I APPLIED MY BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THE HIGHLANDER THIS HAD NO EFFECT ON SLOWING DOWN THE HIGHLANDER. THE BRAKES WENT INTO ANTI LOCKING MODE THE WHEELS STARTED TO PULSATE. WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR , BUT ON THE BRAKES. THE HIGHLANDER WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN BUT INCREASING SPEED. I DOWN SHIFTED INTO A LOWER GEAR, THE ENGINE RACED AT A HIGH RPMS. I THEN PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL THE RPMS STILL RACING AT A HIGH RATE. I THEN APPLIED THE BRAKES AGAIN TO SLOW DOWN. THE HIGHLANDER STARTED TO SLOW DOWN I THEN TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND THEN CAME TO A STOP. I WAITED FOR A MINUTE AND STARTED THE CAR THE ENGINE RACED AT A HIGH RPMS AS IF MY FOOT WAS PUSHED ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR, BUT MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. I WAITED AGAIN A FEW MINUTES TO START THE HIGHLANDER , THE SAME HIGH RPMS HAPPENING AGAIN. A FEW MINUTES LATER I TRIED AGAIN TO START THE HIGHLANDER AND THIS TIME THE HIGHLANDER IDLED NORMAL. I TURNED THE HIGHLANDER AROUND AND WENT HOME WHICH WAS HALF A MILE AWAY. THE TOTAL DISTANCE OF UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION WAS IN MY ESTIMATION OVER 1,000 YARDS. I HAD TO HIGHLANDER TOWED TO STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA WHERE IT REMAINS NOW JUNE 27 2016.

I ALSO MADE SURE TO DO THE REPAIRS THEY SUGGESTED. SOMETIMES HOWEVER THEY SAID IT WAS FINE, BUT WOULD COME TO FIND OUT, I DID HAVE ISSUES. HOWEVER SINCE 2015 I HAVE DEALT, WITH ONE THING AFTER THE NEXT WITH THE CAR. MOST RECENTLY THIS PAST WEEKEND WHERE MY ENGINE COMPLETELY BLEW. HOW COULD A ENGINE BLOW OUT ON SUCH A WELL MAINTAINED CAR? WELL AFTER REVIEWING OTHER COMPLAINTS ONLINE, IT SEEMS THIS YEAR AND MODEL HAS THIS PROBLEM OFTEN, ONCE THEY REACH AROUND 110,000 MARK OR SO. WHY? IT SEEMS TO BE A FAULTY ENGINE /SOMETHING THAT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE RECALLED. WE AS CONSUMERS SHOULDN'T HAVE TO SPEND THOUSANDS ON A CAR, THOUSANDS TO KEEP IT IN GREAT CONDITION AND THEN THOUSANDS WHEN ARE ENGINES FAIL AND THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED. - Summary: PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT KAISER HOSPITAL AS I HIT THE BRAKE THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED. THE CAR SPED FORWARD WHILE MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE. I HIT A TREE CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE LEFT FRONT AREA OF THE CAR (LIGHTS, FENDER, BUMPER) HAD CAR REPAIRED. AT THE TIME I THOUGHT THAT I HAD ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE GAS PEDAL;HOWEVER, ONE MONTH LATER WHILE APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION, AS I STOPPED, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. LUCKILY NO CAR OR PEDESTRIAN WAS IN THE INTERSECTION. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BY SHIFTING INTO PARK. TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC. HE WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. SINCE THIS UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION OCCURRED IN THE SAME WAY (COMING TO A STOP WITH FOOT ON BRAKE AND GEAR-SHIFT IN DRIVE) , IN A FIVE WEEK PERIOD, IT COULD BE A TRANSMISSION OR ACCELERATER PROBLEM. I NO LONGER FEEL CONFIDENT DRIVING THE CAR AND CONSIDER IT UNSAFE.

- Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE A CHILD PROTECTION LOCK (CPL) SYSTEM ON BOTH OF THE REAR SIDE DOORS. WHEN AN OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE CLOSES THE DOOR VERY HARD WITH THE CPL LEVER SET TO THE LOCK POSITION, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE LEVER MAY CONTACT THE BODY PANEL, CAUSING THE CPL LEVER TO MOVE INTO THE UNLOCK POSITION.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD ALLOW THE DOOR TO BE OPENED WITH THE INSIDE WHILE THE OPERATOR BELIEVES THAT THE CPL WAS ACTIVATED. IF THE DOOR WERE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, AN OCCUPANT COULD FALL OUT AND BE INJURED.

- Consequence: IF THE SPARE TIRE/WHEEL IS INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE USING THE WHEEL NUTS PROVIDED FOR THE UPGRADE ALLOY WHEEL, DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL COULD RESULT AND COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A LOOSE WHEEL.
- Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH DIFFERENT STYLE LUG NUTS, A WARNING LABEL FOR THE SPARE RE/ALLOY WHEEL, AND AN OWNER'S MANUAL ADDENDUM.

I'm a long time Toyota driver. I traded in a 2001 Avalon and didn't want to give up a comfortable ride. I'm happy to say that my Highlander not only provides a comfortable ride, but it also looks great with its stunning 'Candy Apple Red' color. It's a great feeling to drive a car that looks good, feels good, and is good.

This SUV is excellent! It achieves an impressive 24-26 mpg with a 70/30 hwy/city split. Although I experienced the P0420/P0430 check engine light, I resolved the issue by running several tanks of high-quality gas with fuel system cleaner. After clearing the codes, the vehicle runs even better than before. I appreciate the spaciousness and fuel efficiency of this 4-cylinder SUV, which provides ample power for my needs. Overall, I am thrilled with this SUV's performance, economy, and driving experience.

This has been a fantastic car. It hasn't needed any repairs since I got it. It's incredibly comfortable and the back seat area is very roomy. It drives like a dream and gets great gas mileage for an SUV.

I was quoted a cost of $6,400 - $8,500 for a rebuilt engine, depending on the vendor. As a loyal customer, I was disappointed with the performance of the company I trusted.

On Jan 25 2011, while driving across town, my vehicle suddenly came to a stop due to a coolant leak. Upon investigation, I discovered that the engine (2.4L 4cyl) had a common issue with stripped head-bolts, which is a known problem that can be found by searching for 'Highlander stripped head-bolts' on Google. Unfortunately, the repair costs for this issue can be quite expensive. Despite being the original owner of the vehicle and this being a manufacturing or design issue, the dealer has refused to assist with the repair costs. However, I am confident in my knowledge of this issue and will continue to seek a resolution.

I bought the 4 cylinder for my wife, and while she is okay with it, I personally find it difficult to drive. We were hoping for better gas mileage with the 4 cylinder, but unfortunately, we only get around 19 mpg, sometimes even less. On a recent trip, we managed to get 22 mpg, which is still far from the advertised 22-27 mpg. Interestingly, I have spoken to some people who own the 6 cylinder and they seem to be getting the same or even better gas mileage. Therefore, it might be worth considering the V6 option, which offers 80-90 more horsepower while still achieving similar gas mileage.

I've owned the Highlander for five years now and while the exterior styling may not be my personal preference, the interior is well done and provides a very comfortable ride. It's important to note that the Highlander is not designed for those seeking a powerful, fun car to drive or for those in need of towing capacity. Additionally, the rear interior space is limited and can only comfortably accommodate four to five adults, with the optional rear seat being suitable for small children. Overall, the Highlander is a reliable and comfortable car that may not be the most stylish or powerful, but is a great option for those prioritizing comfort and dependability.
