Ford Fusion problems

The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants. The Fusion was manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.

Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005. The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour). The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus. In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo. Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region. The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.

The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S. in February 2013. The entire 2013 Fusion line-up was awarded with the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2019, the Fusion was the seventh-best selling car in the United States.

Common Ford Fusion problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Ford Fusion cars, here are some common problems reported:

  • Failed Throttle Body: Owners of Ford Fusion models from 2010 to 2016 have reported problems with the throttle body, causing jerks while driving and engine stalling. Repairing or replacing the throttle body can cost around $1,000 for parts and labor.
  • Brake Issues: Fusion models from 2006 to 2010 faced brake problems, requiring extra pressure to stop the car. Some drivers experienced brake failure mid-drive, leading to extended stopping distances. This issue was linked to faults in the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit, necessitating a recall by Ford.
  • Engine Oil Leaks: The first vehicles of the second generation of Ford Fusions encountered engine oil leak problems, which posed safety risks due to the potential for fires. Ford issued recalls to address this issue.
  • Transmission Problems: Owners reported issues with the automatic transmission of Ford Fusion cars, including harsh or delayed shifting, revving high without shifting, and delayed shifts. Repairs for these transmission problems varied from software upgrades to complete transmission rebuilds.
  • Squeaks, Creaks, and Leaks: As the mileage increases, owners tend to experience squeaking noises while driving, creaking over bumps, and transmission oil leaks. These issues can arise around 100,000 miles and may require repairs costing between $100-$250.
  • Steering Issues: Steering problems, including power steering malfunctions and steering inefficiency, have been reported by owners. Power steering failures can lead to steering difficulties and safety concerns, with repairs costing an average of around $1,600.
  • Swollen Lug Nuts: Some owners reported problems with swollen lug nuts on Ford Fusion cars, which can make it challenging to remove the lug nuts. This issue is a result of Ford's design process and can be inconvenient for owners.

These common problems reported by Ford Fusion owners highlight various mechanical and safety issues that have affected the driving experience and reliability of these vehicles.

Ford Fusion

What years did Ford Fusion have problems?

Ah, the much-maligned 2009 Ford Fusion. Unfortunately, it joins the “Ford Fusion years to avoid” category alongside its 2006-2007 siblings when it comes to reliability. In fact, it holds the dubious honor of having the worst reliability score of all Fusion models.

Is A Ford Fusion a reliable Car?

Overall, the Ford Fusion is a reliable ride that is fun to drive and own. If you're hunting for a reliable choice from this discontinued vehicle, there are many choices available to make the most of your investment. Whether you have a family to cart around or need a commuter vehicle, the Fusion is worth it.

Does a Ford Fusion have any issues?

We talked earlier about first-year problems, and the refreshed 2010 Fusion is infamous for steering troubles. These are well-known issues. So, 2010 is definitely one of the Ford Fusion years to avoid. Steering problems continued into 2011 and 2012 but to a lesser extent.

What are the cons of a Ford Fusion?

The base engine in the Ford Fusion is solid, but it can be underwhelming. It offers 175 horsepower, but the Fusion struggles to accelerate like competitors. You won't notice it on a commute, but it will become apparent if you want to speed up to pass someone on the highway.

Ford Fusion 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-11
  • VIN: 3FAHP0JG9AR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: As I was driving the vehicle, my ABS and all other brake service lights came on. I stopped driving the car except to take it to the dealership to be assessed and repaired. I had to have a new HCU and ABS module installed as well as brake fluid flush. After driving it off the lot I realized I had to push the brakes all the way to floor and it was still slow to stop. I took it back to the dealership and they bled the brakes again. It still doesn't brake as well as it did before incident. I had these repairs performed in Jan 2024 and recently found out that in April 2021 there was a recall for this same exact problem. I was never notified by mail as I usually am for recalls. I paid for these repairs out of pocket and believe this should have been covered under the recall from 2021. I feel this could've turned out much worse if I had continued driving the car. I would like this to be further investigated as to whether this falls under the recall.
Ford Fusion 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-01
  • VIN: 3FAHP0HA5AR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The throttle body failed. It is not available for inspection because it was replaced. While driving on a high-speed road, the engine felt like it shuddered, and the car lost engine power and would no longer accelerate. At the same time, the light shaped like a wrench came on. Our safety was therefore put at risk because we could now barely accelerate, and could easily have been rear-ended. The problem was confirmed and repaired by an independent service center. After doing the repair, the service center informed us that there was a Ford Customer Satisfaction Service Bulletin (13NO3) for this problem. We called Ford about this bulletin and were told that the Bulletin was limited to ten years or 150,000 miles, whichever came first. Even though our car is over ten years old, it only has 87,000 miles on it.

