1994 Ford Escort problems

The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America. Produced across three generations, the first generation was a subcompact; the latter two generations were compact cars. Becoming highly successful in the marketplace, the Escort became the best-selling car in the United States after 1982, a position it would hold for much of the 1980s.

Produced across three generations, the Escort was the first world car developed by Ford, with the first-generation American Escort designed alongside Ford of Europe, who transitioned the Escort Mk III to front-wheel drive. During its production, the Escort also underwent a wide use of platform sharing and rebranding. The first generation served as the basis of the longer-wheelbase Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz, the two-seat Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 and was rebranded as the Mercury Lynx. The second generation was introduced for 1991, growing into the compact segment. Moving away from a shared design with Ford of Europe, the Escort now shared a platform with the Mazda 323 and sharing a body with the Ford Laser (a model line sold in Asia and Oceania); the Mercury Lynx was replaced by the Mercury Tracer. For 1997, the third generation served as an extensive redesign of the previous-generation sedan; the Escort ZX2 two-door was introduced, with the Mercury Tracer adopting a similar redesign.

Ford introduced the Ford Focus in North America for 2000 as its third "world car", phasing it in as the successor of the Escort. After 2000, the four-door Escort was moved primarily to fleet sales (with the coupe remaining available); production ended entirely after the 2002 model year. In contrast to the first-generation American Escort and Escort Mk III of Ford of Europe (and the Mondeo/Contour and Mercury Mystique), the Focus adopted a much larger degree of commonality between its European and North American variants, in effect, becoming the original world car Ford had originally envisioned with the Escort.

During its entire production, the Escort was produced by Wayne Stamping & Assembly in (Wayne, Michigan) and the first generation was also produced by Edison Assembly in (Edison, New Jersey), San Jose Assembly Plant in (Milpitas, California), and Oakville Assembly in (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) while the second and third generations were also produced by Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico).

Common 1994 Ford Escort problems

The 1994 Ford Escort is known to have several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include electrical problems, battery drainage, no start or no power, engine problems, car turning on but not wanting to go or no idle, and battery problems.

Electrical issues are one of the most frequently reported problems with the 1994 Ford Escort. These issues can manifest in various ways, such as the A/C, headlights, or key fob not functioning properly. For example, some owners have reported that their car's A/C won't work, headlights don't always work, and the remote lock doesn't always work. These electrical problems can be frustrating and may require professional help to diagnose and fix.

Another common problem with the 1994 Ford Escort is battery drainage. Some owners have reported that their car's battery dies when it's cold, and the battery becomes dead when the terminal is on the battery. This can be a significant issue, especially in cold weather, and may require replacing the battery or fixing the underlying electrical problem.

No start or no power is another common problem with the 1994 Ford Escort. Some owners have reported that their car acts as if the battery is dead, even though it has a brand new battery. This can be a significant issue, especially if it happens frequently, and may require professional help to diagnose and fix.

Engine problems are also common with the 1994 Ford Escort. Some owners have reported that their car cuts off when it's warm, and they have to wait a while before starting it again. This can be a significant issue, especially if it happens frequently, and may require professional help to diagnose and fix.

The car turning on but not wanting to go or no idle is another common problem with the 1994 Ford Escort. Some owners have reported that their car only goes on and doesn't want to start completely. This can be a significant issue, especially if it happens frequently, and may require professional help to diagnose and fix.

Battery problems are also common with the 1994 Ford Escort. Some owners have reported that their car's battery is buzzing under the dash, and there is no start or lights anywhere. This can be a significant issue, especially if it happens frequently, and may require professional help to diagnose and fix.

In addition to these common problems, the 1994 Ford Escort is also known for rust issues, which can cause significant damage to the car's chassis rails, rear wheel-arches, fuse box, and under the battery.

In summary, the 1994 Ford Escort is known to have several common problems, including electrical issues, battery drainage, no start or no power, engine problems, car turning on but not wanting to go or no idle, and battery problems. These issues can be frustrating and may require professional help to diagnose and fix. Additionally, the car is known for rust issues, which can cause significant damage to the car's chassis rails, rear wheel-arches, fuse box, and under the battery. Electrical faults are rare, but the fuse box can rot through and cause all kinds of problems. After 50,000 miles, the shock absorbers and suspension bushes can wear and cause MoT test failure.

Was Ford Escort a good car?

The Escort has been Ford's bread-and-butter car for over 15 years. Think of it as the car that brings consumers into the Ford family. The Escort's low price, decent reliability and above-average crash test scores have consistently offered recent college grads and young families an attractive set of American wheels.

Why did Ford discontinue the Escort?

