The Infiniti QX70, formerly called the Infiniti FX until 2013, is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by the Nissan-owned Infiniti luxury vehicle brand between 2002 and 2017. The FX replaced the QX4 as Infiniti's mid-size SUV. It shares the same FM platform as the rear-wheel drive Nissan 370Z, and it "made no claims of climbing mountains." Rather, its aggressive shape promised style and quick handling. The similarly sized Nissan Murano is based on the same D platform as the front-wheel drive Nissan Altima. The FX does not have a Nissan-branded equivalent and is not sold in Japan.

The FX introduced its second generation for the 2009 model year as the FX35 and FX50.

First generation (S50; 2003)

The nameplates FX35 and FX45 refer to the two available engines. The FX35 is available in two drivetrains, the RWD and the AWD, which are both fitted to a dual overhead cam 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 VQ35DE gasoline engine, with aluminum-alloy block and heads, electronically controlled throttle system, and low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons that makes use of the continuous variable valve timing which in part optimizes the opening of intake valves. This is also coupled with an electronically controlled super-wide ratio five-speed automatic with a manumatic shift mode that includes the option of sequentially selected manual gearshifts and downshift rev-matching.

The AWD FX45 incorporates a 4.5 L (4,494 cc) 32-valve V8 DOHC VK45DE gasoline engine with four valves per cylinder, microfinished camshafts with aluminum-alloy block and heads, low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons, titanium intake and exhaust valves, modular cylinder heads, microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons, super-silent single stage cam drive chain, and a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System that optimizes opening of intake valves. Development began in 1999 under newly appointed CEO Carlos Ghosn's NRP. Design work was completed in rapid succession in 2000, for late 2002 production. Designed prior to that, earlier on in 2000 under the "Bionic Cheetah" theme, the 2001 Infiniti FX45 Concept was introduced at the NAIAS in January 2001. From mid-2001, a new concept based on the production design was developed and completed in late 2001. Sketches were first released in late November 2001. The second-generation 2002 FX45 Concept was introduced in January 2002 at the NAIAS '02 as a thinly-veiled production FX (S50) and planned production was announced for early 2003. In January 2003, the 2003 FX45 made its debut at the 2003 NAIAS and went on sale January 24, 2003.

In 2003 for the 2004 model, changes were the addition of a standard eight-way power front passenger seat that replaced the previous four-way design, the availability of aluminum roof rails and chrome-plated 20-inch wheels. Also new were a dark silver metallic finish for the 20-inch wheels (non-chrome-plated), the addition of a standard HVAC filter for all models and the addition of a new Snow-Mode function.

In September 2004 for the 2005 model year, the FX range received enhancements such as a lane departure warning (LDW) system that helps alert drivers to an unintended movement of the vehicle out of a designated traffic lane. Infiniti's system monitored the lane markings to alert passengers via an audible buzzer that the driver is drifting unintentionally. The LDW system, which utilizes a small camera, speed sensor, an indicator, and an audible warning buzzer, was offered on models. The 2005 Infiniti FX was the first passenger vehicle to offer a lane departure warning system in the United States market. In addition to LDW, the 2005 Infiniti FX range was now equipped with standard roof-mounted curtain supplemental curtain airbags with rollover protection for front and rear outboard seat occupants.

Other changes included the addition of a dark chrome grille, headlight, and clear taillight accents to the FX45 (also available as part of the V6 Sport Package on FX35 models), a new key fob design for the Infiniti Intelligent Key system, and two new exterior colors, Sapphire and Sheer Platinum. Interior changes included a new standard etched aluminum trim.

Total 2007 sales of the FX45 were 1,598 units, about a tenth of the FX35s.

