2016 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.
The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.
The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.
A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.
The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

- Summary: NHTSA Recall # 23V-487 Manufacturer Recall # 6023G issued July 14, 2023 After repeated phone calls to the Manufacturer and the Mazda Dealership, the recall has not been fixed. I have been told that the parts are not available. As of this date, 16 months after the recall, Mazda has not fixed the problem. I have been told by the Manufacturer and the Mazda Dealership, that parts are not available. The manufacturer told me that they have no date when parts will be available. I have asked to speak with a Manager at the Manufacturer and was told that there is no one else to talk to except Customer Service. I asked for a contact at the Corporate level that I could send an email to, and was told that there was no email address available. They have suggested that I get it fixed at my own cost and submit a claim that may or may not be reimbursed. I consider the distorted rear view camera picture to be a safety hazard when backing up. I believe that 16 months should be plenty of time to fix this problem and that Mazda just does not want to fix a manufacturing problem on a 8 year old car.

- Summary: The recall related to the rear backup camera has not been addressed and it is more than a year later. I just got off the phone with a Mazda representative and they still do not have a solution nor know when one might be available. I would like to sell my car but with a defective backup camera and view screen, I will have trouble doing so and/or won't get as much for the vehicle as I should. I have a 5 year old and I don't feel safe driving this vehicle, as the rearview camera turns off suddenly at times when I am reversing the vehicle. I would like to submit a compliant for negligence on Mazda's part and urge you to do something to make them fix this defect. Thanks.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-11-01
- VIN: 3MZBM1K73GM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The rear parking assist camera has only worked intermittently since I purchased the car. There is really no pattern to when or why the camera chooses to work or not work, but It seems most affected by opening and closing the rear hatch: if it's working and i open the hatch, it stops working; if it's not working, opening/closing it will often cause it to work again. This is a problem because parking/backing up becomes a challenge when it's not working. This puts my safety at risk because it increases the chances of me having a fender bender when in reverse.

- Summary: The Mazda Connect touch screen in the center display does not accept touch commands properly or will often operate by itself (ghost touch). When it does this, even though I will have navigation on, it will interrupt the service to jump screens, causing me to lose guidance and force me to pull-over to try to deal with the issue. I have had to swerve in my lane trying to correct the issue until I have the opportunity to pull-over, and it has been dangerous to me and the folks on the road with me when this happens.

- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Manufacturer Recall No 6023G NHTSA Recall No. 23V-487 Rear View Camera has NOT been repaired. How long more do I have to wait for the repairs to start? It has been over 6 months since the recall notice went out but I have had the issue for years now. Please step in and make Mazda make good on their products. I have called several dealerships but they all tell me that only Mazda headquarters knows when the repairs kits will become available. So, when is that? Do we wait until more accidents happen so the lawsuits increase over this matter? Last time I checked they are still putting out thousands of cars on the road...does that mean they are too busy to take care of these issues since, after all, they have already pocketed our monies and now we are pushed to the side as if we don't matter? I await great news.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-01
- VIN: 3MZBM1K79GM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Infotainment system / center console doesn't work properly. Buttons would be pushed at random, changing stations and flipping thru menus. It deteriorated to the point where it would constantly reset itself, flashing a very bright (and not dimmable) Mazda logo over and over. Mazda insisted on charging for repairs so I have instead simply removed the center console instead. otherwise the bright flashing light at night was distracting to the point of dangerous.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
- VIN: JM1BM1J73G1
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Recently noticed the odor of unburned gasoline, both inside and outside the vehicle. When driving, the ventilation system would flush this away in a few moments, but this phenomenon is new within the past few weeks. Our mechanic (not the dealer) traced the issue to the fuel tank, where the port for the fuel pump and sensors is located on top. This area is accessible by removing the rear seat cushion and a cover plate. He showed me how the fuel pump and sensor module has rusted to the thread of the port, preventing removal of the assembly, and that the port flange itself has rusted and has pin-holes, allowing vapor to escape. He was able to put slight positive air pressure to the tank as a test, and was able to cause liquid fuel to escape from the holes. The tank was about 3/4 full at the time. This seems like a serious safety issue. The port and matching threaded parts (fuel pump / sensor module) that inserts there should be corrosion-proof. I can provide a photo of the affected area if needed; I would get the image file from my mechanic.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-02
- VIN: 3MZBM1V76GM