Latest negative Ford Fusion car reviews

  1. Alf Hudson 2025-08-16

    Vehicle year: 2017

My car is raining inside and the water is coming in from random places, soaking the interior of the car. I have had to take it back to the dealership four times for water leaking inside the car and the passenger side window not staying up. It's frustrating that the car is not even a year old with a little more than 4,100 miles and I have had nothing but a headache with it. However, I'm glad that I haven't had an accident. Can you please help me resolve this issue? Thank you.

  2. Horacio McLaughlin 2025-08-14

    Vehicle year: 2014

I've had my 2014 2.0 AWD Fusion for over a year now and it's been a great highway cruiser for work. Although I rent quite a few cars for work, I still managed to put 24k miles on my car in 1 year. What I love about it is how comfortable and quiet it is to drive over long distances. The front seats are my favorite part as they are contoured and support my back while driving. The stereo sounds quite nice and the trunk is huge, allowing me to haul all kinds of stuff that I couldn't before. The backup camera/sensors are also quite convenient. However, I must say that the MPG is nowhere near what Ford claims. The Fusion is EPA rated at 31 MPG, but I'm lucky to hit 28 MPG on the highway, with 25-26 being typical and I have even seen as low as 22 MPG. Needless to say, I am disappointed. I have even tried overinflating the tires by a few PSI to see if that helps, but to no avail. Premium gas also does not make a difference. The transmission is probably the worst that I have driven. The common hard shift between 2nd and 3rd is almost always present and the dealer said this is all operating within specification according to their computer. Now, if I put the car into sport mode and let the car shift on its own, it feels like a rookie manual transmission driver. It constantly jerks while down-shifting and up-shifting. This also raises concerns with long term transmission reliability as the shocks to the transmission cannot be good in the long term. Lastly, the automatic HVAC controls just don't work well, especially in the months where heat is required. What happens is that after the car warms up, the cabin temperature starts blowing cold air. I understand that this can be frustrating. Additionally, the fan controls do not go to a low enough setting when controlled manually. Regarding the tires, I agree that Ford put poor tires on the car for snow traction. As for the engine, I have read other reviews of the 2.0 Fusion and it seems underpowered for the engine rating. With regards to the windows, it is not possible to just put the driver's window down on its own and drive. If this is done, there is a horrible buffeting that happens inside the cabin. The manual even calls this out and the solution is to open another window. This just shows poor engineering on Ford's part. As for Sync, I understand that touch controls can be frustrating and that tactile buttons will always work better. The same goes for touch screens. It forces you to be very precise and that means more time with eyes not on the road. I know there are the steering wheel controls and the arrow buttons are not responsive enough and it still means time with eyes not on the road to follow the screen by the speedometer. I will avoid any vehicle with touch controls in the future. Finally, regarding visibility, I agree that the A and C pillars are quite large and do hamper visibility. The rearview mirror also does not adjust enough for my liking. I just cannot tilt it high enough for my liking and I have the driver's seat in its lowest position. In conclusion, while I would not buy a Fusion again, I understand that it may not make financial sense to sell it and buy another car.

I purchased this brand new car after doing my research, thinking it would be a great investment. I even got it fully loaded, planning on keeping it for a long time. Unfortunately, only two months in, the fuel system started failing and I had to replace it. After that, there were multiple recalls that kept showing up, which was frustrating. The horn and speaker also died, and the check engine light kept coming on, even though the car only had 15,000 miles on it. Finally, the transmission started acting up, shifting so hard that it felt like I was driving a stick shift. I took it in for repairs, but even after reprogramming and replacing everything, the hard shifting persisted. The doors also wouldn't lock due to bad wiring. I didn't want to take any chances, so I took it back. The car drove nicely for only three days before the hard shifting started again, and it didn't even have 20,000 miles on it. It's a shame. I would advise against purchasing this car, as it has not been reliable. Ford should take it back.

