Ford Fusion problems
The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants. The Fusion was manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.
Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005. The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour). The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus. In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo. Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region. The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.
The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S. in February 2013. The entire 2013 Fusion line-up was awarded with the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2019, the Fusion was the seventh-best selling car in the United States.

Common Ford Fusion problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Ford Fusion cars, here are some common problems reported:
- Failed Throttle Body: Owners of Ford Fusion models from 2010 to 2016 have reported problems with the throttle body, causing jerks while driving and engine stalling. Repairing or replacing the throttle body can cost around $1,000 for parts and labor.
- Brake Issues: Fusion models from 2006 to 2010 faced brake problems, requiring extra pressure to stop the car. Some drivers experienced brake failure mid-drive, leading to extended stopping distances. This issue was linked to faults in the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit, necessitating a recall by Ford.
- Engine Oil Leaks: The first vehicles of the second generation of Ford Fusions encountered engine oil leak problems, which posed safety risks due to the potential for fires. Ford issued recalls to address this issue.
- Transmission Problems: Owners reported issues with the automatic transmission of Ford Fusion cars, including harsh or delayed shifting, revving high without shifting, and delayed shifts. Repairs for these transmission problems varied from software upgrades to complete transmission rebuilds.
- Squeaks, Creaks, and Leaks: As the mileage increases, owners tend to experience squeaking noises while driving, creaking over bumps, and transmission oil leaks. These issues can arise around 100,000 miles and may require repairs costing between $100-$250.
- Steering Issues: Steering problems, including power steering malfunctions and steering inefficiency, have been reported by owners. Power steering failures can lead to steering difficulties and safety concerns, with repairs costing an average of around $1,600.
- Swollen Lug Nuts: Some owners reported problems with swollen lug nuts on Ford Fusion cars, which can make it challenging to remove the lug nuts. This issue is a result of Ford's design process and can be inconvenient for owners.
These common problems reported by Ford Fusion owners highlight various mechanical and safety issues that have affected the driving experience and reliability of these vehicles.
What years did Ford Fusion have problems?
Ah, the much-maligned 2009 Ford Fusion. Unfortunately, it joins the “Ford Fusion years to avoid” category alongside its 2006-2007 siblings when it comes to reliability. In fact, it holds the dubious honor of having the worst reliability score of all Fusion models.
Is A Ford Fusion a reliable Car?
Overall, the Ford Fusion is a reliable ride that is fun to drive and own. If you're hunting for a reliable choice from this discontinued vehicle, there are many choices available to make the most of your investment. Whether you have a family to cart around or need a commuter vehicle, the Fusion is worth it.
Does a Ford Fusion have any issues?
We talked earlier about first-year problems, and the refreshed 2010 Fusion is infamous for steering troubles. These are well-known issues. So, 2010 is definitely one of the Ford Fusion years to avoid. Steering problems continued into 2011 and 2012 but to a lesser extent.
What are the cons of a Ford Fusion?
The base engine in the Ford Fusion is solid, but it can be underwhelming. It offers 175 horsepower, but the Fusion struggles to accelerate like competitors. You won't notice it on a commute, but it will become apparent if you want to speed up to pass someone on the highway.

Ford Fusion 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-11
- VIN: 3FAHP0JG9AR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: As I was driving the vehicle, my ABS and all other brake service lights came on. I stopped driving the car except to take it to the dealership to be assessed and repaired. I had to have a new HCU and ABS module installed as well as brake fluid flush. After driving it off the lot I realized I had to push the brakes all the way to floor and it was still slow to stop. I took it back to the dealership and they bled the brakes again. It still doesn't brake as well as it did before incident. I had these repairs performed in Jan 2024 and recently found out that in April 2021 there was a recall for this same exact problem. I was never notified by mail as I usually am for recalls. I paid for these repairs out of pocket and believe this should have been covered under the recall from 2021. I feel this could've turned out much worse if I had continued driving the car. I would like this to be further investigated as to whether this falls under the recall.
Ford Fusion 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-01
- VIN: 3FAHP0HA5AR

While driving on a high-speed road, the engine felt like it shuddered, and the car lost engine power and would no longer accelerate. At the same time, the light shaped like a wrench came on. Our safety was therefore put at risk because we could now barely accelerate, and could easily have been rear-ended. The problem was confirmed and repaired by an independent service center. After doing the repair, the service center informed us that there was a Ford Customer Satisfaction Service Bulletin (13NO3) for this problem. We called Ford about this bulletin and were told that the Bulletin was limited to ten years or 150,000 miles, whichever came first. Even though our car is over ten years old, it only has 87,000 miles on it.

Vehicle year: 2016
I always do my research before making a purchase. I spend more time on the internet reading reviews and visiting car sites than I do at dealerships. After test driving the Audi A4, Mazda6, Hyundai Sonata, and the Ford Fusion, I narrowed my search down and the Fusion came out on top. I'm really happy with my decision so far (it's been a month). There are so many things I love about the car, such as the unbelievably quiet and smooth ride, the comfortable seats, and the awesome exterior design with white platinum paint. The car has great leg/head room for a 6'3

Comfortable, powerful (1.5 L Ecoboost), and beautiful. The intuitive and responsive technology is impressive, and the great attention to detail is evident from the blind spot mirrors to the storage cubbies and cup holders. I would definitely recommend this car!

