The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America. Produced across three generations, the first generation was a subcompact; the latter two generations were compact cars. Becoming highly successful in the marketplace, the Escort became the best-selling car in the United States after 1982, a position it would hold for much of the 1980s.
Produced across three generations, the Escort was the first world car developed by Ford, with the first-generation American Escort designed alongside Ford of Europe, who transitioned the Escort Mk III to front-wheel drive. During its production, the Escort also underwent a wide use of platform sharing and rebranding. The first generation served as the basis of the longer-wheelbase Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz, the two-seat Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 and was rebranded as the Mercury Lynx. The second generation was introduced for 1991, growing into the compact segment. Moving away from a shared design with Ford of Europe, the Escort now shared a platform with the Mazda 323 and sharing a body with the Ford Laser (a model line sold in Asia and Oceania); the Mercury Lynx was replaced by the Mercury Tracer. For 1997, the third generation served as an extensive redesign of the previous-generation sedan; the Escort ZX2 two-door was introduced, with the Mercury Tracer adopting a similar redesign.
Ford introduced the Ford Focus in North America for 2000 as its third "world car", phasing it in as the successor of the Escort. After 2000, the four-door Escort was moved primarily to fleet sales (with the coupe remaining available); production ended entirely after the 2002 model year. In contrast to the first-generation American Escort and Escort Mk III of Ford of Europe (and the Mondeo/Contour and Mercury Mystique), the Focus adopted a much larger degree of commonality between its European and North American variants, in effect, becoming the original world car Ford had originally envisioned with the Escort.
During its entire production, the Escort was produced by Wayne Stamping & Assembly in (Wayne, Michigan) and the first generation was also produced by Edison Assembly in (Edison, New Jersey), San Jose Assembly Plant in (Milpitas, California), and Oakville Assembly in (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) while the second and third generations were also produced by Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico).

- Summary: The rubber fuel filler neck hose that connects the metal fuel filler neck to the gas tank failed for the first time in 2013. During fueling, a large pool of gasoline leaked onto the pavement under the vehicle, presenting an environmental and fire hazard. The filler neck hose was replaced with a Ford OEM hose purchased from a local Ford dealer in Sacramento, CA. The replacement hose failed in a similar manner the original hose in less than two years time - thus requiring replacement in 2015. A genuine Ford OEM replacement was obtained from a dealer in the Sacramento area and installed. This hose failed in less than 2 years time, in 2017. Again a replacement hose was obtained from a Sacramento area Ford dealer ind installed. This hose then failed in 2019 and was replaced with another Ford dealer-obtained part... which failed in 2021 and was replaced with another Ford dealer-obtained part. The hose has failed again in less than 2 years time. It is apparent that the replacement parts that Ford has been selling through their dealers are made of a material that is not suitable for the application. Since the original part lasted 16 years, it should be possible to make a replacement part last a similar period of time. The vehicle has been a 'one family' ownership since purchased new in 1997, so the service history is well known by the present owners. The (lack of quality) of this part presents a safety and environmental hazard. Similar quality issues have been reported by other owners of the same vehicle. It is likely that other vehicle models are experiencing similar issues if the supplier of this part is also supplying other similar parts. - Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM MAY NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT, WHICH MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.

I bought my EGT in early 2001 and loved every moment I owned it (up until a TAXI wrote it off, you rascal). The car is a blast to drive. If you drive it normally, you'll be happy, but if you like to have a bit of fun with your car, you'll be laughing. Trust me! The car accelerates very well for a compact, thanks to the Mazda engine, and it handles very well, thanks to the 4-wheel independent suspension. Braking is phenomenal, thanks to the 4-wheel disc brakes. All in all, if you're going to buy one, look to see if it was taken care of (oil changes, regular maintenance, and stuff like that). Take care of it if you get one, and you won't be disappointed. Trust me!

This is my 4th escort and I absolutely love it! Whenever I get out of it, people always ask me what kind of car it is because it looks so great. Even though it's an escort, people are always surprised by how stylish and reliable it is. I've put over a hundred thousand miles on each of my escorts and they've never let me down. That's why I keep coming back to them!

I love my Escort LX! It's been such a reliable car for me. I drive 80 miles per day round trip and get an impressive 33mpg in the city. The car was generously given to me by a friend back in 8-06. It sat for 9 months, but with a new battery, it started right up. I've had to replace a few parts like the starter, tires, struts, and brakes, but recently the timing belt broke. I was told it was beyond repair because the camshaft was locked and there may have been piston and valve damage. However, I didn't give up hope and managed to turn the camshaft backward and free it. After putting on a new timing belt, it runs like a champ! With gas prices rising every day (currently at 3.60), my Escort is not for sale. It's a tough little car that, with routine care, should run forever!

Despite being a reliable and fuel-efficient car with great take off, my 1999 ZX2 has been experiencing jerking issues when going slow, such as during a slow take off or stop-and-go traffic on the freeway. Despite being told by the service manager that this is normal, I have taken it in for servicing seven times. Additionally, the back seat lacks leg room and taller passengers may find their head hitting the top of the car. While the air conditioner stopped working at 35,000 miles, overall the car has been dependable. However, the jerking issue has been a major turn off, as it can feel like learning to drive a stick without being able to balance the gas and clutch. Despite this issue, I still find the car to be okay.

The car's performance is impressive, going from 0-60 in just 7.8 seconds. The fuel economy is also outstanding, with 42 mpg on flat highways at 65 and 36 mpg in aggressive city driving. Although there are some minor issues with vibration and noise, these are typical for a car of this type. The car has a spacious and comfortable back seat, making it perfect for long journeys. Overall, this car is a great investment and I highly recommend it.

Awesome to drive! I love the zipping around feeling from the little car and the manual transmission is the only way to go! Although I have noticed some wear and tear after owning it for 2 years, it still brings me joy. I do have some concerns about safety in the event of a collision, but overall it's been a great car.

We have owned this car since new, and while it has some great features, it has also become a bit of a frustration. The hatchback/wagon design is incredibly practical and the mileage, at nearly 40mpg on the highway, is fantastic. I also agree with other reviewers that the drivetrain is incredibly reliable. However, there are some downsides to this car. The interior noise level is quite high, the power is lacking, the brakes are weak, and the seats are uncomfortable, making it difficult to drive for long periods of time. Additionally, the quality of assembly could be improved, as we have experienced issues with doors not fitting properly and faulty wiring from the start.

I've had this car for about a year now and unfortunately, I've had to replace the bushings, alternator, and battery. I also need a front end alignment and new tie-rods. It shakes quite a bit when idle and the steering wheel clicks when I turn it for some reason. Additionally, the tires run out of air every two weeks. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone.