As the years went on, the Escort became less popular, less prized, and more dated to the point where the vehicle subtly faded out from the public eye, as opposed to going out with a bang and attracting attention. The Ford Focus was launched in 2000 while the Escort was still being produced.

How fast is a Ford Escort at top speed?

The car's top speed was 150 mph (240 km/h), rivalling cars like the Audi Coupé S2, BMW M3, Nissan 300ZX, Toyota Supra and Porsche 968 and comfortably outperforming traditional "hot hatchbacks" like the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

IN ADDITION, THE AIRBAG FAILED TO DEPLOY IN A ROLLOVER CRASH GOING SOME 75 MPH. Negative 1994 Ford Escort car reviews

  1. Harley Stracke 2024-09-29

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Escort. I've put a lot of miles on it - from 111,000 to 172,000 - and it's been a great car overall. I did have a bit of trouble with the transmission pump at 118,000 miles, which required a rebuild, but looking back, I probably could have avoided that if I had replaced the pump earlier. The A/C and heat have stopped working, but other than that, the car runs great - no leaks and no oil usage. I even let it sit for a year and a half, but it started right up and runs like a charm. I really love my 'scort and would definitely buy another one!

  2. Timmothy Hyatt 2024-09-28

I may have just gotten a lemon, but unfortunately, I've had a lot of issues with my car. Only 500 miles into owning it, the AC stopped working and I had to pay an exorbitant $400 to have the compressor replaced. On top of that, the radiator started leaking and even my speedometer doesn't work properly. While I know many people who love this car, I personally don't see the value in spending the money on it. For just a little more, you can get a comparable Civic with better reliability and mileage.

  3. Dejuan Williamson 2024-09-04

This car is actually quite enjoyable to drive!

  4. Jerome Fritsch 2024-08-03

I purchased a '94 Escort wagon with 70K miles in '98 for my high school daughter. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the car, including the loss of AC at 90K miles, which cost us around $1200 to replace. Since then, the car has had some engine troubles and has required multiple visits to the shop. Recently, at 103K miles, an $85 diagnostic revealed a dead cylinder due to a burnt valve, which requires a $1000 valve job. I decided to sell the car to a mechanic for $500. Although I kept the oil changed every 3000 miles, I suspect that my daughter may have contributed to the engine issues by driving too fast, accelerating too quickly, passing, and gunning the engine. However, I am now replacing the wagon with a '98 Escort LX sedan with only 47K miles, and this time I am getting a 5-speed. I do expect the AC to fail around 80K miles.

  5. Rasheed Kuhn 2024-06-28

Hello! I haven't owned this vehicle for very long, but it has been in my family since it was less than a year old. It has been incredibly reliable and has even survived 4 wrecks! Unfortunately, the A/C recently went out and it requires about $350 in repairs to get it fixed. Most everything in the A/C went out at the same time. While it may not be the most aesthetically pleasing car I've ever owned, the interior design could use some improvement, it has certainly served me well!

Positive 1994 Ford Escort car reviews

  1. Alexander Osinski 2024-11-28

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in August for 1200 and it's actually my first car. At first, I didn't expect much from a Ford, but it turned out to be a great purchase. All it needed was new brakes, as it sounded like a school bus coming down the street. But after that, it runs great! The 5-speed manual transmission gives good acceleration, especially for a 4-banger, except with the AC on! Thanks for listening!

  2. Ervin Schneider 2024-11-11

You'll be happy to know that this vehicle gets 28-34 mpg and has had very few mechanical problems. It also has good stability in difficult situations, making it a reliable choice. Not only is it a great car to drive, but it's also very inexpensive transportation when you consider the cost per mile, including the purchase price. Additionally, it has lots of room for hauling things around.

  3. Mervin Runolfsson 2024-09-15

I bought my 94' a year ago to drive back and forth to work. It's been a great investment, paying for itself in fuel savings. I drive 22 miles each way to work, and 80% of that is interstate. I'm thrilled to report that I'm getting an average of 37 mpg, and have even gotten as much as 40! The only downside is that when the A/C is on, the power decreases, but that's to be expected of a 4 banger.

  4. Urban Boehm 2024-09-11

I bought my 'Scort while in college a few years ago, and she paid for herself several times over - what a deal! All repairs were minor and due to regular wear and tear. I replaced the clutch once (it was the original), and other than tires that was my only big expense. She gets great gas mileage, and she's fun to drive, too. I've never known a more reliable vehicle.

  5. Ottis Bruen 2024-08-05

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that this car has taken my family all around the country with no problems, even though I never thought it was going to be a good buy.
