2018 Volkswagen Atlas problems

The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen since 2017. Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.
Overview
Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.
The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

Common 2018 Volkswagen Atlas problems
The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. The worst problem category for the 2018 Atlas is engine problems.
Electrical system problems are also prevalent in the 2018 Atlas. Models equipped with a start-stop system have experienced battery drainage, sometimes within just two months. Faulty electrical systems have also been linked to transmission failures. A clockspring in the steering system has been known to make noises when the steering wheel is turned.
The transmission in the 2018 Atlas has also had issues, with loud noises reported when accelerating from a stop or low speed. This problem is often accompanied by the check engine light illuminating randomly, which can indicate engine stalling caused by a fuel system leak, increasing the risk of fire.
Another Volkswagen Atlas problem is coolant leaking, which might result in the engine overheating. If this problem occurs, you should be alerted by the low coolant light on your dashboard. This is usually caused by faulty head gaskets, coolant tanks, and water pumps.
In summary, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas has several common problems, including engine, electrical, transmission, and coolant issues. These problems have led to numerous complaints and recalls, making the 2018 model year one to avoid for potential buyers.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 1V2AR2CA0JC
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The rack and pinion failed, and the steering wheel was very difficult to move and maneuver. According to the service advisor, it is known that if the Rack and Pinion is immersed in water due to floods, that causes the electronics of the system to fail. This causes the steering wheel to become very stiff and it is very hard to maneuver the car. Rain is very common in all parts of the world, including in Puerto Rico, and it is not safe to be driving a car that could 'lock' the steering wheel in any random occasion after a pouring rain event.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-16
- VIN: 1V2SR2CA3JC
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Our 2018 V6 SEL Volkswagen Atlas is the recipient of a defective fuel injection system. Through discussion with VW service and maintenance staff, as well as research in online VW specific forums, there is defective fuel injectors found in various VW Atlas year and differing engine vehicles. Our particular vehicle had a malfunctioning, defective fuel injector (fuel injector for Cylinder 6) which resulted in massive carbon build up. There is no real detection system for a faulty, leaky fuel injector according to VW service. The carbon build up began with misfiring check engine and ECP error codes. Upon taking it to the dealer, we were made aware that the carbon build up also resulted in mechanical failure of components within Cylinder 6. This would affect drivability of the vehicle while on the road, resulting in severe power or ability to drive loss. Other additional factors aside from the faulty fuel injection system, is the valve gasket was also leaking oil through to spark plugs 2-4, which could result in vehicle fire. We are not sure if the faulty gasket is a result of the faulty fuel injector system. The 2018 VW Atlas was a first year model release, and would not be surprised if significant design flaws and defects are a risk with this vehicle.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-12
- VIN: 1V2LR2CA7JC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: In June and early July of 2023 the vehicle’s engine shut off while driving at least 4 times. Shut off occurred while driving at low speeds while in a parking lot, coming out of an intersection, and when approaching a stop sign. When the car shuts off you lose control of steering and braking is difficult. You have to shift the vehicle into park and restart the engine. We took the vehicle to VW dealership who inspected and replaced the charcoal canister and N80 purge valve. Vehicle operated normally for 10 months until late April 2024. In the past month the vehicle has shut off a dozen times while in operation. Similar to before it occurs at low speeds while starting, stopping, turning, and even while driving in reverse. The vehicle is currently back at the dealership to address this. Their initial response was that they couldn’t reproduce this condition, and the check engine light doesn’t come on for this issue, so there’s nothing mechanically that they need to fix. I’m escalating this issue with VW service. This issue has not caused an accident yet, but very likely will if not addressed. Some basic research online indicates that this is a somewhat common issue with VW Atlas models. Someone needs to look into this situation before someone is killed.

The newer car has been excellent! I'm so glad to hear that your wife loves it and has absolutely no complaints. Thank you for choosing Volkswagen!

I traded my 2007 Audi Q7 for an Atlas SEL Premium and I couldn't be happier. The Atlas offers more room, better towing capacity, and more advanced technology, all while being $20,000 less expensive. Although the materials and acceleration may not be as good as the Audi, the comfort and quality of ride on the interstate, as well as the quietness of the Atlas at interstate speeds, are just as good if not better. The Fender sound system is also a major upgrade from the Bose system in my old Q7. The Atlas is much roomier and easier to access the third row, as well as the back seat. The factory towing capacity of 5000 lbs is a plus, and my travel trailer (3000 lbs) communicates with the car, including turn signals and anti-theft warning. While you cannot use a load weigh distribution hitch on any VW product, the Atlas still pulls the trailer with ease, although not as fast as the Audi. Overall, I believe that the Atlas is a fantastic SUV for the money.

