1997 Ford Escort problems

The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America. Produced across three generations, the first generation was a subcompact; the latter two generations were compact cars. Becoming highly successful in the marketplace, the Escort became the best-selling car in the United States after 1982, a position it would hold for much of the 1980s.

Produced across three generations, the Escort was the first world car developed by Ford, with the first-generation American Escort designed alongside Ford of Europe, who transitioned the Escort Mk III to front-wheel drive. During its production, the Escort also underwent a wide use of platform sharing and rebranding. The first generation served as the basis of the longer-wheelbase Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz, the two-seat Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 and was rebranded as the Mercury Lynx. The second generation was introduced for 1991, growing into the compact segment. Moving away from a shared design with Ford of Europe, the Escort now shared a platform with the Mazda 323 and sharing a body with the Ford Laser (a model line sold in Asia and Oceania); the Mercury Lynx was replaced by the Mercury Tracer. For 1997, the third generation served as an extensive redesign of the previous-generation sedan; the Escort ZX2 two-door was introduced, with the Mercury Tracer adopting a similar redesign.

Ford introduced the Ford Focus in North America for 2000 as its third "world car", phasing it in as the successor of the Escort. After 2000, the four-door Escort was moved primarily to fleet sales (with the coupe remaining available); production ended entirely after the 2002 model year. In contrast to the first-generation American Escort and Escort Mk III of Ford of Europe (and the Mondeo/Contour and Mercury Mystique), the Focus adopted a much larger degree of commonality between its European and North American variants, in effect, becoming the original world car Ford had originally envisioned with the Escort.

During its entire production, the Escort was produced by Wayne Stamping & Assembly in (Wayne, Michigan) and the first generation was also produced by Edison Assembly in (Edison, New Jersey), San Jose Assembly Plant in (Milpitas, California), and Oakville Assembly in (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) while the second and third generations were also produced by Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico).

Common 1997 Ford Escort problems

The 1997 Ford Escort is known to have several common problems, as reported by its owners. One of the most common issues is engine performance, with 7 complaints related to the car running roughly. This can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty ignition system, vacuum leaks, or worn-out engine components. It is crucial to diagnose the root cause of the problem to ensure a proper repair.

Another issue reported by owners is that the car idles roughly and stalls, with 6 complaints related to this problem in the 1999 Escort model. This can be caused by a variety of issues, including a dirty or faulty throttle body, vacuum leaks, or a malfunctioning idle air control valve. Again, diagnosing the root cause of the problem is crucial to ensure a proper repair.

Rust is a significant issue in the 1997 Ford Escort, as reported by What Car?. The car's rear chassis rails, rear wheel-arches, the bottom of the fuse box, and under the battery are all susceptible to rust. While this issue can be halted, the cost of a professional repair can be substantial, potentially costing as much as what the car was originally purchased for.

The engines in the 1997 Ford Escort are also prone to corrosion and blowing head gaskets if oil and coolant changes are missed. If the engines are well-maintained, they can last beyond 100,000 miles. However, the diesel engines need their timing belts changed every three years or 36,000 miles, while the petrol engines need their timing belts changed every five years or 60,000 miles.

After 50,000 miles, the shock absorbers and suspension bushes in the 1997 Ford Escort can wear, causing MoT test failure. While replacing these components is not an expensive job, the cost can add up quickly if multiple components need to be replaced.

Electrical faults are rare in the 1997 Ford Escort, but the fuse box can rot through and cause various problems. This issue can be challenging to diagnose and repair, so it is essential to seek the help of a professional if this issue arises.

The 1997 Ford Escort's transmission is also known to have issues, with 25 complaints related to this problem. Transmission problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out gears, a faulty torque converter, or low transmission fluid levels.

The HVAC system in the 1997 Ford Escort is also prone to issues, with 15 complaints related to this problem. This can be caused by various factors, including a faulty blower motor, a malfunctioning heater core, or a damaged HVAC control module.

The brakes in the 1997 Ford Escort are also known to have issues, with 8 complaints related to this problem. Brake problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out brake pads, a faulty brake booster, or a malfunctioning brake master cylinder.