- Summary: ac/heat knob will not go into max air due to a cable slipping off the mechanism behind the dash when it does this the heat will not work and it is hard to defrost your windows if they get fogged up while driving making it difficult to see
Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
- VIN: 3MZBM1J71GM
- Components: Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness
- Summary: When cleaning and adjusting the seat to move it to forward-facing, we discovered that two of the child harness straps (the crotch strap and one of the shoulder straps) had significant grooves cut into them, presumably by the plastic edges of the base. Given that this damage was not visible before moving the cover and adjusting the seat, and given that Graco advertises this seat as rear-facing from 4 to 50 pounds and forward-facing up to 65 pounds, a consumer wouldn't see or have any reason to expect this level of damage after about 3.5 years of use. I have to assume that this sort of severe wear compromises the strength of the straps and thus the safety of the seat if there were an accident (thank goodness we didn't have one). I have the seat still, and I contacted the manufacturer with pictures of the damage, and they did not seem to think it was out of the ordinary or alarming at all, just told me that they could send me a rebate for a discount on a new seat if I wanted since this one was out of warranty. I cannot believe that this is an acceptable and safe amount of normal wear. I can attest that we followed manufacturer instructions for care and install and did not use any cleaning products on the seat, submerge the seat, leave it outside, or do anything else that I can think of that would have constituted inappropriate care of the seat.

As a mechanic with over 35 years of experience, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the Mazda 3. It rides better than my 06 Lincoln LS sport touring sedan, which is quite impressive for a compact car. The size of the Mazda is perfect for my wife and me, but it may be a bit small for a family. The handling, brakes, lighting, and entertainment are all top-notch, and the crash rating is excellent with A+ reinforcements in the body structure. Another plus is that I can easily see everything under the hood, which is not the case with my LS. The 4cyl engine is easy to work on, with plenty of room to access the A/C, water pump, alternator, etc. Plus, it has a timing chain, so I don't have to remove the front cover to do the belt and water pump. The car gets good highway mileage, with 35 mpg at 75mph and 40.1 below 65mph. As for road noise, my wife and I have no issues talking to each other at 75-80 mph. The Mazda 3 is well-built, and cornering is a breeze. While it's not a sports car, the handling is better than I expected for a compact car. The fact that it's produced in Mexico doesn't bother me, as Mazda has very strict high standards for production. Most of the parts I install on American cars are either Mexico or China-made, and some American cars are made in Mexico as well. Overall, I highly recommend the Mazda 3 for anyone looking for a reliable and well-built compact car.

I previously owned a Mazda 3 Sedan before purchasing the 3i Sport and, believe it or not, I was rear-ended in both vehicles. The first Mazda was hit dead center by an old Ford Bronco. Although the Bronco lost its grill and the radiator was spewing fluid, I only had a 1 inch gash in my bumper and the stabilizer bar had to be replaced. Thankfully, I wasn't injured at all. The second accident was in 2016 with my new 2016 3i Sport. A Hyundai Elantra rear-ended me and then a F-250 pickup truck rear-ended the Elantra which shoved the Elantra into me again. Unfortunately, I did have neck injuries from that one. However, the bumper was replaced and nothing else. I must say, the Mazda 3 is an incredibly sturdy vehicle. Living in Brevard County, Florida, people love to stop in your backseat out here. I hope that no one else rear-ends me again, but if they do, I am glad I have a vehicle that can endure it.

The 2016 Mazda 3 iGrand Touring model has everything you could want from this style of vehicle. It's safe, reliable, and economical, with some great features including navigation and a Bluetooth system that has better sound quality than some luxury cars. Plus, it's fun to drive, all at a good price. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better option.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 4 door hatch 2.0 iTouring that I leased in January. While I can't comment on reliability just yet, I can tell you that I've been thoroughly impressed with this car so far. I opted for the 6 speed manual and it includes all of the options except for eloop, lane departure warning, and Adaptive CC. Coming from a Hyundai Veloster, this was a MAJOR upgrade in just about every way imaginable. The build quality is the most striking difference between the two vehicles. In the 1500 miles that I've driven so far, I've averaged 34.4 MPG combined. For those who are struggling to meet the EPA's estimates, I suggest using the cruise control whenever you're on the highway. Thanks for reading!

