Subaru Outback 2019 problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

History

The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.

Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.

The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.

When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

Common Subaru Outback 2019 problems

The 2019 Subaru Outback has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include a weak windshield, unintended acceleration, and overall higher rates of problems compared to other model years.

One of the most complained about areas is for electrical problems. Drivers have reported issues with the battery dying prematurely, the hatchback not opening as needed, and problems with the audio system.

The windshield has also been a problem for 2019 Subaru Outback owners. Some drivers have reported that the windshield cracks without warning, with some experiencing this issue twice within a short period. Replacing the windshield can cost more than $800, adding to the overall cost of ownership.

Another issue reported by drivers is a wobble in the steering wheel, making it difficult to steer. This has been described as intense and contributing to the overall stress of driving the 2019 Subaru Outback.

The most expensive issue reported by one owner was an unintended acceleration issue, which had a repair cost of $12,000 or more. This issue has led to the Outback lurching forward and colliding with garages, curbs, parking signs, and more. One owner noted that the airbag did not deploy, and there was no warning before the acceleration.

The NHTSA has issued three recalls for the 2019 Outback, but none address the most common problems. There are two recalls for the fuel pump failing, which can increase the crash risk. Another recall addresses spot welds that might not protect occupants in the event of a crash.

In summary, the 2019 Subaru Outback has been reported to have several common problems, including electrical issues, a weak windshield, and unintended acceleration. These issues have contributed to a higher rate of complaints compared to other model years and have left some drivers stranded or with costly repairs.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-13
  • VIN: 4S4BSAFC0K3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Infotainment unit failed. Battery died and was replaced with a larger capacity battery. Shortly after, the infotainment head unit became inoperable with ghosting of buttons. Then, the car would not hold a charge again and a bypass box for the digital communication center is being installed today under a recall. The ghosting/inoperable infotainment center remains non-functional and is apparently a separate issue? It randomly beeps and selects buttons, which is distracting. Unit has to be shut off to avoid this.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-08
  • VIN: 4S4BSANC4K3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Battery goes dead after not using car for 4 days. Subaru said the battery that came with the car was not strong enough. There was a lawsuit, but i missed the date to buy a new battery. I bought a strong battery, but problem happed again. Based on many forum messages, there is a parasitic battery drain while car is off. Problem is tied to Starlink Fuse. Also saw a new lawsuit on the fact that Starlink is trying to connect to 3G network, which no longer exists. Subaru is not fixing this problem. Google Subaru 2019 Starlink battery, it is all over the place.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-19
  • VIN: 4S4BSAFC7K3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: DCM battery drain and bad head unit display. The class action law suit does not cover the fix for the battery drain problem. Just a new battery. My is the battery continues to drain. I cannot afford to replace the problem DCM. I had to pull that fuse as a fix. I now do not have fro t speakers or Bluetooth. My CarPlay maps no longer tell me where I need to turn. Causing me to looks at the display more frequently. This is not good in busy areas. The other issue is with the head unit. When it gets warm and humid, the display doesn’t work. It clicks all over causing issues with CarPlay, Bluetooth and the radio. This is due to moisture getting in the display. Again causing problems and distractions. This will cause accidents if it hasn’t already. There are a lot of complaints out there for this as well as the DCM battery drain.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: 4S4BSENC3K3
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: To the CA Automotive Repair Bureau, [XXX] complaint, In 2022, I bought a new Outback at Albany Subaru. In October 2024, my car has 33,000 miles and I've had all of my 3,000-mile oil changes, inspections, and Warranty repairs done by Albany Subaru. I pay $100 for each repair that's covered under Subaru's extended Warranty. In 2023, the car's Dashboard Computer/Radio Head Unit was repaired, I drove the car for a few days, but the Head Unit was defective, so Subaru changed the Head Unit. This cost me (3) three trips to Subaru, which is 7.8 miles from my home, UBER costs, and three $100 Warranty payments. I'm a small business owner and had to pay employees extra to remain at work so I could drop off and pick up my car. Most times Subaru didn't give me a loaner car. Weeks later, I was driving up a hill and could not correctly steer my car, I thought I might crash, so I stopped driving my new car. I only drive on paved roads and I bought my Subaru because of Subaru's quality and safety reputation. I returned my car to Albany Subaru. My car's Steering or front end seemed loose and not right. Subaru told me I needed an alignment. I paid for an alignment. I drove my car home, but again, the Steering didn’t seem right, it was still loose and shaking. A day later, I returned my car to Subaru and they readjusted and tightened the Steering Box. Subaru called me at home and stated I needed an oil change, an alignment, and (4) four new tires, and brakes, which I agreed to the oil change. The next day, I picked the car up and spoke to the Service Managers about my concerns with the new car Steering, and stated to them that Subaru Bloggers are sharing that there should be a Recall on Subaru Steering Columns and other repair issues that could result in Lemon Law Lawsuits against Subaru. The Service Manager Nikki Ali and a Mechanic stated that Subaru has Steering Column issues but that Subaru has not yet issued a National Recall, but may replace Steering Columns. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: 4S4BSANC1K3

