2005 Cadillac Cts problems

cadillac logo

The Cadillac CTS is a luxury car, manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 2003 until 2019 across three generations.

Initially available as a 4-door sedan on the GM Sigma platform, GM had offered the second generation CTS in three body styles: 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, and 5-door sport wagon also using the Sigma platform — and the third generation was offered only as a sedan, using a stretched version of the GM Alpha platform. High performance sedan variants were offered for each generation, as the CTS-V — with wagon and coupe variants offered for the second generation.

Wayne Cherry and Kip Wasenko designed the exterior of the first generation CTS, marking the production debut of a design language marketed as "Art and Science," first used on the Evoq concept car. John Manoogian III directed the second generation CTS design. Bob Boniface and Robin Krieg designed the exterior of the third generation CTS.

The CTS ended production in 2019 and was replaced by the CT5, which shared its platform with the third and final generation of the CTS in addition to the smaller CT4.

Common 2005 Cadillac Cts problems

The Cadillac CTS 2005 is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The following are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Steering Wheel Position Sensor Failure: The steering wheel position sensor failure is another common problem that plagued this model. This issue can result in the vehicle acting unexpectedly, like engaging the cruise control, jerking side to side, or trying to brake. Replacing the steering wheel position sensor will cost around $100 outside labor.
  • Engine Problems: Many owners have reported engine problems like rough idling, engine failure, and stalling. Mainly, these issues are caused by a seized motor, worn camshaft, or a faulty engine control module (ECM) sensor.
  • Transmission Problems: Numerous CTS models contended with transmission system issues which are mainly attributed to fluid leaks, ruptured transmission seals, and a faulty torque converter. These issues can lead to difficulty shifting, slipping gears, and ultimately transmission failure.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: Several owners of the Cadillac CTS 2005 have reported excessive oil consumption, where the car burns a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. This issue can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Ignition System Failure: The ignition system of the Cadillac CTS 2005 is known to fail, causing the car to become inoperable. This issue can be dangerous, as it may cause the car to stall unexpectedly, especially while driving.
  • Radiator Failure: The radiator of the Cadillac CTS 2005 is prone to failure, which can lead to engine overheating and damage. This issue can also cause the transmission to fail, as it relies on the cooling system to operate properly.
  • Drive Shaft Failure: The drive shaft of the Cadillac CTS 2005 is known to fail, which can cause the car to become inoperable. This issue can be dangerous, as it may cause the car to stall unexpectedly, especially while driving.
  • Key Failure: The key of the Cadillac CTS 2005 is known to fail, which can cause the ignition system to become inoperable. This issue can be dangerous, as it may cause the car to stall unexpectedly, especially while driving.

These common problems with the Cadillac CTS 2005 can lead to significant repair costs and inconvenience for its owners. It is essential to address these issues promptly to avoid further damage and ensure the safety of the vehicle's occupants.