Common 2012 Infiniti Fx35 problems

The 2012 Infiniti FX35 has a reputation for reliability, with above-average reliability scores and the potential to last over 200,000 miles with proper maintenance. However, like any vehicle, it can develop specific problems. Here are the most common issues reported by owners of the 2012 Infiniti FX35, based on the search results:

  • Prematurely Worn-out Wheel Bearings: One of the most widely reported problems with the 2003-2012 Infiniti FX35 is its front wheel bearings, which are prone to sustaining premature wear and damage. The worn-out wheel bearings may cause an abnormal grinding noise at the front of your SUV at around 94,000 miles. Some owners have reported that the noise would start while accelerating. According to reports, the only way to resolve this issue is to replace the bad wheel bearings. Replacement costs may vary, depending on different part and labor rates.
  • Fuel Leaks Due to Fuel Filler Hose Defect: The 2003-2010 Infiniti FX35 is prone to developing fuel leaks because of a defective fuel filler hose. The faulty fuel filler hoses may easily develop cracks, which can cause fuel leaks while refueling.
  • Erratic Idling: Some owners of the 2012 Infiniti FX35 have reported issues with erratic idling, where the engine would stall or hesitate while idling, especially when the vehicle is cold.
  • Airbag Problems: There have been reports of airbag problems in the 2012 Infiniti FX35, where the airbags may not deploy in an accident or may deploy unexpectedly.
  • Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported transmission problems, where the transmission may shift roughly or hesitate, especially during quick acceleration.
  • AC Odor: After six months of ownership, some owners have reported a foul smell from the AC upon start-up, which may require turning off the AC for a few seconds every time the vehicle is parked to prevent the smell from becoming permanent.

While these problems can be frustrating for owners, it's important to note that the 2012 Infiniti FX35 has above-average reliability scores and can last a long time with proper maintenance. If you're considering purchasing a used 2012 Infiniti FX35, it's essential to research the specific model year and check for any common issues before making a purchase.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-18
  • VIN: JN8AS1MU0CM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL NEEDED ON INFINITI FX35 2012. I WAS IN MOTION, DRIVING 75 MPH ON THE FREEWAY. A PIECE OF DEBRIS BOUNCED OFF OF A CAR IN MY LEFT LANE AND FLEW UNDERNEATH MY CAR. BANG! MY AIRBAGS EJECTED AND SLAMMED MY FACE HARD. MY WHOLE FRONT WINDSHIELD BLEW WHITE. I COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING IN FRONT OF ME. TRYING TO PUSH THE AIRBAG DOWN WITH ONE HAND, WHILE STEERING WITH THE OTHER HAND AT THE SAME TIME, I WAS ESSENTIALLY DRIVING BLIND ON THE FREEWAY WITH SPEEDING CARS ALL AROUND ME. ON TOP OF THAT I COULDN'T MOVE, BECAUSE THE SEATBELTS LOCKED ME. IT'S A WONDER I DIDN'T SLAM ON THE BREAKS, OR SWERVE INTO THE OTHER LANES, A PERFECTLY NATURAL REACTION. I USED MY PERIPHERAL VISION TO MOVE INTO THE SLOWER LANES TO THE RIGHT OF ME. THE LAST LANE ENDED UP BEING THE EXIT LANE. WHEN THE FOUR OF US GOT OUT TO EXAMINE WHAT WE THOUGHT WOULD BE A HUGE DENT, WE WERE SHOCKED. THE CAR LOOKED PERFECT. NO COLLISION. NO DAMAGE. IT WAS THE AIRBAGS. HAD WE BEEN INJURED OR WORSE YET, KILLED IN A CRASH THAT DAY (NOT TO MENTION ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE SURROUNDING CARS) WE WOULD NEVER HAVE ASCERTAINED THAT IT WAS AS A RESULT OF THE FAULTY AIRBAG SENSOR. IT HAPPENED SO QUICKLY THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN WHAT HAD COME FIRST - THE ACCIDENT OR THE AIRBAGS.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-11
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: JN8AS1MW4CM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL. I WAS DRIVING MY FX35 2012 INFINITI AND THE AIRBAG SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED AND EXPLODED. I DID NOT HIT ANY CAR OR OBJECT, THIS WAS NOT DUE TO AN ACCIDENT.... JUST A DEPLOYMENT. IT WAS A LARGE BOOM, LOUD EXPLOSION, SMELL OF A STRONG GUN POWDER ODOR THAT BURNS YOUR EYES. THE AIRBAG WAS TORN. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS HAPPENED AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN A SUBURB STREET, NO MORE THAN 35 MPH. I STOPPED THE CAR RIGHT IN THE LANE AS I WAS IN SHOCK ....SEEING NO OBSTRUCTION I PULLED INTO THE GAS STATION A FEW YARDS UP. LOUD

