1991 Ford Escort problems

The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America. Produced across three generations, the first generation was a subcompact; the latter two generations were compact cars. Becoming highly successful in the marketplace, the Escort became the best-selling car in the United States after 1982, a position it would hold for much of the 1980s.

Produced across three generations, the Escort was the first world car developed by Ford, with the first-generation American Escort designed alongside Ford of Europe, who transitioned the Escort Mk III to front-wheel drive. During its production, the Escort also underwent a wide use of platform sharing and rebranding. The first generation served as the basis of the longer-wheelbase Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz, the two-seat Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 and was rebranded as the Mercury Lynx. The second generation was introduced for 1991, growing into the compact segment. Moving away from a shared design with Ford of Europe, the Escort now shared a platform with the Mazda 323 and sharing a body with the Ford Laser (a model line sold in Asia and Oceania); the Mercury Lynx was replaced by the Mercury Tracer. For 1997, the third generation served as an extensive redesign of the previous-generation sedan; the Escort ZX2 two-door was introduced, with the Mercury Tracer adopting a similar redesign.

Ford introduced the Ford Focus in North America for 2000 as its third "world car", phasing it in as the successor of the Escort. After 2000, the four-door Escort was moved primarily to fleet sales (with the coupe remaining available); production ended entirely after the 2002 model year. In contrast to the first-generation American Escort and Escort Mk III of Ford of Europe (and the Mondeo/Contour and Mercury Mystique), the Focus adopted a much larger degree of commonality between its European and North American variants, in effect, becoming the original world car Ford had originally envisioned with the Escort.

During its entire production, the Escort was produced by Wayne Stamping & Assembly in (Wayne, Michigan) and the first generation was also produced by Edison Assembly in (Edison, New Jersey), San Jose Assembly Plant in (Milpitas, California), and Oakville Assembly in (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) while the second and third generations were also produced by Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico).

The Ford Escort, produced from 1981 to 2003, has been a popular choice for those seeking an affordable and reliable vehicle. However, like any car, the 1991 Ford Escort has its fair share of common problems.

  • Battery Drainage: Another common problem reported by Ford Escort owners is battery drainage. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty alternator, a damaged battery, or a problem with the car's electrical system. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check the battery and alternator for signs of damage, and to check the car's electrical system for any signs of issues.
  • No Start, No Power: Some Ford Escort owners have reported experiencing issues with the engine not starting or the car having no power. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty ignition switch, a damaged battery, or a problem with the car's electrical system. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check the battery and ignition switch for signs of damage, and to check the car's electrical system for any signs of issues.
  • Engine Problems: Ford Escort owners have also reported experiencing issues with the engine, including the engine not running after work has been done on the chassis and the engine not idling properly. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check the fuel system, including the fuel pump and fuel filter, for any signs of issues. It is also recommended to check the ignition system, including the spark plugs and ignition coil, for any signs of issues.
  • Rear Window Defroster Wiring: Some Ford Escort owners have reported experiencing issues with the rear window defroster wiring. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check the wiring for any signs of damage or wear, and to check the fuse box for any signs of issues.
  • Fuel System Problems: Ford Escort owners have also reported experiencing issues with the fuel system, including the car not starting due to water in the fuel filter and the car stalling due to a faulty fuel pump. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check the fuel filter and fuel pump for any signs of issues, and to check the fuel system for any signs of leaks or damage.
  • Immobilizer Issues: Some Ford Escort owners have reported experiencing issues with the immobilizer system, including the car not starting due to a faulty immobilizer. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check the fuse box for any signs of issues, and to check the car's electrical system for any signs of issues.
  • Distributor Gear Wear: Some Ford Escort owners have reported experiencing issues with the distributor gear wearing out, which can cause the car to stall or not start. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check the distributor gear for any signs of wear, and to replace it if necessary.
  • Soft or Dry Rotting Rubber Parts and Hoses: Ford Escort owners have also reported experiencing issues with soft or dry rotting rubber parts and hoses, which can cause leaks and other issues. To diagnose this problem, it is recommended to check all rubber parts and hoses for any signs of wear or damage, and to replace them if necessary.