The Atlas 2.0T boasts excellent acceleration and is 460 pounds lighter than its V6 counterpart. If you don't require AWD, this SUV is a better and more affordable option. With less weight and fewer cylinders, the Atlas 2.0T is notably more fuel-efficient, averaging 25.8 MPG on mostly city driving with regular gas during our week-long test drive. The entertainment center is user-friendly and produces excellent sound quality. We are pleased to report that we have experienced no issues with the engine or transmission, contrary to some customer reports.

You've owned it for a year and it's been flawless. Even after a year and 9500 miles, it has yet to go to the dealership for any reason. The 3.6 V6 is quiet and smooth, and the power is more than adequate. Although the fuel economy is slightly worse than expected, it's important to note that you do all city driving and your wife drives with a heavy foot. The interior quality is good, and adults have sat in the 3rd row and found it comfortable. Overall, the Atlas is a solid 3-row crossover that you can rely on.

We recently traded in our 2015 Honda Pilot for the new 2018 VW Atlas and it was an excellent decision! The interior space, including cargo and leg room, is fantastic! With two kids, it's so easy to move the seats to allow for third row access, much easier than our previous Pilot. The rear view camera provides a wide angle view and the headlights are incredibly bright, illuminating the entire roadway at night. The seats are very comfortable and the entertainment system is top of the line. Apple Car Play is a great feature that eliminates the need for a separate navigation system and works better than any navigation system we have ever used. The rear seat window shades (standard on the SE and SEL models) work perfectly for our kids. Overall, this is the best vehicle we have ever purchased. It feels high-end for a mid-range cost and looks great too! We have been driving it for about a month now and the MPG is pretty good, definitely comparable to other SUVs of that size. As of today, we are getting 23.5 mpg combined, according to the data in the car.

I absolutely loved my BRAND NEW Atlas when I first bought it! The Tourmaline blue R-Line SE w/ Tech Atlas looked so much better than any other vehicle around it. However, I did experience some issues with the fuel door falling off every time I filled up, and my vehicle taking longer to start up. I thought it may have been due to the change in weather, but unfortunately, my car wouldn't start one day. As someone who sells cars for a living, any time spent out of work is money out of my pocket, so I was understandably frustrated. I took my car to the dealership and was given a loaner while they worked on it. Although the fuel pump was on backorder, Jeff Newell, the new car manager at Village VW in Chattanooga, worked his magic and got me a part from another dealership overnighted. I was thrilled to have my car back within two days! However, I did experience another issue with my car acting funny and the fuel door still falling off every time I filled up. It turned out to be a purge valve issue, but overall, I am grateful for the dealership's help and support throughout the process. They replaced the faulty part, but when I made my first payment and called VW of America about the service visit, I was told that they had fixed it according to warranty and that was all they could do at the time. They advised me to let them know if it happened again. Two weeks later, on my day off, I heard a loud, ungodly noise from inside my car. I took videos of it and sent them to the service team, who advised me to drive it to the dealership immediately. Unfortunately, I had to spend over half the day at the dealership, where they informed me that the cooling fans and motor needed to be replaced. They didn't have a loaner, but I was told to drive my car and if it started to overheat, to pull over and call roadside assistance to tow it there. As I live in the South, where it is 90+ degrees every day in the summer, I was concerned about driving around with my two babies in the car. Finally, after getting in touch with the person who sold me the car, I was able to get a loaner. I called VW of America and asked for my vehicle to be bought back or replaced, as I no longer felt safe in it. Kim L left me a voicemail to call her back, but when I did, she was already out of the office. I called her every day for a week and left voicemail after voicemail, asking her to please give me a call back. While waiting for a call back, my start stop error keeps coming on but no check engine light so the service tech tells me it should be fine. So, my husband and I decided to take the kids and one of their big power wheel trucks into the Atlas for a day at the park on my day off, which is precious time because we both work 50-60 hours a week. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on when I started the Atlas and I had to bring it back to the dealership again. They put us in a 2017 Tiguan, but we couldn't fit the power wheel in it, so we had to cancel our park day. In the meantime, I tried calling Kim L at VW of America again, but she is out of the office until July 2nd. I understand that she might be busy, but it's frustrating that there is only one person in the entire region that can help me, especially when I am located in the same city as the plant. I hope to get this resolved soon.

