Ford Fusion problems
The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants. The Fusion was manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.
Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005. The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour). The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus. In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo. Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region. The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.
The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S. in February 2013. The entire 2013 Fusion line-up was awarded with the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2019, the Fusion was the seventh-best selling car in the United States.

Common Ford Fusion problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Ford Fusion cars, here are some common problems reported:
- Failed Throttle Body: Owners of Ford Fusion models from 2010 to 2016 have reported problems with the throttle body, causing jerks while driving and engine stalling. Repairing or replacing the throttle body can cost around $1,000 for parts and labor.
- Brake Issues: Fusion models from 2006 to 2010 faced brake problems, requiring extra pressure to stop the car. Some drivers experienced brake failure mid-drive, leading to extended stopping distances. This issue was linked to faults in the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit, necessitating a recall by Ford.
- Engine Oil Leaks: The first vehicles of the second generation of Ford Fusions encountered engine oil leak problems, which posed safety risks due to the potential for fires. Ford issued recalls to address this issue.
- Transmission Problems: Owners reported issues with the automatic transmission of Ford Fusion cars, including harsh or delayed shifting, revving high without shifting, and delayed shifts. Repairs for these transmission problems varied from software upgrades to complete transmission rebuilds.
- Squeaks, Creaks, and Leaks: As the mileage increases, owners tend to experience squeaking noises while driving, creaking over bumps, and transmission oil leaks. These issues can arise around 100,000 miles and may require repairs costing between $100-$250.
- Steering Issues: Steering problems, including power steering malfunctions and steering inefficiency, have been reported by owners. Power steering failures can lead to steering difficulties and safety concerns, with repairs costing an average of around $1,600.
- Swollen Lug Nuts: Some owners reported problems with swollen lug nuts on Ford Fusion cars, which can make it challenging to remove the lug nuts. This issue is a result of Ford's design process and can be inconvenient for owners.
These common problems reported by Ford Fusion owners highlight various mechanical and safety issues that have affected the driving experience and reliability of these vehicles.
What years did Ford Fusion have problems?
Ah, the much-maligned 2009 Ford Fusion. Unfortunately, it joins the “Ford Fusion years to avoid” category alongside its 2006-2007 siblings when it comes to reliability. In fact, it holds the dubious honor of having the worst reliability score of all Fusion models.
Is A Ford Fusion a reliable Car?
Overall, the Ford Fusion is a reliable ride that is fun to drive and own. If you're hunting for a reliable choice from this discontinued vehicle, there are many choices available to make the most of your investment. Whether you have a family to cart around or need a commuter vehicle, the Fusion is worth it.
Does a Ford Fusion have any issues?
We talked earlier about first-year problems, and the refreshed 2010 Fusion is infamous for steering troubles. These are well-known issues. So, 2010 is definitely one of the Ford Fusion years to avoid. Steering problems continued into 2011 and 2012 but to a lesser extent.
What are the cons of a Ford Fusion?
The base engine in the Ford Fusion is solid, but it can be underwhelming. It offers 175 horsepower, but the Fusion struggles to accelerate like competitors. You won't notice it on a commute, but it will become apparent if you want to speed up to pass someone on the highway.

Ford Fusion 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-11
- VIN: 3FAHP0JG9AR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: As I was driving the vehicle, my ABS and all other brake service lights came on. I stopped driving the car except to take it to the dealership to be assessed and repaired. I had to have a new HCU and ABS module installed as well as brake fluid flush. After driving it off the lot I realized I had to push the brakes all the way to floor and it was still slow to stop. I took it back to the dealership and they bled the brakes again. It still doesn't brake as well as it did before incident. I had these repairs performed in Jan 2024 and recently found out that in April 2021 there was a recall for this same exact problem. I was never notified by mail as I usually am for recalls. I paid for these repairs out of pocket and believe this should have been covered under the recall from 2021. I feel this could've turned out much worse if I had continued driving the car. I would like this to be further investigated as to whether this falls under the recall.
Ford Fusion 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-01
- VIN: 3FAHP0HA5AR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The throttle body failed. It is not available for inspection because it was replaced. While driving on a high-speed road, the engine felt like it shuddered, and the car lost engine power and would no longer accelerate. At the same time, the light shaped like a wrench came on. Our safety was therefore put at risk because we could now barely accelerate, and could easily have been rear-ended. The problem was confirmed and repaired by an independent service center. After doing the repair, the service center informed us that there was a Ford Customer Satisfaction Service Bulletin (13NO3) for this problem. We called Ford about this bulletin and were told that the Bulletin was limited to ten years or 150,000 miles, whichever came first. Even though our car is over ten years old, it only has 87,000 miles on it.

