2003 Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio (also called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a subcompact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different 16-valve gasoline inline-four engines, with 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre, this one capable of 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in 2007 around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan (2006 to 2014) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 2019.

Overview

Models in North America got a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine with 145 hp (108 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (2002–2004), S and SX (2005), and Base and Premium (2006–2007). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new 2.3-liter 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) engine in 2004, a major styling and interior refresh in 2005 (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in 2006. Only the Aerio sedan remained for 2007, as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new 2007 SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the 2008 SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.

In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre I4 engine. All-wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In 2004, the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a 16-valve version of the 1.4-litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.

The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre variants until 2014.

Common 2003 Suzuki Aerio problems

Based on the information from the sources provided, here are some common problems reported by owners of the Suzuki Aerio 2003:

  • Fuse Problem: Another common problem involved fuse issues, particularly with the second fuse from the top to the bottom, leading to stalling of the vehicle. Replacing the fuse with a higher amp rating temporarily resolved the problem, but it was suspected to be related to a fuel pump issue.
  • Failure Light Indicator: Owners also reported an issue where the failure light indicator would turn on when the engine was running and persist even after restarting the engine. This problem was suggested to be related to a failing idle speed sensor.
  • Engine Electrical Failure: Some owners faced sudden stalling of the vehicle at high speeds, with the engine losing electrical current. After cooling down, the engine would restart, only to repeat the failure when warmed up again. The cause of this issue remained unidentified.
  • Shock Absorbers: Complaints were made about the shock absorbers of the Suzuki Aerio 2006, where despite being recently replaced, they were reported to be damaged, posing a concern due to their high cost.
  • Jerking/Hesitation: Owners reported experiencing jerking or hesitation when the car was stopped or during driving, although the vehicle's performance was generally good. The cause of this issue was not specified in the sources provided.

These problems highlight various issues faced by Suzuki Aerio owners, ranging from electrical failures to mechanical issues like shock absorber problems and jerking during operation. Each problem requires specific diagnostics and potentially repairs to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and safety.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-08-01
  • VIN: JS2RC41H635
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I OWN A 2003 AERIO SUZUKI SX 5-SPEED WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION. IT'S BEEN POPPING OUT OF 5TH GEAR AND INTO NEUTRAL. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER WHERE PURCHASED. THEY SAID THEY TEST DROVE IT AND COULD NOT "DUPLICATE CONCERN". THE VERY RUDE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME EVEN IF PROBLEM WAS FOUND THEY DO NOT HAVE EQUIPMENT TO REPAIR IT AND TO TAKE IT SOMEPLACE ELSE. SHE ALSO MADE A COMMENT ABOUT NOT NEEDING "FREE WORK",LEADING ME TO BELIEVE BECAUSE IT IS UNDER WARRANTY, THEY DID NOT WANT TO DO EXTENSIVE WORK FOR FREE!! I CALLED SUZUKI AND THEY SAID MOST DEALERS PROBABLY WOULDN'T TEST DRIVE IT MORE THAN 20 MILES AND IT IS HARD TO FIX AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM AND TO TRY ANOTHER DEALER. DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS AND HAVING GEARS POP OUT SHOULD GET MORE ATTENTION THAN AN" INTERMITTENT PROBLEM". OTHER DEALERS ARE MORE THAN 30 MILES AWAY AND HARD TO LEAVE VEHICLE THERE. I READ ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM ON LINE AND ONE OF THE PEOPLE 'S DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS PREMATURE WEAR IN THE 5TH GEAR SYNCHRO ASSEMBLY AND REPAIRED HIS VEHICLE. *JB

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-06-15
  • VIN: JS2RA41S035
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: APPROXIMATELY IN JUNE 2005 A NOISE AND VIBRATION DEVELOPED WHEN RUNNING THE A/C AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE S-BELT TENSIONER, WHICH WAS REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE, AT CRAWFORD SUZUKI ON AIRWAYS BLVD. IN EL PASO, TEXAS.ON JUNE 12, 2006, WHILE RETURNING FROM TUCSON, AZ, MY WIFE NOTICED A VIBRATION AND NOISE. I TOOK THE CAR TO CRAWFORD SUZUKI ON 6/15/2006 (SMCS345882). AFTER THE CAR WAS EXAMINED BY THE TECHNICIAN I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A MISALIGNED, FACTORY INSTALLED POWER STEERING BRACKET. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICEMAN ABLE AGUIRRE, I WOULD HAVE TO FULLY PAY FOR THE REPAIR AS THE CAR IS OVER THE WARRANTY PERIOD.ON SATURDAY 17, I SPOKE TO JAVIER, THE OWNER OF THRIFTY CAR SALES AND HE AGREED THAT SUZUKI SHOULD REPAIR AT THEIR EXPENSE WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A FACTORY DEFECT. AT CRAWFORD THEY AGREE THAT THIS IS A MATTER OF A FACTORY DEFECT AND THEREFORE THE MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT.ON FRIDAY 23, I SPOKE TO A PERSON WHO IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS ''MANNY'' THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT ALL HE COULD DO WAS TO CONTACT THE SUZUKI DISTRICT MANAGER AND HE WOULD GET BACK TO ME. HE ALSO, STATED THAT THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM WAS ADDRESSED IN A ''SERVICE BULLETIN'' THEY HAD RECEIVED ABOUT A MONTH AFTER THESE UNITS WERE PLACED ON THE MARKET AND A REPLACEMENT BRACKET WAS AVAILABLE, BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL. SOMETIME LATER, MANNY TOLD MY WIFE THAT THEIR SOLUTION IS THAT THEY WILL PROVIDE THE PARTS AND I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR LABOR. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AS I ALREADY PAID A COUPLE OF HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A PROBLEM THAT NOW WE KNOW WAS CAUSED BY THIS FACTORY DEFECT. I THINK THAT SINCE THEY KNEW OF THE DEFECT EARLY ENOUGH, THEY ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE SINCE THEY NEITHER THE SUZUKI DEALERSHIPS NOR THE FACTORY, DISCLOSED THIS DEFECT PRIOR TO THE SALE OF THE AUTOMOBILE TO THE PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS, NEITHER DID THEY MAKE AN EFFORT TO CAUSE THE REPAIR. *NM

