The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.

The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).

The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Common 2015 Ford Fusion hybrid problems

The 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and powertrain. A significant number of complaints have been filed regarding engine failure due to cracked blocks and antifreeze leaks. This issue can lead to the engine overheating and eventually losing all automotive power. When this happens, drivers often find that the engine block is cracked, and antifreeze has leaked into the engine cylinder. This problem has been reported in other Ford models from the mid-2010s, such as the Ford Escape, but there have been no recalls or investigations specifically for the 2015 Fusion engine failure.

Another issue that has been reported is powertrain problems, with 113 complaints filed specifically for issues in this area. Powertrain issues can affect the vehicle's overall performance and fuel efficiency.

The 2015 Fusion Hybrid has also experienced rollaway-related recalls, with four separate recalls issued due to potential rollaway risks. These recalls were issued for various reasons, including potential rollaway when the key is pulled out of the ignition and rollaway resulting from a detached shift cable.

Steering complaints have also been a significant issue for the 2015 Fusion Hybrid, with three recalls issued to address these problems. Despite these recalls, steering complaints remain a major concern for many drivers.

Lastly, the 2015 Fusion Hybrid has experienced brake hose ruptures, which have led to two open investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While the 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid has many positive attributes, such as impressive refinement, well-rounded performance, and high-tech features, it is essential to be aware of these common problems when considering purchasing this vehicle.

2015 Ford Fusion hybrid recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2015 Ford Fusion hybrid.

2018-09-10
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 120V Convenience charge cords that were supplied with and sold for use with 2013-2015 Ford C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi vehicles and 2012-2015 Ford Focus Electric vehicles. Cords with part numbers FM58-10B706-AA, FM58-10B706-AB, FM58-10B706-AC, FM58-10B706-AD, FM58-10B706-AE and FM58-10B706-AF were manufactured without thermistors, and during vehicle charging, increased resistance in the house's outlet or wiring can cause the cord to overheat and melt.
  • Consequence: An overheated cord can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the current cord with a new 120V convenience cord with a thermistor, free of charge. The recall began January 18, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S24.
2014-11-18
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM/PCM/TECM)
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 27, 2013, to October 31, 2014, 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid vehicles manufactured February 24, 2014, to October 31, 2014, and 2015 Ford Fusion Energi vehicles manufactured July 14, 2014, to October 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the key may be able to be removed even while the transmission is not in Park. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed despite that the transmission is not in Park, a driver may think the vehicle is safety parked, when it is not, increasing the risk of a vehicle rollaway that could cause the vehicle to strike and injure the driver, other vehicle occupants, or bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles, free of charge. The recall began on December 15, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14C11.

Negative 2015 Ford Fusion hybrid car reviews

I have put a lot of miles on my car under various conditions. Although I live in Southern California, I cannot attest to significant changes in weather. When I bought this car, it had a rated MPG of 47/47. Ford sent me a check for $750 when they corrected the ratings. While this did not cover the amount of savings I had anticipated, it was still a nice gesture. The car is beautiful and has had minimal problems. It takes some getting used to its size as it feels like a boat. The departure angles on inclines/declines are not good due to the air dam. Unfortunately, my front paint has already begun to wear on the front bumper from so much driving. As of May 2018, I have relocated to Texas and still driving the car. Repair costs have been next to none outside of general maintenance. I barely use MyFord Touch w/ Navigation thanks to Bluetooth/Cellphone. The vehicle has held up extremely well, and the gas mileage is the same if not better than when I originally purchased it. You have to drive it like your grandma stole it to see the MPG benefit. I have had about 4 recalls, which were easy to have done and nothing that prevented me from driving the Fusion on a daily basis.

First transmission replacement was required at 106 K miles. The dealership replaced it with a 'refurbished' transmission. Fortunately, we have a 2-year extended warranty, which came in handy when the transmission failed again 18 months later. We have been waiting for over a month for a new transmission, but we are confident that it will be worth the wait. This is a one-owner car that has been driven very conservatively and has always received regular maintenance. Despite the transmission issues, we still love the car, especially its excellent gas mileage.

