The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).

With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).

The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 1997 Ford Club wagon problems

The 1997 Ford Club Wagon, like many vehicles, can experience a range of issues based on owner complaints. Here are some common problems and their details:

  • Brakes: The brakes are another critical safety feature. In this case, one mechanic recommended completely replacing the rotors, bearings, and pads, while the other suggested only cleaning them. The driver mentioned that the brakes didn't feel too bad, but it's essential to address this issue before the brakes deteriorate further or fail entirely. A gradual worsening of brake performance might not be noticeable, so it's safer to have them inspected and replaced if necessary.
  • Transmission Fluid Replacement: The transmission fluid should be replaced, especially since the vehicle has reached 80,000 miles. One mechanic suggested draining and replacing the fluid, while the other cautioned that if it's never been changed, the trans may be used to running on thicker fluid. In this case, replacing all the fluid could cause the transmission to slip. It's crucial to have the transmission inspected and serviced to ensure safe and reliable operation during the long trip.
  • Serpentine Belt: Both mechanics agreed that the serpentine belt and pulleys need replacement. However, the quoted labor cost of around $200 seems high compared to the estimated $70 for parts. It's advisable to double-check the estimate and ensure the correct belt is being used for the vehicle.
  • Spark Plugs and Air Filter: One mechanic suggested replacing the spark plugs and air filter, while the other found them to be in good condition. It's essential to ensure that the spark plugs are in good working order to avoid ignition problems, reduced fuel economy, and potential engine damage. A clogged air filter can also negatively impact engine performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Check Engine Light: Various issues can trigger the check engine light, such as a loose gas cap, faulty oxygen sensors, or catalytic converter problems. It's crucial to have the vehicle inspected and the underlying issue addressed to ensure safe and reliable operation, especially before a long trip.

In summary, it's essential to prioritize safety and reliability when preparing for a long trip. Addressing these common issues can help ensure a smoother and safer journey.

  • VIN: 1FMEU17L5VL
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: INCIDENT LIKE MANY OTHERS I HAVE HAD MY 1997 FORD EXPEDITION XLT BLOW A SPARK PLUG OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING FINE AND TROUBLE FREE WHEN A POP FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND A LOUD BANGING NOISE CAME FROM THE ENGINE HEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP ; WHO IN TURN CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. THE REPLY WAS THEY NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. MY LOCAL SERVICE TECH SAID THE REPAIR KIT ALONE WOULD COST $1,000,00. TO REPAIR IT HE SAID THAT FORD HAD ONLY USED 3 THREADS IN THE HEAD THAT FAILED, BUT ARE NOW REPLACING THEM WITH A 7 THREAD HEAD., THIS TELLS ME THAT THEY ARE VERY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT ARE WILLING TO LEAVE THEIR CUSTOMERS OUT TO DRY.. I GUESS THE SCARY PART ABOUT THAT IS I STILL HAVE 4 MORE 3 THREAD SPARK PLUG HOLES TO WORRY ABOUT BLOWING OUT,.I ABSOLUTELY FEEL THIS SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FORD MOTOR COMPANY WHO IS LOOKING FOR THE AMERICAN PUBLIC TO BUY IT'S TRUCKS. DAMAGE RESULTING IT WILL COST ME AS LITTLE AS $2,500.00 TO REPAIR THE CURRENT PROBLEM ( AND NO GUARANTY IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN). OR UP TO $5,500.00 TO REPLACE THE BUILT TOUGH 5.4 TRITON ENGINE. *TR

