Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.
It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.
There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

- Summary: The vehicle's oil was changed at Transitowne Kia of West Seneca, NY on 10/19/24 with 19,576 on the odometer. During the oil change, a Kia multi-point inspection was performed. No leaks or other concerns were found. On [XXX] with around 19,596 on the odometer while driving on [XXX] the vehicle experienced a sudden loss of power accompanied by grinding noises coming from the engine. This was followed by the check engine light flashing and the low oil indicator illuminating. I pulled over and found that a massive amount of oil was rapidly pouring out from beneath the vehicle. Vehicle was towed back to Transitowne Kia who on 10/21/24 diagnosed the issue as a failure to the oil pressure setting unit. Transitowne Kia replaced an oil plug and alleges the issue is unrelated to the oil change. They further allege the vehicle's engine is functioning fine following their complete engine diagnostic testing and the vehicle is ready to be picked up. - Summary: 6 different times my wife has driven the vehicle and when at a stop and restart the vehicle will not go over 25 mph even when the gas pedal is pushed to the floor. I have two videos of it happening with her even after the previous day of the vehicle being at the dealership for the same problem. The A on the dash was not supposed to be blinking while driving according to dealership rep. I have the videos also but can’t upload them because they are bigger than allowed. I am concerned after reading reviews of other owners having the same problem but no resolution has been found. I am concerned for my family that ride in the vehicle to neighboring states for ball tournaments. Please help try to find a resolution to this issue before my family or another is injured or killed.

Spark plugs and ignition coils have been replaced by the dealer, but the issue still persists. Forcing the vehicle to pull over and being unable to accelerate on the highway is risk to the driver's safety as well as the safety of other vehicles on the road. The vehicle also now struggles to start and begins misfiring when left off overnight and started cold.

- Summary: 10/19/2022 – Vehicle stuck in drive and would not shift out of drive. Vehicle towed to the dealer and not touched for a day and a half. Dealer found walnut lodged in shifter column which was preventing the shifter from going into park. Dealer also performed software update on vehicle. 10/21/2022 – Picked up vehicle and it was shifting very hard through every gear, returned to the dealer for further repairs. 10/26/2022 – Picked up vehicle again and performance improved but it still shifted hard and lurched when coming to a stop and when going in reverse. Dealer stated that they had retrained the transmission and performed another software update related to the transmission. I told them that I was driving out of town tomorrow morning for 10 days and that this was the only vehicle I could take and asked if they could provide a rental. Dealer stated that the current issues would not cause any long-term damage and that I could bring it back when I got back in town and that they would take care of it then. 11/17/2022 – Returned vehicle to dealer to correct the previous issues, they said that they did another software update and that it is shifting properly. Performance has improved but the vehicle would still lurch when going into reverse and occasionally when coming to a stop. 12/22/2022 – Returned vehicle for scheduled maintenance and safety recall for the transmission. Another software update was performed and transmission has been working without issue so far. 4/18/2024 - When driving while accelerating we experience a significant loss of power and it will not accelerate as normal. I can have the pedal nearly to the floor and it will barely move. When this occurs you can see the @ symbol flashing on the dash but no other warning lights or indicators. This is the 6th time this happened since February of this year and it has happened 3 times while on the on ramp to the freeway. This has continues to occur at least 3 times a week every week.

The contact stated while the vehicle was parked overnight and the following morning it was driven a short distance to pick up their children, upon arrival the vehicle was parked in the garage and all the occupants exited, it caught on fire. No injuries were sustained. There was no property damage to the residence. No warning light had previously been illuminated. The contact stated a few weeks prior that the vehicle had new parts installed for routine maintenance. The local fire department arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire. The contact was advised by the fire department and insurance provider that the fire origin was related to the wiring behind the odometer. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was later taken to the insurance provider. The failure was being investigated by the manufacturer and insurance provider. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000.