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-18
  • VIN: JN8AS1MU0CM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE LANE ON A FIVE LANE FREEWAY, A PIECE OF DEBRIS (ABOUT 1X2 FT) WAS BOUNCING FROM LANE TO LANE. IT BOUNCED INTO MY LANE AND WENT UNDER MY 2012 INFINITE FX35. I HEARD A LOUD BANG AND MY AIRBAGS EJECTED OPEN. MY WHOLE FRONT WINDSHIELD BLEW WHITE, LEAVING ME UNABLE TO SEE THE ROAD. ESSENTIALLY, I WAS DRIVING BLINDLY AT HIGHWAY SPEED ON THE FREEWAY WITH MOVING CARS ALL AROUND ME. IT'S A WONDER I DIDN'T SLAM ON MY BRAKES, SWERVE OR PLOW INTO THE CARS THAT I WAS BEHIND, IN FRONT OF, OR TO THE SIDE OF ME ON THE FREEWAY. TO THINK ABOUT THE CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES! WHITED OUT FRONT WINDOW, LARGE IMPEDING AIRBAG IN MY FACE, BUT MIRACULOUSLY, I MANAGED TO SAFELY MANEUVER ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC! THE LAST LANE TURNED OUT TO BE THE EXIT OFF THE FREEWAY, WHERE THERE WAS A GAS STATION. WHEN WE STOPPED THERE, MY THREE PASSENGERS AND I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND IMMEDIATELY WALKED AROUND IT, LOOKING TO SEE WHAT DAMAGE WAS VISIBLE ON MY INFINITI. IT LOOKED PERFECT: NO SIGNS OF EXTERNAL DAMAGE WHATSOEVER. NO COLLISION. NO DAMAGE. A DEFECTIVE AND HYPERSENSITIVE SENSOR IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO. WAS THIS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT? OR IS THIS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AN INFINITI RECALL? THE EVENTS IN MY CASE HAPPENED SO QUICKLY THAT HAD WE HAD AN ACCIDENT, I WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN WHAT HAD COME FIRST, THE ACCIDENT, OR THE AIRBAG. MY AUTO INSURANCE COMPANY WAS SHOCKED THAT THIS OCCURRED WHEN THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE TO THE OUTSIDE OF MY INFINITI. THE INTERIOR HOWEVER, WAS ANOTHER THING ALTOGETHER ' THE AIRBAGS, THE DASHBOARD, THE COMPUTER SYSTEM, THE SEAT BELTS, ETC., IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE. THEY DECIDED TO DO A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION. THEIR CONCLUSION? MY INFINITI DEEMED "TOTALED" WAS ZERO MY FAULT.