In conclusion, the 1991 Ford Escort is a reliable and affordable vehicle, but like any car, it has its fair share of common problems. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, damage, and issues with the car's electrical system. To diagnose and resolve these problems, it is recommended to check the car's various systems and components for any signs of issues, and to replace any parts or components that are damaged or not functioning properly.

Negative 1991 Ford Escort car reviews

  1. Terrell Veum 2024-10-14

This is the only car that sold itself to me! The salesman didn't have to do anything. After the air conditioner was fixed in only one year, the next big problem was the air flow meter not reading right, causing the engine to go lean and sputter once the engine warmed up. It was fixed under warranty just before it expired. At about '99, the tiny coolant lines that run to the air intake (these set idle speed fast when coolant is cold) busted and my coolant boiled out (see improvement suggestion). It may wear on you cruising the interstate for hours, as the suspension is a bit stiff. But for anything shorter, it rides just fine and is good at handling curves.

Hi there! I'm actually the second owner of this car. My aunt was the first owner and she took excellent care of it. When I turned 16, she passed it down to me. At first, everything was great, but unfortunately, we've had to replace the alternator three times now and it looks like we'll have to do it again soon. The alternator has been draining the battery, so we've had to replace that a few times as well. Other than that, I haven't had any major issues with the car.

  3. Jovanny Purdy 2024-03-12

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I recently purchased a Ford Escort in great condition for a really good price. This is actually the 4th Escort that my family has owned, and we absolutely love them. They're fantastic on gas and the parts are affordable. In our experience, these cars are extremely reliable. I've heard some people complain about them, but I think it's often because they don't take proper care of the car. Of course, that can happen with any vehicle. Thanks for listening!

  4. Alex Kreiger 2024-01-01

Your Ford Escort Pony is a reliable car that has never let you down when you needed it. Although there have been some issues with malfunctioning automatic seatbelts, failing gas and unreliable temperature gauges, the car still operates fine and is a fun car to drive. The 5-speed transmission is great, but the clutch could be improved.

Positive 1991 Ford Escort car reviews

  1. Bernie Cruickshank 2024-11-08

This car has been through thick and thin with me. Never had a major problem. It is pushing 200,000 miles and I plan to keep it until it dies!

  2. Benjamin Berge 2024-11-02

I had the pleasure of driving this car on the German Autobahn for several years. Despite my foot being pressed so hard to the floorboards that I would get leg cramps (I know, it's funny), I managed to reach a top speed of maybe 140 going downhill. Although the big Granddaddy 5 series Mercedes and 7 series Bimmers would pass me so fast that they would suck me out into their lane, the Escort was still a lot of fun. It only took me 7 hours to get to Italy and 4 1/2 hours to Amsterdam. Ahhhh, the good life!

  3. Kim Hoeger 2024-10-11

I haven't had any issues with the car so far. I've only done the usual maintenance that you would with a used car. Recently, I drove from Virginia to Connecticut by myself for the first time and I wasn't afraid at all about driving that distance alone. It was the farthest I've ever driven, but I made it there and back with ease. I have more confidence in this car than any other car I've owned in the past (and there have been many). I plan on keeping this car for a very long time.

  4. Eusebio Nader 2024-09-21

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in '95 and it's been such a reliable vehicle. I've only had to replace the tires and it's still going strong with 198,000 miles on it! I'm having a bit of trouble with some rust and holes in the hatch, which is causing some exhaust gas to come into the cabin, but overall it's been a great car. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my car with you. I acquired it back in '99 and have been driving it an average of 25,000 miles per year. It's amazing to think that by the end of '03, it will have 200,000 miles on it! The best part is that it's all original, except for the air filter, belts, and water pump. I've thought about replacing some of the other parts, like the plugs, wires, and sensors, but it's still running great and getting an average of 35 mpg (and 40.8 on trips). Can you believe it? This car mostly sees highway miles, but I do take it to the local drag strip every once in a while. Thanks for listening!
