2009 Ford Fusion problems

ford logo

The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car that was manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. From the 2006 through 2020 model years, two generations of the Fusion have been produced in gasoline, gas/electric hybrid, and gas/plug-in electric hybrid variants. The Fusion was manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly plant in Sonora, Mexico, alongside the Lincoln MKZ, and formerly the Mercury Milan, both of which share its CD3 platform.

Production on the first Fusions began on August 1, 2005. The Fusion replaced the Mondeo for the Latin American markets—except in Argentina (where the current European Mondeo is available) and in the United States and Canada (where it superseded the then mid-size Taurus and the compact Contour). The Fusion is positioned between the compact Ford Focus and the full-size Ford Taurus. In the Middle East, this model is sold alongside the Mondeo. Versions sold there are available only with the 2.5-liter engine. Unlike in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, no V6 engine is available in that region. The same is true in South Korea, where only the 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year.

The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi, making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid versions began in the U.S. in October 2012 under the 2013 model. Sales in Europe and Asia as Ford Mondeo began in 2015, along with South Africa, where the Fusion name was used. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began in the U.S. in February 2013. The entire 2013 Fusion line-up was awarded with the 2013 Green Car of the Year at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2019, the Fusion was the seventh-best selling car in the United States.

Common 2009 Ford Fusion problems

The 2009 Ford Fusion has fewer complaints than other midsize cars from 2009, but there are still some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common issues is related to the brakes. Owners have reported a soft pedal feel around 90,000 miles due to an ABS module failure, which reduces brake force. This problem is often caused by a recall on the ABS valve, which can also lead to a weak brake feel. If the problem is not covered by the recall, replacing the ABS module can cost around $1,000.

Another common problem is broken interior door handles around 60,000 miles. The handle frequently breaks where it meets the latch assembly. Installing a replacement handle costs about $70, depending on local labor rates, but is a fairly easy project owners can do themselves.

Leaking sunroofs are another complaint from owners as the cars age past 65,000 miles. The seals on the sunroof wear out over time, and the best way to fix the problem is to replace the seals, or the entire sunroof assembly. Seals cost about $250, and a new sunroof is $700.

There are 8 recalls for the 2009 Ford Fusion, which is average for a car from 2008. The recalls include driver side floor mat, air bag inflators, and the ABS valve. The most serious recall is the ABS valve, as failures can reduce braking power, increasing the risk of an accident.

Despite these issues, the 2009 Ford Fusion has great reliability ratings from J.D. Power and holds up well on the used market. It has no serious mechanical problems and is known for its roomy interior and low ownership costs. The car has an average fuel economy of up to 23 miles per gallon and excellent safety ratings, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests and a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-09
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3FAHP07Z99R
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: After activation of ABS brake system, brakes became "soft" and "spongy" with permanent increased braking time. As described in safety recall 19S54, this due to to a valve in the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) being stuck open. I received a letter from Ford Motor Company regarding this safety recall in 2011 informing of the defect and assuring "we will correct this condition." The vehicle was taken to Koons Ford (1051 E Broad St., Falls Church, VA, 22044; 703-241-7250) on 7/5/21 for repair. However, the HCU was not replaced, which appears to be the only remedy to this problem. Instead DOT 3 brake fluid was replaced with DOT 4 fluid, according to Koons Ford. However, after subsequent activation of the ABS brake system, the brakes became impaired again in the same way as before. I returned the car to Koons Ford on [XXX]. A "one-time" repair was performed pursuant to "customer satisfaction program" 21N11, as Ford acknowledged in a letter to dealers dated 12/7/21 that numerous customers were returning as the action prescribed in safety recall 19S54 did not repair the defective brakes. However, the HCU was not replaced. Service Advisor Kevin Lacki told me the HCU "passed" the inspection/diagnostic despite replication of the problem. I complained to Service Manager Rob Ryans who did nothing. I emailed the General Manager of the dealership twice, and he never responded. I called the manufacturer on [XXX] (case #[XXX]), but no action was taken. The problem of "soft" brakes and extended travel time quickly resurfaced and led to a vehicle accident in early 2023. The Ford Motor Company is employing a diagnostic that results in false "passes" for HCUs that should be replaced (and/or this dealership did not correctly perform the service actions). Even after "passing" Ford's diagnostic, the HCU valve(s) become stuck open after ABS activation. The safety recall should be investigated and the recall amended to replace faulty HCUs. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Park It: 1
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Ford Ranger vehicles, 2006-2011 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles, and 2005-2011 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Ford is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles and 2005-2008 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Any vehicle not included in "Zone A", or "Zone B" is not included in the safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. Ford mailed interim letters informing owners that parts are not yet available on July 15, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S01.
2014-05-29
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.
  • Consequence: The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