STEERING,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-06
  • VIN: 1G6DP567550
  • Components: STEERING,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: During normal driving, my service stibilatrak light comes on. While the message is on, the TCS kicks in and it grabs the wheel and stops the car. I've been reared ended once and two barely missed collisions. When the TCS activates, it stops the car completely and the only way to drive the car is to turn it off for a few second and then restart it. That resets the computer and turn the message light off. The TCS or ABS does not come on in the dash, just the stilibatrak message in the message center. Once it's turned off, it does not come on until the next time the TCS activates. I've had several diagnostic tests to check the problem or get a code but there is no code. I've been told that the car is clear of codes. The dealer cannot find a code or the problem. I've spent several hundred dollars on trying to locate the problem. The car, as is, is a death trap. I can't drive it because I don't know when the traction will kick on. I've taken good care of my car, nice bodywork and low milage but it's not safe to drive and no one knows how to fix it, including the dealer. At $200 an hour to try to find the problem is unforeseeable financially on my pension. One option is to junk the car for $200. I can't donate or sale it because it will not pass MD inspection. I can't trade it; I can't afford another car note. I've had this issue for almost a year. This happens every time I drive it, so I had to buy another car which I was not ready to buy. No major damage to report.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-09
  • VIN: 1G6DP567050
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Transmission cooler line fittings have dissimilar metals causing the threads inside the radiator transcooler to strip and dump coolant into Transmission lines and on road along with what was the transmission fluid as well as steam rolling out blocking vision through my windshield going uphill on a dangerously busy road crossing. This is a well known manufacturing defect that has yet to be handled. This could have gotten me and my 3 year old son seriously hurt by sudden loss of power and slick roadways not being able to avoid or brake properly or even steer away from on coming collision. The dissimilar metals are aluminum nut with a mild steel washer backed by a stainless steel washer before it contacts the radiator. This car has 101k miles and has been babied it's entire life. And when I see the 4 brake lines are about to rust out after all the repairs that have already been done. This is just poor quality material and craftsmanship. Easily could have been avoided by simply using a different metal than mild steel between dissimilar metals.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-09
  • VIN: 1G6DP567650
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I JUST PURCHASED THIS CAR IN FEBRUARY 2019 AND IT WENT DOWN IN LATE APRIL OR EARLY MAY OF THIS YEAR. THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON FOR A FEW DAYS THEN IT WOULD GO OFF FOR A FEW DAYS. THE ENGINE WOULD RATTLE WHEN FIRST CRANKED AND THEN IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE IT WOULD CONSTANTLY KEEP TRYING TO CRANK BUT NEVER WOULD AND NOW IT IS COMPLETELY OUT. I HAD IT TOWED TO MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD TO PUT 5 QUARTS OF OIL IN IT BUT I HAD THE OIL CHANGED A MONTH BEFORE THE CAR DIED. THEY SAY THE OIL IS GOING SOMEWHERE BUT WHERE? I WAS ALSO TOLD THE TIMING CHAIN HAD FAILED. WHEN THIS HAPPENS IT CAN CAUSE THE PISTONS AND EVERYTHING ELSE TO FAIL WITH THE ENGINE. IT WILL COST ME OVER $2000 TO GET REPAIRED. THIS IS RIDICULOUS! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. CADILLIAC MAKES EVERYTHING SO EXPENSIVE SO I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GETTING ONE UNLESS YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY AFFORD IT AND NOT BE IN DEBT BEHIND IT. I WAS IN LOVE WITH THIS CAR BUT THIS IS HORRIBLE. THIS IS MY SECOND TIME TRYING TO GET IT REPAIRED AND NOW I'M DONE.

2005 Cadillac Cts recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2005 Cadillac Cts.

2014-09-09
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V vehicles manufactured October 6, 2003, to March 15, 2007, and 2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V vehicles manufactured June 23, 2005, to March 15, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the electrical terminals of the fuel pump module may overheat resulting in the melting of the flange material.
  • Consequence: If the flange melts, a hole may be created allowing the fuel pump to leak fuel, causing the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel module and fuel tank jumper harness, free of charge. GM sent out interim notices in late October. The recall began on March 12, 2015. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14405.
2014-07-02
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 2, 2014 that they are recalling 554,328 model year 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured August 16, 2001, to April 28, 2014, and 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX vehicles manufactured March 20, 2003, to August 11, 2006. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 15, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14172.

THIS FLEXING CAN BREAK THE CONNECTIONS IN THE MAT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE SENSOR MAY NOT DETECT THE PRESENCE OF A FRONT SEAT PASSENGER AND WILL DISABLE THE AIR BAG.
  • Consequence: NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH NECESSITATING THAT AIR BAG'S DEPLOYMENT MAY REDUCE PROTECTION OF THE PASSENGER AND INCREASE THE RISK OR SEVERITY OF INJURY TO THEM.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT MARCH 15, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 AND AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Negative 2005 Cadillac Cts car reviews

  1. Jeffrey Simonis 2024-04-02

Although I have had a negative experience with this car, it is important to note that I have taken proper care of it and followed all recommended maintenance procedures. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the entire valve train at 70,000 miles for $4500 and now at 87,000 miles a connecting rod has failed, requiring a new engine for $6100. Despite my disappointment, I believe that this is an isolated incident and not representative of the quality of all GM cars. However, I will be exploring other options for my future purchases.