Drove this car as a rental. Went back to buy it! I was not in the market for a car but I totally fell in love with this car. It’s so smooth and classy looking. The eco boost is awesome. 😍 Love it. Ford should keep this.

I purchased this car after owning a 2007 Fusion that never required any repairs beyond regular maintenance such as tire and brake replacements. With 22k miles on the new car, I only experienced one issue with a faulty seatbelt in the back, which the dealer promptly replaced. The new Fusion is a definite win for EcoBoost, as it gets 27-28 MPG with 240Hp (2.0l turbo), compared to my previous Fusion's 26 MPG (2.3l 4-cyl manual transmission) on my commute to work. Although my Ford Touch can be slow at times, I still love it. The heated and cooled seats are amazing, but the heated steering wheel could use some improvement as only the outer rim heats up. This is the first automatic transmission that I have not disliked. I usually prefer manuals, but my wife convinced me to try an automatic since she cannot/will not drive a manual. Update: After almost 40k miles, I have not encountered any new issues. I simply change the oil, fill up with gas, and drive. Once the construction on my way to work is finished, my gas mileage should improve. Sitting idle in traffic jams does not help. With almost 50k miles, everything still works perfectly. I love the cooled seats, which were definitely worth the investment. During a long trip, I averaged 32 MPG over 2000 miles, which is not bad. The rain-sensing windshield wipers work very well, but they struggle with fine road spray after a rain has stopped.

Great car! I'm so glad it was delivered and I absolutely love it. The styling is fantastic, especially up front, and the dynamics are super. It's excellent all around!

Your wife's new Fusion is fantastic! It's the smoothest and quietest Ford I've ever ridden in. As a lifelong Ford fan, I've always found their cars to be a bit noisy, but the new Fusion is a game-changer. The V6 engine provides more than enough power, and the gas mileage is impressive, averaging around 26 in the city and 28.5 on the highway when new. I'm sure it's even better now! The Fusion is a joy to drive, with a tight and well-made feel that makes every trip a pleasure.

I've owned a few Audi A6 vehicles when I was a consultant, but since then I've owned several Fords in a row. I've stuck with Ford because their cars are built well and have outstanding reliability. I've only had to perform routine maintenance and the Ford Dealer prices and customer service have been very good. I recently traded in a 2015 Fusion Titanium AWD for a 2017 Platinum AWD and I have no complaints about either car. The Platinum interior looks and feels luxurious, like I'm driving an Audi. The side profile with the polished aluminum wheels looks sharp and the LED running lights, turn signals and headlights are impressive. The new twin scroll 2.0 ecoboost is even more refined than the previous one in my 2015 Titanium, and it's just a tick faster but it's noticeable. The sport mode is where you can really tell the difference. The sport mode on my 2015 was only a slight difference, but on this 2017 Platinum, you can really feel the difference as you accelerate. The car is buttoned down and rides and drives like I'm in my previous Audis. One disappointment is the tires. It would be better to come with Michelin Primacy MXM4, like the Lincoln MKZ, and not Continental tires. The Michelin's ride even smoother without sacrificing handling. I could have purchased a low-end Lincoln MKZ cheaper than the Fusion Platinum AWD. However, it wouldn't have all the safety equipment, the leather dash, the premium leather seats and doors, and AWD. I'm very happy with my fourth Ford in a row. I wish the mileage was a bit better, but the 2-liter turbo is very refined and feels better than the V6 in my Taurus.

I have brought my brand new vehicle in at least seven times (probably more) in roughly two years. That is absolutely unacceptable for a new car. Below are the major issues that I've brought my vehicle into the dealership for. It's frustrating to not be able to trust this car to be reliable in the future. At this point, I am fed up and on the verge of trading this car in. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Ford to anyone. The regional area managers keep referring me back to their dealerships and they can't seem to correct the numerous issues with their product. All I've gotten from Ford is a Premium Care Extended Service Plan for 5 years 75k for all of this....thanks for nothing! There are obviously issues with Ford and their designs/quality. The 635f transmission on this car, especially, is problematic. Here's the list of my troubles with this: On February 5, 2015 - My vehicle was leaking transmission fluid at 6,412 miles. The front axle shaft assembly needed to be replaced. February 21, 2015 - Transmission was making a grinding noise, shifts rough randomly usually 1st to 2nd, flares shifting when cold, slams into gear from park to reverse randomly. (The dealership said they couldn't reproduce the problem.) May 16, 2015 - Weather stripping on rear door was loose and the p/s wheel well cover was loose due to missing pins. June 16, 2015 - Light sensor was inoperable at 9,255 miles. (The dealership checked the transmission for the same issue as above, but gave the same answer.) July 11, 2015 - I brought the vehicle in for a power steering recall. The mileage display faded in areas when it was hot inside. (The dealership checked the transmission for the same issue as above, but gave the same answer. They were also unable to replicate the mileage display problem.) On February 20th, the rear headliner was hanging down. The audio speaker on the passenger side makes a vibrating noise during certain bass frequencies. The dealership disconnected it and then plugged it back in, but they were not able to correct the issue. Resetting the ACM for the transmission helped for about one week...Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to bring to your attention that the passenger side speaker has been consistently sounding terrible when wet and cold, even after it was replaced. Additionally, I've been experiencing some issues with the transmission and mileage display. I've had to bring my car in for repairs seven times already, and while some of those visits may have been unnecessary, there are still some lingering issues even after 16,000 miles. I would really appreciate your help in resolving these problems. Thank you!

