2002 Ford Ranger problems
The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.
Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.
For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.
The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 2002 Ford Ranger problems
The 2002 Ford Ranger, like any vehicle, has its own set of common problems that owners have reported. One of the most prevalent issues is with the timing chain rattle, which is caused by a poor design of the timing chain guides. This problem results in a rattling noise during cold starts, particularly between 2400 to 3000rpm.
Another major concern is the excessive play in the steering wheel of the 2002 Ford Ranger XLT, which can lead to a loss of control while driving, potentially causing accidents. The NHTSA has reported this issue, but Ford has not yet issued a safety recall for it.
Transmission failure is another common problem, particularly with the Ranger XL model. This issue is most noticeable when making right turns, where the truck may act as if it is in neutral instead of driving. The manual transmission also rattles with a funny sound when pulling to a stop. Ford dealerships have attempted to resolve this problem, but with no success, leading some to believe that the noise is a normal characteristic of the vehicle.
The fuel system in the 2002 Ford Ranger Edge has been reported to have issues, with the engine roaring when the vehicle is about to stop. This problem is caused by a faulty fuel system, which can lead to unintended acceleration when the brakes are applied, potentially causing fatal accidents. The fuel system lines have also been reported to leak and get rusty within a short time, further exacerbating the issue.
The Ranger XLT rear brakes have been known to lock up when the driver tries to stop the truck, particularly in rainy conditions. This issue can lead to accidents and has been suggested for a safety recall, but none has been issued yet.
The 2002 Ford Ranger also has issues with ball joints, producing a popping noise in front of the vehicle while driving at 20 mph and during right and left turns. This problem is caused by excessive ply at the lower ball joints and is sorted by replacing the ball joints at customers' cost since Ford has denied responsibility.
The wheel drive train can also be faulty, causing the Ford truck to skittle on icy roads with a loud sound of spinning tires. This issue is solved by replacing the whole unit.
The 2002 Ford Ranger has timing chain rattle problems caused by poor design of the timing chain guides. This rattling noise is heard during a cold start, and it is loudest from 2400 to 3000rpm. The Ford Company has designed a good timing chain guide with engines produced after the 2002 model.
The truck is not equipped with the required seat belt that can safely secure a child safety seat. This is very risky because the child cannot be carried safely in the vehicle. Car complaints show that the driver’s seat belt does not lock, which causes the airbag light to go off. Ford did a safety recall on it at all their dealerships.
If you notice your engine light coming on, an unsteady idling or find your engine misfires at times, you probably have fuel injector issues. This has been noted as a common problem for some Ford Rangers, with the cause often being a dirty or clogged filter. However, if your fuel injector is faulty, it will require a replacement to restore proper working order.
Some of the common symptoms when you’ve got a MAF sensor (mass airflow sensor) issue can be similar to those listed above for faulty fuel injectors. The sensor on your Ford Ranger could be defective, but it may simply be that it is too dirty to detect air levels properly, meaning that cleaning it could restore normality.
In summary, the 2002 Ford Ranger has several common problems, including issues with the timing chain rattle, steering wheel play, transmission failure, fuel system, rear brakes, ball joints, wheel drive train, seat belts, engine light, and fuel injectors. While some of these issues have been addressed through recalls or safety measures, others may require replacement parts or maintenance to avoid further engine issues.

Your Ford Ranger was built in Edison, NJ and it was put together very well. You have had no problems at all with it. The rear window is solid and the 5-speed manual works very well, especially when towing things around upstate NY. This is your first Ranger and you will keep on buying. Your Ranger came with Goodyear RT/S tires which are good. Additionally, the interior is almost noise-free, unlike in other manufacturers where you get a lot of road noise.

The Ranger's style, price, available features, and reliability really make it stand out from the competition. It's great to hear that it handled well on your long drive and that you found it comfortable with plenty of room in the cab. The bedliner and cover are fantastic extras that add even more value to your purchase. And with the 4.0 engine, you've got plenty of power to spare. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new truck! It sounds like it has some great features, like its get up and go, comfortable ride, and fun driving experience. I also love the height of the truck - it must feel like you're driving a full size truck! While it may be a little touchy when switching lanes at high speeds, it's great to hear that you have plenty of room in the cab and extension. I hope you continue to enjoy your new truck and I'm excited to hear more about your experience with it!

My Ranger FX4 is black with black interior. It looks great and always gets many compliments. I love the manual transmission and the manual transfer case, especially the chrome shifters with brushed chrome molding around their base. Although the 4.0L could use at least 40 additional HP, especially with the larger tires, I wouldn't change a thing about this truck. It's just perfect!

No problems in over four years. You've never left me walking, not even close.

Congratulations on getting the truck! I noticed that it has an automatic transmission, which is great. Although it may be a bit bare-bones, the mid-20s MPG is impressive. The brakes are sensitive and effective, which is important for safety. However, I did notice that the gear indicator is a bit off and the engine is a bit weak, causing some shaking during take-off. Additionally, the middle seat seems to be completely useless. Lastly, I had some trouble with the door rail/handle being a bit shallow and losing some items. Overall, it seems like a decent truck with some minor issues that can be improved upon.

The 2002 Ford Ranger 2.3 liter has some expensive parts, such as the $140 thermostat, which can cause overheating issues if not changed properly. Additionally, with 105,000 miles, it may require a throw out bearing and is currently experiencing a bumpy and rough ride. Despite these challenges, it is important to note that the Ranger has a history of low power, as seen in the older 4x4 xtra cab 3.0 model. However, it is still a reliable and capable vehicle.

I have owned eight Ford vehicles, but unfortunately, this 2002 Ranger had more problems than I could list here. Despite repeated attempts by the dealer to fix the issues, they were seldom resolved. I was disappointed to find that the Company Customer Service was non-existent. As a result, I have decided not to purchase another Ford vehicle in the future.

I've been searching for my first vehicle for the past 2 years. I had my heart set on a car that could tow a 2000lb trailer, but after struggling to find one, I decided to purchase a Ranger instead. It's the 4.0L model with every option except 4wd, and my friends and family all love it. While I was initially thrilled with my purchase, I've since discovered that it has poor fuel economy. Despite my light-footed driving, I only get an average of 11mpg in the city and 18mpg on the highway with cruise set at 60mph. (My worst fill-up so far was only 9.5mpg.) Additionally, the 6-disc CD changer jammed the first time I tried to use it. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the towing capabilities and features (air conditioning, cruise control, power everything, and a strong engine) of my Ranger.

I purchased the Edge because I needed the utility of a truck. I'm glad to say that I've been very pleased with it. It drives nicely both on and off the road, hauls everything I need, and gets me where I need to go. That's exactly what a truck is for. Although it isn't particularly fast with the 3.0, it's still enough for my needs.