I purchased my first Fusion, a 2010 SEL, brand new and it never gave me any issues in the 130,000 miles I drove it. I used it for my daily commute of over 100 miles and kept up with regular oil changes as recommended by the car's oil life tracking meter. When I decided to trade it in for a 2016 Fusion SE, I was disappointed with the low trade-in value offered by the dealer, but I took advantage of Ford's 0% interest rate for 72 months. Although I have only driven the 2016 model for 1000 miles, I am currently getting 32.2 mpg, which is slightly better than my old Fusion. However, I have noticed that the advertised fuel efficiency of 36 mpg is not accurate and the car is affected by strong winds. Additionally, the road and air noise is quite loud and the seating is uncomfortable for someone who is 6'2

I purchased the new twin turbo Fusion Sport with great excitement, even going so far as to have the dealer bring in the exact model I wanted from another state. However, after experiencing several issues with the car, including windows not staying up and coolant and oil leaks, I became increasingly concerned. Despite multiple trips to the dealership for repairs, the car's engine ultimately failed, leaving me with no choice but to return it to the dealership. Fortunately, Ford was able to purchase the car back from me and I have since moved on to a new vehicle.

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Fusion. It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with both your 2013 and 2015 models. Based on your experience, you would definitely recommend this car to others, which is fantastic! It's a great daily driver and is fuel efficient, which is always a plus. I understand that you wish it had a bit more power under the hood, and that the black color can be difficult to keep clean. However, when it's washed up, it looks amazing! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Fusion.

The car rides like a vehicle that costs over 45k, which is impressive for its category. The Microsoft Sync system is straightforward and easy to use. The car and Sync system have an extensive range of functions. The adjustable ambient interior lighting is a great feature, especially at night when you can choose your preferred color. The Ecoboost turbo performs well without being too loud in the cabin. The sport mode with the better fuel map is excellent for passing or accelerating past other drivers. Overall, the car is fun and comfortable, even with two car seats (one forward-facing and one rear-facing). Considering the cost, it's a pretty sweet deal.

You've got a great car there! It's impressive that you've only driven around 22000 miles and are already getting 19-23 miles per gallon in the city and approximately 31 miles per gallon on the highway. The car drives smoothly and quietly, making it feel like it's worth much more than it actually is. It's definitely a lot of car for the money. I'm not surprised that you've received many compliments on it. The only downside is that the front passenger seat sits too low, but that can easily be fixed by ordering the next one with a power passenger seat. It's great to hear that there are no rattles and that all the electronics are working perfectly. Overall, you should be very satisfied with your purchase. I'm glad you chose the Fusion over the Toyota Camry, as it's definitely a much better value for your money.

Congratulations on your first car! It's wonderful to hear that you love it and that it has been reliable so far. It's taken you on some amazing adventures, including a cross-country trip from Florida to California, without any issues. The interior is great, with nicely padded plastic surfaces and durable leather seating that has held up well in the Texas heat. The car handles very well, with a brilliant turning radius and responsive brakes that inspire confidence. The blind spot monitoring, rear-view camera, and cross-traffic alert are great features that provide an additional layer of protection. Although the rain-sensing wipers can be hit or miss, overall you are extremely satisfied with this vehicle and plan to keep it for at least 10 years. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I currently have 29100 miles on this car. I'm someone who can't stand any rattles or body shake when the road becomes uneven. However, this car feels like it's cut from one piece of stone, even after almost 30,000 miles! It's just so solid! The brakes are excellent and still have almost 50% left on the pads. The handling is excellent and the ride is smooth with amazingly little road noise, wind noise, or engine noise. It's just a quiet ride! The 2.0 ecoboost is excellent and has been averaging 27.7 mpg combined. The car has not been into the shop once for anything other than scheduled maintenance. So, for me, reliability has been excellent! Update - I now have 76k on the car and I'm still completely happy with it. No reliability issues whatsoever. I replaced the OEM tires at 50k and I'm still on OEM brake pads with over 10% left. What a great car this has been!! Update - I currently have about 99k on the car and I'm happy to report that there are no issues to speak of.
