The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.

The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).

The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Latest negative Ford Fusion hybrid car reviews

  1. Madisen Boehm 2025-02-15

    Vehicle year: 2014

I have put a lot of miles on my car under various conditions. Although I live in Southern California, I cannot attest to significant changes in weather. When I bought this car, it had a rated MPG of 47/47. Ford sent me a check for $750 when they corrected the ratings. While this did not cover the amount of savings I had anticipated, it was still a nice gesture. The car is beautiful and has had minimal problems. It takes some getting used to its size as it feels like a boat. The departure angles on inclines/declines are not good due to the air dam. Unfortunately, my front paint has already begun to wear on the front bumper from so much driving. As of May 2018, I have relocated to Texas and still driving. Repair costs have been next to none outside of general maintenance. I barely use MyFord Touch w/ Navigation thanks to Bluetooth/Cellphone. The vehicle has held up extremely well, and gas mileage is the same if not better than when originally purchased. However, you have to drive it like your grandma stole it to see MPG benefit. I have had about 4 recalls, which were easy to have done and nothing that prevented me from driving the Fusion on a daily basis.

  2. Maximus Doyle 2025-01-27

    Vehicle year: 2015

First transmission replacement was required at 106 K miles. The dealership replaced it with a 'refurbished' transmission. Fortunately, we have a 2-year extended warranty, which came in handy when the transmission failed again 18 months later. We have been waiting for over a month for a new transmission, but we are confident that it will be worth the wait. This is a one-owner car that has been driven very conservatively and has always received regular maintenance. Despite the transmission issues, we still love the car, especially its excellent gas mileage.

  3. Salvatore Johnston 2025-01-12

    Vehicle year: 2014

I purchased the 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE in June of 2014 and have driven 35K miles. Despite the advertised 47/47 MPG, I have only been able to achieve 38 MPG, which is disappointing as fuel efficiency was a key factor in my purchase decision. However, I appreciate that Ford promptly issued me a $700 check for 1 year of fuel and apologized for the miscalculation. While I would have preferred a refund or a check that covers my 8 year/125K warranty, I am confident that Ford will continue to work towards improving their products. Although I had planned on replacing my second vehicle with a F-150, I am still considering all options and will make a decision based on what best suits my needs.

  4. Berta Doyle 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2015

The Ford Fusion Hybrid may experience transmission issues that require a complete replacement, which can be costly at around $6000. It is recommended to consider other options before purchasing a Ford Fusion Hybrid.

  5. Rolando Willms 2024-11-20

    Vehicle year: 2013

The car's advertised fuel efficiency of 47 mpg highway is not accurate. In my experience of driving 6,500 miles over 6 months, mostly on the highway, I was only able to achieve an average of 35-37 mpg, despite my best efforts to drive efficiently. Additionally, I encountered issues with the ABS light coming on multiple times, which the dealer was unable to resolve. The Ford MyTouch system also did not meet my expectations, with the navigation system frequently freezing and becoming unusable. As a result, I decided to trade in the car after six months, incurring a loss of approximately $4k. It is important to be aware of these issues before making a purchase decision.

  1. Miller King 2025-03-28

    Vehicle year: 2017

First hybrid I have owned and I love it! It feels close to being a luxury car. The gas mileage is nearly 45mpg the way I’m driving it. The only thing I need to get used to is the acceleration, but that's understandable since it's a bigger car and runs on EV. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

  2. Llewellyn Brown 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 2014

If you're planning to drive without considering mileage, this car may not be the best fit for you. It operates differently from gas-only cars. When coming to a stop, it's recommended to gently ride the brake for 500 feet to allow the regenerating brakes to gradually slow down the car. This will prevent the brake pads from wearing out quickly. By using the brakes properly, you can avoid wearing them out. For short trips, such as going to the grocery store 2 miles away, the car may not achieve high mileage because the gas motor is not warmed up yet. However, the longer the stretch you go, the more efficient the car becomes. The car performs best at 55 miles per hour, and I typically get 48 to 50 mpg. On the freeway, I get about 40 plus on short distances. During hot weather in Florida, I keep the air conditioning at 75 degrees, which helps greatly since the air conditioning draws a lot of electricity. One of the advantages of a hybrid car is that it has no leaky transmission, only a reliable belt drive. You only need to change the oil every 10,000 miles, and you never need a starter motor because the hybrid motor starts the car instantly. This means that hybrid cars require less maintenance than gas-only vehicles. Additionally, the gauges on the dash show how many gallons have been used and how many miles have been driven on EV Electric only, which is about 50% of the time. Once you get more miles on the gasoline motor and it's broken in, you'll notice a difference. I'd say it should be broken in by 30,000 miles. On average, I save about 35 to 40% on gas used. I hope this information helps you!