As a car enthusiast, I've had the pleasure of driving many different cars. However, this particular rental has been quite frustrating for me. Unfortunately, I found it uncomfortable to get in and out of, and the legroom was quite limited. Additionally, the brake pedal was positioned too high up from the accelerator, which made it difficult to operate. Despite these issues, the car is well-equipped for its price point and has a generous trunk space. My wife and I are eagerly awaiting the return of our RAV4 hybrid, but we appreciate the backup camera and the bright LED brake lights of this Ford Fusion. The finishes are nice, and the dash area has plenty of information. Although the ride can be a bit rough, the car handles well. Overall, if you're looking for a smooth ride, this may not be the best option for you. However, if you're looking for a car with great features and finishes, this could be a good choice. The SE has good equipment compared to others in its class. However, when I priced out the higher-end models or added additional features, I was surprised by the cost. Before making a purchase, I highly encourage you to look around and even consider renting one. Personally, I am glad I never entertained the idea of buying one of these. Although my previous car, the CMAX, had its fair share of problems and sounded like a hupmobile, it still provided more comfort than the SE.

This car has a history of coolant leaks and multiple recalls for engine fires for the 13-14 year models. I had the coolant level sensor install recall completed, but unfortunately, the car cannot handle the boost pressure and now has a cylinder coolant leak. Long story short, it is out of warranty and they are asking for $2100 to tear down and find the issue, not including the price for repairs. Although their recalls do not find and fix the underlying cause, they do a little more to prevent liability on Ford. The sensor installation is to notify you when the coolant level is low to prevent engine fires, but this does not fix the underlying cause for the leak. It only tells you there is a problem. They added it because they know there will be a leak and to prevent them from having to buy back a burned-up car. When you know there is a problem, you take it in for repair, which unfortunately lines their pockets.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Ford Fusion. While I had some issues with the car, I would like to advise anyone looking to buy a car to do their research and read the manual before making a purchase. In my opinion, it's important to have a keyhole in your car. Technology has come a long way, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. I had some trouble with the batteries in my Fusion, and it caused me to lose some time and sleep. However, I am hopeful that the lemon law will help me out. Despite my issues, I am confident that Ford will take care of me and pay off my note. Thank you for listening to my story and I hope you have a great day!Without the recalls and issues, I need to reconsider how things on the car function and perform. For example, the windshield wipers only have three settings that do not even make a difference with a semi-hard rain and set on high. The cruise control has jumped from being set on 60 to 85 without warning. It gets even better, please continue reading. Sitting at a red light like any other day with my foot on the brake, the car literally shifted itself into park. The same thing happened when I was pulling out of my driveway in reverse, taking my kids to school. My AC has gone in and out, and the screen for my camera and radio, along with all my buttons on the steering wheel and dash, seem to have a mind of their own. My car has been making a slight missing noise, just like many experiences with Ford vehicles we've owned within the past 10 years. But last week, while sitting in my car, I noticed more issues. When I was idling, it started making a loud pulsing vibrating sound. Considering my own experience with this car over the past weeks, I'm not really sure if I will go with Ford after they pay off the car in the next long and dreadful weeks to come. I have really considered a Tundra truck that I would settle on being a couple of years older than a brand new 2017. Honestly, I don't have to have anything brand new and I really don't want one. If only the world was like it was when life was really still considered good. Back then, vehicles were actually made to last for many years to come, and they were also a lot safer than these nice plastic button-operated good-for-nothing toy cars. My last statement/request is that only when these vehicles with no keyholes that operate off of buttons become the first flying vehicles, only then might I consider owning one.

The engine powering this car is well-documented for going into limp mode, which means sudden loss of throttle response. Despite having found codes, the service advisor informed that nothing more would be done since they couldn't 'replicate' the condition. However, I am confident that the issue will be resolved and I will not have to pay off this car and buy another.