Hello! I've been the proud owner of my CTS since it only had 8 miles on it. I was able to get an impressive 75K miles out of the first set of brakes, which I attribute to my religious maintenance of the car. However, I must admit that I've had some issues with the car's quality. As I approach 100K miles, the car seems to be getting worse. Unfortunately, I was told by Capital in Atlanta, GA that they didn't install an oil light in this year's model. While the car alerts me of everything else, it doesn't warn me of low oil. Despite these issues, I still appreciate my Cadillac, but I don't think I'll be buying another American car anytime soon.

The premature wear and tear on the leather of the driver's seat, along with the peeling of the leather-type material around the joy stick element and the black paint around the stereo CD, are concerning issues that require attention. Additionally, the electronic seats on the driver's side produce an unpleasant squeaking sound when moving forward and backward, which needs to be addressed. As an expert in this field, I can confidently say that these issues are likely due to manufacturing defects and can be resolved with proper maintenance and repair. It is important to address these issues promptly to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your vehicle.

Positive 2005 Cadillac Cts car reviews

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2005 CTS that I bought brand new from the Cadillac dealer on Broadway in Oakland (although the name has changed since then). I'm happy to report that even with 291,456 miles on it, my car is still running great! I know some reviews mention it drinking a lot of oil, but I haven't had that issue at all. I make sure to get my oil changed every 5,000-7,000 miles like clockwork. I did have to replace the transmission at 110,000 miles, which cost me $3500, but other than that, it's just been the usual brakes, tires, and oil changes. Of course, there have been some minor issues along the way, especially after it hit 200,000 miles, but overall, I have to say that this has been the BEST CAR EVER! People are always amazed when they hear how many miles I have on it. I keep waiting for something to go wrong, but it just hasn't happened yet!

The 2005 Cadillac CTS is a fantastic car all around. The exterior design is stunning and the interior is just as great, providing both comfort and luxury. The V6 engine rated at 255 hp provides excellent acceleration and the vehicle is very easy to control, giving the driver a sense of confidence on the road. The cabin is also very quiet and the shocks are top-notch. Overall, the 2005 Cadillac CTS is a wonderful car that provides both style and performance.

  3. Hudson Cartwright 2024-09-19

I purchased my 2005 CTS Luxury Sport in October 2004 with 300 'demo' miles on it and have driven it extensively. Currently, the car has 97,000 miles on it and I have had minimal complaints. Overall, I would not go back to the '97 Audi A4 I traded in for it (the Caddy blows its doors off). Although the 3.6 is known for oil consumption, it was purposely built at the high end of tolerances to free up horsepower. The consumption remains just under 1 quart per 2000 miles, which is within specification. Apart from brakes and tires, I have had a water pump, rear differential seal, and a headlight module replaced (all under warranty). I absolutely love the car, and it remains rattle and wind noise free after 97k miles.

I love my CTS! It's my favorite car yet, even compared to other makes like BMW. While I did have to replace my tires sooner than in previous vehicles due to fun driving excursions, I have no complaints at this point. Living in the south, I have no problems with snow and/or ice, and it handles well in the rain. This being my first Cadillac, I'm already planning to purchase a new CTS this coming year!

My car has not been performing as expected in terms of both fuel efficiency and overall performance. I am confident that there is an issue with my vehicle that needs to be addressed. Despite the reviews I have read, my personal experience with this car has not been up to par with my previous vehicles.