- Summary: Drivers seat is moving all the way forward & inclining all the way towards steering wheel while operating vehicle and I am unable to stop stop it or move it back. This has happened to me 4 times now, 2 of them at high speeds & there is no rhyme or rhythm to when or if you can adjust the seat back. It stayed all the way up after parking & sitting in my driveway for about 14 hours, I was able to move it back but after driving it about 2 miles it moved all the way up again & I so far am unable to move it back. This nearly caused me to crash the first time it happened & I am simply lucky to by thin enough to fit in the tiny space & somewhat see the road long enough to stop. Someone 10 pounds heavier likely would not be so lucky & would most certainly crash.

- Summary: On 3/5/24, the vehicle began to limp shortly after starting it and driving a little ways. I pulled off and a majority of the lights on the dash came on. I turned vehicle off and then on, and the check engine light stayed on. I was then able to drive car as normal. The check engine light eventually went off. Service department said they were unable to do anything unless the light was on. For the next few months, upon starting the car, the auto start/stop light would flash on the dashboard. The car would limp until you turn the car off and back on. Once turned back on, the car would drive normally. On 5/20/24, check engine light came back on. Drove to dealership where I had to schedule an appointment for diagnostic testing. On 6/6/24, I had diagnostic testing done at a service department where they found that the fuel rail had gone bad.

- Summary: My 2022 Kia Sorento has 18K miles on it and in Feb 2024 the first incident of this issue occurred. I will be accelerating or driving through traffic (coming on and off the gas), the car will lurch several times, and then the gas pedal will stop working and the car loses all acceleration. No engine light or warning comes on. The car remains on, but it won't accelerate. I have to restart the car one or more times to get the acceleration to reengage. Since Feb 2024 it has happened 4 times, most recently on May 7, 2024. On these occasions I was driving 5-10mph, 30mph, 40mph, and once at 60mph. I have had all other required maintenance performed, checks performed, etc. I have taken it to the dealer where I leased the vehicle twice. They have not been able to replicate the issue. I'm not sure what this means, "is it available for inspection upon request" but if someone wanted to inspect it, absolutely it's available. The car completely stops accelerating, foot to the floor on the gas pedal and no acceleration happens. This happened to me on 4 separate occasions at 5-10mph, 30mph, 40mph, and once at 60mph at exactly the busiest and heavily trafficked highway in my area that has accidents on a daily basis. It's extremely dangerous. I have taken the car in twice, am scheduled for a third visit. They've kept it for multiple days both times and haven't been able to replicate the issue. The vehicle/component has NOT been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others There were no other warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The engine light does not come on. No other warning signs of symptoms before this started happening or before each failure. The first issue happened on Feb 6, 2024, then again on March 22, 2024, then again on March 23, 2024, then again on May 7, 2024.

