed everything was fine with the vehicle.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-21
- VIN: ZASFAKBN8J7
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle stalled loss power on highway while driving 70mph almost got rear ended. Was able to exit highway and park vehicle. Shut it off for 10 minutes started back up put in reverse car would move at all put it in drive still wouldn’t move. This is very dangerous I couldn’t have been killed. Check engine light came on and stayed on. Stop/Start stated unavailable and service engine soon
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-09
- VIN: ZASFAKNN2J7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The car will shut off in traffic out of no where. While driving the cars speed randomly will decrease to 15 miles and hour on the interstate almost causing a crash. When the cars speeds decreases randomly it does not all you to accelerate. Therefore the car is just going 15 miles an hour on a highway of no less than 65 miles. This has happened multiple times in the last 2 months. I see there was a recall of the same vehicles for the same issue a few years ago but this vehicle wasn’t listed yet it is experiencing the same issues. Have spent countless dollars and the problem is still not fixed
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-04-15
- VIN: ZASFAKEV7J7
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My car has had numerous issues/errors and drivabilty concerns over the last 3 years with the automatic torque vectoring (ATV) system. The vehicle has unstable/unusual driving when the system is malfunctioning and the system does not store any error codes when the car is turned off. The vehicle has been to 2 different dealers more than 6 times and they are unable to find the root cause. I have to drive straight to a dealer to have the codes read as soon as there is a malfunction because it all gets erased when the car is shut off. This is a safety issue that the manufacturer cannot figure out how to fix on my car.

I absolutely love this vehicle! Over the years, I've had many cars that I enjoyed, but none of them were particularly inspiring. However, with the Stelvio, I find myself looking for reasons to go for a drive. It's effortlessly sporty, quick to accelerate off the line and passing, yet still smooth, quiet, and comfortable. The feature set in the Stelvio is perfect for me, with automatic wipers and 3 memory slots for the driver's seat. It has more bells and whistles than my '15 Wrangler Sahara, but more importantly, the ones that make the most sense. Sitting in this car is a joy, and driving it is even better. And don't even get me started on how in love I am with its looks - it's a real head-turner! I can't even begin to imagine what the Quadrifoglio level is capable of!

I recently drove just over 1000 miles in my new Stelvio and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed! As an owner of a 2014 X5 and XC60, I can confidently say that the Stelvio is much more fun to drive than the BMW. The simple and logical controls make it a breeze to navigate, and the interior aesthetics are simply stunning. Although I was initially concerned about the perceived reliability and quality, I am happy to report that I have experienced no issues so far. The only minor complaint I have is that the voice commands don't work as well, but that could just be me needing to brush up on my Italian! While the infotainment system may be slower to respond than the BMW, the sheer entertainment value of driving the Stelvio more than makes up for it. Plus, it's nice to have a unique car that stands out from the sea of German and Japanese models out there. While exclusivity wasn't a factor in my purchase decision, it's definitely a nice bonus not to have the 8th Q5 in the parking lot!

If you're after a no-fuss vehicle, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio may not be for you. However, if you're looking for a stylish and high-performing option, this vehicle is definitely worth considering. The 8-speed automatic transmission makes it quick and responsive in urban areas, and its impressive appearance is sure to turn heads. If you're willing to invest, the Quadrofoglio is an excellent choice, boasting over 500 HP and currently holding the title of fastest SUV on the road.

I'm happy to share my thoughts on this car! I completely agree with the other reviews on the site that the ride is what sets this car apart from any other I've driven. It's super fun, fast, and responsive. I'm currently leasing, but I'm seriously considering buying it because I love it so much. While it's true that the technology could be improved - the video screen and navigation can be a bit slow - I think it's important to weigh what matters most to you. Overall, this car is perfect for me - it's fun, adventurous, and has plenty of room for me, my friends, and even my furry companions (although I don't have any kids).

If you love driving and are into cars, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is definitely worth considering. As someone who has owned BMWs in the past, I can confidently say that the Stelvio compares favorably to any of them. The power delivery is amazing and everything is tuned just right. I purchased a preowned Stelvio and have been very satisfied with my purchase. After driving it for over 20k miles in 2+ years, I can say that it has been nothing but mechanically reliable and always a pleasure to drive. Although I did have to change the brakes about 10k miles ago, this is in line with other luxury car makers like BMW or Mercedes Benz. The only other spend has been maintenance as per schedule. One thing to note is that the infotainment head unit had some issues, but this has now been resolved. Overall, I would strongly recommend the Stelvio as a driver's car.

The car is fast and handles great. If you have the sport seats, it is comfy. However, I must admit that I found the interior, controls and options to be a bit disappointing. The navigation system is not very user-friendly and some of the features seem to have a mind of their own. In my opinion, there are other cars on the market that offer better value for money. I also had a couple of unfortunate incidents with the windshield cracking, which was frustrating. Overall, I have to say that buying this car was not the best decision I've made in my 63 years. However, I hope that my experience can help others make a more informed decision.

The 2018 Stelvio is a stunning SUV that's an absolute joy to drive. Unfortunately, there have been several recalls since it was purchased new in 2018. Over the weekend, the car went into limp mode and had to be towed back to the dealer. We were just informed that two of the four cylinders have no compression and that a new engine will be required.

My 2018 Stelvio has been in the shop for 10 weeks due to an electrical problem that has persisted despite being brought back 3 times. Despite contacting Alfa Care, I was disappointed to receive no response. The shop informed me that they were unable to obtain the necessary part. It is concerning that a car company is unable to provide parts for its own vehicles. As a result of this experience, I have decided to switch to Mercedes and Porsche, which have a reputation for reliability and excellent customer service.
