1993 Ford Aerostar problems

ford logo

The Ford Aerostar is a range of vans that was manufactured by Ford from the 1986 to the 1997 model years. The first minivan produced by Ford, the model line was marketed against the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari and the first two generations of the Chrysler minivans. Introduced shortly before the Ford Taurus, the Aerostar derived its name from its slope-nosed "one-box" exterior (although over six feet tall, the body of the Aerostar retained a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, besting the Lincoln Mark VII).

The first minivan powered exclusively by V6 engines, the Aerostar was also one of the first vehicles to introduce all-wheel drive to the segment in North America. The model line was sold in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo vans, along with an extended-length body. Sold primarily in the United States and Canada, a limited number of vehicles were exported outside of North America.

The Aerostar was replaced for the 1995 model year by the front-wheel drive Ford Windstar; Ford sold both model lines concurrently through the 1997 model year. The role of the Aerostar cargo van was left unfilled, with the Ford Transit Connect serving as the closest successor (in terms of size and capability).

For its entire production, the model line was assembled by the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. In total, 2,029,577 vehicles were produced across a single generation.

Negative 1993 Ford Aerostar car reviews

  1. Reid Cummerata 2025-01-08

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this vehicle that I purchased for my courier service. Over the past 2 months, I've put 10k miles on it. While I did encounter some issues with the transmission, I still believe that these minivans are a great purchase if you're looking for something affordable and easy to maintain. However, it's important to keep an eye out for body rust (especially along the seams on the roof), electrical problems (power windows and locks), and transmission noises/leaks. Additionally, the front brakes tend to wear out quickly since they do all the braking, but the braking itself is good. Lastly, if you're considering the AWD (also known as E4WD) version, keep in mind that it can be expensive to fix. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Kameron Kub 2024-09-29

This van is amazing! It's a true workhorse. If Ford didn't make it look like a delivery truck, I would definitely buy another one. The space is great, especially with the seats removed. I was able to move almost my entire house (except for the big stuff) with loads in the van. I've only had to do routine maintenance like replacing the thermostat, and it's been running smoothly ever since.

  3. Timothy Champlin 2024-07-24

Your van has an impressive 271,000 miles on it and it's still driving well! It's an extremely reliable vehicle that has only required minor repairs. While the design may not be the most exciting, it's very practical with lots of storage space. Additionally, the gas mileage is very good, especially considering its boxy shape.

Positive 1993 Ford Aerostar car reviews

  1. Guy Morissette 2024-11-28

You'll love this vehicle - it's a 4x4 that can blast through anything and has plenty of cargo capacity. Whatever you need to take home, this Ford can handle it. Thanks for considering it!

  2. Turner Hartmann 2024-10-14

Excellent Reliability!! Other than the normal brakes, some front end parts, muffler, the van is so reliable its scary. Maybe that's why Ford stopped making it. You'll be happy to know that we have no garage, live in New England, and the body is excellent with no rust out anywhere. It has gone through the kids' hockey, scouts, loads of cheerleaders, and is now being used for college moves with no problems!!

  3. Emerald Weber 2024-08-29

I used to think that vans were only for elderly people, but my opinion changed when I bought one. I absolutely love it! Now, I can take my whole family places without worrying about who will ride where. We've been to Texas, Mexico, and several trips to the beach. We live in the Piedmont of N.C. and it had 92000 miles on it when we bought it. A former Oakland Raiders player had it, but now the Pittsburgh Steelers tag shines on the front and back (I'm just a fan). I would definitely buy another one just like it. I love the color inside and out. Yeah, I'm a 38-year-old nana, but I look great in my Eddie Bauer edition.

  4. Gage Runolfsdottir 2024-08-23

I recently purchased an Aerostar XL 4.0 with front and rear AC. Despite the fact that it had 125,000 miles on it, it was still in great condition. The driver and passengers have plenty of foot room, and the rear and middle bench seats can be removed quickly to make room for cargo. Changing the battery, headlights, tail light bulbs, and air/oil/trans/fuel filters is a breeze. The filler neck for fuel is conveniently located beside the driver's door, which adds an extra layer of security. The vehicle gets an impressive 23mpg at a sustained 70mph and 16mpg in stop-and-go city traffic. The acceleration is excellent at all speeds, and the load capacity is outstanding. There are a few minor points of irritation, such as the alternator being located right below the oil filler neck, which requires some extra care to avoid drips. Additionally, changing the driver side headlight bulb requires tools and time. Lastly, there is an issue with the ignition switch that needs to be addressed. Overall, I highly recommend the Aerostar XL 4.0 for anyone in need of a reliable and spacious vehicle.

  5. Jay Rowe 2024-08-22

Superior family/dog/supply moving vehicle. With high seating and a real frame around the van, this vehicle provides real peace of mind. Despite the subpar starters that were supplied with this van, the rest of the equipment does the job in comfort. The AWD feature makes this van unstoppable even on the worst days. God bless Ford.
