The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. As the first four-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the two-door Bronco II. Within the current Ford SUV range in North America, the Explorer is slotted between the Ford Edge and Ford Expedition. As with the Ford Ranger, the Explorer derives its name from a trim package previously offered on the Ford F-Series pickup trucks.

The Explorer has been offered in multiple chassis and powertrain layouts. The first two generations were directly derived from the Ford Ranger, switching to a model-specific chassis for the third and fourth generations. The fifth generation was repackaged as a crossover SUV, adopting a variant of the Ford Taurus chassis architecture.

Alongside the five-door Explorer wagon, a three-door Explorer wagon was offered from 1991 to 2003, officially referred to as the Explorer Sport after 1999, serving as the direct replacement of the Bronco II; the 2001–2010 Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a crew-cab pickup derived from the model line. For police use, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility has been derived from the fifth and sixth-generation Explorer to replace the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (and the later Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan). Through rebranding, Mazda, Mercury, and Lincoln have sold versions of the Explorer; Lincoln currently markets the sixth-generation model line as the Lincoln Aviator.

For the North American market, the first four generations of the Explorer were produced by Ford at its Louisville Assembly Plant (Louisville, Kentucky) and at its now-closed St. Louis Assembly Plant (Hazelwood, Missouri); the model line is currently produced at Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois).

In 2020, CNBC reported the Ford Explorer range as the best-selling SUV of all time in America.

Common 2022 Ford Explorer problems

The 2022 Ford Explorer has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the powertrain, suspension, and interior features.

  • Suspension defects: The 2022 Explorer has also been reported to have suspension issues. Some owners have experienced a clunking noise from the front suspension, which can be a sign of a failing strut mount or control arm bushing.
  • Interior features: The 2022 Explorer's interior features have also been problematic. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including the touch screen randomly blacking out, making it impossible to use various functions such as the heater, phone, and backup camera.
  • Noises and leaks: Several owners have reported noises and leaks in their 2022 Explorers. These include wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping issues, air and water leaks, and rattling sounds when accelerating.

These issues have led to concerns about the overall reliability of the 2022 Ford Explorer, with Consumer Reports recommending avoiding the model due to its well below-average predicted reliability.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-29
  • VIN: 1FMSK7DH1NG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 1. I had received a Ford Motor Company Ford Customer Service Division, P.O. Box 19043, Dearborn, Michigan 48121-1904 Safety Recall Notice 23S55/NHTSA Recall 23V675 letter dated November 2023. 2. Below are my responses to above questions... - What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? ANSWER: A rear axle bolt may fracture. They have inspected months ago. - How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? ANSWER: I am concern for my wife's safety. - Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? ANSWER: Koons is very aware as I have reached out to service advisors, and sent correspondence (web site emails...don't have copies though) between APR24 - JUL24. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? ANSWER: Yes; months ago. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? ANSWER: Not that we are aware of. Our trigger was the letter sent to us in November 2023. Summary: The letter we received is dated November 2023, we started reaching out to Koons in April 2024, and constantly following up with them. All the same answer...waiting for the part to arrive. That only 5 of these parts come out once a week. I finally gave up in July 2024, as I advised them (by sending web site email, and sending service advisor cell phone a test that we communicate by) that I was going to report to problem to your agency. No response back from either of them. I have written down dates and each time I reached out to them with no luck at all, which is on the original recall letter. To be honest, I am very concern as this is my wife's vehicle to drive. I have advised her to use her parking brake when parking, but understand that there is other impacts if the axle would crack.

They are claiming it is our fault and my 3 year old did it with something sharp. You cannot see the back of the straps as they enter the car seat. We do have photos of the proof. We also know there is an ongoing investigation into evenflo for this very reason.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
  • VIN: 1FM5K8AB2NG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: This is a Utility Interceptor used by a police department, and we have two of them. The vehicle stalls out when trying to enter traffic. It will stall for 2 or 3 seconds with the accelerator pressed all the way to the floor. Ford Motor Company released a technical service bulletin and provided a software flash for the transmission. I had the vehicle serviced at Ford in Bloomington, Indiana, but the transmission software flash did not correct the problem. I then returned the vehicle to Ford and stated that it did not solve the problem. The service technician stated that they contacted an engineer, Ford, and they noted that it was the nature of that transmission and that nothing else could be done. The technician also noted that the vehicle will not upshift from 4th gear to 1st gear when trying to accelerate. The bottom line up front is that transmission stalling the way it does is a safety issue for a police department or any driver.

The third incident was on the road as I approached a car stopped for a red light. Again the brakes failed to engage, but I was able to avoid the car in front of me by swerving into the lane to the left. Fortunately no car was approaching on that lane this happened November 2023. The final incident again was on the road. The car in front of me was stopped for a left turn and I applied the brakes, the car did not stop so I swerved to the right onto a lawn and side swiped a tree before the brakes finally took hold. I was slowed down to about 30 MPH happened inJanuary 2024.. This failure in the car braking system has resulted in a substantial money loss . After these incidents I am no longer driving the car.
