The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-sized Ford Fusion sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford, now in its second generation. A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, was released in the U.S. in February 2013.

The first generation was launched to the U.S. market in March 2009 for model year 2010, together with its badge-engineered variants, the Mercury Milan Hybrid and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The second generation was launched under the Ford and Lincoln brands for model year 2013, went on sale in the U.S. in October 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at 39 mpg‑US (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg‑imp) combined city/highway. The second generation hybrid improved the fuel economy rating to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp) for combined city/highway driving. The EPA rated the Energi's combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode at 88 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPG-e) (2.7 L gasoline equivalent/100 km; 106 mpg-imp). In hybrid operation (charge-sustaining mode), the Energi has a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg‑US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg‑imp).

The Fusion Hybrid has won the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award, and the entire 2013 Ford Fusion line-up, including the Fusion hybrid and plug-in variants, won the 2013 Green Car of the Year. As of December 2016, over 285,000 units of the Fusion hybrid family have been sold in the United States since 2009, including the plug-in hybrid variant. As of December 2016, sales of the Fusion Energi totaled 43,327 units delivered in its main market, the U.S.

Latest negative Ford Fusion hybrid car reviews

  1. Jaquan Huel 2025-10-15

    Vehicle year: 2010

I've had my car for only 4 months and unfortunately, I've already had to make 3 trips to the shop. During the first trip, the check engine light came on and a faulty part needed to be replaced. On the second trip, the check engine light came on again and the computer needed to be recalibrated. During the third trip, the car shut down in the middle of the highway, which was quite scary. Luckily, the car warned me to pull over safely as soon as possible. The best part is that I was able to reboot it like my computer and it worked. Although I've had some issues with my Fusion Hybrid, I still believe that it's a good car overall. However, I would advise against buying a Ford, especially if you're looking for a safe option.

  2. Julien Greenholt 2025-09-19

    Vehicle year: 2013

After owning my previous car for three years, I decided it was time to trade it in. Although it had a few issues, including a leaking sunroof, a faulty battery, and a complete control module replacement, I was able to get 37 mpg out of it. However, I was looking for something with a bit more power and reliability, which is why I decided to purchase a new non-hybrid Honda mid-size sedan. One of the biggest reasons for the trade-in was the lack of power in my previous car, which made it difficult to accelerate from a stop light or merge into traffic at highway speeds. Additionally, the 12-volt battery had died after only two years, which was a bit frustrating. Despite these issues, I was still able to enjoy the car until a major electrical fault occurred while driving. Although the dealer was able to fix the issue, it was a bit concerning that all safety features were inoperable during the incident. Overall, I'm excited to have a new car that I can rely on and enjoy without any major issues.I hope you're doing well. I was wondering if you had any advice for me. I had some water damage to my car's computer and I'm worried about the repair costs now that the warranty has expired. Unfortunately, this car hasn't been the best investment for me. While I understand that every car has its faults, this one seems to have more than its fair share. The lack of power and poor fuel economy are common issues with this car, so I would recommend selecting a different engine. Even if it had gotten the advertised 47 mpg (later revised to 42 by Ford), the cost savings in fuel does not equal the cost savings of selecting a standard engine instead of a hybrid. Additionally, the car still has three outstanding safety recalls (including the Takata airbag issue) that the dealer can't seem to find parts to fix. Out of the twelve cars I've owned throughout my life, this one has been the worst, and I will never again consider purchasing a Ford vehicle.

  3. Ernesto Kassulke 2025-09-17

    Vehicle year: 2014

I recently experienced some issues with my Fusion's transmission after 116,000 miles. Unfortunately, the repair cost was estimated at $5500, which was not feasible for me. I decided to part ways with the car since I believe that if such a major component fails so early in the car's life, it may indicate other potential issues. Although I initially enjoyed the car's gas mileage and handling, I am now dissatisfied with it. When I informed the dealership that I would not be repairing the car, they offered to sell me a new Ford, but I politely declined. Thank you for your understanding.