Vehicle year: 2006
I bought my 2006 Ford Fusion five years ago with 60,000 miles on the clock. It has taken me to many places in Michigan without any major issues. I have only had to replace the tires, brakes, window regulator, and do regular oil changes. Although the check engine light comes on, I have never had any problems with the car. The shifting can be a bit jumpy when taking off fast without coming to a complete stop, especially when it's cold outside. I have noticed that the RPMs go up to about 4 or 5 before shifting to 2nd gear. I have a slow oil leak, but using Pennzoil high mileage oil has helped keep it under control. I changed the transmission fluid, but it still runs the same. The car handles well in the snow, even with cheap tires, although the door handles are a bit flimsy. With 135,000 miles on the clock, it still takes me to different places in Michigan without needing much maintenance besides oil changes, tires, and brakes. Overall, it's a great car that has served me well.

Vehicle year: 2020
I've been driving a Ford Edge for about 5 years now and realized that it was time to switch to something more gas efficient. I don't usually rely on reviews because every car is different. My 2008 Ford Edge got me 222,000 miles and never had a mechanical issue, except for the sunroof malfunctioning. I decided to stick with Ford and got a Fusion because, being 6 foot 2, I needed headroom in the driver's side. The test drive was smooth, and the safety features are top of the line. I haven't needed to get gas in the past week and a half, whereas with the Edge, I would be a couple of days overdue. If anything does happen, I'll update this review, but so far, I'm loving my 2019 Ford Fusion SE. I wish the dealership had the Titanium trim because I do like leather seats, which are much easier to clean in case of a spill, but otherwise, everything is good. I've received many compliments on it so far, and I plan to keep this vehicle for the next 5-8 years. Great job, Ford!

Vehicle year: 2015
I recently upgraded from a 2012 Ford Focus SE to a 2015 Ford Fusion SE with a 1.5L Ecoboost engine. What a difference it has made! The acceleration and engine performance are significantly better than the Focus. The transmission shifts smoothly, unlike the shake and shudder of the Focus. With only 2,300 miles on the Fusion, I can confidently say that I have never owned a better vehicle, and I've owned Ford, Honda, Chrysler, and Chevrolet. Even as an aggressive driver, I'm averaging 26mpg in city driving. The interior is spacious, quiet, and welcoming. I have plenty of room in the driver's seat, even with a rear-facing car seat behind me. I highly recommend this car! Well done, Ford!

I really wanted to love this car. Although I liked everything about it when I bought it new in June 09, I experienced some issues with the transmission. At 6000 miles, while taking my son to tour a college, the transmission slipped. I took it to the dealer and they reprogrammed the transmission, which seemed fine for a while but started slipping again. At 19000 miles, the dealership found a leak from the half shaft and burned out clutches. At 25500 miles, the transmission had to be rebuilt when it went out of gear while on vacation and would not engage. Although it was frustrating, the dealership was able to fix the issue. It's starting to flair after rebuild 7.15.11, but overall, I still think it's a good car. However, I would caution potential buyers to do their research before purchasing a Ford.

I recently purchased a 2014 Ford Fusion with 33,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the transmission shortly after buying it. Despite taking it to a Ford dealer, the problem persisted for two months, even after they replaced several parts and had engineering involved. Eventually, they replaced the transmission, but the issue still exists. The warranty on these cars is not very reliable. Dealing with the delays and inconvenience was frustrating, and no one at Ford took responsibility for the situation. I would advise against purchasing a Ford. Even the regional service representative was unable to provide any solutions or information to speed up the process.

Vehicle year: 2016
I recently purchased a 2016 Fusion with the sports package EcoBoost AWD and had high expectations for it. I believed that with proper maintenance and service at the Ford dealership, I would have a reliable car for years to come. I made sure to change the oil every 5000 miles, use synthetic oil, replace filters when recommended, and do anything else the car needed. However, at only 60,831 miles, Ford informed me that the engine is shot. Despite never being mistreated, with no dings or scratches, the drivetrain is only good for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Unfortunately, Ford quoted me $7,700.00 for a new engine. It's a shame because I really liked this car, how it looked, and how it ran. Nevertheless, I have decided not to buy another Ford again. I gave it a 2-star rating because I really liked this car, but it deserves a 1-star rating for its unreliable engine.

Hey there! While I don't usually write auto reviews, I wanted to share my experience with the 2010 Fusion. First of all, it's a beautiful car - I went for the black with black leather interior and it looked great. I was really impressed with the SYNC system and loved the color combination. However, after owning the car for a year, I did experience some issues. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop quite a bit and even had to deal with the transmission failing three times. After the third time, I decided to sell it and go back to a foreign car. I wouldn't recommend this car unless you don't mind spending a lot of time at the repair shop. Hope this helps!

I bought a 2008 Ford Fusion for my daughter's 16th birthday. We have had the car for 3 years now, and unfortunately, we have had to replace the transmission three times. Despite contacting the dealer and FMC, we have not received any help. We were even told that Fusions are not meant to last long and are considered 'throw away' cars. I drove the car to work today, and although the mechanic said it was drivable, it revved at 4000rpms before shifting into 2nd gear. The interior is not in great condition, with a cracked driver's wheel and peeling door handles that have caused us to cut our hands. We had to use duct tape to cover them up to prevent anyone else from getting hurt.
