Background
The Nitro debuted in February 2005 at the Chicago Auto Show as a concept with aluminum-trimmed vents door handles and rear hatch, as well as an interior with a center stack and shifter in satin silver.
The Nitro became Dodge's first compact SUV model since the Raider was discontinued in 1990. It also became the first modern Dodge marketed in Europe, where the Nitro was Dodge's only SUV until the 2009 model year when the larger, car-based, lower-priced Dodge Journey crossover SUV arrived.
The Nitro shares mechanicals and much bodywork with its platform-mate, the Jeep Liberty, while using a slightly extended wheelbase, the extra length split between the rear seat and cargo areas.
The Nitro debuted with an SUV class-leading 5,000-pound (2,300 kg) towing capacity. Safety features such as electronic roll mitigation, traction control, and side curtain airbags, as well as a functional sliding cargo floor marketed as Load 'N Go were offered as standard equipment. The system allows a moveable floor panel to slide out from the cargo area by 18 in (457 mm) to ease loading.

- Summary: WHILE USING THE REMOTE KEY TO LOCK/UNLOCK THE CARE, THE HORN STARTS BLARING, THE WIPERS (FRONT AND REAR) START GOING, WASHER FLUID SHOOTS OUT, DOORS LOCK AND UNLOCK INDEPENDENTLY. DOORS WILL NOT UNLOCK/LOCK WITH REMOTE. THE LIGHTS START BLINKING. I HAVE TO PHYSICALLY UNLOCK THE CAR AND QUICKLY OPEN BEFORE IT LOCKS AGAIN. THE SECOND TIME MY SON WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND THIS ALL OCCURRED WHILE HE WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT. HE WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER BUT WAS CLEARLY SHOOK UP. WHEN TURNING ON THE ENGINE THE HORN STARTS BLARING AGAIN, WITH LIGHTS BLINKING. IF HE TUNED ON/OFF THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS THE HORN STARTS BLARING AND THE LIGHTS START FLASHING. WHEN PRESSING THE ACTUAL DOOR LOCK THE HORN STARTS BLARING. IT TOOK 3 RESTARTS TO TRY TO CONTINUE THE DRIVE. IT IS CLEARLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AND IS NEGLIGENT ON OUR PART TO TRY TO DO SO. THIS IS ARE MAIN SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION. I AM REALLY SCARED OF WHAT COULD HAPPEN SHOULD THE ENTIRE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY. WHAT IF THE STEERING GOES OUT AGAIN AND SOMEONE IS KILLED? I LOOKED UP SIMILAR ISSUES AND FOUND THAT THERE WERE NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING 2008 AND 2009 DODGE NITROS. THE DIAGNOSIS IS APPARENTLY A FAULTY TIPM. THERE APPEARS TO BE A NATIONAL BACKORDER ON THIS PART AND DESPITE THIS, STILL NO RECALL FOR THE 2008-2009 MODELS ONLY THE 2010-2012 HAVE BEEN ISSUED. I PURCHASED A DODGE BECAUSE I TRULY FELT THAT IT WAS A GREAT VEHICLE AND I AM WORRIED AND DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY ARE NOT STANDING BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. WHAT WILL IT TAKE? HOW MANY DEATHS OR NEAR FREAK ACCIDENTS BEFORE THEY ACTUALLY MAKE THIS RIGHT?

- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2008-2010 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan and 2007-2011 Dodge Nitro vehicles. These vehicles may have a loose or missing brand emblem in the center of the steering wheel. The loose emblem or the securing nuts for the emblem within the driver air bag module may become projectiles in the event of a driver air bag deployment.
- Consequence: Projectiles as a result of driver air bag deployment in the event of a crash can increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag cover with a redesigned cover, free of charge. The recall began February 11, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W09.

Nice truck! It's so much fun to drive and the price is great. I absolutely love the look! While it may lack a bit of power, it still drives really nicely. I've driven a 2009 Equinox before and it's just not as nice as my Nitro. Overall, I give it two thumbs up!

I've owned my 2008 Dodge Nitro for almost 2 years now and I must say it's one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. I opted for the 4x4 and living in upstate NY where we get a few feet of snow every snowfall, the Nitro handles great in the snow and can really bite into the deep stuff with no issues. I get a lot of compliments on my Nitro, from the color to the design, with people saying it looks tough. I feel extremely safe every time I drive it in bad weather. I can definitely see myself buying the same vehicle in the future as long as they continue keeping the Nitro rugged and aggressive. This vehicle is an SUV and it rides and handles like one. I absolutely love it!

I received this vehicle as a Christmas gift in 2007 and I am grateful to have an honest and loyal car dealer. Unfortunately, the vehicle has a leak in the roof that becomes apparent during heavy rain. I have had to visit my dealer multiple times to address this issue. While this is a disappointing manufacturer's flaw, I appreciate the efforts of my dealer to help me resolve the issue. Based on my experience, I will not be purchasing another Dodge Nitro in the future.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my '08 Nitro. When I was looking for a new car, I was drawn to the Nitro because it had many of the features that my previous car had as standard. Unfortunately, my previous car was hit in the rear at 55mph and the damage was too great to repair. When I purchased my Nitro from the dealer, it already had 52 miles on it and was considered used. While I have had some issues with the tire sensor going off frequently, indicating that the tires are not equal pressure (I think it might be defective), I have found that the handling took a while to get used to, especially since my Mazda SUV had far superior handling, braking, and turning. Overall, I think the Nitro is a decent vehicle, but it might be better suited for Jeep or Dodge enthusiasts. Thank you for listening to my experience!

I would suggest considering other options before purchasing a used Dodge Nitro. In my personal experience, I have had to spend a lot of money on repairs and maintenance. Therefore, I cannot recommend a Dodge Nitro to anyone. Thank you for considering my advice.

The misfiring problem is a well-known issue with Dodge, but I have not been able to find any helpful threads or fixes. Despite changing the coil packs and spark plugs, the engine vibration has become almost unbearable, with cylinder 1 and 4 misfiring and the P303 code appearing. However, I am confident that with the right solution, this issue can be resolved. I urge Dodge to take responsibility for their faulty products and provide a fix for their customers. I look forward to hearing from them soon.