  4. Xavier Weimann 2025-08-15

    Vehicle year: 2015

I have put a lot of miles on my car under various conditions. Although I live in Southern California, I cannot attest to significant changes in weather. When I bought this car, it had a rated MPG of 47/47. Ford sent me a check for $750 when they corrected the ratings. While this did not cover the amount of savings I had anticipated, it was still a nice gesture. The car is beautiful and has had minimal problems. It takes some getting used to its size as it feels like a boat. The departure angles on inclines/declines are not good due to the air dam. Unfortunately, my front paint has already begun to wear on the front bumper from so much driving. As of May 2018, I have relocated to Texas and still driving the car. Repair costs have been next to none outside of general maintenance. I barely use MyFord Touch w/ Navigation thanks to Bluetooth/Cellphone. The vehicle has held up extremely well, and the gas mileage is the same if not better than when I originally purchased it. You have to drive it like your grandma stole it to see the MPG benefit. I have had about 4 recalls, which were easy to have done and nothing that prevented me from driving the Fusion on a daily basis.

  5. Scot Boehm 2025-07-28

I am confident in saying that the Ford Fusion Hybrid is a car that has a lot of potential. It comes with a range of upgraded accessories such as navigation, SYNC, and smart gauges, which are all impressive features. The car also has a great fuel economy, averaging over 40 mpg combined. However, I must say that I am disappointed with the recent experience I had with the car. After only 2 months of use, the car would not start, and despite being in the Ford service shop for 30 days, the problem has not been diagnosed. It is concerning that such a hidden defect exists in a car that is on the market, and it is disappointing that Ford customer service has been unresponsive. I would advise potential buyers to be aware of this issue before purchasing the Ford Fusion Hybrid.

This is my "work" car, purchased for that purpose.Although I have driven a series of employer-provided vehicles over the years, (Ford and GM sedans), this is the first purchase for my own use.The Fusion is, (I am embarrassed to say), the first American-branded vehicle I have ever owned, and I am 50 years old.I drive a mix of 70-75 mph highway, congested city and rural two lane.By way of background, I am fussy and a bit of a "car guy."(Other vehicles:Miata 6M and Acura TSX 5A.)Also, I have prior experience with Toyota hybrids.I like them, and have driven approximately 10K miles in a Gen 3 Prius and a 2009 Camry hybridThat said, here are my observations at the 12K mark:

Hi there! Just wanted to give you a quick update on the Fusion Hybrid. I'm happy to report that everything is still going great with the car, even at 35K miles. The only issue I had was a malfunction in the retention spring in the front passenger grab bar, but that was an easy fix. Overall, I'm still extremely pleased with my purchase - no squeaks, rattles, leaks, or malfunctions to speak of!

I'm currently sitting at 125k miles on my 2010 Fusion Hybrid, all black and fully loaded. I couldn't be happier with this car, especially compared to my previous jalopy. I average 42 - 48mpg in Spring, Summer (depending on AC use) and Fall. In Winter, it's closer to 33 - 35mpg, depending on how cold it is. I've had zero trips to the dealer for repairs as nothing has failed in this vehicle. It's been scheduled maintenance all the way, combined with stellar MPG = very low cost. I bought this car one year used. Technology-wise, it's held up very well to what new models have. I have the blind spot sensors, backup camera (using a large 8

I've been driving this car for about 3 weeks now and have already clocked up 1000 miles. I must say, I'm really pleased with the vehicle so far. Over this period, I've managed to achieve an average fuel efficiency of 41.1 mpg with sensible driving (not hypermiling). On shorter city trips, I've even managed to get around 55 mpg with very careful (hypermiling type) driving. However, I believe that if one drives the Fusion Hybrid without paying any attention to the fact that it's a hybrid, then the average fuel economy is probably going to be about 36-37 mpg. From a feature set point of view, this vehicle has a lot to offer. I've previously owned a Toyota Prius, which I liked a lot, but the Fusion is just in a different category. It's unfair to compare it to a Prius, but that's my only point of reference.

Although I have some concerns about certain aspects of this vehicle, I am confident in my assessment. After only 2300 miles, I experienced my second service engine light, which is disappointing. Additionally, the advertised 41mpg is not accurate, as a full tank only yields an estimated 535 miles, which equates to 31.5 miles per gallon. However, I have found that I am able to achieve better than 31.5 mpg. While I am frustrated with the need for another service appointment, I am confident that the EV mode can work up to 47mph, albeit only at coasting speeds. Overall, I believe that this vehicle has potential, but it is important to be aware of its limitations and potential issues.