  • Summary: This morning, while stopped at a red light, my foot on the brake, my car suddenly revved and jolted forward. Luckily, no one was in front of me, and I quickly put the car in neutral and pressed harder on the brake pedal. The car was then ok. I see that there is a Class Action Suit filed by the law firm of Berger Montague, since many other owners of Subaru have had this complaint. You need to have Subaru recall these vehicles ASAP.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
  • VIN: 4S4BSENC8K3
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: After driving approximately 240 miles since our last stop, we stopped for gas. The car would not start. It sounded like it was trying to turn over but couldn't. Even when we let up on the start button the vehicle was still trying to start until we hit the button again (this is not normal). All battery functions were still working. The car only had about 38,500 miles on it. After trying multiple times to start it and googling, we suspected a fuel issue. We had the car towed to a local Subaru dealer. The dealer confirmed the fuel pump was the problem and replaced the part. More research revealed a fuel pump recall for certain production dates of the 2019 Subaru Outback, but ours is not currently part of the recall. We contacted Subaru and reported the issue. They opened a case for it. When we picked up the car, Subaru had paid for the repair. In hindsight, we are lucky the car did not stall while driving on the interstate at 70mph as that could have caused serious issues and injury to ourselves and/or others. There were no warning lights or other symptoms on that day. There had been some starting issues approximately 1-2 months earlier, but we had replaced the battery and thought that fixed it. We asked for the part but the Subaru dealer where the repair was made kept the part. In addition to the safety concerns, this incident also resulted in personal financial burden as we were around 600 miles from home enroute to a vacation destination and had to uber to a car rental place, rent a car and pay for one night in a hotel. We believe the recall needs to be expanded to include more production dates. By expanding the recall, we hope this would prevent others from having to go through this situation and be at risk. We also hope Subaru would be required to reimburse us for the out-of-pocket expenses that resulted from this issue and provide an extended warranty.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
  • VIN: 4S4BSENC9K3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The infotainment system on my 2019 Subaru Outback has failed. The problem arose suddenly. The system is randomly cycling through radio stations, the touch screen has stopped responding to being touched, the gps apps stopped working properly and across the board the unit no longer works. The touchscreen also appears to have bubbling under the surface of the screen, which may be contributing to the problem. This failure has deprived me of access to important apps -- gps, vehicle maintenance records, bluetooth phone calls. The constant beeping and cycling is an unwanted distraction. For now, the rear back up camera still seems to be working, but if I'm forced to turn off the touch screen, it obviously won't be of any help. I am bringing the car to the dealership tomorrow.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
  • VIN: 4S4BSANC6K3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: We had dealt with a parasitic battery drain issue related to the DCM, which was improperly addressed by Johnson Subaru of Cary. The dealership bypassed the problem, which was not what we requested or expected. While they have stated they will replace the DCM once parts become available, this is unacceptable, given that we paid for this part with the initial purchase. If they follow through with the replacement, that would resolve one issue, but their initial response seemed like an attempt to avoid responsibility. After the DCM was replaced, a new issue arose: the radio head unit became inoperable, experiencing severe malfunctions. The seems like it could also be related to the replacement of the DCM bypass. The head unit changes radio stations and screens on its own, making it inoperable to control or even shut off. This is clearly a safety concern, particularly since the delamination and malfunctioning unit registers random touches, which could cause changes to any of the settings. The head unit serves as the primary control interface, and this unpredictability is highly distracting—especially with a [XXX] using the vehicle. Subaru of America has offered $1,000 towards the replacement, but this is insufficient, considering the widespread nature of this issue across many models. The quote from the dealer is 1415.00 and the 1000.00 will not cover the cost. This problem should be addressed through a recall, as safety is a major concern. Additionally, we incurred unrecovered battery costs from the DCM issue and had to purchase a jump-start kit after being stranded multiple times. Subaru's delay in addressing these issues with a recall is troubling, and their offer of $1,000 suggests they acknowledge responsibility, but this issue requires a formal recall rather than piecemeal compensation. The head unit failure has been diagnosed as the specific issue with my 2019 Subaru Outback and must be added to the recall list. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4S4BSATC9K3
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While turning into a parking spot my wife had foot on the brake and vehicle accelerated over parking bumpers and into a fence and ultimately was stopped by a combination of a tree and the fence car drove through. This collision prevented her from crossing pedestrian sidewalk and continuing into Southbound traffic lane of state hwy. This incident put not only my wife at risk but also potentially any pedestrians or southbound vehicles. There were no system failures or warnings prior to my wife's arrival to her appointment. As mentioned this occurred within an approximate 5 second time frame. It is unknown as to what if any warnings occurred prior to/during the crash as my wife was pushing the brake to park when the sudden acceleration occurred. The braking system seems to have failed along with the sudden acceleration. The Automatic Braking System didn't engage, nor did the parking collision system. All our other Subaru's (including this vehicle have the collision warning and automatic braking systems) The dealership did not try to replicate the incident but all warning systems appear to be functioning correctly at this time. Following the accident I first reported the incident to my dealership where I purchased the vehicle. The initial damage estimate is forthcoming but Subaru tech indicated it will be may thousands of dollars to repair. I will follow-up next with Subaru's National Customer Care (per conversation with dealer) At the dealership (Southern Oregon Subaru) I had a safety/drive-ability inspection performed. Vehicle was given a clearance to drive, but obviously my wife refuses to drive it. Subsequent to the accident, we learned there are over 200 similar reports to NHTSA for this exact issue. We will also submit claim to insurance provider USAA.

