The Ford Aerostar is a range of vans that was manufactured by Ford from the 1986 to the 1997 model years. The first minivan produced by Ford, the model line was marketed against the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari and the first two generations of the Chrysler minivans. Introduced shortly before the Ford Taurus, the Aerostar derived its name from its slope-nosed "one-box" exterior (although over six feet tall, the body of the Aerostar retained a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, besting the Lincoln Mark VII).

The first minivan powered exclusively by V6 engines, the Aerostar was also one of the first vehicles to introduce all-wheel drive to the segment in North America. The model line was sold in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo vans, along with an extended-length body. Sold primarily in the United States and Canada, a limited number of vehicles were exported outside of North America.

The Aerostar was replaced for the 1995 model year by the front-wheel drive Ford Windstar; Ford sold both model lines concurrently through the 1997 model year. The role of the Aerostar cargo van was left unfilled, with the Ford Transit Connect serving as the closest successor (in terms of size and capability).

For its entire production, the model line was assembled by the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. In total, 2,029,577 vehicles were produced across a single generation.

    Vehicle year: 1992

    This beast now has 185,000 miles, but don't let that fool you! The only issue I've had is an engine knock that gets better as the engine warms up (been knocking for a long time), and a wicked vibration under acceleration. It does leak a little oil, but you know what? You can drive it anywhere! The AWD is fantastic; it gets better traction than my Grand Cherokee. If the body would last as long as the engine, I would keep it forever.

    Hi there! I've had the van for a month and a half now. I've driven them before and really enjoyed the mix of workhorse with MPV tasks. Unfortunately, this one seems to be a bit of a lemon. I've had to replace the power steering, brake lines, emergency brake, clutch and pilot bearing (it's a 5 speed standard tranny), ignition lock and turn signal stalk. I'm feeling a bit unsure about whether to keep it or not.

Despite my poor maintenance habits, it has traveled over 100000 miles without any major complaints. The only issue I've had is with the left turn signal, which works intermittently.     Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned some issues with the Windstar, but have you considered the Aerostar? It's a great option that's cheap to buy, insure, and repair. I personally owned a '93 and a '97, both of which were extended, rear-wheel drive with a 4.0 litre engine, and I found them to be excellent tow vehicles. I did have to replace the exhaust flex pipes frequently on my '97, but overall I had a great experience with both vehicles. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    In 90,000 miles over 9 years, I had to fix the air conditioning three times (very expensive!). The ignition lock, power steering pump, and brakes also needed repairs. Additionally, the power windows would not lower the windows fully without me pushing down on the glass, and the sliding door would occasionally jam in the open position. I finally donated the van to charity because it was cheaper than fixing the A/C one more time!

    Hey there! I wanted to share with you my experience with this van. I actually got it brand new when I was just 16 years old, and let me tell you, it has endured 8 years of young/teenage driving! Despite all that, the only thing that's starting to go is the transmission. Overall, it's held up really well and I think it still has another 100,000 miles left in it. I will say that it does feel a bit top-heavy, but that's probably because it's the tallest mini-van around. It can also be a bit tricky to drive in high winds. However, the seats are higher than most, making it the most comfortable mini-van I've been in. Thanks for listening to my story!

The 4.0 liter engine still runs strong, giving me about 20 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg in the city. I've only had to replace two oxygen sensors and a radiator, which only cost me $600 in total.     I just bought this van used, of course, for 1300 CDN. I'm really impressed with the condition and how well the previous owner looked after it. There are only two things I don't like: it's a bit of a gas guzzler and doesn't have a lot of take-off power. But overall, it's a great van that's perfect for both work and leisure. Ford really did a great job with this model.

    This van has been a reliable companion for all our hauling needs, and we have not experienced any mechanical issues despite concerns about the automatic transmission. We chose the Aerostar for its 4WD capability and sturdy truck chassis. While towing our 22' sailboat or horse trailer (we only tow one horse due to the engine's capacity), the AC occasionally cuts off on steep hills, but we find this acceptable at high altitudes of 5-9,000 feet. With a car full of kids, I appreciate the dependability and peace of mind that comes with knowing my Aerostar will safely and reliably get us to our destination.
