1994 Ford Aerostar problems
The Ford Aerostar is a range of vans that was manufactured by Ford from the 1986 to the 1997 model years. The first minivan produced by Ford, the model line was marketed against the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari and the first two generations of the Chrysler minivans. Introduced shortly before the Ford Taurus, the Aerostar derived its name from its slope-nosed "one-box" exterior (although over six feet tall, the body of the Aerostar retained a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, besting the Lincoln Mark VII).
The first minivan powered exclusively by V6 engines, the Aerostar was also one of the first vehicles to introduce all-wheel drive to the segment in North America. The model line was sold in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo vans, along with an extended-length body. Sold primarily in the United States and Canada, a limited number of vehicles were exported outside of North America.
The Aerostar was replaced for the 1995 model year by the front-wheel drive Ford Windstar; Ford sold both model lines concurrently through the 1997 model year. The role of the Aerostar cargo van was left unfilled, with the Ford Transit Connect serving as the closest successor (in terms of size and capability).
For its entire production, the model line was assembled by the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. In total, 2,029,577 vehicles were produced across a single generation.

Runs fantastic! It's great to work on. It could use wide angle rear view mirrors. The sound system is excellent. It would be nice to have more control of all the interior lights. Overall, it's a great cargo van with seats out.
-
Bought new, 148000 miles later and still going like new! I've replaced the starter and kept up with usual maintenance. I started using synthetic oil at 100000 miles and it stopped pinging and boosted power. I absolutely love the driver seating and get 23MPG. It's such a shame that Ford stopped making them.
-
I recently purchased an Aerostar XL 4.0 with front and rear AC. Despite the fact that it had 125,000 miles on it, it was still in great condition. The driver and passengers have plenty of foot room, and the rear and middle bench seats can be removed quickly to make room for cargo. Changing the battery, headlights, tail light bulbs, and air/oil/trans/fuel filters is a breeze. The filler neck for fuel is located beside the driver's door, which is an excellent location for security. The vehicle gets 23mpg at a sustained 70mph and 16mpg in stop-and-go city traffic. The acceleration is excellent at all speeds, and the load capacity is impressive. There are a few minor points of irritation, such as the alternator being located right below the oil filler neck, which requires guarding against drips. Additionally, changing the driver side headlight bulb requires tools, time, and care. Lastly, there is an issue with the ignition switch.

I work with this van every day for about 10 hours, and I am really happy with its handling and comfort. I put over 50,000 miles on it in 3 months, and the only thing I had to change were the shock absorbers, which were the original. It's great for saving money!

In 1998, we purchased the short 3 liter version of the 1994 Ford Aerostar after my brother-in-law had used it as a company vehicle and had put about 169,000 miles on it. At the time, we had three children under four years old, with the fourth child on the way. Since we live overseas, we only use it during the 6-8 weeks we are in the states for the summer school break. We've used it every summer since 1998, except for one summer when we were moving and another summer due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. On average, we put about 3,000 miles on it each summer. In 2000, we had a bit of a rough summer of traveling. We set out on an 800-mile round trip, but before the trip, we had to take it to the shop because it wouldn't start. They replaced an electrical component, and we continued on our trip. Unfortunately, during our trip, it broke down about every 100 miles. Each time, we had to call a tow truck and spend the night somewhere while they fixed it. We took it to a Ford dealership each time, and they replaced some electrical component. When we were on the return leg of the trip, the van stopped again, and my wife was fed up with it. She decided to rent a car and take the children home while I stayed behind and got the van repaired. While visiting my mother, she talked to a dealership mechanic who came into her shop, and he suggested that we go to an alley mechanic he knew. Up to this point, we had spent $1250 on repairs at Ford dealerships. The alley mechanic looked at it for about 45 minutes and diagnosed the problem as a seizing fuel pump, which he replaced for about $250. After having the problem with the fuel pump seizing, I learned about Sea Foam fuel additive, and for many years, I've added one can to the fuel tank on the last fill-up of the summer. I also change the oil right before parking it for the school year. The van usually starts right up after sitting for 10 months each year. For many years after our troubled summer, we never had any serious issues with the van, except for the occasional battery replacement. In 2003, we took a long trip from Michigan's UP to Pennsylvania and were pleased to average about 25 mpg on the highways at 70 mph. On average, we got about 20 miles per gallon on the highway and about 15 in town. One year, I listened to someone who suggested I get the transmission filter and transmission fluid changed. I went ahead and had it done, but unfortunately, the following summer, my transmission blew while we were traveling about 200 miles from our home. We took it to a transmission shop, and the transmission was replaced for about $2000. Since then, it has been working great, and I have enjoyed using it for hauling things, as I can easily pull out and replace the rear and middle bench seats. Recently, it hasn't been getting the gas mileage it once obtained, so I imagine I need to take it in and have it tuned up to optimize its performance. We'll see how it runs this coming summer, a few weeks from now. Over the past couple of years, I have come out from stores a couple of times to find a few people looking at my van. One boy, about nine years old, with his dad talked about it with me with interest and admiration at its age and condition. The wife of a married couple in their late 30s or early 40s recounted her fond memories of traveling in her family's blue Aerostar 4.0-liter van to Alaska. When my children became teens, they didn't like that we didn't have a newer van and complained about the bench seats. We rented a much newer Dodge Grand Caravan one summer while in California and didn't get much better mileage with it, so I am still pleased with my old Aerostar, and family members still marvel that it is still going when we show up during the summer. It's been a great van for us, and I am proud of our old Ford!

This van has been with us for 5 years and has been a great companion. We've travelled from coast to coast with no major issues and all the kids fit comfortably without any fights. It's incredibly spacious and can haul anything once the seats are removed. We even did a complete move with just this van! The van is built solidly and even survived a hit from a deer with no serious damage. Although we've had a few odd electrical problems, this is normal for Ford, and other than that, we've only had to deal with routine maintenance issues. Even after 210,000 miles, the old girl still runs fine and the AC is still cold. Overall, we've had a great experience with this van and highly recommend it!

My uncle bought this car to drive to work and carry his restaurant supplies. He's a calm guy and never drives faster than 60 mph. However, the car is falling apart. The lights no longer work, the gauges give out false readings, and practically all the electrical components are defective. Even driving it slowly causes the whole cabin to shake and rattle on the freeway. The only thing I like about it is the comfortable front row seats. Unfortunately, the rest of the car is of poor quality, including the engine. I will never buy a Ford again, but they might make good trucks, just not vans or cars.

I purchased this Aerostar when it had 22,000 miles on it. It has been a reliable vehicle and has never left me stranded on the side of the road, unlike my Escort. Although, there were some scary moments, such as when the throttle control was dying and the vehicle was doing the herky-jerky on the interstate at 70mph! As with all Fords, the electrical components can be unreliable. The gauges cannot be trusted, dash lights flicker, and idiot lights light up whenever they feel like it. However, the engine is incredibly strong and will last for another 100k. The transmission is also problem-free. The vehicle has a massive storage capacity and can haul anything. It also has decent mileage, 18/24! The rear brakes never worked, so all braking is done in the front.
