The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants. The Fusion was manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.

Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005. The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour). The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus. In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo. Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region. The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.

The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S. in February 2013. The entire 2013 Fusion line-up was awarded with the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2019, the Fusion was the seventh-best selling car in the United States.

Common Ford Fusion problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Ford Fusion cars, here are some common problems reported:

  • Failed Throttle Body: Owners of Ford Fusion models from 2010 to 2016 have reported problems with the throttle body, causing jerks while driving and engine stalling. Repairing or replacing the throttle body can cost around $1,000 for parts and labor.
  • Brake Issues: Fusion models from 2006 to 2010 faced brake problems, requiring extra pressure to stop the car. Some drivers experienced brake failure mid-drive, leading to extended stopping distances. This issue was linked to faults in the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit, necessitating a recall by Ford.
  • Engine Oil Leaks: The first vehicles of the second generation of Ford Fusions encountered engine oil leak problems, which posed safety risks due to the potential for fires. Ford issued recalls to address this issue.
  • Transmission Problems: Owners reported issues with the automatic transmission of Ford Fusion cars, including harsh or delayed shifting, revving high without shifting, and delayed shifts. Repairs for these transmission problems varied from software upgrades to complete transmission rebuilds.
  • Squeaks, Creaks, and Leaks: As the mileage increases, owners tend to experience squeaking noises while driving, creaking over bumps, and transmission oil leaks. These issues can arise around 100,000 miles and may require repairs costing between $100-$250.
  • Steering Issues: Steering problems, including power steering malfunctions and steering inefficiency, have been reported by owners. Power steering failures can lead to steering difficulties and safety concerns, with repairs costing an average of around $1,600.
  • Swollen Lug Nuts: Some owners reported problems with swollen lug nuts on Ford Fusion cars, which can make it challenging to remove the lug nuts. This issue is a result of Ford's design process and can be inconvenient for owners.

These common problems reported by Ford Fusion owners highlight various mechanical and safety issues that have affected the driving experience and reliability of these vehicles.

Ford Fusion

What years did Ford Fusion have problems?

Ah, the much-maligned 2009 Ford Fusion. Unfortunately, it joins the “Ford Fusion years to avoid” category alongside its 2006-2007 siblings when it comes to reliability. In fact, it holds the dubious honor of having the worst reliability score of all Fusion models.

Is A Ford Fusion a reliable Car?

Overall, the Ford Fusion is a reliable ride that is fun to drive and own. If you're hunting for a reliable choice from this discontinued vehicle, there are many choices available to make the most of your investment. Whether you have a family to cart around or need a commuter vehicle, the Fusion is worth it.

Does a Ford Fusion have any issues?

We talked earlier about first-year problems, and the refreshed 2010 Fusion is infamous for steering troubles. These are well-known issues. So, 2010 is definitely one of the Ford Fusion years to avoid. Steering problems continued into 2011 and 2012 but to a lesser extent.

What are the cons of a Ford Fusion?

The base engine in the Ford Fusion is solid, but it can be underwhelming. It offers 175 horsepower, but the Fusion struggles to accelerate like competitors. You won't notice it on a commute, but it will become apparent if you want to speed up to pass someone on the highway.

Ford Fusion 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-11
  • VIN: 3FAHP0JG9AR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: As I was driving the vehicle, my ABS and all other brake service lights came on. I stopped driving the car except to take it to the dealership to be assessed and repaired. I had to have a new HCU and ABS module installed as well as brake fluid flush. After driving it off the lot I realized I had to push the brakes all the way to floor and it was still slow to stop. I took it back to the dealership and they bled the brakes again. It still doesn't brake as well as it did before incident. I had these repairs performed in Jan 2024 and recently found out that in April 2021 there was a recall for this same exact problem. I was never notified by mail as I usually am for recalls. I paid for these repairs out of pocket and believe this should have been covered under the recall from 2021. I feel this could've turned out much worse if I had continued driving the car. I would like this to be further investigated as to whether this falls under the recall.
Ford Fusion 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-01
  • VIN: 3FAHP0HA5AR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The throttle body failed. It is not available for inspection because it was replaced. While driving on a high-speed road, the engine felt like it shuddered, and the car lost engine power and would no longer accelerate. At the same time, the light shaped like a wrench came on. Our safety was therefore put at risk because we could now barely accelerate, and could easily have been rear-ended. The problem was confirmed and repaired by an independent service center. After doing the repair, the service center informed us that there was a Ford Customer Satisfaction Service Bulletin (13NO3) for this problem. We called Ford about this bulletin and were told that the Bulletin was limited to ten years or 150,000 miles, whichever came first. Even though our car is over ten years old, it only has 87,000 miles on it.