I have been leasing this vehicle since May of 2016 and overall, I am very happy with it. However, I have noticed that the acceleration could be improved. When I drove the CX-3, which has less horsepower and torque, I felt that it had better acceleration than my Mazda3. Although I am satisfied with my car, I wonder why this is the case. Overall, I am pleased with my Mazda3.

Don't get me wrong, the Mazda 3 is a great car. However, after 73000+ miles, I must sadly say that I would not buy any other Mazda in the future. The maintenance costs were astronomical, and the vehicle was serviced only by the manufacturer's dealer (the one in the SFV that sells high volume vehicles - G----N). I have never had a vehicle that required so much money to drive daily. I think I will stick with Toyota. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I wanted to share my experience with my Mazda. While I did have some issues with the emission control system malfunctioning, the Mazda dealer eventually repaired the problem under warranty so I could have the car smog checked for the registration renewal. The touch screen on the dash was also recalled and replaced by Mazda, which was great. However, I did find that the ride has gotten worse and I feel every bump. Additionally, Mazda charges a lot to update the maps in the built-in Navigation, which I declined as I can use my phone instead. Other manufacturers allow owners to download the software onto a flash drive, plug it in, and update. While it's a good car for going from point A to point B in town, it isn't the best for long trips on the freeway because of the noise from wind and road, along with the seats not being supportive enough for a long trip. Despite these issues, I have found that it is good for a second car to go to the grocery store as it always starts. I have had some frustrations dealing with Mazda dealers and Mazda Customer Care, but I have found that the maintenance can be done at the tire store. Overall, while I wouldn't buy another Mazda, I do appreciate that it has been reliable for me. Thank you again for reading my review!Mexican-made Mazdas use different parts than those made in Japan. Due to a broken caliper and defective emergency brake, the passenger side rear brake pad wore down faster (to 10%) than the other brake pads, as it was stuck on the rotor. Therefore, the rear brakes had to be replaced.

The 2016 Mazda3 is a great car, but it is important to note that it requires frequent and expensive brake repairs. With only 63,000 miles on the car, I have had to replace the brakes at least 4 times and have experienced metal on metal depletion. It is important to consider the cost of brake repairs before purchasing this car.

The car is absolutely stunning and drives like a dream. While I did experience some issues with the Bluetooth, the dealership was very accommodating and even came to my home to install a working Bluetooth. However, over time, I continued to experience intermittent problems with the interface between my iPhone and the Mazda Bluetooth. I was hopeful that these issues would be resolved during my recent service appointment, but unfortunately, the Bluetooth still wasn't recognized. Despite this setback, the Mazda employee went above and beyond to try and resolve the issue, even after his working hours. I later contacted the Mazda Bluetooth company, who suggested restoring the original factory settings, but unfortunately, this didn't work either. It's worth noting that there are many other problems with the interface between Mazda and iPhones, such as issues with Contacts and Pandora. After some research, I discovered that Mazda has been working to address these issues, but it seems that there is still work to be done. Overall, I believe that Mazda should have been more transparent about these issues upfront, but I appreciate their efforts to resolve them. Otherwise, it can be frustrating and misleading for customers to expect a smooth Bluetooth experience. I have spent countless hours trying to resolve these issues, but unfortunately, the Mazda dealership has not been very responsive lately. Mazda corporate has a long wait time to speak to someone, which can be inconvenient. However, I understand that the new Mazda 3's coming next year will have Apple Play installed, and they are slowly bringing those into older cars. Although I have not heard anything about when they will get to my 2016 car, I am hopeful that enough complaints have prompted them to upgrade their Bluetooth system. Despite the poor communication from their corporate offices, I still enjoy the car and will be grateful when they finally upgrade their Bluetooth connection with my iPhone.

This is my third and most likely last Mazda purchase. I previously owned a new 2008 Mazda 3 and loved it! However, my pre-owned 2009 cx9 required new tires, brakes, and several other minor repairs shortly after purchasing it from a dealer. As a result, I decided to trade it in for a 2016 Mazda 3 with better gas mileage. Unfortunately, it had some issues within the first month, including a strange smell and a malfunctioning blind spot monitor. I also had to bring it in for service twice due to noisy rear brakes and a warped rotor that was present when I bought it. The most recent issue has been ongoing for two weeks, with the front end struts, strut mounts, and power steering column all requiring replacement. While the dealership has been helpful in fixing these problems and providing me with a loaner car, I am disappointed that these issues have arisen in such a short period of time. As a result, I have decided to end my love affair with Mazda.
