2005 Ford Ranger problems
The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.
Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.
For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.
The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 2005 Ford Ranger problems
The Ford Ranger, a popular pickup truck, has been known to have several common problems over the years, affecting its transmission, engine, cooling system, suspension, and brake system.
Transmission issues are a prevalent problem, with drivers experiencing shifting problems, delayed engagement, or even transmission failure. Shifting problems may include difficulty shifting gears, rough or erratic shifts, or slipping out of gear, which can be caused by worn-out transmission components, low transmission fluid, or electronic control system malfunctions. Delayed engagement occurs when there is a noticeable delay between shifting into gear and the vehicle's actual movement, which can be due to low transmission fluid, worn-out clutches, or valve body or solenoid issues. Transmission failure can render the vehicle inoperable, with causes including overheating, lack of maintenance, or internal component wear and tear.
Engine problems are also common, affecting various components such as the timing belt tensioner, camshaft synchronizer, ignition coil, head gasket, and oil pump. The timing belt tensioner failure affects Ford Rangers equipped with the 2.3L and 2.5L engines, causing the timing belt to come off and leading to severe engine damage. Camshaft synchronizer failure can cause the engine to stall or misfire, while ignition coil failure can result in engine misfiring and reduced gas mileage. Head gasket failure can cause the engine to overheat, leading to potential engine damage, and oil pump failure can cause low oil pressure and damage engines.
Cooling system issues have also been reported, with radiator leaks being a common problem. The radiator is responsible for cooling the engine by circulating coolant through the engine block. Over time, the radiator may develop leaks, which can be caused by corrosion or damage to the radiator itself or its hoses and connections.
Suspension problems are another common issue, with drivers reporting issues such as clunking, knocking, or popping noises coming from the suspension system. These noises can be caused by worn-out or damaged suspension components, such as bushings, struts, or control arms, which can affect the vehicle's handling and ride quality.
Brake system issues are also prevalent, with drivers reporting problems such as brake fluid leaks, brake pad wear, and brake rotor warping. Brake fluid leaks can be caused by corrosion or damage to the brake lines and hoses, leading to reduced braking performance or complete brake failure. Brake pad wear can be caused by normal wear and tear or neglecting to replace worn brake pads, which can cause damage to the brake rotors and reduced braking performance. Brake rotor warping can be caused by excessive heat or wear and tear, resulting in vibration or pulsation in the brake pedal during braking.
In conclusion, the Ford Ranger has several common problems that can affect its transmission, engine, cooling system, suspension, and brake system. Regular maintenance and seeking professional help at the first sign of a problem can prevent further damage and costly repairs.

- Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: At 200k miles I got an air bag light on my guage cluster. The blinking code corresponded to a bad connection at the CLOCKSPRING. Ford part number 1l5z-14a664-ab is the replacement part and is currently unavailable, for the last 6 months. This part covers a few different models and has been exhausted by the dealers when correcting the Airbag recall. The dealer can not give me a date on a replacement part.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
- VIN: 1FTZR45E15P
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My daughter called me screaming when her 2005 Ford Ranger FX4 Level 2 had unexplained runaway throttle while driving back to college in January 2022. The vehicle had the cruise control on for a couple hours and without warning, began to accelerate to the point that it was at the rev limiter, traveling at 90 miles an hour. She called me hysterical and I advised her to shut off the cruise and hit the brakes but nothing would stop her or turn off the cruise. I advised her to turn off the vehicle to ACC position and coast to the shoulder. When she had calmed down, I asked her to restart the truck, it started wide open throttle, so she immediately shut it off. I told my daughter then to mash the gas pedal a few times and restart the vehicle. It restarted at normal idle speed. 1/28/2022- my daughter came home from school today for a visit, the same thing happened again on her drive home. She was able to coast to the shoulder and restart after mashing the pedal a few times. I am advising her not to use the cruise control and to get it into a Ford shop to inspect. There are no lamps or warnings to indicate there is an issue or code/CEL. This is a deadly situation that apparently has occurred with Ford Explorers that have the 4.0 Liter engine and 5.0L engine. It appears from other forums (https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/full-throttle-runaway-vehicle.442563/) that a throttle control cable may have an issue or defect that is causing the throttle spring to not release, or the cable is hanging up. Please see included Explorer forum link above.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-09
- VIN: 1ftzr45e15p
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: Incident was reported to me by an employee. Driving in traffic on a highway with normal, dry road conditions the accelerator pedal started moving down on its own. The truck accelerated on its own from 50 mph to 70+ mph. Applying the brakes the truck did NOT slow down. Eventually, the accelerator pedal corrected itself and started working normally. There was no indication on the dashboard of the issue. This could have resulted in a serious accident or death. The truck is waiting to be towed to the Ford garage for repair. Thank you, Wendy McNeill