Latest negative Ford Fusion car reviews

  1. Adonis Kovacek 2025-02-19

    Vehicle year: 2008

I fell in love with this car when it was released in 2006! I even traded in my 2007 Ford Focus for a 2008 Fusion. The first three years of owning the car were fantastic, but unfortunately, by the fourth year, some issues started to arise. The leather began to rip and I noticed some harsh shifting. After some investigation, I discovered that there was a problem with the valve body inside the transmission. Additionally, my AC stopped working, and I had to replace the air temperature sensor, evaporator core, and heater core. Living in Florida, AC is a must-have, and the total cost of repairs was $1600.00. I am now in the market for a different car, but it won't be a Ford. This is why some people jokingly refer to Ford as 'Fix Or Repair Daily'!

  2. Keyon Wiegand 2025-02-19

    Vehicle year: 2010

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been experiencing with your car. It sounds like you've had a really tough time with it. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

  3. Elias Nolan 2025-02-19

    Vehicle year: 2013

This car has had multiple recalls, three instances of broken door latches, and several rattling components including the center door posts, passenger doors, and rear trunk. Additionally, the dash rattled when the car was new and the defroster did not work due to a broken vent. The Ford Sync system has a low success rate of about 10%, and the lane departure feature only works about 25% of the time on well-marked roads. Despite these ongoing safety concerns, I am confident that they can be resolved with the right attention and care.

  4. Alexzander Kuphal 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2010

My son was driving this car at night and it started stalling until he pulled over. He gave me a call and I went over to switch cars. I drove it for about 10 minutes when it started stalling again. I turned it off and back on, but it continued to stall. After waiting a minute, I turned it back on and it continued to stall, so I turned it off and waited another minute. Finally, it ran fine. There had been heavy rain during the prior weeks and unfortunately, this car does not have a gas cover to stop water from entering. It's a nice car when it's running smoothly and not stalling.

  5. Hollis Hagenes 2025-02-09

I would suggest avoiding this vehicle. Although I am still making payments on my 2011 Ford Fusion, a problem with the assisted steering has developed at only 55,000 miles. Unfortunately, the repair cost is around $2,000, which is not feasible for me at the moment. There is a possibility of reimbursement if Ford recalls this issue, but it is uncertain. Currently, NHTSA is investigating over 940,000 complaints, and a class action lawsuit has been filed regarding the defective power-assisted steering failure. I switched to Ford after being a GM consumer for over 40 years, as GM did not address the rotting rusting brake problems on my brand new 2004 Silverado. I hope Ford will prioritize their customers and address this issue promptly.

I had a 2006 Fusion V6 before purchasing this one. I must say, the difference between the two vehicles is truly amazing. The 2012 Sel rides very smoothly and I absolutely adore all the bells and whistles that come with it. The only issue I have with the car is that it can be quite difficult to see what's behind you when reversing due to limited visibility. However, this is a minor inconvenience. It's worth noting that some other owners have reported certain distinctive problems online, such as a noisy blower and the check engine light coming on due to dirt getting into the opening since there is no gas cap. Fortunately, both issues are simple fixes. On the plus side, the gas mileage is excellent!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Ford Fusion S (2.5) in ruby red Metallic paint. I was so excited to find out that the premium red is available on the S model, even though it's not always shown on new car search engines. I decided to go for the S model and saved a lot compared to the SE, even though I miss some of the SE bells and whistles like power front seat and rear view camera. But you know what? The rocker panels are black vinyl and they actually look great with the red! I recently took a 2000 mile trip and kept careful records of the mileage. I'm happy to report that I got 35 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city with the 2.5 liter base engine. It had plenty of power driving over the mountains of West Virginia and the ride was incredibly smooth. Thanks for listening!

