Common 1994 Mazda 929 problems
The Mazda 929 from 1994 is known for several common problems, primarily related to its suspension, heater core, powertrain control module, spark plugs, power steering system, fuel pressure, and window regulators.
- Knocking from Suspension on Rough Roads: One of the most common problems reported by Mazda 929 owners is a knocking sound from the suspension when driving on rough roads. This issue is typically caused by worn or loose sway bar links, which may need to be replaced to resolve the problem.
- Heater Core Replacement: Another common issue with the Mazda 929 is a faulty heater core, which can cause problems with the heating and cooling system. Replacing the heater core is a complex and expensive repair, with an estimated cost of $1,646 to $1,816.
- Powertrain Control Module Replacement: The powertrain control module (PCM) is responsible for controlling various aspects of the engine and transmission. If the PCM fails, it may need to be replaced, with an estimated cost of $1,385 to $1,394.
- Spark Plug Replacement: The Mazda 929's spark plugs may need to be replaced periodically to maintain optimal engine performance. The estimated cost of this repair is $111 to $165.
- Power Steering System Leak Inspection: If the power steering system is leaking, it may need to be inspected and repaired. The estimated cost of this repair is $44 to $56.
- Fuel Pressure Test: If the fuel pressure is too low or too high, it may cause problems with engine performance. A fuel pressure test can help diagnose this issue, with an estimated cost of $44 to $56.
- AC Diagnosis: If the air conditioning system is not working properly, it may need to be diagnosed and repaired. The estimated cost of this repair is $88 to $111.
- Noise Diagnosis: If the Mazda 929 is making unusual noises, it may need to be diagnosed and repaired. The estimated cost of this repair is $88 to $111.
- Window Regulator Motor Replacement: If the window regulator motor fails, it may need to be replaced. The estimated cost of this repair is $355 to $466.
- Window Regulator Replacement: If the window regulator itself fails, it may need to be replaced. The estimated cost of this repair is $340 to $770.
- Alternator Voltage Regulator Replacement: If the alternator voltage regulator fails, it may need to be replaced. The estimated cost of this repair is $451 to $502.
In addition to these common problems, the Mazda 929 is known for having logistical problems related to its sales and maintenance. Mazda had trouble supporting all of the new models it had created for expansion, and its American dealers weren't necessarily prepared to sell them. This led to problems with sales and maintenance, particularly for luxury buyers.
The Mazda 929 also has a recall for a problem with the ignition switch, which can cause a short-circuit and potentially lead to a fire. This recall affects the Mazda 929 from 1993 and 1994, as well as several other Mazda models from the same time period.
In summary, the Mazda 929 from 1994 is known for several common problems related to its suspension, heater core, powertrain control module, spark plugs, power steering system, fuel pressure, and window regulators. The car also has logistical problems related to its sales and maintenance, and a recall for a problem with the ignition switch.

What a great car! The only downside is the limited interior space and the lack of a glove compartment, which has been mentioned before. I really wish they would make it again. I bought it used with only sixty thousand miles on it and the only issue I had was with the sunroof being a bit balky.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 1997 with 70k on it, and it's been pretty much trouble-free since then, even with an additional 60k on it now. One thing I really appreciate is that the design still looks great even after 11 years! I usually get around 18-20mpg, mostly from in-city driving. As long as I give it a regular oil-change with 5w30 and pay attention to the automatic transmission fluid, I feel like it could easily last another 40k. Thanks for listening!

My 929 was amazing! It was a gift from my parents on my 17th birthday and I just passed it down to my sister when I went off to college. I like to describe my car as versatile and reliable. I've taken it off road, through water, and even on sidewalks! I would love to buy this car brand new if they still made it.

I love it! Your Mazda has so many features for a '92 model. It's amazing that you're the original owner and it still runs exceptionally well with 156k miles on it. It's great to hear that you haven't had any major repairs. I agree that it's one of the best-looking cars to come out of Japan. I definitely recommend it!

This vehicle has been free of any mechanical problems since I have owned it.

I can see that you've been on the hunt for a 929 for quite some time, and I'm glad to hear that you finally found one that you're happy with! From what you've described, it sounds like the car is incredibly comfortable and spacious, making it a great choice for long drives. It's worth noting that some parts have been replaced after 100kmi, but that's not uncommon for a car of this age. I understand that the accelerator can be a bit too sensitive, but I hope that doesn't detract too much from your overall enjoyment of the car. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!