  • VIN: JN8AS1MW2CM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I REPORTED MY VEHICLE IS A WHINING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I TOOK IT IN FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME THAT NO CODES WERE DETECTED; HOWEVER BELIEVES IT IS THE ALTERNATOR. THE CAR HAS 39K MILES. AS A PREVIOUS OWNER OF A 2011 INFINITI, I BELIEVE THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT AS I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND DRIVEN IT FOR LESS THAN 6K. I INITIATED A CLAIM WITH NALLEY CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO NO AVAIL; THE REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT THERE IS NO LISTING OF WHAT IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. CLAIM # 28141832. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-08-29
  • VIN: JN8AS1MW4CM
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 2012 INFINITI FX-35 FUEL GAUGE STOPPED REGISTERING FUEL LEVELS ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO, AND THE WARRANTY EXPIRED THREE MONTHS AGO. I NOTICED THE ISSUE WHEN STARTING THE CAR IN MY GARAGE. I CONTACTED THE INFINITI DEALER, AND THEY MENTIONED THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR WHICH WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY INVOLVES THE FUEL SENDING UNITS, NISSAN PN 25060-1CB0C AND 25060-1CB1C, WHICH RETAIL AT APPROXIMATELY $130.00 EACH. PARTS AND LABOR ARE IN EXCESS OF $600.00. I LOOKED UP SOME PAST NHTSA BULLETINS INVOLVING NISSAN FUEL SENDING UNITS AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING NHTSA BULLETINS: 10V-074, 10V-075. ALL NISSAN VEHICLES, INCLUDING INFINITI, UTILIZE THE SAME DESIGN FOR THEIR FUEL SENDING UNITS, WHICH INVOLVE A FLOATING ARM WITH CONTACTS THAT SWEEP ACROSS A CONTACT ARRAY TO REGISTER E-F. I CONTACTED INFINITI CUSTOMER CARE WHO INFORMED ME THAT THEY COULD NOT OFFER ANY COMPENSATION TOWARD FIXING THE PROBLEM. I THEN LOCATED A YOUTUBE VIDEO THAT SHOWED THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE CONTACT ARRAY THAT BECOMES OXIDIZED AFTER A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME. I THEN FIXED MY PROBLEM BY REMOVING BOTH FUEL SENDING UNITS FROM THE GAS TANK, AND CLEANING THE CONTACT ARRAY ON EACH USING A COTTON SWAB. THIS IS CLEARLY A FAULTY DESIGN, AND NISSAN SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL FOR ALL MAKES/MODELS....01/04/17 *BF *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-07-21
  • VIN: JN8AS1MU8CM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AT ABOUT 15/20 MILES AN HOUR AS THE LIGHT HAD JUST TURNED GREEN & MY CAR JUST SHUT DOWN OUT OF NO WHERE ALL THE LIGHTS WERE ON ON THE DASH, AND THE CAR ROLLED TO A STOP. I TURNED THE EMERGENCY LIGHTS ON. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND HIT THE START BUTTON AGAIN & THE CAR STARTED WITH NO ISSUES. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME IT HAS HAPPEN THE SAME WAY. LUCKILY THE OTHER 2 TIMES I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AND THE VEHICLE JUST SHUTS DOWN WHILE ACCELERATING & IN DRIVE MODE. THERE ARE NO WARNING LIGHTS ON MY VEHICLE FOR MAINTENANCE. READING ABOUT THIS ONLINE IT APPARENTLY HAPPENS A LOT & TO SOME PEOPLE ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 70 MPH. THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS!

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-25
  • VIN: JN8AS1MWXCM
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: INCIDENT HAPPENED ABOUT 9AM WITH TEMPERATURES IN LOW 30SF. AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF PARKING LOT,I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE GLASS TINKERING. IT GOT COLDER/MORE WINDY IN CAR & MORE LIGHT COMING FROM MOONROOF AREA. ABOUT 1/2MILE LATER AS I MAKE LEFT TURN I NOTICED WHAT LOOKED LIKE SMALL DARK CRYSTALS FLYING OFF TOP OF TRUNK AREA. I PULLED OVER, GOT & CHECKED BACK OF CAR. WHEN I WENT TO FRONT OF CAR, I ALSO DIDN'T NOTICE ANY DAMAGE. I GOT BACK IN CAR & OPENED COVERING FOR MOONROOF. I SAW BIG HOLE & WHAT WAS LEFT OF GLASS WAS ALL SHATTERED. I TOOK PICTURES FROM INSIDE & TRIED TO TAKE PICTURES FROM OUTSIDE. I CALLED CAR DEALERSHIP, WHO SAID THEY NEVER HEARD OF ANY SUCH INCIDENT & SAID IT WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. LATER I INQUIRED ABOUT EXTRA COVERAGE FOR TIRE,WHEEL & GLASS I BOUGHT BUT WAS TOLD MOONROOF WAS NOT INCLUDED. *TR