In conclusion, the 1997 Ford Escort is known to have several common problems, including engine performance issues, rust, electrical faults, transmission problems, HVAC issues, and brake problems. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the car's safety and longevity. Regular maintenance, such as oil and coolant changes, can also help prevent these issues from arising in the first place.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-07
  • VIN: 3FALP15P6VR
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The rubber fuel filler neck hose that connects the metal fuel filler neck to the gas tank failed for the first time in 2013. During fueling, a large pool of gasoline leaked onto the pavement under the vehicle, presenting an environmental and fire hazard. The filler neck hose was replaced with a Ford OEM hose purchased from a local Ford dealer in Sacramento, CA. The replacement hose failed in a similar manner the original hose in less than two years time - thus requiring replacement in 2015. A genuine Ford OEM replacement was obtained from a dealer in the Sacramento area and installed. This hose failed in less than 2 years time, in 2017. Again a replacement hose was obtained from a Sacramento area Ford dealer ind installed. This hose then failed in 2019 and was replaced with another Ford dealer-obtained part... which failed in 2021 and was replaced with another Ford dealer-obtained part. The hose has failed again in less than 2 years time. It is apparent that the replacement parts that Ford has been selling through their dealers are made of a material that is not suitable for the application. Since the original part lasted 16 years, it should be possible to make a replacement part last a similar period of time. The vehicle has been a 'one family' ownership since purchased new in 1997, so the service history is well known by the present owners. The (lack of quality) of this part presents a safety and environmental hazard. Similar quality issues have been reported by other owners of the same vehicle. It is likely that other vehicle models are experiencing similar issues if the supplier of this part is also supplying other similar parts. See Ford Escort Owners Association online forum (with search feature) to read about other's experiences with these parts - here's a few: https://www.feoa.net/threads/gas-filler-neck-hose-cracking.112610/post-1076796 https://www.feoa.net/threads/fuel-hose-tank-to-filler-neck-how-long-should-it-last.105585/post-995753

Negative 1997 Ford Escort car reviews

  1. Louvenia Zieme 2024-11-26

We had a difficult experience with two Ford cars, a 97 Escort wagon, white, both of which had engine problems despite regular maintenance. While we were disappointed with our experience, we understand that every car brand has its own unique challenges. We encourage potential buyers to do their research and make an informed decision. Thank you for considering our experience.

  2. Stanley Torp 2024-10-06

The car has some minor problems. Unfortunately, it was just towed away today because it wouldn't start, even after several jump attempts. I had driven the car at 5:30, got back in the car at 6:30, and the engine wouldn't even turn. I'm feeling frustrated with Ford as this is the second Escort I've had with similar issues.

The car has been serviced regularly. The first issue I encountered was when the brakes started squeaking at 60k miles. The mechanics were surprised to find that they were the original brakes and they needed to be replaced at 60k miles. The only other problem I had was when I went over a 'v' shaped driveway with a heavier person in the passenger seat, causing a small leak in the radiator seam. The car gets 30-35 miles per gallon in town and 40 miles per gallon on road trips when not running the A/C. I recently bought a new car, but I'm still attached to this one because of its dependability. My husband is trying to convince me to sell it since we found a good deal on an Aero, but we'll see.

Let's be honest, it's an escort. If I had more money, I would drive a Benz, but unfortunately, I'm a bit of a broke loser who flips burgers. If you talk too highly of your escort, you might come across as a bit of a loser. It does the job, though. Keep working hard, and maybe you'll be able to afford a nicer car in the future.

Your car has been incredibly loyal to you! It has great gas mileage and has required very few repairs over the 6.5 years you've driven it. It's not the most stylish car, and your kids may not be too keen on being seen in it, but you know they'll be begging to drive it once they get their licenses. When I was 16, I would have done backflips to have a car like this! Of course, I won't bore you with stories of the rusty old cars I had to drive. This car is perfect for a small family with 1 or 2 kids. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done. You may experience some road noise, but just turn up the radio and enjoy the ride!

Looking for a car that's cheap, low maintenance, and good on gas? The Ford Escort ZX2 might just be the perfect fit for you! By switching to synthetic oil and transmission fluid, you can improve its performance and get off the line like a jack rabbit. Want to add some style? Consider adding a body kit to the sedan front bumper and side skirts to the ZX2. You can even paint the front bumper a chick magnet color for added flair. And if you're looking for a comfortable ride, upgrading to bigger tires can make all the difference. While it may not be a Camaro, Mustang, or Charger, the Ford Escort ZX2 can hold its own in rain and snow with its reliable front-wheel drive. Don't underestimate this little car!

We now have almost 178k miles on this little gem. A few minor repairs here and there, plus regular maintenance and WOW! She's been such a good runner for us!

I received my escort in high school and, to my delight, I still have it six years later. Dipples, my escort's name, has taken me through snow, rain, wind, and sunshine without any issues. During my college years, it brought me home to San Diego, CA and back to Tacoma and Pullman, WA several times, and I had no problems. I'm proud to say that I've enjoyed my car and I'm surprised it has performed so well. Ford did an excellent job with my car.

This car has been amazing for me! With 165,000 miles on it, all I've ever had to do is basic maintenance like brakes, tires, oil, belts, and an air filter. The automatic transmission is still the original one, and I've only had it flushed a couple of times with the filter replaced. If you take good care of these cars, they can last a very long time without any issues. I've owned several cars over the years, and most of them needed a new transmission or air conditioner service by 150,000 miles. But this car has been the exception! I'm thrilled with it as a second car. You should definitely consider getting one for yourself!

I've had my Escort LX for 5 years and I absolutely love it! It's been such a reliable car and I just paid it off. The gas mileage is excellent and it's still going strong. I'm so attached to my car that when I bought a Ford Mustang in '98, I actually took it back to the dealership to reclaim my Escort!
