1997 Ford Aerostar problems

ford logo

The Ford Aerostar is a range of vans that was manufactured by Ford from the 1986 to the 1997 model years. The first minivan produced by Ford, the model line was marketed against the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari and the first two generations of the Chrysler minivans. Introduced shortly before the Ford Taurus, the Aerostar derived its name from its slope-nosed "one-box" exterior (although over six feet tall, the body of the Aerostar retained a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, besting the Lincoln Mark VII).

The first minivan powered exclusively by V6 engines, the Aerostar was also one of the first vehicles to introduce all-wheel drive to the segment in North America. The model line was sold in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo vans, along with an extended-length body. Sold primarily in the United States and Canada, a limited number of vehicles were exported outside of North America.

The Aerostar was replaced for the 1995 model year by the front-wheel drive Ford Windstar; Ford sold both model lines concurrently through the 1997 model year. The role of the Aerostar cargo van was left unfilled, with the Ford Transit Connect serving as the closest successor (in terms of size and capability).

For its entire production, the model line was assembled by the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. In total, 2,029,577 vehicles were produced across a single generation.

Common 1997 Ford Aerostar problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Ford Aerostar 1997, several common problems have been reported:

  • Rear ABS Light Issues: Another common problem involves the rear ABS light intermittently turning on in the 1997 Aerostar. This issue has been linked to potential corrosion in the shuttle valve switch port, affecting the detection of leaks in the front or rear brakes. The ABS light coming on without the brake light has puzzled mechanics, leading to difficulties in diagnosing the exact cause.
  • Engine Problems: Engine issues have also been reported by Aerostar owners, including stalling, starting problems, and other related concerns. These complaints highlight potential reliability issues with the engine system in the 1997 Ford Aerostar.
  • Brake System Concerns: Complaints have been made about the brakes in the Aerostar, with issues related to brake lights, wheel cylinders, and the functionality of the rear brakes. These problems have raised questions about the effectiveness and reliability of the braking system in the 1997 Aerostar.
  • Electrical System Troubles: Some owners have faced electrical system problems in the Aerostar, indicating issues beyond just the mechanical components of the vehicle. These complaints suggest potential complexities in the electrical system that may require attention and maintenance.
  • Fuel System Challenges: Complaints have been made regarding the fuel system in the Aerostar, highlighting concerns about fuel delivery, efficiency, or other related issues. These problems can impact the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle.

These common problems reported by owners of the Ford Aerostar 1997 indicate a range of issues affecting different systems of the vehicle. Addressing these issues promptly and with proper maintenance can help ensure the longevity and performance of the Aerostar.

SINCE I AM HANDICAPPED AND USE AN ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR IF A TIRE BLOWS OUT I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET OUT USING THE RAMP LIFT THAT WAS INSTALLED AND THE SAME APPLIES TO THE ENGINE. HOW DO I KNOW IF THE ENGINE HAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT IF THE LIGHT IS ON ALL THE TIME? *TR

Negative 1997 Ford Aerostar car reviews

  1. Junior Crooks 2024-08-17

Bought used with 153k miles. Lost intake manifold second day($650). Since then, it has been a reliable vehicle with normal wear and tear repairs. It is very comfortable and roomy, and performs terrifically in the snow. I will definitely miss it when it finally dies. In my experience, GM products ASTRO/SAFARI are not as good.

  2. Niko Brown 2024-06-26

I purchased my Aerostar used. It's been to Cleveland and back about four times, all non-stop driving at about 70 mph, only stopping for gas. Despite the dings and scratches on the body, there is no rust. I absolutely love this little van, and even the mechanics I take it to have expressed interest in buying it from me. However, I could never part with it. It has its little quirks, but what auto doesn't?

  3. Joan Hansen 2024-06-12

Bought used with 153,000 miles. Have had good luck with it so far. Although I did have to repair a blown intake manifold gasket which cost me $650, it has been a reliable vehicle. I have had to deal with the typical nickel and dime expenses that come with American made vehicles. The fuel economy is not great, but the 4-wheel drive is fantastic and it can haul a ton of stuff and tow over 2 tons without any issues. Overall, it's not a bad vehicle. However, the new minivans on the market have almost as much room and towing capacity with better fuel economy.

  4. Kole Lehner 2024-06-08

Hi there! We bought our 1996 Aerostar XLT brand new and have put 93,000 miles on it. I absolutely love the elevated rear passenger seats, the great air conditioning, and the spacious interior. However, I did notice that there's no place on the outside of the van to set your coffee cup while you look for your keys. Additionally, I've had a few too many drinks spill in the poorly designed front seat beverage holders. Looking back, I wish I had waited until 1997 to make my purchase. The last remaining 1997 models sold for only $12,500 in Fresno, CA, which is a significant difference from the $21,000 I paid for my 1996 model. By the way, for those of you who are wondering, it's actually quite easy to have the inside door panels repaired so they don't begin to partially drop off.

  5. Enrique West 2024-05-12

Hi there! I've been the second owner of this great basic van for almost six years now. Can you believe that the A/C still works and it has the original exhaust (except for the flex pipe) after 10 years and 106000 miles? I recently replaced the rear springs that broke and installed four new shocks, and now it rides so nice. I also replaced the outer tie rod ends and the upper ball joint on the passenger side, but that's it. It's amazing to still see so many of these vans on the road. Oh, and I replaced the original battery just a year ago. The van has no rust and runs great. Thanks for reading!

Positive 1997 Ford Aerostar car reviews

  1. Dylan Abbott 2025-01-09

This is a fantastic blend of comfort and utility. As someone who is 6' tall, I really appreciate the easy access and abundant headroom. The front driver's seat has great lumbar support and provides a nice view of the road. In the rear, the 2nd set of Captain's Chairs has 6.5' behind them, making it easy to shop or travel. The van comes equipped with front and rear A/C & Heat, and a nice stereo. I purchased this van used with 106K miles, and it is now approaching 120k. While it can be a bit noisy on the road compared to modern cars, this van with the 4.0 engine has plenty of power when you need it. The stock tires are good, but it feels much better with a bigger 15/16

  2. Howell Kuhn 2025-01-06

This van is one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. I drove it for 235000 kms on just one set of plugs, and it starts in temperatures ranging from +30 to -30 *c. I have even had 9 passengers, full camping equipment, and a 15-foot fiberglass boat and trailer on a 1000km round trip, and the van never missed a beat! The v6 Vulcan engine is incredible and I think it will outlast my next vehicle too (Ford Escape). On a highway run, it has achieved almost 40 kms/imperial gallon. If you take care of this van, it will take care of you. It's a smashing vehicle, and if I could get a new one, I would definitely buy one.

  3. Karson Bartell 2024-11-21

The only real problem I had was with burnt out sensors. However, everything else was basic maintenance. I used mine for work approximately 40k a year. It is fuel efficient and very dependable.

  4. Orval Ledner 2024-11-13

This van is truly impressive! It has exceeded all of our expectations and more. We've used it to transport everything from kids and dogs to home improvement supplies, groceries, and vacation gear, and it has never once complained or given us any trouble. Despite not being fancy, it is remarkably comfortable. If you keep up with regular maintenance, such as changing the oil every 3000 miles and replacing fluids and belts on schedule, the Aerostar will last forever. It has very few downsides and countless advantages that even vans costing thousands more can't match.
