The Chrysler Pacifica is a minivan produced by the Chrysler division of Stellantis. It is unrelated to the discontinued crossover and concept vehicles by the same name and replaced the Chrysler Town & Country for the 2017 model year. It is positioned as the higher-end Chrysler minivan, above the Dodge Grand Caravan until 2020 and above the Chrysler Voyager (rebadged as the Chrysler Grand Caravan in Canada) since 2020.

The minivan is produced with two powertrains, a 3.6 L gasoline-powered engine and a plug-in hybrid. The plug-in hybrid version has a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery that can propel the car up to 33 mi (53 km) on electric power alone. The gasoline-only version of the Pacifica minivan went on sale in mid-2016, while the plug-in hybrid version became available in early 2017.

History

Development

In June 2013, it was reported that Chrysler was preparing to produce a new generation of its Town & Country minivan at the Windsor Assembly Plant, with production set to begin in 2015 and a release for the 2017 model year. An industry analyst reported that the new version would possibly be a crossover utility vehicle in the vein of the Pacifica.

In 2015, FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that it would invest $2 billion in developing a new minivan, and overhauling the Windsor Assembly Plant to facilitate its production. A company issued plan of future vehicles revealed that a new Town & Country would begin production in February 2016 for the 2017 model year, and that the final-generation Dodge Grand Caravan would be maintained in parallel with the new Town & Country as a lower-cost option during the 2017 model year, after which it will be discontinued. Marchionne has been against "duplicate investments" in product development—a strategy reflected by his reduction of badge-engineering between FCA US's domestic marques.

On November 3, 2015, FCA filed to have its trademark registration on the Pacifica brand renewed; FCA's Head of Passenger Car Brands Timothy Kuniskis denied that this was related to any new products and that it was standard industry practice to continue renewing its trademarks because "you don't want to lose names. Establishing new names is expensive."

Common 2021 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid problems

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, introduced in 2017, has faced several significant recalls and issues that have affected its reliability and safety. One major problem is related to the battery management system, which could lead to overcharging and overheating of the battery cells. This issue has been attributed to corrosion affecting the rear isolator posts of the 12-bolt battery in the 2022 recall, which includes 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans manufactured between August 12, 2016, and August 7, 2018.

Another problem affecting the 2017-2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vehicles is a defective wiring connector inside the vehicle's transmission. This issue can cause the vehicle to stall out or the engine to shut off, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. The transmission wiring connector can short-circuit, and Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has not yet provided a date for the recall repair.

The 2023 recall also includes a power inverter software update and a potential update to the software of the battery pack control module. However, the specific details of the software updates have not been disclosed.

In addition to these problems, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has also experienced issues with its steering, transmission, and suspension. Some owners have reported the need to replace the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which can start to run jerky and dry before finally breaking down. The Pacifica is also not immune to electronic glitches, including problems with the sliding doors, which can open or close unexpectedly.

The recalls and issues affecting the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid have been a source of frustration for many owners, who have reported experiencing problems with their vehicles shortly after purchase. Some owners have reported the need for major repairs after only a few hundred miles of driving, and others have reported issues with the vehicle's software that make it inoperable. The 2021 model, in particular, has faced criticism for its reliability, with some owners reporting problems with the vehicle's transmission dial and random start-up issues.

In summary, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has faced several significant recalls and issues that have affected its reliability and safety. These problems include issues with the battery management system, transmission wiring connector, steering, transmission, and suspension, as well as electronic glitches. The 2021 model, in particular, has faced criticism for its reliability, with some owners reporting major repairs after only a few hundred miles of driving.