I was really excited about the new Atlas, but I was a bit reluctant to buy it in the first year of production due to concerns about reliability, especially given our experience with the 'Touareg'. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on and I had to take it in for diagnosis. The issue was a fault that required a software update of the vehicle's computer. I picked up the car after the reprogramming, but the check engine light came back on within 50 miles. I took it in for a quick diagnosis and was told that it was a different fault and that I needed to bring it in for a complete diagnosis. After an entire day with the technician coordinating with VW engineers, I was informed that my catalytic converter needed replacing. Unfortunately, the converter was initially on back order for 4-6 weeks, and I had to drive with the check engine light on for 22 days. The service advisor emailed me to inform him if I experienced any driveability issues. I called VW customer service to complain, as my county requires emissions testing. The part was bumped up and arrived 21 days later. I'm going to have it installed, but my confidence in this Atlas's reliability has diminished. I will update if I experience any further problems.

We purchased our atlas almost a year ago and we used to love it. However, from the beginning, we experienced a throttle delay and it would jolt forward all of a sudden. In the last month and a half, we took it in for an oil change and ended up staying for 5 days for recalibration work, but unfortunately, the parts were back-ordered. We then had it back for a week before the start-stop error occurred and the check engine light came on. Once again, the parts were back-ordered and it was in the shop for a week. We had it back for another week before the car shut off right after I started it, and it said the immobilizer was active and would not turn back on. It finally did, but the EPC light and check engine light were on. I took my son to therapy and went home, and the lights went off, but the next day the same thing happened. It shut off and would not start, and when it did, the same thing happened with the EPC and check engine light. I drove it straight to the dealer this time, but I could not open the windows and the start-stop control error occurred again, along with other issues. It has been in the shop now for 2 weeks with back-ordered parts and no ETA, and we are not even sure if the parts they are replacing will fix it. We have had the catalytic converter replaced, which took 31 days at the dealership, and the balancing bar and transmission leak took 30 days to fix. Then, we had the transmission in emergency mode and the car safety warning less than 2 months later, which resulted in replacing it. Since then, the transmission is slow to respond and then jerks forward, and there are lots of noises like things are loose, which doesn't surprise me after having the front end and transmission area disassembled 3 times.

Update as of December 18, 2018: Unfortunately, I no longer have the Atlas as it was deemed unsafe to drive. However, I am now enjoying my new Japanese manufactured SUV! As of June 17, 2018, I have not seen any improvement in the safety and driver assist systems of the Atlas. On three separate occasions, the Atlas has stopped itself in a body-jarring fashion for no apparent reason, which is a major safety concern. Despite local Volkswagen engineers acknowledging these issues, Volkswagen of America continues to deny that it is a known issue. Due to these safety and injury concerns, I have decided to order a new SUV with Japanese engineering. While I am concerned about the effectiveness and consistency of the vehicle’s safety and driver assist systems, I am hopeful that my new SUV will be a safer option. I have experienced issues with the Autonomous Emergency Braking system, which failed to stop the vehicle when it was close to crashing into a stationary vehicle and abruptly stopped the vehicle when I was safely pulling out of a driveway. Additionally, the Lane Assist system is not reliable, as the car will sometimes counter-steer and sometimes not, regardless of the speed I am driving or how clear the lane markings are. The service advisor at my VW dealership informed me that other new Atlas owners have reported similar problems, but so far, no solutions have been found.

Ensure you do your research before purchasing a car, and opt for a reliable and safe option for your family. Although my first brand new car purchase and first VW initially made me happy, I experienced a very dangerous situation just 6 weeks into owning it. The dashboard displayed an alarming message 'Brake booster faulty', causing the brake pedal to become harder to press and resulting in a longer stopping distance. This occurred twice in one day, which was extremely concerning as it could have caused an accident due to the brakes not working properly. However, I took immediate action and contacted the dealer, who confirmed that a sensor needed to be replaced. Although this was not ideal, I am confident that the issue has been resolved. While I was disappointed with this experience, I am still satisfied with my purchase overall. It is important to note that gas consumption has been higher than my Chevy Tahoe. Perhaps purchasing a newly released car is not the best option, as unforeseen issues may arise. Nonetheless, I remain confident in my decision and will continue to enjoy my VW.
