1995 Ford Aerostar problems
The Ford Aerostar is a range of vans that was manufactured by Ford from the 1986 to the 1997 model years. The first minivan produced by Ford, the model line was marketed against the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari and the first two generations of the Chrysler minivans. Introduced shortly before the Ford Taurus, the Aerostar derived its name from its slope-nosed "one-box" exterior (although over six feet tall, the body of the Aerostar retained a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, besting the Lincoln Mark VII).
The first minivan powered exclusively by V6 engines, the Aerostar was also one of the first vehicles to introduce all-wheel drive to the segment in North America. The model line was sold in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo vans, along with an extended-length body. Sold primarily in the United States and Canada, a limited number of vehicles were exported outside of North America.
The Aerostar was replaced for the 1995 model year by the front-wheel drive Ford Windstar; Ford sold both model lines concurrently through the 1997 model year. The role of the Aerostar cargo van was left unfilled, with the Ford Transit Connect serving as the closest successor (in terms of size and capability).
For its entire production, the model line was assembled by the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. In total, 2,029,577 vehicles were produced across a single generation.

Common 1995 Ford Aerostar problems
The Ford Aerostar, produced between 1986 and 1997, is known for its reliability, but certain issues have been reported by owners over the years. This article will focus on the common problems found in the 1995 Ford Aerostar, based on complaints from owners.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems are the most common complaints among Ford Aerostar owners. These issues range from engine stalling to difficulty starting. For instance, some owners have reported that their Aerostar's engine stalls after running for a short period, while others have trouble starting the vehicle due to suspected fuel pump or coil pack problems.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is another issue that some Ford Aerostar owners have experienced. For example, the 1996 Aerostar has had reports of transmission failure, where the transmission won't engage, indicating a potential problem with the vehicle's transmission system.
- Transfer Case Sensors and Faulty Wiring: The Aerostar AWD system is an "On-Demand" system, and issues with transfer case sensors or faulty wiring are common problems. In some cases, the 4x4 light blinks twice consistently while the vehicle is in operation, indicating a potential problem with the AWD system. If the van is driven in conditions that utilize the front end more, like deep snow, the fuse may blow. The banging in reverse could be from a sloppy, worn drivetrain, broken engine or tranny mounts, a fast idle, or an AWD problem.
- Bracket Cracks: The bracket that's bolted to the side of the differential on the driver's side is known to crack all the time for some reason. This issue is common in AWD Aerostars, and if the bracket turns out to be cracked, it should be reinforced with some steel and welded to prevent further damage.
- Fuel System and Electrical Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the fuel system, including problems with the fuel pump and filter. Additionally, electrical problems, such as erratic readings from the AWD module due to dirty or oily wiring connectors, have also been reported.
In summary, the 1995 Ford Aerostar has several common problems, including engine issues, transmission failure, transfer case sensors and faulty wiring, bracket cracks, and fuel system and electrical problems. These issues can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and reliability, and it is essential for owners to address them promptly to ensure the safe and efficient operation of their Aerostar.