STEERING,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-02-01
  • VIN: 1FTEE1461VH
  • Components: STEERING,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
  • Summary: I AM GETTING IN TOUCH WITH YOU TO LET YOU KNOW ABOUT A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE AFTER MARKET STEERING EXTENSION DEVICE PUT ON ALOT OF HANDICAPPED VEHICLES, THIS PART IS PUT ON THESE CARS AND TRUCKS TO HELP ASSIST THE DRIVER IN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL . THE PROBLEM WITH THIS PART IS THAT IS NOT SAFE . WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TAKEN OFF OF THE SPLINED SHAFT THE NEW PIECE IS PUT ON AND DOES NOT EVEN HAVE A SPLINED CENTER TO FIT TIGHT ON THE SHAFT AND THE ONLY OTHER THING TO HOLD IT TIGHT IS 2 SET SCREWS. IF ONE OF THESE SET SCREWS WOULD WORK LOSE OR IF THE STEERING WHEEL WERE TURNED TO HARD THESE SET SCREWS WOULD WORK LOOSE AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD TURN BUT THE WHEELS WOULDN'T , OR THE OTHER WAY AROUND . I HAVE TALKED TO A AUTO REPAIR SPECIALIST ALONG WITH THE HEAD MECHANIC SUPERVISOR AT A FORD DEALERSHIP AND BOTH MEN SAID THAT THIS PART IS NOT VERY SAFE AND THEY WOULD NT WANT IT ON THEIR CAR OR TRUCK , I ALSO TALKED TO THE PERSON WHO INSTALLED THIS PART HE NO LONGER USES THIS ALUMINUM PART BECAUSE IT IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR THIS KIND OF STRESS THAT A STEERING WHEEL GOES THROUGH . I HOPE THAT YOU CAN MAKE THESE PARTS REPLACED BY THE COMPANIES SO THAT NO ONE WITH A MODIFIED HANDICAPPED STEERING COLUMN EXTENSION DOES NOT GET KILLED OR KILL SOMEONE ELSE , I WAS LUCKY TO FIND IT EARLY BUT MAYBE SOME ONE ELSE WON'T BE. THANK YOU SINCERELY [XXX]. *AK PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2000-07-06
  • VIN: 1FDLE40S6VH
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: DUE TO A BAD VALVE STEM, THE TIRE AND RIM WERE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE AND TAKEN TO A TIRE DEALERSHIP (BIG O TIRES) IN MONUMENT CO. FOR REPAIR. THE VALVE STEM WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED WITHOUT THE TRIE BEING REMOVED FROM THE RIM. THE TIRE WAS REINFLATED TO MANUFACTURER SPECSOF 80 PSI COLD. THE TIRE AND RIM WERE PICKED UP AND PLACED IN THE BACK OF MY JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE FOR TRANSPORTATION BACK TO MY RESIDENCE. AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES OF BEING IN THE BACK OF THE JEEP, THE TIRE EXPLODED TEARING A 6 INCH GASH IN THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE, AN INCH AND A QUARTER FROM THE TREAD SURFACE. THE TIRE HAD BEEN INFLATED ALL OF 10 MINUTES WHEN IT EXPLODED. I IMMEDEATELY RETURNED BACK TO BIG O TIRES AND CONFIRMED THE TIRE PRESSURE THEY HAD PLACED IN THE TIRE. I SHOWED THEM THE TIRE AND EXPLAINED HOW IT SEEMED TO SELD-DISTRUCT IN THE BACK ON MY VEHICLE. AGAIN, THE TIRE WAS NOT UNDER PRESSURE AS IT WAS ONLY IN THE BACK OF MY JEEP. THEY , BIG O TIRES, FELT THAT THERE HAD TO BE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN THE TIRE AND SUGGESTED THAT IT BE TAKEN TO FIRESTONE FOR EXAMINATION. THE TIRE WAS TAKEN TO FIRESTONE OF CHAPLE HILLS. UPON EXAMINATION, THEY IMMEDEATELY IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS THE TIRE BEING CUT FROM THE OUTSIDE AND NOT THEIR PROBLEM. I EXPLAINED THE NATURE OF THE INCIDENT NUMEROUS TIMES TO THE FIRESTONE PEOPLE BUT RECEIVED NO HELP. I RETURNED TO BIG O TIRES AND ADVISED THEM OF WHAT FIRESTONE HAD SAID. THEY EXPLAINED THAT A CUT IN THE TIRE COULD CLEARLY NOT BE THE CASE AS IF IT HAD BEEN CUT TO THE DEPTH OF CUTTING THE SIDEWALL BELTING, IT WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO HOLD THE PRESSURE THAT THEY HAD PUT INTO IT. THEY CONTINUE TO BELIEVE, AS DO I, THAT THERE WAS SOME TYPE OF DEFECT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TIRE. FIRESTONE TREATED ME AS IF I HAD CUT THE TIRE AND MADE UP A STORY IN ORDER TO SAVE HAVING TO PURCHASE A NEW TIRE. THERE WAS NO REASON TO PURCHASE A NEW TIRE, PRIOR TO THIS EXPLOSION, AS THE TREAD WEAR WAS MINIMAL. (DOT NUMBER: VOIL1XA366 TIRESIZE: LT22575R16)
