Ford Fusion problems

The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants. The Fusion was manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.
Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005. The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour). The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus. In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo. Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region. The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.
The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S. in February 2013. The entire 2013 Fusion line-up was awarded with the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2019, the Fusion was the seventh-best selling car in the United States.

Common Ford Fusion problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Ford Fusion cars, here are some common problems reported:
- Failed Throttle Body: Owners of Ford Fusion models from 2010 to 2016 have reported problems with the throttle body, causing jerks while driving and engine stalling. Repairing or replacing the throttle body can cost around $1,000 for parts and labor.
- Brake Issues: Fusion models from 2006 to 2010 faced brake problems, requiring extra pressure to stop the car. Some drivers experienced brake failure mid-drive, leading to extended stopping distances. This issue was linked to faults in the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit, necessitating a recall by Ford.
- Engine Oil Leaks: The first vehicles of the second generation of Ford Fusions encountered engine oil leak problems, which posed safety risks due to the potential for fires. Ford issued recalls to address this issue.
- Transmission Problems: Owners reported issues with the automatic transmission of Ford Fusion cars, including harsh or delayed shifting, revving high without shifting, and delayed shifts. Repairs for these transmission problems varied from software upgrades to complete transmission rebuilds.
- Squeaks, Creaks, and Leaks: As the mileage increases, owners tend to experience squeaking noises while driving, creaking over bumps, and transmission oil leaks. These issues can arise around 100,000 miles and may require repairs costing between $100-$250.
- Steering Issues: Steering problems, including power steering malfunctions and steering inefficiency, have been reported by owners. Power steering failures can lead to steering difficulties and safety concerns, with repairs costing an average of around $1,600.
- Swollen Lug Nuts: Some owners reported problems with swollen lug nuts on Ford Fusion cars, which can make it challenging to remove the lug nuts. This issue is a result of Ford's design process and can be inconvenient for owners.
These common problems reported by Ford Fusion owners highlight various mechanical and safety issues that have affected the driving experience and reliability of these vehicles.
What years did Ford Fusion have problems?
Ah, the much-maligned 2009 Ford Fusion. Unfortunately, it joins the “Ford Fusion years to avoid” category alongside its 2006-2007 siblings when it comes to reliability. In fact, it holds the dubious honor of having the worst reliability score of all Fusion models.
Is A Ford Fusion a reliable Car?
Overall, the Ford Fusion is a reliable ride that is fun to drive and own. If you're hunting for a reliable choice from this discontinued vehicle, there are many choices available to make the most of your investment. Whether you have a family to cart around or need a commuter vehicle, the Fusion is worth it.
Does a Ford Fusion have any issues?
We talked earlier about first-year problems, and the refreshed 2010 Fusion is infamous for steering troubles. These are well-known issues. So, 2010 is definitely one of the Ford Fusion years to avoid. Steering problems continued into 2011 and 2012 but to a lesser extent.
What are the cons of a Ford Fusion?
The base engine in the Ford Fusion is solid, but it can be underwhelming. It offers 175 horsepower, but the Fusion struggles to accelerate like competitors. You won't notice it on a commute, but it will become apparent if you want to speed up to pass someone on the highway.

Ford Fusion 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-11
- VIN: 3FAHP0JG9AR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: As I was driving the vehicle, my ABS and all other brake service lights came on. I stopped driving the car except to take it to the dealership to be assessed and repaired. I had to have a new HCU and ABS module installed as well as brake fluid flush. After driving it off the lot I realized I had to push the brakes all the way to floor and it was still slow to stop. I took it back to the dealership and they bled the brakes again. It still doesn't brake as well as it did before incident. I had these repairs performed in Jan 2024 and recently found out that in April 2021 there was a recall for this same exact problem. I was never notified by mail as I usually am for recalls. I paid for these repairs out of pocket and believe this should have been covered under the recall from 2021. I feel this could've turned out much worse if I had continued driving the car. I would like this to be further investigated as to whether this falls under the recall.
Ford Fusion 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-01
- VIN: 3FAHP0HA5AR

While driving on a high-speed road, the engine felt like it shuddered, and the car lost engine power and would no longer accelerate. At the same time, the light shaped like a wrench came on. Our safety was therefore put at risk because we could now barely accelerate, and could easily have been rear-ended. The problem was confirmed and repaired by an independent service center. After doing the repair, the service center informed us that there was a Ford Customer Satisfaction Service Bulletin (13NO3) for this problem. We called Ford about this bulletin and were told that the Bulletin was limited to ten years or 150,000 miles, whichever came first. Even though our car is over ten years old, it only has 87,000 miles on it.

Vehicle year: 2009
I have a 2009 Ford Fusion 4 cylinder and I've owned this car for the last year. I have nothing but good things to say about this car. I bought it last October with 200xxx miles and it now has 314xxx miles. That's right, I said 314,000 miles and it's still working like a horse! The only things I had to do were replace the serpentine belt and get a wheel alignment. Other than that, I haven't had to touch anything else. Just keep the oil changed and you'll be set like an arrow. The heat still blows hot and the air is still ice cold! If and when I do get rid of this car, it'll be for a 2011 all-wheel drive, but this car has shown me no signs of even thinking about giving up. I have nothing bad to say about this car other than the front and rear bumper sometimes coming apart on the sides. I would recommend this car to anyone, young or old! It's meant for everyone. This is one of the best cars Ford has made thus far that I've seen.