2003 Suzuki Aerio recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2003 Suzuki Aerio.

2007-07-15
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP.
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, DUE TO IMPROPER SHAPE OF THE CLIP, THE RETAINING CLIP THAT KEEPS THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE ATTACHED TO THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER CAN CONTACT THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER HOUSING IF EXCESSIVE LATERAL FORCE IS APPLIED WHEN SHIFTING TO FIRST GEAR.
  • Consequence: REPEATED SHIFTING IN THIS MANNER CAN EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE RETAINING CLIP TO BREAK. IF THE RETAINING CLIP BREAKS, THE SHIFT CABLE CAN BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE SHIFT LEVER, RESULTING IN LOSS OF THE ABILITY TO CHANGE TRANSMISSION GEARS.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE RETAINING CLIP WITH A CLIP THAT HAS A DIFFERENT SHAPE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 13, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AMERICAN SUZUKI AT 1-800-934-0934.
2003-06-16
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORP.
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER (111 MY 2002 ESTEEM, 777 MY 2002 AERIO, 2,368 MY 2003 AERIO) AND SPORT UTILITY (324 MY 2002 GRAND VITARA, 274 MY 2003 GRAND VITARA, 684 MY 2002 GRAND VITARA XL-7, AND 781 MY 2003 GRAND VITARA XL-7) VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 212, 'WINDSHIELD MOUNTING." THE WINDSHIELD MAY NOT BE PROPERLY SECURED TO THE VEHICLE BODY DUE TO INSUFFICIENT ADHESION BETWEEN THE PAINT APPLIED DURING THE SECOND-STAGE PAINTING PROCESS AND THE PAINT APPLIED DURING FINAL-STAGE PAINTING.
  • Consequence: IF THE WINDSHIELD IS NOT PROPERLY SECURED, IT MAY SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE DURING A CRASH WHICH COULD RESULT IN THE EJECTION OF UNBELTED OCCUPANTS, INCREASING THE RISK OF SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THESE VEHICLES. VEHICLES THAT ARE FOUND TO HAVE INSUFFICIENT PAINT ADHESION WILL EITHER HAVE THE PROBLEM REMEDIED BY REPAINTING, OR WILL BE REPLACED, OR REPURCHASED AND DESTROYED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JULY 8, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT SUZUKI AT 1-800-934-0934.

Negative 2003 Suzuki Aerio car reviews

  1. Lonzo Cruickshank 2024-08-25

I traded in my 03 SX 5 speed after 9500 miles due to several issues such as front brakes clunking, front door panels buzzing constantly, a loud dash rattle occurring twice, loose fog lights and hood, and an annoying driveline bucking problem combined with a loss of power. Additionally, the fuel economy on the highway was disappointing (29.5) and the engine was too loud and not smooth. Wind noise was also noticeable starting at 60mph. Despite these issues, it is worth noting that the Aerio is extremely roomy and comfortable.

  2. Lavern Crona 2024-07-09

The car is fun to drive and has been reliable. I really like the standard features. Although I've put an additional 70,000 miles on it without any mechanical problems, the body integrity is poor. The bumper is too low and scrapes on too many things, and it's ready to fall off. Also, the 6 CD player no longer works, and some dash lights don't work properly. The gas mileage is so-so. Overall, it has worked well for me, but if I were in the market for a new car, I would probably look at a Toyota first.

Positive 2003 Suzuki Aerio car reviews

  1. Stanley Johnston 2024-10-23

I really enjoyed my Suzuki! As a previous Suzuki owner, I have always been impressed with their line-up, dating back to the SJ410 (Samurai) days. The only downside I see to the Aerio is the lack of aftermarket performance enhancements, such as an exhaust kit. However, K&N makes a Typhoon kit for the car that makes a noticeable difference in both performance and fuel economy. As a tall man (6'3

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. Overall, it's been a good ride. The gas mileage is great, which is always a plus. However, I did have to replace both bumpers as they were a bit too low to the ground. Additionally, the body work could have been better. I've had some issues with the radio and CD player, as they sometimes cut out or won't stay on the station. I've also had to replace four other parts, but I make sure to change all my oils and fluids on a regular basis. Lastly, I had some trouble finding parts for the front wheel bearings. Thanks for listening!

When I first purchased the car, I had an issue with the windshield wipers going off on a sunny day, even though I didn't turn them on. I also had trouble with the keyless lock and interior dome light. However, I finally found the problem in the rear wiper electrical hookup and fixed it. Since then, I haven't had any issues. With 52,000 miles on the clock, I recently put new brakes on and got new tires about a year ago. This car is great for small people, especially women, as it's easy to handle and drive. It also has a great capacity for hauling when the rear seats are down, providing extra cargo space. Additionally, it has great mileage, allowing me to go 400 miles to New York state and still have 1/4 tank of gas left. My husband is 6 ft and I am 5 ft, and the car fits us both perfectly.

It sounds like you have a great car! Your 2002 Suzuki AERIO GS has served you well with only minimal maintenance required. It's impressive that you've only needed to change the oil and perform general maintenance, even after driving 35,000 miles. Keep up the good work!