  • Summary: The infotainment / touch screen system in my vehicle is malfunctioning and causing a safety issue. Due to bubbles on the screen I can not effectively use the back up camera. Additionally, the system will randomly make noises, make phone calls and change settings without warning. When this happens it creates a substantial distraction the the driver and causes me to have to pick up my phone to disconnect and address the concerns. I also need to turn the system on and off repeatedly. In the current state, I’m unable to use any navigation features as well.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
  • VIN: 4S4BSANC3K3
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While driving in the fast lane on Interstate 5 at a speed of approximately 70MPH, with cruise control on, during clear dry conditions, my automatic emergency brake system engaged and made my vehicle come to an abrupt and complete stop in the fast lane. I lost complete control of my vehicle. I was unable to steer or accelerate. Once I stopped, I was able to use my accelerator, but very quickly my vehicle abruptly stopped again and I could not steer it. After I stopped for the second time, I was then able to then accelerate slowly and pull off the freeway into the wide left shoulder. When I turned the car off and then back on again to get out of danger, I disengaged the cruise control, and I was able to get back on the freeway and out of the fast lane. It was a clear day, no clouds, no shadows, no birds, no vehicles right in front of me or next to me. There was NO warning lamp or alarms prior to the braking. There was no debris or excessive dirt on my windshield. My husband and I were certainly in danger of being rear ended at a high speed, but miraculously, the vehicles behind us were able to stop and/or pull into the left shoulder to avoid a collision. Not only were we at risk of serious injury or death, but there very easily could have been a multi-car pile up on the freeway with many people at risk of injury. My car is currently at my local Subaru dealership and they are investigating the problem. They have not been able to reproduce the issue yet, but are bringing in another specialist tomorrow. I felt this issue absolutely needed to be reported as it is a very serious safety issue. I do not trust my vehicle any more.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 4S4BSAJC7K3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The head unit developed what appear to be bubbles under the screen. Now, it's barely usable. It randomly responds to touch. It turns itself on and off randomly. None of this sounds like a safety issue until you're driving down the freeway at speed and the radio randomly comes on blaring loud music. It's incredibly jarring and could easily cause an accident. We reached out to the dealer who inspected it and was very aware of the problem as it seems to affect a very large number of people. Following that, they reached out to Subaru of America who admitted there was a problem and offered to pay for slightly more than half of the repair.