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-08-15
- VIN: 1FTZR45E85P
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I WOULD BE DRIVING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE WHOLE VEHICLE WOULD JUST SHUT DOWN. THIS HAPPENED 3 OR 4 TIMES JUST GOING AT 25 TO 35 MPH. AT FIRST, I THOUGHT IT WAS A CLOGGED FUEL LINE SINCE IT WOULD SOMEHOW RESET ITSELF AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC SO I REPLACED THE FILTER EVEN THOUGH I COULD SEE NOTHING WRONG. WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON A BACKCOUNTRY ROAD THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS PROBABLY THE FUEL PUMP SO I HAD THE WHOLE THING REPLACED. IT HAPPENED ONE MORE TIME AFTER THAT, I WAS PULLING ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND HAD JUST GOTTEN UP TO SPEED 55 MPH AND THERE WAS A TRACTOR-TRAILER BEHIND ME WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN AGAIN EVERYTHING SHUT DOWN. LUCKILY I HAD ENOUGH MOMENT BUILT UP I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BEFORE GETTING HIT BY THE TRACTOR-TRAILER. I FINALLY LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT SOMEONE HAD MENTIONED THE SAME PROBLEM IT MAY BE THE INERTIA SWITCH. I CALLED UP A LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND HAD ASKED THE PARTS PERSON IF THE HAD A REPLACEMENT AND IF HE HEARD ANY PROBLEMS ABOUT IT. I WAS TOLD IT WOULD HAVE TO BE ORDERED BECAUSE THEY WERE OUT OF THEM, THEY HAD SOLD A FEW IN THE PAST MONTHS. WHEN I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM I WAS TOLD OH YES WE HAVE HEARD ABOUT THAT HAPPENING BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL. I EXPLAINED HOW IT COULD BE A SAFETY PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD THAT IT MUST NOT BE HAPPENING ENOUGH FOR IT TO BE A RECALL. I RECENTLY FOUND THIS SITE AND HAVE SEEN THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAD THIS HAPPEN SO AT LEAST I KNOW I WASN'T CRAZY. *TR

HE HAD A GREAT REPUTATION AND I WENT TO SEE HIM GOT A GREAT DEAL SO I BOUGHT IT.. THE TRUCK PASSED MA STATE INSPECTION WITH NO ISSUES. I KEPT GETTING NOTICES FROM FORD FOR AN AIR BAG RECALL SO I WENT TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER TO HAVE MY AIRBAGS REPLACED FOR RECALL AND WANTED THEM TO CHECK THE UNDERCARRIDE AS WELL AS I HAVE SEEN HORROR STORIES ONLINE AS HOW BAD THESE UNDERCARRIDGES WERE ON THE FORD RANGERS. THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP DID A SAFETY INSPECTION AND FOUND THAT MY ENTIRE UNDERCARRIDGE HAS BEEN RUSTED OUT. THERE IS A MISSING CROSSMEMBER BAR WHICH I GUESS SUPPORTS THE VEHICLE THAT IS COMPLETELY GONE AND ALL HOIST POINTS ARE BAD VEHICLE IS COMPRIMISED DUE TO ALL THE RUST AND IS NOT SAFE FOR DRIVING. I WOULD THINK A REPUTABLE FORD DEALER WHO GAVE ME THIS ESTIMATE WOULD AT LEAST TRY TO HELP ME BUT NO. I HAVE WRITTEN TO FORD BUT NO ANSWER AS OF YET. I AM FIGHTING NOW WITH THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHO SOLD ME THE VEHICLE IN THE FIRST PLACE AS IT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SOLD AND ALSO LOOKING INTO ANY RECOURSE I HAVE WITHIN MA LAW. THIS DOESNT SEEM RIGHT YOU HAVE AN ENTIRE UNDERCARRIDGE THAT HAS BEEN ROTTED OUT FOD KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO GET SERIOUSLY HURT OR EVEN DIE IN AN ACCIDENT HERE. - Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is superseding a previous recall for certain 2004-2006 Ford Ranger trucks to implement a final repair. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger's frontal air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began January 16, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S42. Note: This recall supersedes recall 15V322 which was an interim repair. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S42.