1995 Ford Aerostar recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 1995 Ford Aerostar.
- Manufacturer: BRAKE PARTS, INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: CERTAIN AFTERMARKET BRAKE HYDRAULIC MASTER CYLINDERS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT BRAKE CYLINDERS FOR CERTAIN FORD, DAIMLERCHRYSLER, AND JEEP PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE BRAKE CYLINDERS WERE SOLD UNDER THE BRAND NAMES OF NAPA, RAYBESTOS, AIMCO, AC DELCO, CARQUEST, BENDIX, AND WAGNER. ONLY PRODUCTS THAT WERE MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 27, 2005 THROUGH JANUARY 17, 2006 (DATE CODES 0529 THROUGH 0602) ARE SUBJECT TO THIS RECALL. WHEN SUBJECT TO VERY COLD TEMPERATURES, AN INTERNAL SEAL IN THE MASTER CYLINDER COULD LOSE FLEXIBILITY AND MAY CAUSE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK.
- Consequence: LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID CAN LEAD TO A DECREASE IN BRAKE LINE PRESSURE AND AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE, WHICH CAN RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: AFFINIA (BRAKE PARTS, INC.) WILL REPLACE THE SUBJECT BRAKE HYDRAULIC MASTER CYLINDERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 20, 2006. OWNERS CAN CONTACT AFFINA GROUP CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-323-0354.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH A HIGHER THAN SPECIFIED ELECTRICAL LOAD THROUGH THE ACCESSORY POWER FEED CIRCUIT. THE POTENTIAL FOR CONTACT BETWEEN THE B2 (BATTERY), A2 (ACCESSORY), AND P1 (PROOF) CIRCUITS CAN OCCUR, CREATING A SHORT CIRCUIT, ALLOWING CURRENT TO FLOW THROUGH THE GROUND WIRE.
- Consequence: THIS CAN CAUSE OVER HEATING AND THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A JUMPER HARNESS WITH A RELAY WHICH WILL RE-ROUTE AND ACTIVATE ALL A2 ACCESSORIES THROUGH THE RELAY.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. HEAT GENERATION IN THE WIRING HARNESS TO THE FUEL PUMP/SENDER ASSEMBLY CAN CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. THE VEHICLE COULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF POWER AND BECOME IMMOBILIZED AND THE FUEL GAUGE MAY BE ERRATIC.
- Consequence: HEAT DAMAGE, INCLUDING MELTING OR CHARRING OF THE FUEL PUMP AND SENDER ASSEMBLY WIRE HARNESS AND ASSOCIATED WIRING HARNESSES CAN ALSO RESULT. THE SHORT CIRCUIT COULD ALSO HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED JUMPER HARNESS IN THE FUEL PUMP GROUND CIRCUIT THAT WILL BE INSTALLED AT THE FUEL PUMP INERTIA SHUT-OFF SWITCH.
- Manufacturer: AIMCO PRODUCTS INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DISC:ROTOR
- Summary: EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: AFTERMARKET BRAKE ROTORS FOR USE ON CERTAIN FORD AND MAZDA TRUCKS. CRACKED CASTINGS CAUSED CRACKS TO APPEAR ON THE OUTER DIAMETER OF THE ROTOR HAT OR AROUND THE STUD HOLE.
- Consequence: LOSS OF BRAKING CAN RESULT.
- Remedy: AIMCO WILL REIMBURSE CONSUMERS/INSTALLERS FOR THE COST OF REPLACEMENT ROTORS AND INSTALLATION. CONSUMERS ARE REQUESTED TO RETURN TO THE LOCATION WHERE THE ROTORS WERE ORIGINALLY PURCHASED/INSTALLED FOR REPLACEMENT.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: ALL WHEEL DRIVE PASSENGER MINIVANS. THESE VEHICLES CAN DEVELOP POWERTRAIN BENDING RESONANCE OR TRANSFER CASE OUTPUT SHAFT BUSHING DISPLACEMENT. THE POWERTRAIN BENDING RESONANCE OR THE OUTPUT SHAFT BUSHING DISPLACEMENT CAN RESULT IN STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION AND/OR TRANSFER CASE. FLUID EXPLUSION, DRIVESHAFT SEPARATION OR LOSS OF VEHICLE DRIVE CAN RESULT.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, AND, IF THE EXPELLED FLUID CONTACTS THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, A VEHICLE FIRE COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW TRANSFER CASE REAR OUTPUT SHAFT BUSHING AND AN ALUMINUM DRIVESHAFT WILL BE INSTALLED.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: THE CERTIFICATION LABEL ON THESE VEHICLES HAVE INCORRECT REAR TIRE SIZES LISTED. P215/70R14SL SHOULD BE P215/75R14SL. THIS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH FMVSS NO. 120, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS."
- Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: THE INCORRECTLY SIZED REAR TIRE WOULD NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT LOAD CAPACITY FOR THE VEHICLE'S SPECIFIED GROSS AXLE WEIGHT RATING, INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR PREMATURE TIRE FAILURE.
- Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE MAILED A SUPPLEMENTARY LABEL CONTAINING THE CORRECT REAR TIRE INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING THE LABEL ON THEIR VEHICLES. IF OWNERS PREFER, THEIR DEALER CAN INSTALL THE LABEL FOR THEM.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: EQUIPMENT:MECHANICAL:CARRIER/RACK
- Summary: THE SPARE TIRE SUPPLIED WITH THE VEHICLE CAN CONTACT THE BRAKE LINES ON THE REAR AXLE IF IT IS MOUNTED IN THE UNDERBODY SPARE TIRE CARRIER. SUCH CONTACT COULD RESULT IN FRACTURE OF A REAR BRAKE LINE.
- Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN REDUCED VEHICLE BRAKE CAPABILITY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A LOWER PROFILE MINI-SPARE TIRE ON THE EXISTING MINI-SPARE WHEEL. THE NEW TIRE WILL ALLOW THE MINI-SPARE TO BE INSTALLED WITH APPROPRIATE CLEARANCES IN THE UNDERBODY SPARE TIRE CARRIER.