I've had my vehicle for 2 months and unfortunately, I've experienced some issues. It hasn't been great on gas and there was a certain chip that wasn't updated properly on my transmission. This has caused some hesitation and loss of acceleration while driving, which can be concerning. It's important to do your research before making a purchase to ensure that you're making the right choice. There have been some safety concerns with faulty airbags and Ford's handling of recalls, which has understandably caused frustration for many customers. It's important to prioritize safety and make informed decisions.

Please be aware of the recall notices for your vehicle. Unfortunately, I received a recall notice after only 6 months of owning my vehicle. Although the part replacement is free, it is currently on back order for at least a year. I highly recommend doing your research before purchasing a vehicle. It's important to note that there have been fatalities related to this issue, and legal action may be necessary. If you are financing your vehicle, please be aware that trading it in may result in a lower offer due to the defect. As a loyal Ford customer for 20 years, I am disappointed in their handling of this situation. I hope they take responsibility and make things right. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I purchased this car with 68k miles and unfortunately, I have had to replace several parts including both tie rods, valve gasket cover, ECM, and solenoid actuator. The gas mileage has also decreased suddenly and the engine check light has repeatedly come on due to electrical issues caused by a faulty ECM. On the bright side, the ride is smooth and the tire size is great, providing good traction in wet and snowy conditions with the right brand and type. However, the 4 cylinder model seems to struggle at times. As long as you keep up with regular oil changes and brake maintenance, you should be fine for a while. Unfortunately, I have decided to trade in the car before more work is needed. Looking at the reviews from 2 years ago, it seems that this is a common issue with Fords. Despite the recalls and concerns about the airbag, I believe this car can last a while if you are willing to invest in electrical maintenance.

It would be great if there were indicators to let you know if your headlights are on or off, if cruise control is engaged, or if your sunroof is open. Additionally, the loud vibrating and resonating when the sunroof is open while driving over 55 MPH can be quite bothersome. It's also worth noting that this car only has two speed selections on the transmission, so downshifting on downgrades may not be possible without risking damage to the transmission and discomfort to your neck.

I've put 100,000 on it only replaced a water pump and it Handel's better than a few others of driven my son in law has a Honda civic and it was cheaper than his and compared to the way it drives mine is a luxury car

I see that you traded in a 2006 Honda Accord EX for a 2009 Ford Fusion SE with Sport Package. It's great to hear that you're enjoying the Fusion! It seems like it handles better than the Accord, has just as much power, and the build quality is just as good if not better than the Accord. Plus, it's a fun car to drive. And for the price, it's hard to beat the Fusion.

Originally reviewed after one month. I thought I'd give a 6-month update to let you know what I think now that the 'newness' has worn off. Currently, I have 8000 miles on the vehicle and I haven't had to take it in for warranty work. However, I do have a few rattles and one clunk that will probably be covered by warranty repairs at some point. The 'clunk/rattle' sound is the most annoying at this point and only happens when going over somewhat larger bumps/humps in the road. It seems to originate from the passenger front when I do hear it (my wife calls me a freak for rattles). Other than that, the vehicle is still fun to drive and I'm getting 27mpg with 50/50 highway/city driving. I still get excited to drive it!

I have a V6 SEL with the sport package, leather, moonroof, and tune. It's an all-around winner! Although I had some issues in the beginning, the dealer took care of them all, and it's been perfect ever since. The seats are very comfortable, and the gas mileage is right on estimates. It's a great handling and riding car with a nice stereo. Overall, I'm very happy!

I really love this car! My Fusion is Tuxedo Black and it looks amazing. It rides beautifully and Sync is just incredible. You can even plug your iPod right in for Sync, so you don't even need the six CD changer. It handles well and I feel so safe in it. I've test driven the Camry and the Accord, but this car just blows them out of the water. I've never felt this way about any car I've owned in the past.