I average 27 both city/highway and it's okay to drive, but the temperature sensor is a bit screwy and throws the engine light.

We recently tested and ranked a variety of midsized sedans to replace my wife's 2013 Subaru Impreza. After much consideration, we decided on the 2016 Fusion 2.0 liter AWD. While it wasn't my first choice (I was initially drawn to the Mazda 6 GT for its MPG, handling, and looks), we ultimately agreed that AWD was a must-have feature after experiencing a sudden snowstorm in Montana. We test drove the 2.0 liter with AWD and were pleasantly surprised to find that it matched the Mazda in terms of handling and looks. Although we recognized that we would take a hit in MPG, the additional cost for gas is only about $25 per month, which is a small price to pay for the power of the 2.0 liter and the safety of AWD. We were able to get a great deal on the car, paying about $8,000 below the MSRP. We've driven the car about 1000 miles so far and absolutely love it. The intelligent AWD system performs on par or better than anything we test drove, even outperforming the Subaru's we've owned in the past. The 2.0 liter's performance and smoothness matched the V-6s we tested in the Camry and Accord and far outperformed the 2.5 4cyl in the Mazda 6. As someone who is 6'4We live in Western Montana and enjoy taking advantage of the many winding roads just minutes away. We love seeking out the curves whenever we can. In the past, I have owned a Mazda Miata and the Mazda Speed 3. While the handling of this car is nearly comparable, the overall ride is significantly better. We have had no mechanical issues at all with this car and have been able to achieve 30 mpg on the highway at 80 mph. This winter, we put the all-wheel drive to good use, especially on roads leading to ski areas. Although I'm a believer in winter tires, we stuck with the all-seasons that came with the car and never had an issue. Having owned several Subarus and all-wheel drive SUVs, I can confidently say that this AWD system is just as good, if not better, than any of them. It excels in corners on icy roads. We have had the Fusion for a year now, with 10,000 miles on it, and we still love the car. The gas mileage has increased somewhat with break-in and better discipline with the gas pedal by easing up on the desire to feel the power of the turbo. We just received a foot of snow on top of icy roads, and the car is handling it easily, reinforcing our decision to go with all-wheel drive. The heating system is fantastic, and even in sub-zero temperatures, it will heat the interior in just 5 minutes. We have 2 years left on the lease and are pretty certain that we will buy it after the lease expires. The new Fusion Sport with AWD and 345 HP may change our (my) mind, as it takes an already great car to a whole different level.

My colleagues at work affectionately call me 'Ms. Fantastic'. When I pulled up in my new 2019 Ford Fusion Sedan, I was showered with compliments. The car looks as classy as its owner and has a futuristic feel to it. It handles well on the road and provides a smooth ride. I particularly love the phone feature, which allows me to speak out loud to my 'personal secretary' with just a touch of a button on my steering wheel. The car's lights automatically adjust from high to low beam when driving at night, preventing oncoming cars from being blinded by my high beam. This is a neat feature that I no longer have to adjust manually. Additionally, the warning alarm with flashing lights on the dashboard near the windshield turned on when I accidentally got too close to a car in front of me. This is another neat feature that I appreciate. I was able to fill up the car from empty to full for only $25.00, which is amazing! Although I haven't had much time to explore all the car's features, I miss having a CD player. However, I was advised to download Spotify or Pandora radio on my phone, which can be synced to my car. I may even be able to download YouTube. There is still much to be discovered!
