The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.
The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.
The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2000 Acura Tl.

- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2001-2002 Acura 3.2CL, 2000-2003 Acura 3.5RL, 2000-2001 Acura 3.2TL, Honda CR-V and Honda Odyssey, 2001-2002 Acura MDX and 2000 Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Coupe, and Civic Sedan vehicles. These vehicles may have received a replacement driver frontal air bag module as part of a vehicle repair. Due to a manufacturing issue, the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air bags in the vehicles, replacing the driver frontal air bag inflator with an inflator of a different design, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138.

Overall, this is a nice car with great value. However, it may not be the best fit for taller individuals with back problems as it can be tough to get comfortable and there isn't much room in the back, especially for adults. On the positive side, the navigation system (not standard) is easy to use and has lots of features. The steering wheel stereo controls are a nice touch and the dashboard controls are well-placed and easy to read. The heated front seats activate quickly and work well. The engine is very powerful and provides a smooth ride. Additionally, the headlights are outstanding and high beams may not even be necessary.

I've had great service from this car. Mechanically it is smooth but I have had some misgivings about the transmission. However, I'm glad to say that Acura replaced the transmission under warranty at about 50,000 miles. I love the 5 speed automatic, but it acts a little strange at times.

I recently upgraded from a 1990 Acura to the 2000 TL and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The TL has fantastic pick up and is an absolute joy to drive. My friends are amazed by the car and think I spent a lot more than I actually did.

This car is amazing! It has been driven nearly 70,000 miles, mostly on the highway and at high speeds, and it still runs like a dream. All it needs is an oil change at 3,000 miles and a tank of gas. The rear spoiler looks great, even though it was a bit pricey. The white diamond pearl paint is still beautiful and the interior is in great condition. It's an excellent value for the money and incredibly reliable. The only cars I've driven that were more fun were the BMW 540i and M5, but those are in a completely different class!

After two years with a Lexus ES 300, I decided to explore other options in the entry-level luxury market. It's like dating a girl, she's great and all, but you never know if there's someone better out there. The car is definitely fun to drive and has a sporty feel, but the overall quality is still unmatched by the ES 300. While the Acura may be faster (by a second in 0-60 times), my heart still belongs to my old ES 300. I guess I shouldn't have left the old girl.

This car has had some issues with service, but overall it has been a great vehicle with good mileage. Despite the minor problems, I am confident in its quality and performance. The seat belt light issue was resolved after a few trips to the dealer, and the front strut was fixed after only two trips. Although I need new rear brakes at 55k miles, the scheduling process has been manageable. While Acura's policy does not offer loaner cars for less than 3 hour waits, I am still confident in the car's reliability. Despite the small problems that have arisen, I am confident in the quality of this young car and believe it will continue to perform well.

My 3.2TL is 2 years and 9 months old with 63,000 miles, which is out of warranty. However, when my transmission failed, Acura replaced it for free and only charged me $800. While I have heard that some Acuras are experiencing transmission issues, I can attest that Acura took care of the problem with my car. Additionally, I had a small piece of paint flake off the front of the roof, but this was a minor issue. During the warranty period, I reported that the CD player was not playing CDs that I burned at home, but Acura suggested that it was an issue with my PC. Unfortunately, after the warranty expired, the CD player stopped working altogether and I had to pay for the repair myself. The technician informed me that the laser was malfunctioning.

Currently in the shop for a second transmission replacement. Unfortunately, the first one died at only 30,000 miles and now the second one has also failed at 63,000 miles. However, the rest of the car is in great condition. It seems that the transmission design may be flawed, as many other owners of the same model have reported similar issues.