Negative Subaru Outback 2019 car reviews

  1. Imani Wunsch 2024-11-19

I really like the Subaru, but there is one feature that I find downright dangerous. When using cruise control and the car length setting, the SUV has a tendency to accelerate to the car ahead, which has caused me to unintentionally exceed the speed limit. I have reported this issue to the dealer, but unfortunately, they have not taken it seriously. Additionally, the SUV over-corrects, so it's important to keep both hands on the wheel at all times to avoid drifting into another lane. I plan to report these safety concerns to the appropriate authorities as I believe they are important to address.

  2. Roberto Skiles 2024-11-10

The windshield of our Outback cracked after only 4 months. We were disappointed to find out that this is a common issue with older Outbacks, as there have been thousands of similar problems reported. Unfortunately, the cost of repair is quite high, and we have decided to sell the car. It is disappointing that Subaru did not address this issue effectively.

  3. Wilfrid Daniel 2024-10-02

While driving down the highway, my windshield cracked on the bottom left or driver's side. Although there was no impact on the windshield, it started as a 5-inch crack from the bottom up with a very small divot, and then quickly spread to a 15-inch crack. I brought the car to the dealership within 24 hours, and they filed a claim with Subaru. Unfortunately, the claim was denied, as they believed the crack was caused by an outside force due to the tiny divot. However, I believe that a small divot can occur from a stress crack or from spontaneously cracking. The dealership quoted me just under $700 for the repair, which was not ideal. I called Subaru customer service, and they quickly offered $500 to help with the repair, but it did not cover the entire cost. I am concerned about the recurring problem of spontaneously cracking windshields, and I do not feel safe driving my car with a subpar windshield. It is important that this safety issue is addressed by Subaru. Additionally, the eyesight technology only works with the factory windshield, which is a concern. I hope that Subaru can take this issue seriously and find a solution to ensure the safety of their customers.

I purchased a 2019 Outback Limited not quite 2 months ago and drove it from Chicago to Phoenix. While the ride is comfortable, I have noticed that the acceleration is really poor, making it tough to pass slow vehicles. Additionally, we turned off the lane assist as it got to be annoying. Unfortunately, the same week we paid our first car payment, I went out to our driveway and noticed that the windshield had cracked. It was facing the garage and the crack appeared to have begun on the left side of the windshield. There was no evidence of a stone or rock. Although Subaru initially denied the claim, after contacting customer service, they have agreed to pay for the replacement windshield and calibration of the eye. Since we just moved to a new state, we use the GPS a lot, but unfortunately, about 50% of the time, it either takes its time loading or just freezes. It's to the point where we use our phone instead. While I spent over $40,000 for the vehicle, I would not recommend it. I hope this feedback helps improve future models.