I purchased a used 1996 Aerostar in 1998 with 66,000 miles on it. I drove it for many years and retired it with 225,000 miles on it when it started losing compression in two cylinders. In 2002, I bought a 1995 with 99,000 miles on it. It has been a reliable vehicle and has clocked 261,500 miles so far. However, living in an area with heavy snowfall, I found that the two-wheel drive was not sufficient to climb hills in the snow, especially if someone was driving less than 30 miles per hour in front of me. This morning, I drove to Show Low AZ and purchased a 1995 AWD extended van with 116,400 miles on it. I am thrilled with my purchase as it has been well-maintained, has no rust, and only two minor door dings.

Hi there! I'm happy to share that we purchased this van with 75000 miles and it now has 161000 miles on it. I'm really pleased with how it's held up over time. I've had to replace the cv joints on both axles, brakes, and tires, but the motor still runs great and uses no oil. This is actually my second Aerostar - unfortunately, the first one was totaled about a month after we bought it. We were hit broadside at 50 mph and the van was pushed three lanes across the road, but amazingly we walked away without a scratch!

Your minivan sounds like a great vehicle! It was very reliable and could start up anywhere, even in parking lots. You mentioned that it had a few issues when you needed to sell it, but overall it ran like a top. It's impressive that your whole family and even some friends could ride in it comfortably without any issues. It's clear that you really enjoyed owning this minivan and it was your favorite vehicle. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!

Hi there! I can totally understand how hard it must be to part with your van. It has been such a reliable workhorse, taking your family and all their stuff to so many places. From college trips to Wisconsin, North Carolina and Pottsdam in upstate NY, to countless trips to Indiana loaded to the top with product for your husband's business, and even to Minnesota to visit your first grandchild! It's amazing how it has held up so well, starting every morning without fail despite being outside all year in western NY. And the best part is, it's comfortable for everyone in your family, including your 6'7

We purchased this van 1 1/2 years ago and have unfortunately experienced multiple issues with it. Despite the various repairs we have had to make, including replacing the engine, cam shaft, both heads, radiator, water pump, rack and pinion, and other components, we remain confident in our decision to purchase this vehicle. We are taking steps to address the issues and ensure that it runs smoothly in the future. Thank you for your understanding.

I have to admit that after going through one transmission, 3 starters, one water pump, one air conditioner, and two side door latches, it has come time for me to part with the Aerostar. Since they don't make it anymore and I can't find another (I would buy one if it was a '97), I am going to switch to a Chevy Astro or GMC Safari. It's too bad they stopped making it and went to the Windstar. The Safari/Astro would have been good competition.

This vehicle has consistently cost me over $1k every year in repairs since I purchased it. Despite sinking another $980.00 into it less than a week before driving it from WA to CA, we returned from our trip last Sunday with a burned out transmission. It is clear that this car is a complete lemon, as I have experienced numerous engine issues and even had a hydraulic arm on the hatch spontaneously break and fly through the van, posing a serious danger. It is well-known that this car model has a reputation for being either an excellent vehicle or a complete lemon, and unfortunately, I ended up with the latter.

What a shame that happened! I had a van with 145,000 miles that was still running strong, but I wanted something newer and bigger. So we bought a suburban, but unfortunately it broke down after only one month. Looking back, I should have kept the aerostar. I bought it with 105,000 miles and only had to change the belts and a starter motor. I never even got an oil change!