  3. Berta Doyle 2024-11-28

The Ford Fusion Hybrid may experience transmission issues that require a complete replacement, which can be costly at around $6000. It is recommended to consider other options before purchasing a Ford Fusion Hybrid.

  4. Bertram Toy 2024-10-04

Although we have had a great experience with our Fords, my Fusion Hybrid, a 2013 model, was unfortunately totaled when rear-ended at a stop sign. However, I am confident in the quality of Ford vehicles and believe that this was an isolated incident. My daughter's 2013 Fusion recently experienced a transmission issue at 120,000 miles, with a minimum quote of $3500 due to its CVT transmission. Despite this setback, I remain confident in the overall reliability of Ford cars and trust that this was an uncommon occurrence. While disappointed, I am still a loyal Ford customer and look forward to continuing to drive their vehicles in the future.

  5. Miller Volkman 2024-07-08

The 2014 Fusion Hybrid did not meet its mpg claims. It is unlikely to achieve more than 34mpg from normal driving and 38mpg from hybrid driving. In comparison to the Prius, which achieves its claimed mpg numbers when driven normally, the Fusion Hybrid falls short of its 47mpg claim unless the driving conditions are optimal. The MyTouch system can be challenging to use and requires multiple inputs. The navigation system can be difficult to navigate, so we prefer to use our phones instead.

Positive 2015 Ford Fusion hybrid car reviews

I am thrilled to share my experience with the '15 Fusion Hybrid SE! As someone who has never been particularly interested in cars, I was pleasantly surprised by how phenomenal this American car is. Not only is it sleek and stylish on the outside, but it is also incredibly comfortable and well-designed on the inside. The driving experience is an absolute pleasure, especially if you are a careful driver who takes it easy on the gas and brake. I have been blown away by the amazing performance of this car, with the readout showing an impressive range of 44mph to 55.6 mph on a few city drives. We decided to go for the full MYTOUCH sync package, and it has been well worth the extra investment. The integration of phone, Bluetooth, music, and other features has been flawless so far. I am absolutely loving this car and cannot wait to share more updates!

Driving a hybrid can be a bit of a learning curve, but don't worry - Ford has got you covered with several coaching tools to help you get the most out of your car! To start off, make sure each tire has 35 lbs of pressure (check when tires are cold or haven't been driven on in 8 hours or more). Additionally, waxing your car, easing on the accelerator and brakes, and using cruise control in eco mode whenever possible can all help you maximize your mpg. Not only will driving conservatively save you money on gas, but it will also create less wear and tear on your vehicle and make for a safer drive. With a combined EPA increase from 22 to 47 mpg compared to an 08 Accord EXL V6, you'll be saving money in no time!

My car has just hit 125,000 miles! It's been great on gas, super quiet, and the seating is really comfortable. Plus, it's been really low maintenance - I've only needed to do basic upkeep. Not bad for a car that's over 6 years old!!

  4. Kyler Moore 2025-06-23

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new American car! It sounds like you've gotten the hang of the navigation and touch system, and are finding it accurate and easy to use. It's great to hear that you're getting excellent mileage, even better than the newly corrected MPG. With just a little time spent with the manual, you should be all set. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  5. Quinton Stiedemann 2025-06-10

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I absolutely love it! The appearance package with the five spoke wheels really makes it stand out and everyone I know thinks it looks outstanding. I was a bit worried about the gas mileage with the non low-rolling resistance tires, but it hasn't seemed to be an issue at all. The handling and driving dynamics are top notch and it's surprisingly quiet. Plus, the seats are super comfortable! The only downside is that I've had some trouble with My Ford Touch, which hasn't lived up to my expectations. But overall, I'm really happy with my car and I hope Ford can fix this issue soon.