I previously owned a Chevrolet S-10 and unfortunately, it was the worst vehicle I ever owned. However, I decided to switch to Ford and bought a Ranger. I was amazed by the difference! Everything about this car is great and much better than the S-10. The engine refinement, power, handling, ride, and overall vehicle beats Chevy in every way. I could list it all, but it's just too much. The Ranger is just that good!

I'm really impressed with the build quality and ergonomic features of the vehicle. I received great support and service from my local Ford dealer, which was a pleasant surprise. As a former BMW and Porsche owner, I know what good service and fit and finish should be like.

This is the only true compact truck on the market. Despite being a little disappointed with the acceleration of the 3.0 V6, I took it to the drag strip and achieved a respectable 17.80 at 76 mph. I replaced the manual shifter with a Hurst shifter to improve its stiffness. The gas mileage is pleasing and matches the EPA estimate.

This truck is really fun to drive! It's compact, but it feels like a full-size truck. The 4.0L V-6 engine has plenty of power, and I never experience any power loss when pulling my 17-foot Searay. I absolutely love my truck! The dealer was so easy to deal with, and with the rebates that were offered, I feel like I got the best bargain out there.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had no issues with your truck since leasing it for $225/month! While it may not be a luxury vehicle and lacks some acceleration, it certainly serves its purpose well.

Although my experience with my 2005 Ford Ranger was not the best, I believe it could have been better. The ride was a bit choppy and the interior was not as high quality as I would have liked. Unfortunately, I had to take the vehicle in for service twice in the first 2 months. However, I am grateful that the issues were resolved. I hope that future Ford Rangers will be more reliable. Thank you for considering my feedback.

I recently had to replace the clutch in my vehicle due to a loud squeaking sound. Although it took 9 trips to the dealership to get it fixed, I am glad that the issue has been resolved. However, I have been experiencing some problems with starting the vehicle, which can be a bit frustrating at times. I hope to find a solution to this issue soon. While I have had some challenges with my Ford vehicle, I remain hopeful that the company will be able to address my concerns regarding the dulled and metallic finish of the fender, as well as the paint overspray on the left front fender. I appreciate any assistance that can be provided by the home office. Thank you.

This truck has many good qualities, but unfortunately it has a very irritating vibration in the seat due to a rear end problem. The vibration occurs between 20-50 mph and can be quite uncomfortable. I have taken it to the dealer multiple times to try and fix the issue, but unfortunately they were unable to resolve it. On my fourth visit, a Ford engineer inspected the truck and concluded that this is how the truck is supposed to perform and that there is no available fix. I purchased the truck on July 29, 2004 and will be stuck with it for a long time to come. If comfort and a smooth ride are important to you, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

It's disappointing that Ford removed the rear wheel well splash shields in 2005/6 to save money. As a result, on wet roads, water, road oil, and spilled chemicals are thrown up through the seam under the lip of the bed rail and into the bed, even with a shell on the back. This has made it difficult to keep the interior dry. It seems that Ford has prioritized cost-cutting over quality, which is a shame. I wonder if other corners were cut as well. The shifting linkage is a bit clunky, and the 4-cylinder engine vibrates more than most. Additionally, the bed doesn't quite fit the width of the 2-door cab, which looks a bit awkward.