- Summary: I was driving on the highway when my car suddenly lost all power. I tried to brake, but the pedal went straight to the floor several times with no pressure. The car finally slowed down, and I believe the ABS kicked in, causing a jerky stop. I managed to pull over, but the engine was barely idling and seemed on the verge of stalling. This was a very dangerous situation. Not only did losing power on the highway put me at risk, but I also had to wait on the side of the road at night in the rain with traffic whizzing by. When I initially checked for the problem, I noticed a strong smell of gasoline and exhaust fumes, with no other indications of failure. - Summary: Without warning or indication, my windshield wipers stopped working in a heavy night rainstorm causing me to not be able to see anything. The dealership told me to bring my car in the next morning, while it was still raining, and they said they don’t know what caused it but stated that I need a replacement windshield wiper motor. They ‘escalated’ the issue due to the safety concern involved with lack of functional windshield wipers. As of today, 3/29, Kia continues to tell me there is no ETA of the windshield wiper motor. The wipers are stuck in reverse and only work occasionally… but in reverse. Most times they do not work. I have been in constant communication with the dealership and Kia customer care and no one is able to help or offer a loaner car, but everyone I speak to confirms that this is in fact a safety issue and continues to tell me the case is being escalated. How high does it need to be escalated before a part is received and the issue is fixed? I do not feel safe driving in this condition as it has been raining a lot and no one seems to care about my safety. I don’t want to get into an accident due to limited or completely obstructed visibility. It is now spring and spring in NY means alot of rain, and since 3/6 it has rained more days than not. Today, kia customer care sent me an email saying that the part was ordered on [XXX], but it should have been ordered on [XXX] which was the date I went to the dealership where they confirmed my windshield wiper motor needs to be replaced. - Summary: While attempting to merge into 70mph traffic on the interstate, the vehicle suddenly lost all acceleration capabilities. I could have been in an accident due to the sudden loss of acceleration and eventual power to the engine. When I pressed on the gas pedal, there was no resistance and the pedal went all the way to the floor. The vehicle slowly accelerated on it's own from 20MPH to 55MPH without my pressing the accelerator. There were no warnings on the dash at this time. Once it reached 55MPH, it slowly began to decrease it's speed without my pressing the brake or accelerator. As it started decreasing in speed, a warning popped up "Check Hybrid system, Stop safely". At this time, the battery level showed 0 bars though it showed half full (8 bars before this happened). I got over to the side of the highway and continued coasting until the vehicle slowed itself to a complete stop at which point the car put itself in Park and engaged the Emergency Brake and the dash displayed "Parking brake automatically engaged" and the Engine Oil Pressure Warning light came on. I attempted to put the car back in Drive and the dash displayed "Shifting conditions not met". I turned the car off, let it sit a few minutes and restarted it. When I restarted it, the battery showed 0 bars and the display said "Park with engine On to charge battery". I put it in Drive and I was able to drive without any issues. The battery level went back up 6 bars in less than a minute and I drove it to the dealership. This was the 2nd time this happened. The same exact thing happened the first time and when I took it to the dealership they couldn't replicate the issue and there were no codes recorded. First incident was on 1/12/24. I immediately pulled over, put it in park and turned the vehicle off. It worked fine after restarting it. Second incident was on 1/25/24. There were no codes recorded this time either but I do have pictures of the dash displays. They are "live" photos.

- Summary: I recently got this vehicle and only has 26k miles on it. I have always been a good driver and have taken care of this vehicle, but this vehicle has brought too much stress in my life recently. Keeps breaking down, and i have to repeatedly go to the service center. My value for time is gone. The service team are not welcoming and they never give you a replacement car. Not everyone has a replacement car for when it will break down. It messed up with all of my schedule, my family's schedule, kid not being able to go to school. Me not being able to go to work. Today i had to take my car to service again, second time. Last time i had to book a rental car from my own pocket for 2 whole week. And it broke down again today, i have no car and it has been a worst experience. KIA needs to do something about this. I will never be a KIA customer again in my life. KIA has a worst engine and worst customer service.

- Summary: My 2022 KIA Sorrento PHEV periodically gives a "Check Hybrid System, Stop Safely" emergency warning. When this happens the vehicle will not accelerate and can only be limped to a stop. This has occurred 4 times in 18 months. In three instances the vehicle was limped to a safe stop but on the other occasion it left us stranded in an intersection. This problem creates imminent danger and potential peril. KIA maintenance looked at the vehicle after the last two events and reported that they can't do anything because there aren't any recorded fault codes. From a technical perspective, it appears that an electronic problem occurs where the hybrid control either fails to recognize the low battery status or fails to command the engine to run when needed. Once stopped I can see that the hybrid electric battery charge has depleted and the engine failed to start. Cycling power off and on a couple of times appears to reset the circuitry allowing the engine to restart and the hybrid battery to begin recharging. Unfortunately, the KIA OBD is not detecting this particular failure.

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 21,016.