Vehicle year: 2019
I've had my current Fusion for about two months now and I absolutely love it! I went for the SE with the Appearance package, which includes fog lights, 18” painted alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and an upgraded cloth/vinyl interior. The 1.5L Ecoboost engine is standard in the SE for 2019 and I find it to be more than adequate for my needs, providing plenty of power for both city and highway driving. I really enjoy having the paddle shifters, although I haven’t done much “sport mode” driving with them, I do use them regularly to force a downshift when engine revs are low. The ride is very comfortable with supportive front seats and a very quiet interior. For 2019, Ford added the co-pilot 360 package to all Fusions, which includes blind spot notifications, front collision warning, rain sensing wipers and auto high beam headlights. The telematic modem not only enables an in-vehicle hotspot but, when paired with the FordPass app, allows you to lock, unlock and remotely start the vehicle using your phone.

Vehicle year: 2020
Took your car to the dealership because the engine was sputtering and dying. Fortunately, it was covered under warranty and the dealership was very helpful. They mentioned that this was the fourth car with the same issue this week, although it is not on the recall list for 2019. Other than this, your car has been excellent. You have owned it for just over a year since buying it brand new. It has a beautiful body style, is comfortable, great on gas, and provides an easy ride.

Vehicle year: 2006
Ford must take responsibility for the faulty transmission in the 2006 Fusion. It is unacceptable that a car with less than 70k miles would require a $2400 replacement. The numerous reviews detailing this same issue make it clear that a recall or compensation is necessary. As a loyal Ford customer, I am disappointed and concerned about the reliability of the Fusion models.

We purchased a 2011 black with black leather Sport and we absolutely love it! The engine runs smoothly and has great acceleration. The transmission shifts seamlessly and the seats are incredibly supportive and comfortable. The interior is finished with high quality materials and we especially love the leather trim on the doors. We receive a lot of compliments on the car and it definitely turns heads. In fact, we parked next to a 3 Series the other day and in the reflection, the Fusion looked even better than the BMW and appeared much more expensive. Overall, we've had a fantastic experience with this car so far and we're looking forward to many more miles to come!

Vehicle year: 2017
The 2017 Ford Fusion Sport is a joy to drive and is both comfortable and agile. While I appreciate the active dampening feature, I do miss my 2015 Ford Fusion. Unfortunately, I have had some electrical issues with my vehicle, which has less than 3000 miles on it, and have had to call Ford Roadside Assistance 5 times in less than three months. I recently took it into the dealership and had to wait for several hours without a loaner, but the issue turned out to be a simple fuse causing a battery drain. However, I was disappointed to find that my car wouldn't start this morning. It's frustrating to have a car that you love but can't use. The dealer has been unable to fix the issue to my satisfaction, and I'm hesitant to recommend the brand to my friends and family.

Vehicle year: 2016
I owned a 2016 Titanium AWD 2.0, which was advertised to have a fuel efficiency of 22/31 mpg. However, my personal experience with the car showed that it only achieved 16 city and 19 combined mpg, which was disappointing. Due to this significant discrepancy, I decided to sell the car after only 6 months of ownership. It is important for car manufacturers to accurately advertise the fuel efficiency of their vehicles to avoid misleading customers.

I replaced my 2007 Passat with a 2017 Fusion Titanium, but unfortunately, the car has been experiencing some issues. Despite visiting the dealer, the problem persists and I have been left without a loaner car for the two-week period. As a result, I have decided to part ways with this car and will not be considering Ford as an option in the future.

The Ford Fusion SE I purchased recently seemed to have trouble shifting gears automatically. Despite the dealer's inability to identify the issue, my husband and I were convinced that there was a problem. We suggested that the dealer drive the car for at least 60 miles, especially on work days when the issue was more noticeable. The manager took the car home, monitored it, and discovered a transmission defect. Fortunately, the dealer replaced the transmission under warranty, despite the fact that some owners had to replace their transmissions multiple times. Additionally, a new fuel filler was installed to address another defect. Although I was used to automatic lights on my Buick, I was disappointed to find that my 2010 Ford did not have them. Overall, I am confident in the dealer's ability to address any issues and ensure that my car runs smoothly.

I have been using my car to commute 50 miles to Boston every day. While I expected some lack of power from my Olds Intrigue, the actual experience has been worse than I anticipated. The car struggles to shift out of first gear when the engine is cold, which makes for a jerky and loud ride when slowing down from 65 miles an hour to negotiate toll booths. The same performance issue arises when braking on exit ramps and having to merge, as the car chokes on acceleration. I have driven a Mazda 6, which is also a 4-cylinder 5-speed, and its pep and response far outweigh those of the Fusion. I am hesitant to take the car far from home, as it randomly fails to shift out of first gear when I need power to move forward from a stop.