The handling and acceleration are good, although not exceptional. While the CVT and power-steering may leave you feeling a bit disconnected from the road, the steering does seem to self-adjust, which is a nice feature. It would have been great if there was a settable 'drive mode' (sport, comfort), but overall the comfort and new safety and infotainment features are good. The touchscreen does have some glare issues on sunny days due to its reclined position and lack of 'hooding', but this is a minor issue. The internal storage compartments are a bit small and few in number, especially in the back cargo area. Additionally, some of the hard plastic materials on the doors and wimpy hardware may wear out prematurely. The Limited model does not come with standard wheel arch molding and the stock tires are more suited for passenger vehicles than light trucks in terms of width, tread, and wet/frozen precip. traction. While the MPG is not as high as expected, it is still a decent 16.2-16.5, which is comparable to the 2005 V6 235 HP 4-Runner with similar acceleration. Overall, the Outback is a solid choice for those looking for a reliable and comfortable vehicle for their MTB hauling needs.

Positive Subaru Outback 2019 car reviews

  1. Brock Hermiston 2024-11-23

I recently traded in my 2018 Subaru 2.5 Legacy Limited for a 2019 Subaru 2.5 Outback Limited because I missed the versatility of an SUV. Although I loved my Legacy, I found that the Outback rode even better and was just as fuel-efficient. It's also incredibly quiet and comes with all the electronic safety features I had on my Legacy. When comparing it to the Honda CRV, I found that the Outback was roomier and offered more amenities at a lower cost. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my decision. Despite some criticisms about the Outback 2.5's power and acceleration, I've found it to be more than sufficient. With 2500 miles on the clock, I have no regrets whatsoever. The 2019 Subaru 2.5 Outback Limited is an excellent car.

  2. Gabe Koelpin 2024-11-22

My dealer was kind enough to provide me with a brand new (only 12 miles on the odometer!) 2.5 Premium while my Ford F-150 was being serviced. I've had the pleasure of driving it for over a week and several hundred miles. The car is quite comfortable and the fit, finish, and materials are impressive given the price point. The car I am using has both available packages, making it a very well-equipped car. It boasts a sunroof, power rear hatch, blind spot warnings, three-stage heated seats, and many other features to enjoy. I particularly appreciate the auto high beams, and the cruise control that compensates for traffic in front of you. The stereo sounds okay, but not great. During an eight-hour day of driving, the seat was comfortable enough. So, why wouldn't I buy one? Well, it's a bit slow, and it feels even slower than it actually is. The engine is quite noisy under load, and if you floor it, the engine makes a lot of noise but doesn't seem to accelerate any faster. The handling is just adequate on turns and exit ramps. Even though it's not particularly tall, it handles like a tall vehicle. Also, on a 400-mile trip, 95% of which was highway driving, I only got 25.5 mpg, which is not even close to the 28/32 mpg claimed on the window sticker. I would recommend the car only if you are willing to accept barely adequate power and acceleration with only fair gas mileage. The Edmunds review was spot on in its description of engine performance.

  3. Mason Romaguera 2024-10-29

Firstly, I must say that the legendary aura surrounding Subaru's handling of winter weather and bad roads is completely real. This car is second to none in the snow and can handle 90% of bad/off-road conditions that a truck can. The quality of the interior also meets or exceeds most luxury brands. Additionally, the car boasts impressive safety and tech features. However, on the downside, I find the seats to be uncomfortable with a lack of thigh support and padding that's harder than it needs to be. Furthermore, it does surprisingly poorly in the area of NVH, with road noise and ride quality being much worse than expected. I've also noticed quite a few different creaks and rattles.

  4. Leopoldo Block 2024-10-18

The 3.6 R engine is really impressive! It's so quiet that it feels like you're flying in an airplane. The interior is also very quiet and comfortable, with premium java leather. The steering is incredibly easy to handle. In comparison, the limited and lower editions don't look as good as this one. The handling on the road is exceptional, and it has all the bells and whistles you could want. Plus, it's great for towing my boat and has a lot of safety features. Overall, I'm really happy with it so far!

Hey there! I wanted to give you a heads up about an issue some Subaru Outback owners have been experiencing with cracked windshields. It seems to be a common problem and there are even some class action suits related to it. If you happen to encounter this issue, just know that you're not alone. When I brought it up to my service advisor, they didn't seem to be aware of the problem, but I found some information online that suggests otherwise. Just thought you might want to know!