There are a few areas that could be improved. Firstly, it would be great to have more than one port for Android Auto, or at least the option to use it as a USB stick for music. Additionally, having more than 8 power charging ports would be useful. The cigarette charging port can only be used when accessories are powered on, which may be inconvenient for some. The main issue for many people, including myself, is the need to press the Auto Engine STOP & GO button near the shifter every time we drive. While it is said to be a safety and environmental feature, it can be frustrating. On a positive note, I really appreciate the design of both the exterior and interior, especially the 10.25

You've owned this car for about 3 months now and it's been a great experience so far. The interior is absolutely beautiful and the turbo provides plenty of power. It drives like a dream and the captain chairs and wood grain interior were the main reasons for your purchase. Although it doesn't have a homelink rear mirror, seat selector, or display on the windshield, it's still a very stylish car that gets compliments all the time. The 3rd row is a nice feature to have, even though it's more suitable for small kids. Overall, it's been a great purchase and you're very happy with it.

I bought my Sorrento in January and I am very pleased with it. I traded in a Nissan Murano, which was also a great car, but I wanted something different. So far, I love my Sorrento! The technology is amazing and I really enjoy the way it drives. It is also very roomy inside, especially compared to my Murano. The only things I wish the car had are a head-up display and homelink. Overall, it has been a great experience!

My 2021 Kia Sorento with 10,000 miles is currently at the dealer for service for the second time due to the same issue. The engine light comes on and the car is sluggish to accelerate or go into gear. During the first visit, they said it was a misfire but couldn't replicate it and sent me home. Unfortunately, the issue persisted and I had to bring it back. This time, they informed me that it might be a fuel line issue and that they have to order a part. Although the part is on back order and won't be here for another month, they were kind enough to provide me with a loaner car. While it's not the same as my Sorento, I'm grateful for their assistance. However, I'm leaving for vacation soon with four family members and the loaner car is a small 4-door sedan. The dealership informed me that they have 26 loaners, but unfortunately, all are currently in use. I'm a bit disappointed with the situation, but I understand that these things happen. I opened a ticket with Kia Corporate, and they informed me that they will not reimburse me for an equivalent vehicle, only a Kia SUV at $44/day. I'm having trouble finding an SUV for that price, but I appreciate their offer nonetheless. Thank you, Kia, for your help during this time.

I strongly advise against purchasing the new Sorento SX XLine. Despite being able to drive it for a day, on the second day, all the safety equipment, including the Blind Spot, stopped working. The dashboard is lit up with warning lights, including the ABS light. When applying the brakes to stop, they vibrate excessively and produce a loud noise, which is concerning.

My 2021 Sorento has only 400 miles on it, but unfortunately, the airbag light has been on and it has been at the dealership for two weeks. Despite the unavailability of the required part in the USA, I am confident that the dealership will take the necessary steps to resolve the issue and ensure that my new car is in perfect condition. We have owned two Sorentos in the past. Unfortunately, our 2018 Sorento required a new engine after only 60,000 miles. Hoping that these issues had been remedied, we traded it in for a 2021 Sorento. However, after less than a year and only 15,000 miles, the vehicle is now at the dealer in need of a new transmission. While the dealer does not have loaners available, they are paying for a base rental, although it is not a comparable vehicle. Despite the fact that the warranty does not cover car rental, KIA Corporate has informed me that the dealer is offering a good deal. They have also indicated that they may reimburse my monthly car payment, which I still have to pay. It is important to do your research and rely on information from independent reviewers. While some sites may receive kickbacks for promoting KIA, several YouTube contributors have identified KIA engines as having terrible reliability. There are also class action lawsuits dating back to 2010 models. It appears that KIA has not learned from their mistakes. Please spread the word.

I purchased a top-of-the-line Kia Sorento Turbo, but unfortunately experienced transmission issues within a year of ownership. Despite the vehicle being in the dealership shop for over a month, there is no ETA for when the repairs will be completed. As a result, our quality of life has been negatively impacted. It is imperative that the dealership provides better customer service to expedite the resolution of this issue.