You made an excellent choice with your car! It's great to hear that it has been so reliable for you. Even after being rear-ended, hitting a deer, and having a tree fall on it, it still runs like a champ. The silver SE package with upgraded leather and 5 spoke OEM 18” wheels and black tinted windows sounds amazing. While I'm a Chevy guy when it comes to classics, I have to say that I'm impressed with Ford's quality now that I've seen your car. Keep up the good work taking care of it!

I've only driven 500 miles in the car so far, but I plan to update my experience over time. Currently, I'm getting an impressive 42.5 MPG in mixed driving. I've rented various cars in the past, including 2014 Nissan Altimas, several Priuses, and lots of Camrys. However, the 2015 Fusion Hybrid surpasses them all in terms of build quality, comfort, and handling. It's a much quieter and refined ride, and it handles corners with ease. The only area where the Fusion falls short, and perhaps all hybrids do, is in driving fun. When I was test driving and comparing cars, I considered the VW Passat TDI (Diesel), which reportedly gets a legitimate 38-40 MPG and is more enjoyable to drive. However, I ultimately chose the Fusion for its higher reliability. Looking forward to sharing more updates soon!

When it was time for a new car, we had our sights set on a Fusion. Although we weren't initially looking for a hybrid, the dealer didn't have the color combination and options we wanted in a non-hybrid SE. However, they did have them in the SE hybrid, so we decided to give it a try. The pricing was right on top of non-hybrid models, and with the trade, discount, and rebates, we got a deal that we couldn't refuse. Needless to say, we bought it that day and have no regrets. Overall, the Fusion is a wonderful car. We took it on a long trip from central Virginia to Charleston, SC, the second week we owned it, and it proved to be most comfortable, far and away better than the '07 Buick we traded for it. The seats were just plain excellent, even the side bolsters were not an issue and held us firmly yet comfortably (did I mention that I am I must say that I was a bit concerned about the hilly terrain, but our recent trip to northeast Tennessee to visit family put those concerns to rest. Our Fusion proved more than capable of handling the task, even with two additional passengers in the car. Now, onto the most berated feature - MyFord Touch. I personally don't have a problem with it. While some people say it's not intuitive enough, I find that reading the owner's manual helps a lot. Bluetooth pairing is a breeze and Sync even talks you through it. I can easily change radio stations, toggle between other audio functions, and make phone calls without any issues, even with my heavy hillbilly drawl. Changing climate controls is also no great issue as long as you follow the directions. The panel buttons are within easy reach, so there are no real issues. The only real issue is that if you're a gauge watcher like me, it can be a little distracting with the gauge switching between gas and battery operation. Otherwise, I'm completely happy with the car. The bonus is an 8-year/100k warranty on the hybrid parts, so there are no worries about battery life! It's been six months since I got the car, and I still have no complaints. The MPG has even crept a little higher to 44.6 mpg. With gas at $1.40 in central VA, who's complaining? Most of my friends who thought Fusions were just rental fleet cars can't believe the content and comfort of this car. With cheap gas, maybe you don't need a hybrid, but if I were to trade today, I'd get another one.Even my friend who bought a Civic Hybrid around the same time I bought the Fusion wishes they had looked at Fords! After two and a half years, there is nothing new to report, and I still love the car. It's bank vault solid at close to 30K with no faults or trips to the dealer other than routine services. I am very picky, especially early in ownership, to uncover any faults that may pose a problem later, but there is nothing to nitpick over. Currently, I am at an indicated 45.3 mpg in combined city/highway driving. I will say that on a recent trip to New England, we spent more on tolls from central Virginia to New York than gasoline. The one pitfall of the Fusion Hybrid is trunk space, as the batteries take up a pretty good chunk. However, we can still fit two very large suitcases, beach chairs, etc. in the trunk for a week at the beach, so maybe this is a small nit after all. Cheers!
